Hi there,
I got a "certified like new" D800 from an At&t Device Support Center recently and it came with the latest OTA D80020y.
I'm trying to figure out what the most conservative way to root 20y would be.
I've looked into:
- IOroot25: Seems like it only supports up to D800 10q.
- Towelroot v3 by geohot: This post makes me think towelroot won't work with 20y (confirms that ioroot won't work either).
- Stump Root?: As I understand it's for Sprint/Verizon G3, but this post confirms that it will likely work on D80020y with a brute force method (not sure what that entails).
So stump root sounds like the only option for rooting on 20y, but does anyone know if there is any issues or risks associated with this brute force method compared with other root methods?
Is the safest way to get root for someone on 20y to simply use the LG Flash Tool and go back to older KK or JB firmware? If that is the case, which firmware is ideal for rooting?
I don't want custom recovery at this point, but I will eventually when I grow weary of the LG overlay.
Hopefully this thread will help others who find themselves on D80020y and want root privileges (or even get recovery for that matter). I think if you're planning on getting recovery and flashing a new firmware, LG Flash Tool is the way to go though. I just don't want to abandon my setup simply for root.

im on 20y and been using Stump root since day one. Absolutely no issues for me. You brute force it, it takes 2 or 3 minutes then it asks you to reboot. reboot, install superSU then you are golden.
From 20u, I OTA updated to 20y then used Stump to root (bruteforce of course). Everything works fine since.
It works just smooth.. no hiccups at all..
Its worked like charm.. I was really hesitated to root my device as it was my first time to root to get my lost files which I accidentally deleted. I saw this post and thought of giving a try. The steps I followed are
1. Installed stump root on my device (downloaded and transferred from my mac)
2. it will ask permission to Bruteforce and select yes.
3. it takes less than a minute to install
4. restarted twice
5. installed supersu and rootchecker
6. Done.. got ROOT access.
Can anyone please please suggest me how to get deleted files from my LG G2. I deleted 2 files to save memory and later realized that I need that files and it contained my important data.

Hey guys I just bought an LG g2 for my little brother and I'm looking for a way to unlock the bootloader... I used stump root to root it like i did my g3 but can't find a way to unlock the bootloader... Even when googling it I can't find nothing... Appreciate the help

my girlfreind has a lg g2 d80020y like stated above i tryed serveral different methods and only one worked , use autorec that was the only one that worked for me, its also very simple to use theres a video on you tube that shows how to do it, just 3 button clicks and your done but check your model number
I unrooted, OTA'd to 80020y, rooted with stump root and now can't seem to get a recovery installed. Any hints on getting TWRP or CWM?

So, I have a D80020y unrooted. First I must use Stumproot to get root, and then use Autorec to install TWRP, right?

I completely messed up my wife's new LG G2 by flashing the wrong recovery image through TWRP (like an idiot). My immediate inability to get into recovery mode led me down a rabbit hole filled with failed solutions... each one compounding the problem more and more until it all snowballed into a situation where the 'Settings' function in Android stopped working altogether, I had no recovery, and download mode froze every time I attempted to use it. Despite all this, somehow my computer still recognized the phone as a media device >> All I had left was the ability to drag and drop files into the internal storage.
... and then I came across this magnificent link to AutoRec that you posted and flashed the proper version of TWRP onto the phone effortlessly. I downloaded it, launched it through File Manager, dropped the CloudyG2 Rom onto the SD card, and installed that S.O.B. with ease. THE PHONE WORKS LIKE AN ABSOLUTE CHAMP NOW. Flawless.
I never... NEVER post on forums, but I made this account specifically to tell you "Thank you!". Sorry folks for bringing up an old post but i need some serious opinion on this one;
-Couple of months ago when there was a deal on eBay when AT&T LG G2 32GB went on sale like real cheap, I've purchased one for myself. Ever since than its been rock solid n performed well on daily tasks. pretty much handles everything i through at it.
-For the last few days i've been going through serious Battery Drain because of Android OS(Kernel), Pics i've attached, kindly check for brief idea about what i'm been through.
-No intention of Rooting it, though I'm aware of rooting devices in the past. But If anyone has encountered such issue and found a way out, i'll be happy. I just don't want to Root my device. That's what the main purpose of this post.
-I've done factory reset once 2 days ago but ratio to Screen On Time to Android OS is always like 1:2, you may check on attachment.
-There's no such app could cause Battery drain, Bcos i've been using the same apps for over a month n never encountered such in the past Or any of other devices.
-If Rooting is the last option then guide me the steps, If I'm doing anything wrong or not.
For the record I've d80020y build come PreInstalled, last OTA for 4.4.2 from AT&T
Steps:
-Fully Charged > Unplug it > Under Settings > Turned on USB Debugging while tapping 7 times on Build number.
-Mark on Unknown application Under Security.
-Insatll Stump Root v1.2 .apk
-Hit Grind > If Message pop ups > choose Brute Force > Ask for Reboot > After that Install SuperSU from PlayStore.
That's all about Rooting the device. But what about Bootloader? How to Unlock the bootloader?
As i go through several thread, it redirects me onto AutoRec to flash TWRP over Stock recovery. But my concern, Does Rooting will Unlocked the bootloader on itself? Or Have to follow fastboot commands to do it.
Do i have to partitioned my device, like External or Internal, as my all previous devices had MicroSD support whereas this one is 32GB Inbuilt.

Okay, so I may be beating a dead horse, but I have literally sat for hours trying to achieve root. I have tried the one click method, script method, and others; all of which have failed. I apologize in advance if I have over looked a recent and updated thread regarding the AT&T G3 root methods.
I am running:

Kernel Version 3.4.0
I just want root access so I can get rid of all this garbage software they force on the AT&T G3 users. Thanks in advance.
Hey there man. I searched high and low as well for a root method when I got my G3 a couple weeks ago. It was already on Lollipop, so Stump was a non-starter for me. There's 2 ways you can get root for your phone:
1) Follow the guide to downgrade it back to KitKat using the .tot file and LG Flash tool ( You will loose ALL data stored on the phone FYI). Then install Stump to root, and then install Flashify from the Play Store so you can installed a Bump'd version of TWRP for your custom recovery if you ever want to install something else other than the stock ROM.
OR......
2) Install KingRoot on your computer. Enable USB Debugging on your phone first though, and connect it. Open KingRoot and let it do its thing. It's in all Chinese (or Japanese), but just click the button. Give it a few minutes and you should be set. Keep in Mind that KingRoot is NOT SuperSU. However, they both provide root access.

TowelRoot worked perfectly fine for me on Lollipop. I rooted it that way, then installed AutoRec for Lollipop and installed TWRP custom recovery, right from the phone, within Android, no PC or rebooted into a special mode required. Took me all of about 5 minutes or less!!!

With the software level on your phone you need to go into McAfee and disable the Lock Down "feature" that prevents enabling USB debugging.
Just wanted to point out that if you install TWRP you will not be able to boot your phone due to a security error, for it to work you need a different kernel.

I haven't been able to get it past pushing the files. Through the auto script it gets stuck on 15% pushing files.

Okay, so it seems there may have been some interference between an app and the data push. I ended up putting the phone into safe mode, run the root.bat, and presto! I HAVE ROOT! THANK THE ANDROID GODS (and shawkes)! Now to remove all of this damn bloatware!
Congrats man. I couldn't get those scripts to work. I blame my Windows 10 machine and it's USB 3.0 ports.

The info for downgrading to kit kat does not work. It tells you to do something with com setting or something in devices or something but there is no such thing.
I found a solution for rooting my D801 running Android 5.0.2. I used KingRoot to gain root access and then Super-Sume Pro to remove KingRoot and install SuperSU. I have not installed TWRP because I am going to stay on stock. It was difficult to find a one-click solution so I hope this helps someone else.
Kingroot has worked for me, too. Nothing else worked, no matter what I did. But Kingroot works great! Thanks for posting.
I have tried Purple Drake, ioroot, StumpRoot, and LGOneClickRoot. None of these worked. I'm particularly chagrined over the ioroot failure because ioroot is listed in the Cyanomodgen installation instructions.
I have not tried Kingroot and am hopeful it's the answer to my prayers.
Could you please confirm your T-Mobile Lollipop software info with mine to make sure we're on the same page? Many thanks.

Now for the bad news. Super-Sume Pro does NOT remove KingRoot v4.8.0 (latest version). I like having a rooted phone, but I don't like having Spyware running on it that chews up bandwidth. How do I get rid of this thing? Brute force delete of binaries?
UPDATE: I got rid of KingRoot via method 2 at https://www.droidmen.com/remove-replace-kingroot-kinguser-with-supersu/. Unfortunately although RootChecker claims the phone is rooted none of the apps that need root can find the su binary because the SuperSU installation failed. Effectively the phone is un-rooted since apps requiring root are inoperable. So back to square 1. It's a big steaming pile of you-know-what.
UPDATE: I retraced my steps and re-ran the shell script of method 2 above. This time it worked. Kingroot is gone, SuperSU 2.49 is installed, and the phone is rooted according to root checker. The phone seemed strangely unstable for a while, but seems to have settled into normal behavior. Don't know if that was a consequence of this procedure or is possibly a hardware problem (battery?). Will keep a close eye on it, but for now all the apps that need root have it. Contemplating the installation of TWRP via GooManager, but that's not a high priority right now.
If anyone reading this is a bloatware removal expert (especially with regard to LG & T-Mobile) I'd like to hear from you. Tools that I've seen mentioned in this regard are Titanium Backup, System App Remover, and Clean Master.

Did you by any chance install TWRP? If so, how did you unlock the bootloader? I'm looking for a pain free unlock. Held out hope for FreeGee, but despite claims to the contrary this app doesn't support many G2 variants such as mine, the D801 30c (T-Mobile).

Don't try it with Flashify. It'll destroy your recovery. Before trying any custom recovery make sure you have the stock kdz on hand so you can flash the stock recovery if need be.
UPDATE: I was able to flash the stock recovery.img. Of course that doesn't help as far as TWRP is concerned, but at least you wouldn't have a totally munged recovery on the phone.
UPDATE: Was able to successfully install TWRP using Autorec after figuring out that the SuperSU "Mount Namespace Separation" setting needs to be cleared/unchecked.

So I finally tried to root my phone. Tried the LG One Click Root first and as posted here it did not work right. I have now SuperSU on the phone but I can't grant root to anything. Rootchecker shows no root. Now I tried Kingoroot and SuperSU asks to grant access but I can't confirm it. Looks like I have to first get rid of SuperSU? Stuck here not sure what I need to do the get rid of the butchered SuperSU install. Any tips?
Can someone point me to where I can get the AutoRec version that works on D801 Lollipop?

I was able to do the same using KingRoot-4.1.0.249-release-nolog-201505211812_105241.apk and Super-Sume-v9.1.9.apk
If KingRoot tells you "Unable to get root strategy" or "Failed to acquire cloud issued Root strategy", try to reboot once or twice before trying anything else!

I recently bought the LG Phoenix 2 (LG k371) from ATT, and I really want to root it. But alas, I was unable to find any root method that works for my phone. Does anyone know of a method that will currently work for my device? It is running MarshMallow 6.0. I can update with any other info needed.

KingRoot app will temp root this phone and you can uninstall all the at&t crap just fine but I needs to be re rooted every time you restart the phone I had to uninstall KingRoot my phone keeps randomly rebooting if its rooted with it

BUMP: I really need a method for this...
I have the same phone. Kingroot did work for me. You have to run it several times but it does eventually work. Also had the random reboot issue on occasion but I did get the bloatware off. What I would like to know is once its temp rooted, is there a method to get permanent root? Any custom recoveries that work for this?
Well I totally boned my phone I think. Kingroot works but it caused a lot of instability. It reboots the phone within minutes of getting temp rooted. So I tried supersume to remove kingroot (which seems to also have a pretty bad reputation as far as privacy goes) to replace kingroot with supersu. Everything seemed to go fine, the binary updated and looked good. Once the phone reboots though, it freezes on the AT&T logo. When I try to factory reset the android pops on screen for about 5 seconds and nothing changes. I can't do anything with adb. Whenever I try to list devices the phone is detected but it says it isn't "Authorized". If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate it.

Installing super su when rooted with king will brick Everytime you can temp root to uninstall the at&t bloat but that's about as far as I got phone keeps rebooting every few minutes when rooted I think I'll just get a new phone
I'm really not a fan of the fact that this device de-roots itself on every reboot, I know the developers have more popular models to address, so I'm not complaining. I was just wondering if anyone knows a way to keep that from happening and safely get rid of KingRoot and put SuperSU on instead...

Stay away from Kingroot and supersume, you are going to brick your phone!!! You'll have to send it in to LG, and your phone will never be the same again!!!
It only takes one attempt of kingroot, and no more security updates from at&t, Error: !!your device is suspected of rooting!!
(even if you uninstall kingroot & unroot)

Anyone have any advice on hacking into the system somehow to bypass the boot loader in order to fix the bridging problem at&t left us with? Or possibly something like flashily to flash directly to device or so we can disable bootloader security, or bypass at&t security or something like the old school ways hacking the system if possible. I don't understand HW,SW,KERNEL,LINUX,CODE,APPS so its hard for me to hack it myself. Although, I have successfully rooted, flashed supersu and twrp'd my htc one m9. I have been into buildprops and enabled hotspot tethering and disabled data throttle through proxy servers and HSM. I just don't know where or how to start the root procession this device Cuz I'm still a newb. Please no one click root suggestions, I prefer the knowledge not the instant gratification! LG k371 is one of the k8 series.
All K8 were compressed at lz4 not the gzip. SuperSU v2.66 (and other previous system-less version of supersu installer) can't decompress LZ4-compressed kernel. So that procedure won't finish the last step.
There might be two ways to solve this issue, either repacking into gzip, or waiting for supersu's support to lz4.
I guess the supersu's support to lz4 could be easier. But I don't think ppl are working on it.
At that thread, someone succeed rooting another K8 model (LG K8 k350n), with a different chipset, Mediatek MT6735 . I guess you could check it out.

Did you try booting the phone into fast boot settings?
I was messing with a bunch of stuff like supersu me, trying to replace kingroot with supersu in terminal emulator, but I don't think that had anything to do with it. I re-ran kingroot today, and now, even if I power it off all the way, or reboot, it still holds root! Permanent root is a big step, but I always want more. lol. I'm hoping there will be a way to replace it with supersu soon, and get flashfire working. On 5.1.1 BOH4 Good luck everyone!
Edit: I have no idea how I was able to keep a permanent root, but alas, I had to go messing with $#!+, and end result was having to flash stock firmware and not be able to get permanent root again. I'm not sure if things I was messing with played a strange part, or if somehow kingroot magically went through that one time, but it sucks to have lost it. I can replace kingroot with supersu using a Replace_Kinguser_with_SuperSU-v2.4 zip file, flashing it in terminal emulator, then using a power menu for root app to soft reboot before kingroot fail errors start to pop up. Sadly, if hard reboot or power off and on are done, root with supersu are wiped. If you do this, don't update the su binary or you'll hang at at&t logo in a softbrick.

Not sure what you mean. TWRP doesn't work on most samsung devices 5.0 & up. Also, Kingroot is limited, so as of now, flashfire doesn't work. What I'm hoping is, the supersu me app will be updated to replace the current kingroot with supersu, which should fix the flashfire problem. If flashfire works, I'm pretty sure custom roms can be flashed after that. Busybox is installable.

if i remember right theres some files thst you need to delete to prevent "unroot" in boot...... similar to stock recovery flashing back on some devices after installing twrp or cwm
My rooting experience with kingroot has been temp root, with reboots causing soft brick, an update to kingroot making reboots possible without bricking, but causing unroot, and the latest update where it retains root after reboot. So whatever they did, it's working now. It is limited, however, as I doubt cwm or twrp is flashable, and flashfire doesn't work with kingroot.
What I don't want is for people to doubt me. It's easy to download the latest kingroot and try it. The lp fix boot.tar is still available, but you'll see, you won't need it. And the stock firmware .tar is available so you really have nothing to lose. What I'm hoping is, more people do it so we can move forward. I'd like to see a new version of supersu me, and flash fire working. Get to a point where we see some custom roms.
Which version of KingRoot did you use? 5.0.0 or 5.0.1?
Tried KingRoot v5.0.1 app and root doesnt stick after reboot. It actually took much longer to root then it takes with 5.0.0 version.
There is also two versions of KingRoot from different KingRoot websites; a 13.7mb and 18.5mb version. Large version, has ads and nagging notifications.

If you're talking about the actual apk app for android, there is no version 5.0 or 5.0.1, the latest version is 4.9.2
You need to make sure you're going to Kingroot's actual website, otherwise you're going to end up on weird websites claiming to have the newest version and all that, end up with "ads and nagging notifications." lol. I bet if you opened up the kingroot app you downloaded, hit the options button (3 dots) in the top right corner and selected "about app," you'd see a different version of kingroot than 5.0, 5.0.1, or 4.9.2
If you're referring to the pc method, then I'm not sure what version that is. It pops up in a foreign language, and you might want to look up how to follow the steps accordingly. I'd be willing to bet that the pc version works just as well, though. Hope you figure out where you went wrong. Good luck.

Well I'll be damned. I just downloaded it and you're right. I just hate eating crow. I apologize. I will say that the reason I was insistent on it being the latest update is because that's what I did, was have my version kingroot (4.9.2 143) check for updates and it says it's up to date. I downloaded it from the official site, tried it, and had success the same day I posted this thread. My kernel version says v4.8.0 67, and my Su version says v3.61
I would be interested, if you were willing, to hear your results after trying version 4.9.2. Also, did you try it on the pc to see the difference? If none of this works, is there a developer that I could somehow give a system dump to, maybe to see how I have root still, including after reboots? I'm not making this up, and would be willing to show you on skype if you pm me. I'm afraid to unroot it now and try it again. lol

I tried the PC app twice but, it was annoying having to read the instructions on their site because they didnt translate it. The root did stick once with PC app. Not sure what made it unstick. I think its because i cleared cache in the recovery mode but, i didnt test that theory, i switched to apk.
The manual update option in the apk doesn't work properly, each time it tells me that current version is up to date. So the auto update is also useless.
I'll test the 4.92 version of KingRoot apk on the tablet and get back to you with the results. At the end of the day, i have no need for permanent root after I debloated the tablet.

I replied to this comment a while ago, so I thought. lol. You ever reply to something, hit submit, and come back later to find it not posted? grrr. Thank you for at least trying again. It wouldn't seem likely that by simply clearing the cache, root would get wiped. I almost want to try it myself. What I wrote was that I would, if possible, love to do a system dump, or whatever they call it, so a developer could take a look at how and why I have permanent root. That would be to say that a developer would be interested at all. Supersu just froze in the process, and I read it's because kingroot now patched it so it wouldn't remove their root. Would be cool to get supersu on it and maybe get a custom rom or two.

According to what I've seen on a SM-G900A thread, the NewKingrootV4.81_C136_B245_xda_release_2016_02_29_105243.apk was the last revision that didn't block supersume from working properly.

I read that too, but you know what, it still doesn't work. I've found a zip file called Replace_Kinguser_with_SuperSU-v2.4 that works. What you do is install a power menu for root users first, then root with kingroot. Next, you install the replace kinguser zip using terminal emulator, which there are instructions online and on youtube on how to do it. Once you've replaced kingroot with supersu, quickly use the power menu app to do a soft reboot, as to avoid kingroot failure errors. DO NOT update the su binary. Only problem is, if you do regular reboot, or power off the tab, then power it back on, root is lost again. I have no idea how I got permanent root with kingroot, but I've lost it now while messing with things. I wish I would've tried to replace it with supersu this way when I had it just to see if it woul've still retained permanent root as well. Now what?!?! lol

I'm not sure if he's saying to keep rebooting, and re-rooting until root sticks permanently, or to leave kingroot running without rebooting for a long time, and permanent root will sink in eventually. I think he means the second one, too leave it running without rebooting. On a sidenote, I have been able to use a replace kingroot with superuser 2.74 via terminal emulator with success, even after rooting with latest version kingroot. Updating supersu binary results in softbrick on reboot though. If you don't update user binary, and you reboot, you just lose root, is all. And sometimes the zip doesn't work, and it takes reboot, re-root with kingroot, then re-run terminal emulator. Flashfire doesn't like kingroot, but it opens up with supersu after this method. Not sure if it can actually flash zips though. Just thought I'd share my latest findings.

Thanks for the info. An interesting discovery! After going back and reading that guy's article again, I noticed that he posted a link to download kingroot. I was curious what version he used. It was 4.8.1 . When I tried downloading 4.8.1 from the xda link you gave me, it kept popping up with a network error. This time I downloaded 4.8.1 somewhere else and tried it. After root, I kept closing kingroot, swiping it clear in task manager, and re-opening it until it gave me the notice that it deployed itself as a system app. I then rebooted (not soft reboot) and it partially kept a permanent root this time. If I went into root checker, it would tell me no root, but other apps were popping up the grant permission tab. I'm sure I'll get root to stick permanently again, then I'll try to install supersu over it again, see if I can't get that as a permanent root. It's not the end of the world to me either, but it just drove me nuts not knowing how the hell I got it. Also, it's just fun to mess with stuff. lol. So in the chain of updates, 4.8.1 is right before 4.9.2, so I'm guessing that I probably got permanent root from 4.8.1 and then updated it, or possibly that I ran 4.8.1, updated, and maybe optimizing or running root again with 4.9.2 finished the job.
