Funky Acting Home Screen. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a stock N5 running 6.0 that has a funky acting home screen. The only two icons that work are the app drawer and camera. Any other app icon does not respond. If you long press an icon it takes you to the widget/wallpaper screen. Like there's nothing there. The notifications at the top are grayed out. If you pull down it says "no notifications". I did a factory reset and problems still exists.
Appreciate any suggestions.

Home screen keeps restarting. Xperia x10i android 2.3.3

Last night flashed generic 2.3.3 from forum to phone. All running fine till today. Sometimes when exiting apps its like the home app has restarted. I lose the icons either side of the app drawer button then they come back. Weirdly if i go into the drawer lots of the icons have been replaced by empty space or a grey box. Then they slowly re appear. Anyone ever had this? All the menu order settings default also. Returning to my setting when what i guess is the home app finishes re loading.

Pull down notification screen in lock screen

Is there anyway to get the pull down notification screen on the lock screen if you have pin/pattern enabled?
I loved how iOS handled this, where you can see Notification Center in the lock screen but once you select a notification, you then have to unlock the device to go any further. Can this be done on Android?
BTW, I tried DashClock but it's very buggy on the N5 and does not do what I need. The pull down notification screen would work perfectly.
No this is not possible.

Thanks for the response, I guess the all mighty Andorid is not he customizable beast I was hoping it would be
Well you could just use the slide lock screen. Its not secure but the notification bar will be available.
Also there may be lock screen widgets that can show info you may be looking for like email, twitter, etc.

I saw this app mentioned in the apps section, but haven't tried it yet.. It's called Nils Notification Lockscreen..

Wait till XPosed is compatible with KK and you will get that feature.
Once xposed comes to 4.4 (soon), then so much more customization will be possible, including what you want to do.

Inconsistent expanding home screens?

After installing new apps, sometimes the icon appears in a new screen, sometimes I get a blank screen (that I can't remove until I reboot), sometimes nothing happens (and a new screen with shortcuts appears after a reboot).
Is this just me?

It's not just you, I have this bug too.
But if you want to remove the blank screen without reboot the device just move an icon to the blank screen then remove it again

This happens because sometimes after installing a new app, we move from that screen or perform another action before the new apps icon can be placed by default on a new screen. This results in a blank screen with nothing on it. You can't move or delete the homescreen because it renders that there should be a new app shortcut there, but we don't see one. So what i've done to avoid this is, wait for the app shortcut to push to the home screen, the remove it and that automatically gets rid of the home screen.
If it does show up blank again, as he recommended, just move something to that new screen then remove it again and it will disappear.
That new function is similar to that of iOS, when installing a new app, it tries to show you the shortcut to what you just installed, rather than having you manually create the short cut yourself.
Kind of annoying - agreed, but you adjust. It's second nature to me now.
You can have it not put the icons on your home screen by default in Google play settings. The option is place widgets on homescreen automatically. Disable that and newly downloaded apps stay in your app drawer for you to place manually if you want.

I think this is fixed in 4.4.1 or 4.4.2.
Installed and removed a handful of apps and the extra screens and app shortcuts now consistently do what they're supposed to do.

[Q] After an app update, the app icon disappears from home screen

I've seen this recurrently happening on my Nexus 5 (stock on 4.4.2).
I have an app shortcut on my home screen. An update becomes available for the app, so I update.
the icon vanishes from the home screen but the app is updated correctly and is in the app drawer.
I just need to drag it onto the home screen again to create a new shortcut.
Why is this happening? Can I prevent it? A search of the forums here only suggests that itc possibly because the icon is updated as part of the update and therefore the old app icon is removed? hmm... The app icon looks the same each time, but I suppose it could be that reason.
Thanks guys.
This sometimes happens, when the app gets a new or updated icon.
If this won't happens on all app updates, all is fine

There's a flashlight widget on the phone that works in the background. Just place a widget on the home screen and you'll find the flashlight widget on the list.
Try the app FLASHLIGHT, from ZERONE MOBIL INC. It's much brighter than the stock flashlight function.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zeroneapps.flashlight
Put the widget for it on your home screen and it will stay on until you turn it off no matter what you're doing on your phone. If you put the icon link for the app itself it will open the program to a giant button covering the whole screen. If it opens up like that it will close if you do anything else.
