No you can't downgrade. Once your on the 4.4.2 update/bootloader your stuck. There is one exception. If you can find a reliable jtag service that would be a viable option

If your on 4.4.2 you CAN'T unlock the bootloader. Your stuck on it and if you even attempt to downgrade or unlock it you will have an expensive paperweight. Your limited to safestrap for a recovery a only a few bootloader locked roms

Samsung should of done a developer edition...

I think Samsung dropped the ball on this one..They should of follow HTC and done a universal world GS4 developer edtion with 64gb+SD card. With bootloader unlocked. And works with LTE ATT and Tmobile also..
who knows that might be in the tow too
Bootloader is always unlocked on Galaxy devices. Rooting is also really easy.
No need for Developer Edition.

Engadget says bootloader is locked. Locked on Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon at the very least. Judging by how Sprint's GS4 has a locked bootloader, I'd be inclined to say that many, many more models are locked out of the box.
Root should be easy but I have a strong feeling that custom ROMs/kernels won't be nearly as easy.

I hope not. I need someone with an international i9500 or i9505 to post an image of their download mode text. If Write Protection is on, word needs to get out fast and devs need to jump on it because we will have a situation like the VZW GS3 on our hands.

Current status of rooting/custom ROMs?

So I just ordered an AT&T Note 3 and from what I'm reading it appears that I should be hoping it does NOT come with KK preinstalled, correct?
Everything I see tells me that if I'm on KK there is no current root method, yes?
Also, if I am able to root am I able to use the custom Roms available? I'm coming from a Nexus 5 so everything seems much more complicated over here ?

Sure you can root KK roms, but KNOX will be triggered to 0x1 and warranty could be voided (depending on where you live). Btw i came from a N5 too

If I don't care about voiding my warranty can I accept the official KK update and still get root?
Also, how do you like it compared to the N5? Did you keep your N5 or sell it?

Where do you live? You can download the latest available 4.4.2 rom from here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/2/ and flash it with Odin 3.07. After that flash a custom recovery and then flash the latest superSU.zip in recovery and you`re set. You can also flash a prerooted custom rom straight with a custom recovery. I sold my N5 cause i`am excited about the coming OnePlusOne phone and i might just try that one.

Last Unlocked Bootloader?

I'm searching for a Verizon GS3 with an unlocked bootloader. Are all 4.1.2 versions unlocked? What baseband version am I looking for?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
Technically all phones from the factory would be locked. But everything below android version 4.3 can be unlocked. So your options are:
1. A locked phone on a version of android less than 4.3.
2. A device that had beenpreviously unlocked and upgraded to 4.3 with a custom ROM.
4.4 is currently completely locked down.
So basically, if I can find one with 4.1.2, I can upgrade with the MOAR rom to 4.3, and still keep unlocked bootloader? It is based on ml1. I loved that rom with Sprint, and want it again

If your bootloader currently unlocked, you could flash any custom rom and you should be fine, just don't ever flash stock 4.3 or 4.4. They will locked you down ....forever..
Sweet. I have a guy checking his other stores for a 4.1.2. He thinks he has a few. I'm gonna trade my GS4 with kitkat straight up. That's how bad I want MOAR. I've been flashing roms with Sprint for over 4 years. This locked bootloader is a new beast to me

With the jtag service through mobiletechvideos they can revert you back to 4.1.2 and at that point you can unlock the bootloader

I emailed them, and am waiting for a response. If phone is downgraded to 4.1.2, and bootloader becomes unlockable, wouldn't it also be unlockable if downgraded by the other place? Forgive me, I spent my life with Sprint, and didn't have to deal with this stuff. Can android version be downgraded without changing the bootloader? Or can any bootloader be unlocked running 4.1.2?
ask him/her what firmware the phone is on. That will tell you everything. ML1 is what you are looking for. That is the last firmware, we have that's compatible with unlocking.

ML1 is 4.3. That firmware is bootloader locked. You're looking for MB1 or MF1 4.1.1 or 4.1.2.

NO this is only for VZW S3 the other carriers you can flash on KK Verzion locked it from 4.3 & up so to flash ROMS you have to downgrade it or you'll be stuck on TouchWiz yes MobileTech does it they do it for $50 tho

How to root?

Hello,
I have verizon razr hd xt926 stock version 4.4.2 i am unable to root through towelroot what is another solution for root, unlock bootloader and recovery.
Please help.
Take a look around and read a little bit but I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned a few times that once you upgrade to stock 4.4.2 there is no such thing as rooting or unlocking your bootloader anymore. They've locked it down. Google the specific version that you have.

Yes. You will forever have that device running whatever it is you have. NEVER take new OTAs until you read up on them and learn the effects of what the update does. Some updates are good to go and will allow you to unlock and root. Others, which it looks like in your case, will not allow you to unlock and root.
Best bet, find a broken device on ebay or amazon that is still able to be unlocked, buy it, and have it shipped to you. Also purchase any tools needed to open your device and a T5 screwdriver. Do a motherboard swap and then follow any guides on here to get the unlockable OTA to your device.
Good luck with this issue, we'll be here to help where/when we can.

There is absolutely no way to unlock bootloader on kit kat or newer, period. Attempting to use anything custom of any kind will only lead to a brick and then it requires JTAG to recover the device but even that isn't guaranteed.

Question: If I never intend to use the phone on a cell tower again - meaning I'm just using it at home on wifi - does that somehow allow me to do more than just root on 4.4? Even after debloating, this thing is getting really clunky and slow.
I wish there was a way to revert to a less-resource-demanding OS so that this phone could be faster for browsing, watching Netflix, controlling smart home stuff, etc.

If you have 4.4 then you're stuck with it. Your only other options are using Xposed or using Safestrap Recovery with modified stock ROMs but I think Safestrap is no longer available unless you find someone that has a copy somewhere, I think the modified stock ROMs are still available, not sure, I have the Straight Talk S3 and use the Verizon custom ROMs, never used Verizon S3 or Safestrap but I'm familiar enough with the Verizon S3 to know what you can and can't flash it with.

Um no. It was locked down by Verizon. You can thank them for it. The real reason is because they like to make customers miserable. But no the real reason is they want to have control of everything and don't like it when customers can take control of their own devices
