firefox crashing - Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone have any issues with firefox crashing? The only plugin I have installed is ublock origin, though same issues when I had adblock installed.
Really starting to annoy me as its been happening for month, and every time I report it.

On occasion, yes. Which is why I've swapped to Dolphin, Firefox has become very bloated in the last year, and it doesn't properly support HTML5, either.

thanks. at least that confirms its firefox. i'll just live in the hope they fix it. though many updates have passed without them doing so

Fennec pinch-zoom and stability problems...

For me, occasional crashing is the least of my problems with Fennec on my tablet. I've fully explored the altenatives and also landed on Dolphin. However, I was horrified to discover how aggressively Dolphin phones home - and tracks. Jetpack seems to open the data spigot even further. With privacy and versatility (plugins) in mind, I ran back to Fennec, hoping I could sort the worst of the bugs - which center around pinch-zooming.
This is what I sent to Mozilla:
Samsung SM-P900 12.2" Tablet
Kitkat 4.4.2 (Hyperdrive 2.1 ROM)
Firefox, F-Droid, Aurora, Nightly
UA: Desktop
Webpages: most
Problem: Pinch-zoom causes blank or disjointed pages.
Aggravating: multiple tabs open, content-rich
Pinch-zooming works well - until fingers are released from the screen... then all hell breaks loose. The viewport either snaps back to the original scale, or is filled with an overlapping, disjointed mix of elements (often duplicated) in two different scales, and/or obscured by blank rectangular boxes - or completely blank. (Or occasionally Firefox just crashes. Poof.)
Panning reveals correctly rendered (and scaled) page OUTSIDE of the viewport(?). In fact...
* Only after completely panning away from every trace of the bug-filled screen, will the original page region be rendered correctly after panning back. And, if the page is too short to pan away completely, then resolution is not possible - without reloading the page.
Anyone have any insights?

Netfront 3.5 Web Browser

Before having an HTC device, i was using Netfront (by access) to browse the internet. I installed the latest 3.5 technical trial version which runs until the end of November to see whether it was better than opera. Although the operation is quite different in principal, the rendering speed was far quicker than opera. Progam loading time and closing were also much much faster. Loading sites like facebook was not a problem, unlike opera that seems to struggle.
However, the downside....... if loading a very intesnive page like facebook, when exiting the application, the screen became corrupt in places......... simlilar in looks to the broken glass issue. I've now uninstalled it, and had no problems with the display since - however it is a shame as web loading was quicker and worked with many sites that opera can't handle.
Anyone else given it a go?
I tried facebook, and didn't have this broken glass issue. Tried a few other intensive pages but no issue either... Still my favourite browser the past year.
It was only noticable after extensive use of heavy web sites. The application that i noticed the screen corruption was mainly secondtoday although i did notice some weird effects in the mail application - several vertical lines on one occaisionbut mainly little dashes appearing when looking at an empty inbox.
I will probably try it again, as the browsing experience was good. I assume your are using 3.5 technical trial version?
UPDATE - TUrning off virtual canvas seems to have stopped it happening for now. Any suggestions?

[Q] Transformer browsers force closing

I keep having my browsers stop, they wont finish loading and then when I touch on the address search bar or refresh button on the screen I get the force close message. I'm having problems with the stock browser and also the dolphin hd browser too. It happens after about 10 minutes and I can't find any correlation with certain sites, it's just after a little time no matter what I'm looking at. I did a search and only came across someone saying they were having a problem but it was a xoom and they were also rooted. My transformer is all stock and only about a week old. Does anyone have any suggestions or anything? Besides that I love this thing. Thanks for the help.
some sites are inaccessible without crashing to the desktop. Web browsing is one of the major use cases for the transformer. It will be nice if this geta fixed.
Are you serious? I researched tide tablet for weeks before i decided on it. I knew about the cameras and taking videos not being good, I knee there was a chance for light bleed, and also that there were some problems with hd video playback sometimes. I hadn't read anything however on browsing problems. I tried Firefox and opera along with dolphin and they all stop and crash. I don't understand why someone didn't mention this in their reviews with it being a problem. I've had no problems with light bleed, video playback and the camera is fine for me, but the browsing problem would have dissuaded me from purchasing if I would have known. Is there no fixes at all?
The problem is java script, try to disable java

On Monday I'll have my Transformer for 2 weeks. I just started having browser crashes yesterday only after a couple of minutes of browsing. This has happened on yahoo & xda. At the time I was trying to copy & paste. What I don't understand is I wasn't having problems before.
Also, I am unable to do a search on XDA. The search & keyboard come up monetarily then close.

Yes, stock & not rooted
I never get force closing pop ups but everynow and then the browser just closes... but then it depends on the website
I;m running overclocked prime
Mine is just stock, I haven't rooted mine either. I can usually browse for 10 minutes or so before mine stops then force closes. It seems strange that it just started after 2 weeks for the one person. If the problem is Java and I turn it off won't that limit some of the sites? I hate to be limited on browsing, otherwise you might as well get a dang ipad. I hope we find a fix for this it's driving me crazy.
Stock, 3.1 not rooted. The crashing is site specific. It happens with Dolphin as well. Xscope will handle the site, but it has other usability issues (like no zoom) . Do other tablets (zoom, tab 10.1,etc) have these issues? I love paying to be a beta tester.
Same problem here, browser crashes on certain webpages without a warning, switching java off solves the problem but this shouldn't be a solution
Turning off Java Script does indeed help a lot it seems - faster loading and far less crashes. As a web technology noob what do I lose w/o Java script? I browse mostly news/science/tech blogs and forums. Not to many interactive (save Facebook of course).
Any good tips on what losing JV scrips limits?
Thanks!
This has been discussed before Its a known issues (at least to us that have them) and its pretty annoying to say the least. Turning off javascript helps in two different ways (stops crashes and speeds up browsing), but some pages wont display correctly without it.
i resolved crashes with "adfree"
I've never seen my browser as prone to crash or sluggish on the transformer. The only thing I configured is to start plugins on click only (like poor man flashblock - but I prefer it this way on my desktop Chrome too). Running stock 3.1.
i wwill try the adfree and I will post my results.
I've had my Transformer for about three weeks and besides slowing down quite a bit the stock browser and Dolphin have been crashing regularly as of last week. I'm running stock 3.1 - not rooted or anything. It's gotten bad enough that I've basically stopped using it and am using my Acer W500 and iPad. I can put up with some problems in a new unit but if I had known that Honeycomb was as buggy as it seems to be so far I probably would not have purchased this.
i got mine last week, the default browser performance is unacceptable. It just crashes without any warning. Clicking comboboxes , checkboxes and even links in some cases is far too difficult to get right with one go, there are instances where you simply cant do it at all , even after zooming all the way in. Turning off JavaScript is not an option for me, there are simply too many sites using JavaScript for their manus n stuff. Now using dolphin browser, seemsmuch better, but still unreble.I am a huge android supporter, i have a galaxy s and i love it. But recently i compared this against an ipad 2, i hate to say this but with current firmware (3.1 stock, not rooted) this tablet is far inferior to the ipad when it comes to web browsing. I hate apple products, but at this point id rather have an ipad, over this

[Q] ICS and javascript

Since upgrading to ICS several days ago, two websites that I frequently visit on my tab are malfunctioning - seems to be javascript-related and somewhat browser independent. The sites are pcworld.com and nbcnews.com. In general, on pcworld.com, links don't work. Nothing happens when I tap them (they do highlight in light blue - that's all). On nbcnews.com, which forces the mobile site using some browsers, the links to stories and the down arrow to "show more stories" don't work. Both of these situations (pcworld and nbcnews) exist for the stock browser, Dolphin, and Chrome (also installed and tried Maxthon and Skyfire just to check - same issue there), but both sites work fine in Firefox and Opera. However, if I disable javascript in Dolphin, pcworld.com works fine, and I can link to stories on nbcnews. The "show more stories" in nbcnews.com still doesn't work but the screen behaves a bit differently when I tap it. Chrome, by the way, pretty much goes non-functional if I disable javascript in it - none of the browser control buttons such as bookmarks, recent sites, etc. work at all.
Pcworld was definitely working before going to ICS. I think nbcnews had gotten a little squirrelly. My conclusion that it's a javascript issue is based on the fact that disabling javascript restores link function to pcworld and at least to the nbcnews.com stories. Any thoughts?

I am currentlyon stock ICS DDLP5. it works fine with the stock browser. Also works with dolphin, firefox chrome and opera. No issues.
So now some people are actually getting the update from Verizon, and these websites seem to be working fine for them. I upgraded per Electron73's post. What might be different about my tab now than those who are getting upgraded by Verizon that would cause this issue?
Is it possible that the problem is that Electron73's instructions by which I upgraded to ICS result in a rooted device? I'm totally ignorant of this stuff and have no idea what possible problems could arise from being rooted. If that could be the problem, how can I unroot? I have no need to be rooted.
rooting only opening an acces to the device with administrator account... it only put 2 files to your device... one is a program to govern the root... superuser or supersu and another one is system/xbin/su binary files. that's it... to fully unroot you just need to delete this 2 files from your device.

Thanks. I've done that now. I didn't really think that would fix my problem, and it didn't.
I've read that people who got their tab updated by Verizon / Samsung (many by sending them in) have i815.07 V.LP10 / I815LP10 (note the .07) vs. the .04 that I have installed. Possible issue?

That's what I'm thinking. I wish electron could get an updated version. My wife is tired of seeing some elements on some of her favorite websites just not show up (images, links, etc). No way I'm unrooting until Verizon/Samsung get their OTA mess sorted out though.
As I mentioned, the websites that aren't working for me are failing in the stock browser, dolphin, chrome, and every other browser I've tried except Firefox, Opera, and now Puffin. Tonight I stumbled upon how to view the javascript console in the stock browser. When I view the javascript console after attempting to follow a link to an article on pcworld.com, I see a long ULR (with static.ak.facebook.com in the middle), followed by the console message "Given URL is now allowed in the Application configuration.: One or more of the given URLs is not allowed by the App's settings. It must match the Website URL or Canvas URL, or the domain must be a subdomain of one of the App's domains." there is a different message about Viewport argument value "device-width;" when I try to navigate the mobile nbcnews.com website. Pcworld works fine if I disable javascript; on the nbcnews mobile site, I can link to articles with javascript disabled but I still can't "Show more stories." Wierdly, about every 1000 tries or so (literally), a link or "Show more stories" will randomly work with javascript enabled, but only for one try.
Any ideas??
Yet another issue - hitting the back button in the stock browser, Dolphin, etc., usually doesn't take me to the previous visited webpage; it just reloads the current page (with some exceptions). If not for Opera and Firefox, my tab would basically be useless for web browsing. (Interestingly, Chrome does not have this issue even though it shares the stock browser and Dolphin's issue of not being able to follow links on nbcnews.com, pcworld.com, etc.) I like the device but am starting to wonder if I should give it up... Any idea if reverting to Honeycomb (!) would restore web browsing? HC was crap but at least I could use the browser.
Based on a little back and forth with Dolphin support and some deductive reasoning, it seems clear to me that any webkit-based browser is going to give me the same issues. I read this morning that Opera is getting ready to abandon its in-house web engine in favor of webkit. That will leave me with just Firefox and Puffin (which some say is insecure and in any case lacks a lot of basic features), neither of which I really like using.
So something seems inherently broken in webkit in the i815.04 V.LP10 version of ICS I have installed. I suppose many don't use their tablets extensively for web browsing so maybe this isn't an issue for most users, but I do browse a lot with it and now feel like my tab is "broken" (sort of the way I felt with Honeycomb that prompted me not to wait for Verizon to fix its failed update). I went so far as to buy a Nexus 7 yesterday morning, but I really didn't like the display and returned it in the afternoon.
I think in Electron73's post there was a link to a download that could be applied to return the tab to Honeycomb. Is that true, and if so has anyone tried reverting and then getting ICS through the OTA update? (It seems that people who have v.07 instead of .04 don't have the browsing problems I've been posting about.) If I reverted to Honeycomb (assuming that's possible) and couldn't get the update OTA, would Verizon / Samsung detect that it had been modified if I tried to get the update by sending it in as so many have had to do? Any other thoughts on possible fixes? Obviously I am pretty ignorant...

It seems as if my browsing issues may not be similar to what you're experiencing. What I was seeing on my wife's was images not showing up on certain shopping websites (no matter what browser she used) , and sponsored links not working in Google searches. I discovered the problem: the hosts file is NOT stock, and is set to block a lot of sites, or elements within them. I removed every entry in the file except for 127.0.0.1 localhost, and EVERY problem she was having has disappeared!

It was a bit of a PITA at first since none of my edits would stick. Finally found an app called Hosts Editor Pro in the Store. Soon as you open it up, it seems to replace the current file with a very basic one. Once I rebooted after that, I checked the contents of the file, and only the one entry was there.

So do you happen to know if she can follow links on the sites I mentioned (nbcnews.com, pcworld.com) without any problem? And go back to the previous page by hitting the back button? I think one person replied to my original question that they could not, but I'm still trying to figure out if it's some anomaly or a universal result of updating to 4.0.4 in this manner.

When you flashed electrons build, did you use the wipe version, or not?

I tried to no-wipe first, but it hung for about a half hour, so I went back and did the wipe version.
I've given up on it. I'm giving the tab to my daughter, who won't care about a few browsing incoveniences. I went to Verizon today and bought a new one. I was nervous because I planned to return it if it wouldn't get ICS OTA and they said there would be a $70 restocking fee. But when they stuck the SIM card in and started setup, I could see that it already had ICS on it (the bright blue circle was spinning). The setup didn't look fresh (didn't start with the setup wizard or whatever it's called -- booted directly into the default homepage), even though the tab was sold as new and certainly appears to be. Also, Baseband is i815.04, not .07. My uneducated guess is that the've taken new ones in the warehouse that had Honeycomb and flashed ICS, then shipped them to the stores, so they won't have to deal with all the the returns.

New Chrome version no LAG

The version of Chrome just released stopped me from either throwing this thing at a wall or (more likely) unlocking and flashing. Up until today, every browser, including Chrome, would load to 90%, then hang for ten seconds or so. If I tried to interact with the page in any way before it finished loading, I'd get the dreaded "xxxx isn't responding, Would you like to close it?.... Wait - OK".
This version (25.0.1364.169), will let me scroll around freely and start reading text while it continues loading pictures and ads. Amazing!
Of course, I will probably unlock and flash a rom eventually, I just wanted to use it for a few months with warranty and maybe wait for 4.2.2 to be released first. I have had very few complaints with the device besides that hanging/error message issue.
I still prefer the stock browser with the Labs 'swipe from edge' hidden address bar feature, but maybe something like that will come to Chrome eventually. Does anyone know how to auto-hide the address bar and tabs in this version of Chrome? Meantime I will use Chrome for all sites where full screen viewing is not vital.

Hmm it's still very laggy compared to CROMI and stock browser I'm afraid.
I agree with sbdags cromi and stock browser combo is smoother and more responsive, even compared to latest chrome release . Actually I've found that to be the case for any other browser as well.
Seconded.
I too have a huge performance increase with the new chrome. I'm on CM10.1 so the improvements must not be specific to stock. Glad you posted this :good:; I'd given up on chrome because of laginess. Now I can have my "other devices tab" and good performance at the same time. Biggest noticeable change for me is (as you found) scrolling while pages load.
Noticed the Chrome update this a.m.
Tried it on the usual sluggish java heavy websites still not as snappy as stock under CROMi + B2Ram.
Chrome is slightly better with this update...it's just not a preference with me over stock or BOAT ad free.
For the people using chrome on stock its the Brest version so far. A lot of things got better. Page loading is a lot better when compared to the older version. And the scrolling is great too.
I thought that browser2ram worked with Chrome as well, or was that a specially tweaked version?
@sbdags: I thought I'd seen a Chrome-capable version in CROMI before?
If this is the case, well, then Chrome is just still slower than stock anyway. I love speed dials, but I hate them being so limited in number. The sync capabilities were nice, but ever since the stock browser started supporting sync too I haven't looked back. I traditionally hated stock browser -- be it on Android or on Windows -- but the current one on Android is pretty good with browser2ram attached.
Just thought id chime in on this. Unfrtunately cannot report the same decreased lag with the new Chrome update. In fact, id say it is worse. Unusable actually, which is no loss for me as i use stock...... which is a lag-machine as well, just slightly less so. Ironically, of all the websites i visit regularily, XDA seems to be the most taxing and almost always will produce a FC if i dont let it fully load before attempting to scroll. When i test a browser update i come here to see how fast the page loads!!!
At any rate, i deal with it and still love this tab....

Agreed, google chrome is slow, and it wont allow flash, fck google chrome, a browser is useless without flash bc you can barely access any content that isnt text or pics, accessing content is the whole point of the internet. Browsing was a headache until i started using stock browser with B2RAM. browser2RAM more than doubles browsing speed, responsiveness, and smoothness. Stop dicking around with stock ASUS tf700, it is a waste of your time. All the time you spend waiting to browse the web can be spent on ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING.

Screen freezing while scrolling

Hi All, I have had three phone for the last 2 weeks. This week the phone has frozen at least 3/4 times a day while browsing. Generally happens when scrolling down, I use the Google Chrome browser. The only way to reactivate the screen is by pressing power button to turn off the screen and turning the screen back on again. I just hope it's not a hardware fault ? O just wondering if there a setting I need to change.
Chrome was having issues.
Try another browser like opera see if that changes anything
Mate, don't use Chrome. It is one of the worst browsers on Android. I recommend using the Brave browser or an older version of Firefox.

Thanks for your replies guys. I take it the concensus is not to use Chrome on Android phones ? Will try out Firefox for now as that seems to be a well known browser.
I was getting it loads on my XZ2 brand new X5II and gutted to still get it.
I've switched to DuckDuckGo browser now, pretty seamless so far.
Also, many websites, even the biggest ones, are poorly optimized for smartphones. Lots of ads or badly implemented scrips, lazyload etc. But most problems are usually caused by a browser.
I've had this issue too, but ironically with Brave, as frostitomik suggested to use instead of Chrome .
Quick fix for me is to use the task switcher soft key, but choose the same browser app again. It seems to unlock it.
Same here in different Apps. Never saw it on my other phones. I think it's a Sony issue.
I am using sony as well, but you could search on Google, people are experiencing the same problem on different phone models that could be dated back to 2019.
A different app is usually still using a chromium base browser, did you try firefox?
Tho, I found the freezing "app" problem would only occurred when u are browsing website with a relatively heavy load in images and videos, or a very long document.
My personal solution is simply pressing the overview button and going back to the browser.
