I'm deciding if I should make the trade. The main reason is the battery. I found the S6 Edge battery is not enough for me (getting 3 SOT max and it does not last more than 10 hours). So I want to install a Stock ROM on it (is it possible?) and have "infinite" battery life with a good phone.
Any feedbacks on this decision?
Go for P8 Max. It also has 6inch screen, 4000mAh and 16mp camera. The specs are better than Mate 7.
I admit Mate 7 is a good phone but why settle for an old model when there is a new one. Plus, P8 Max has a more updated software, and can be upgraded to Marshmallow in the future.

The only advice I can think of is that if you like custom roms and rooting then you can't go wrong with samsung phones, i had a note 2 for 3 yrs and then got a mate 7 and i am a bit sorry as trying to root the phone has been a nightmare and i am VERY worried about bricking this phone..
the note 2 is ALMOST impossible to brick and the support for samsung is brilliant on this forum where as the mate even after one year is still iffy.
please don't get me wrong the Mate 7 is a fantastic phone but i am still very uncomfortable to root it as there are SO may opinions and different ways ... (
Mine runs rock solid rooted, still on kitkat.
Rooting is the best for it as you can strip out the google bloat from /system/app.
I've kept most of the Huawei extras but the launcher is rubbish and I installed Smart Launcher Pro. I also installed Viper4Android for awesome sound, poweramp for quality music playback UE. For convenience of screen use, kinscreen, and to help the battery and keep data use under control, leandroid. I also flashed in the Xperia kitkat keyboard through CWM and removed google keyboard.
An older version of xposed is installed with some modules.
All up, it runs well, battery lasts well and it's set up to suit me better. The hardware is good for the price. Connectivity is great.
Apart from the poor Huawei launcher, the Huawei software is actually quite good and even has built in tools to manage permission and memory residence.
The launcher is no big deal when you can just install another and set it as default even if not rooted.
Happy I got mine.
Not for the Mate 7. I have had nothing with issues with the screen on mine. Replaced 2 times by service center. There were lines across the screen that were brighter than the rest of the screen. Got the S6 a week ago.

i agree, while i love the build quality of the mate 7 i cant stand the software. i "upgraded" from a nexus 5 and it just isnt the same. if the mate 7 came with a snapdragon soc rather than the huaweis proprietary soc it would truly be the best phone around. i suggest you wait, zte and other Chinese manufactures will be coming out with snapdragon 820 phablets this year.

What do you find so annoying about the software? I quite like the look and feel, very very stable and in my case it has even made up for the urge I normally have to flash roms, simply because there is no need. I appreciate that some may have had issues with the device but I guess you'll find that with every other device on the market.
I've had samsungs for quite a while before switching to the mate 7 and to be honest after so many years I got tired of Touchwiz with degrading performance or a CM alternative with poorer camera quality.
Instead of flashing one ROM after the other I find myself spending more time using the device enjoying its massive 6" screen [emoji1]

i find it annoying that i cant fully control what i do with my phone. on my nexus 5 i was able to do many things that i now see is not possible with my mate7. yes, i as well love the massive screen but after playing with a few nexus 6p's i have become very jealous. this is how the mate 7 should be. all custom ui stuff should be an optional addon "feature". what makes things worse is that companies spend alot of time building this stuff which many often end up not liking.
look at motorola and sony. they have converted to damn near stock android. whatever customization is present fits nicely into aosp android. last night i installed the stock firmware for my mate 7 (B328) and its honestly..... meh! huawei really bastardized what is the best visual android update. they even managed to completely screw up the recent apps view. huawei should really consider this.
for now im just going to get over it and keep using my mate 7 as is. not fully happy but whatever. thankfully there will be a few full metal phablets with snapdragon 820 chips being released this year. i cant wait!

True, the Nexus 6p is very nice with an even better screen, although tiny smaller.

Just switched my mate 7 out for a Nexus 6p - like many people on this thread while I thought the hardware was great (especially the battery life!), the iffy software and half assed updates got to me in the end (I came to the mate from a Nexus 5).
The 6p is spot on - shows what huawei can do when running Android as its meant to be. Battery life not so good as the mate 7, but plenty good enough. If you are coming from a high end phone like an s6 edge I'd say the 6p would be a better bet. As regards screen size... I'm not really noticing any reduction in what I can see on the 6p, but going down to 5.7 with a slim width does really help with holding the phone one handed.
I sold my note 5 and for the huawei mate 7, it hasn't arrived yet...I paid 250 for it, however I'm a tad concerned now , have I made a unwise decision .I did it so I could give huawei a chance and I'm seeing and hearing negatives.

Well, all phones have their negative sides. I love this phone because of the big screen and long battery life. It has a decent camera. It doesnt lag when playing games.
Give it a chance and I hope you will love this phone too. If ever your Mate 7 still runs on KK just leave it be. Lots of bugs in LP.

I'm confused ...is the stock lollipop rom buggy ...how can that be lol? Did I jump the gun a bit selling the note 5? Are they're any stable cutom roms you could recommend. To each his own I guess, but Lollipop is running super stable on my Mate 7.
Custom ROMS are not really an option on this device, there's pretty much no development going on, just have a quick look at the development sub forum and you can easily tell there's not so much going on there.
Make sure that if yo need to upgrade your device try following the official path first, allowing the phone to update itself to LP 5.1.1. If for some reason you don't get the updates just make sure you follow the instructions properly to update with an official ROM from Huawei's website and you should be just fine [emoji6]

I did have lollipop running on mine for a while, and to be fair it was OK. However, it did seem to be missing some things that were included in KK - the carrier aggregation toggle, and after a hard reset it lost the motion control gesture settings etc.
Hence my point about it being glitchy. The other things that I found annoying is the EMUI customization made it difficult to access some of the underlying android screens (such as data usage etc). Also, I found that Google Voice when used in the USA would not dial out with the correct caller ID and number due to Huawei dialer I couldn't change. The other thing is that it is a bit laborious to change ROMs - you've got to download this, incremental update that, flash this to go back to the start etc.....a bit of pain really and one I couldn't really work out why it was necessary - again points to Huawei releasing all sorts of different confusing updates worldwide some of which were not complete.
Don't get me wrong, fundamentally there's nothing wrong with the phone - its just not a good tinkerers phone, nor is is well supported - none of the ported over more 'pure android' roms have yet been able to make the fingerprint sensor operate and can have iffy result with bluetooth etc.

Hi All.
I went from Mate 7 to P8max and can't really notice any difference in the roms and I was upset that Mate 7 never got an update to 5.11. Very excited to get p8max to find there is no real difference. I have watched a few videos of the differences up to 5.11 and it is quite a lot like better dual sim handling, seems to gone on the p8max. It's like Huawei wiped all the good stuff and skinned the whole phone with there own crap.
What are other peoples thoughts, is there a way to remove the Huawei skinning?

I guess we are going to have to wait for some developers to jump on board, I would love this phone In a nice clean AOSP rom but I dont think that ever going to happen.
I have for the most part installed all my normal google apps and launcher to at least get it to somewhere normal for my taste (coming from nexus 6)

You should have some patience.
CyanogenMod team provided device specs for the mate 2 & the Nexus 6P will be built by Huawei, so the source code will definitely have something in common with the p8.
It should be available next week once the Nexus announcement is made.

The Nexus 6P is running snapdragon so that's not usable for us. We need at least source code from one device that's running the same cpu and similar spec in order to even start to build the device tree.

Hey Guys,
I bought the Honor 8 and I´m super happy with it.
BUT
Why is there almost no custom rom support?
Is Honor holding back on the kernel source?
I´m a little bit worried that (like on my last phone redmi note 2) there will be no good custom roms
and in the end I´m stuck with a phone that will no longer be updated ....
Don´t get me wrong, I dont want to complain, I`m just worried because 350$ is a lot of money for me and I´m looking for a phone that will be (software wise) up to date for at least 3 years. (with custom roms, like CM14 etc)
So, should I return it or should I keep it?
Thanks in advance!
Gecko
there will be rom development but it will be slow as there are no sources to fix bugs or get things working properly
if you really wanted custom roms, you shoulve picked a snapdragon device,
i cant say its not gonna have a good custom rom support, but all i can say is huaweis kirin is not completely open sourced, and even if it will be opened, it is not as flexible as snapdragon..
for a better clearification, go on and have a look at honor 7 or 6 forums,,
I bought this phone about 3 weeks ago. At first I was excited at how beautiful it was, hardware-wise, and simply told myself I'd get used to the software. Fast forward to now and I wish I would have went with a Pixel or even Sony device.
Even on the stock ROM certain things don't work, such as Accessibility Settings for LastPass password App Fill, adding VCard info to your contacts list won't work/sync to the cloud, and the stock Huawei apps that you can't uninstall annoyingly keep asking for permissions. There are more that I forgot to mention but I miss having everything just work in vanilla Android. Sadly, custom ROM support is buggy and is stuck at Marshmallow.
That said, here's what I like:
- PRICE. Can be found for just under $300 now
- much faster than my Nexus 5X
- swipe left/right on the home button shrinks the screen to give easy thumb access to the top of your app (similar to what iOS does)
- there's a Power Hungry app notification which let's you easily close battery draining apps
- fast fingerprint unlock, and you can use the sensor as a button
- though EMUI generally lags behind AOSP, Huawei did a great job making it look sleek even though they borrowed a ton from iOS
I'm going to look into returning it at Best Buy. Once you go stock Android it's hard to get used to anything else (aside from Sony's light touches), and I don't think I can live with this device until next November.
Thank you for all your answers.
I think I´m gonna go with redmi note 3 pro international version

Good choice better rom support
I love my Nexus 6 but I am having some battery issues, I have always wanted a better camera and I need more storage than the 32gb I currently have.
I have been looking at the Mate 9 since early fall and then somewhat spur of the moment ordered one from Amazon (I get a year to pay for it) yesterday. It should arrive tomorrow. Unfortunately, as I have poured through the Mate 9 forums for the last 24 hrs I have found not much development as I hoped for.
I then looked at the comparable new phone forums like the OnePlus3T and saw a crap load of development.
Input would be greatly appreciated!
What is the likelihood of development being stepped up for the Mate 9 in the coming weeks / months?
Any thoughts from the perspective of buying a OnPlus3T 64gb (twice my current memory) vs staying with the Mate9 (and having almost 200gb right off the bat -- 64gb plus my 128 sd card)?
I guess if the thought is that there is little chance of significantly further development for the Mate 9 I might rather try the alternative.
Thanks!!!!
It's never going to be comparable to the OnePlus, for a start because it's powered by a Kirin SoC which is a brilliant chip in itself but not widely documented.
Doesn't bother me one bit though, the device runs smooth as butter and I stopped tinkering years ago, jailbreaking, rooting, the lot. I'm happy with it as is.

Exactly as I feel. If you want to have fun modifying your phone, go for the OnePlus, or a Samsung.
If you just want a great phone to use, stick with the Mate 9. You can't do better - at least until this year's new phones come out. And they will have to be brilliant to beat the Mate 9.
Ever since getting the honor note 8. I've been nothing but Huawei/Honor and nothing else. And haven't felt the need to root them.
Honor note 8
Honor 8
Huawei mate 9
Sure there a few quirks. But def a fresh of new air after living with Samsung and LG and everything else under the sun. Since androids inception. Gone through countless devices since the HTC hero and rooted every single one. Now don't even care anymore cause the crap just works now. Lol.
The mate 9 is a fantastic device that nobody will buy. ( Ie normal people )
What do u need root for. ?

I guess not so much just needing root ( for things like Titanium Backup [wouldn't even need that if there isn't any ROMs being developed], some Tasker functions, kernel tweaking , to name a few)
Granted I could do without most
BUT ... there are some little things that are made nice with Custom ROMs (esp just a plain ole AOSP ROM or maybe some Lineage based ROMs like Res Remix)
Ultimately though the Mate 9 is really nice ...... now I think I gotta decide whether I wanna keep the Mate 9 with 4gb ROM / 64 gb (and my 128 gb microSD card) ...... OR ........ the Mate 9 Pro with 6gb ROM / 128gb internal (and not use my microSD)
Any thoughts? I've had the Mate 9 for about 36 hrs ,,, get the Pro to try Wed
I'm guessing performance wise the 9 and pro are nearly identical except for the ram difference so I guess it all comes down to screen size. I'm more a the bigger the better kind of guy so I went with the normal mate 9. But since you can get your hands on both, see which size is more fit for you.
Yep, screen size wins it for me. But hey whatever floats your boat.

Hello.
I'm looking for a new phone, my budget is around 340 USD and therefore Honor 8 has really caught my eye. I'd like to ask a couple questions.
1. Is the bootloader unlock process problematic? Have you faced any issues with it or is it hassle-free? Coming from an LG device, I want to be extra careful with this.
2. I plan to have this device for a longer period of time, around 3-4 years. Is Honor 8 a viable choice, despite the fact that it will soon be a year from the release? Will it be able to hold off for that long, in terms of ROM support and general performance/usage?
3. How do custom ROM development prospects look right now for the device? From what I've seen, Huawei still hasn't released sources for Nougat. Can I expect good custom ROM support from this device?
4. How satisfied are you with your phone? Would you recommend it to me? Are there anything you don't like about the phone?
Thanks in advance.
Hi , i will just speak about question 4 ....
I had iphone7 , Huawei P9, Galaxy s7 and since 2 month : Honor 8
Yes for me you can buy this phone in 2017
It's a very good phone , very fluid, no lags, the phone is not too big , not to small, you can use with one hand . Screen is good , photo too but not like Iphone7 or Galaxy S7 . I am very happy with quick charge . For me the phone is more faster than an Iphone7, or Galaxy S7 . You can personalize like you want , You have a lot of nice themes on XDA or Google+ Emui Community . Sound is good, with headset is not like an Iphone or Galaxy s7 but to listen music is suffisant for me . Voilà, my advice is very good phone, just photo and music with headset can be better but stay ok for daily use .
The device is solid. Runs fast, pretty good specs, and looks nice.
Expect zero updates. Zero custom ROM support, and even rooting is a pain in the butt.
If you're into it for the dev scene, move on. If you want a half decent device for daily use, not bad at all.
Personally I regret buying it because Huawei is terrible at updates and keeping promises.
But as a daily driver device, it's fine.
Don't buy it's an alright phone but no custom ROM support is like a death sentence for a phone. This phone has been out for like 9 months and doesn't have a fully working custom ROM, that right there tells you that this phone has no future. Also who keeps wants to keep a low to mid range phone for 3-4 years? Must be in a 3rd world country!
I am happy with the phone but I'm disappointed with Huawei/Honor when it comes to updates and I am not going to buy more phones from them.
I would get something else right now, it was a good choice when it was released
Next time I will just pay 200 extra euro and get a real phone
Yeah it is a good phone but i am disappointed i expected few roms by now...i wish i could turn time back and go for xiaomi rednote 3 pro

I'm pretty satisfied. I enjoy it's dimensions, design, performance and battery life. Games aside, it's faster than any SD820 phone and most SD821 phones (take a look at performance comparison videos on youtube), so it's definitely going to be quick enough for 3-4 years.
If no custom ROM support, lower than SD820 GPU performance and only 2 years of official updates are OK for you (as it is for me) - I definitely recommend it.

You can easily get a code from Huawei to unlock the bootloader, but there's not much point to rooting the phone with development on it pretty nonexistent.
The hardware is really nice. The phone's a great size, the CPU is a beast, the GPU kind of sucks (but that doesn't matter if you're not playing new/demanding games on it like me), but the security updates are TERRIBLE. The most recent software update for the US version of the phone came out in the beginning of January. So we're almost four months into the year and the December 1st security patch is the most recent one available.
If you'd be happy with Nougat 7.0/EMUI 5.0 in a year from now and don't do anything that having security up to date matters it's fine, but otherwise I'd look elsewhere.
I currently have a Google/Motorola Nexus 6, running 7.1.1... But the very difficult to find and replace battery is finally on its way out... I tend to look into rooting and running custom firmwares, and am interested in what would be my first Huawei device because of this...
Just wondering what people's experience has been with the Mate 9 Pro (not interested much in the Mate 9) when compared to Nexus devices?
How hard is it to flash back to factory stock? My old LG phone had KDZ files for it to go back to fully stock without too much difficulty... What issues are cropping up for people who root beyond the normal things like Android Pay and such? The other phone that has the hardware I am interested in is the AT&T version of the LG V20, but it appears AT&T won't let them put out the KDZ files for it to go back to stock... And that is a deal breaker for me...
What is your open software experience with the Huawei Mate 9 Pro?
Or should I just wait till we know more about the OnePlus 5?

Well for both the mate 9 and 9 pro there isn't any development happening outside of a few stock roms now for the regular mate 9 and I believe nothing at all for the pro. Coming a nexus we are barely getting magisk going and I'm not sure if it 100% yet. Rooting is a different ballgame as well, I came from a nexus 6p and it is night and day. It is a nice phone and I am rooted stock with only viper installed. There are rumors for development of lineage for the mate 9 that I do ha e now but that is to be seen. If you're looking for a phone that is easily rootable and lots of development you may want to wait for the new OP5. You should look through the threads so you can get an ideal of what you'd be getting into with the phone.

Ive been using Huawei phones since mate 7.
Do not buy Huawei products for modding/custom roms. If you are a flashaholic, stick with nexus, pixel, oneplus etc.
Since moving to huawei, I havent had the itch to flash custom roms either though. Every phone has its issues, but in my opinion, mate series does everything above average if not great.

I made the move from Nexus 6 to Mate 9. My nexus 6 screen had broken, so seemed best to just upgrade.
I'm generally happy with my move. The phone is physically more manageable than the Nexus 6 and feels sturdier on the whole.
I'm not getting security updates very often though and I expect Huawei aren't going to give me the next version of Android either.
The settings and general Huawei skin does get a bit annoying at times when you're used to pure Android, as on the whole, it's inevitably inferior to stock Android.
My main reason for going to the Mate 9 was for the six inch screen and strong hardware.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback, and I appreciate the responses :good:
It's looking like I should wait for the One+ 5 and see what they offer...
I wish that the Nexus device hardware wasn't all so locked up, because I loved the software... So now I have to choose between hardware that can do what I want with locked down bloatware... Or software I can streamline, but is on hardware where when the battery dies I have to throw my phone away :silly:
And now with Fuchsia it looks like Google is trying to kill off what made the Nexus software so great also
With the number of phones out there, there should be at least one that has decent features AND is consumer oriented.
But thanks again for the responses :good:
