Root mode in CM13 File Manager?? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Maybe I'm dense, but I can't figure out how to enable root mode in the file manager of the new cm13 nightly.
I have root enabled in the rom, but the file manager won't play ball.

I've had the same issue myself. In pondering this problem a Google search led me here.
Here's what I have observed..
CM13 File Manager will not ask for root access while SELinux mode is set to, "Enforcing."
Setting SELinux Mode to, "Permissive," allows File Manager to access root. However, can only read and not write. You can not modify the system, it is labeled, "Read-Only."
Internal storage becomes labeled, "Read-Only".
Attempting to access external SDcard will cause a dialogue to appear, saying, " You need elevated permissions to access. Try changing to Root-Access Mode." Although you already are in Root-Access Mode.
Changing SELinux Mode back to, "Enforcing," and restarting File Manager will then make everyrhing back to normal with no root access.
I know this doesn't answer your question, but it gives some explination. Maybe?
Using a 3rd party app, such as, "ES File Manager,” will work just fine for root access. But the built in File Manager doesn't. It seems like an issue in CyanogenMod to me. Maybe something with Google code and security patching? I'm sure someone knows. I'm back to searching. ?

[Q] Lost root access?

Hi guys android newbie here! My friend rooted my Nexus 5 and it was working fine for a couple of weeks. Yesterday I tried to open SuperSU and it didn't work! Other apps that required root didn't work either.
I have been looking around and it seems OTA updates may have screwed up my root. Every time I try to open SuperSU it says: "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem!" If you just upgraded to Android 4.3 (I have 4.4), you need to manual re-root. Consult the relevant forums for your device!" I have used root checker by joeykrim and it says "Sorry! this device does not have proper root access" (to confirm my root is busted).
My question is, is there any way to fix this without re-rooting? If I have to re-root, can I just directly re-root it again using something like Wugs rootkit?
Thank you very much in advance!
Just flash the newest version of supersu and you'll be good to go..... http://download.chainfire.eu/370/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip
go to the play store, find supersu, install/update it, open tbe app and update your binaries.

I can install/update to v1.8! I just can't open it. Gives me a "SU binary not installed" when I do!
Did you install/update from the playstore or flashed the new update?

Sorry if this is a stupid question .. but how/ do I flash this or what program do i use?
My friend helped me root it so i have no idea on how to do this @@ Very sorry.
Hmmm... from the link I posted in one of my last post, you can just use a useful app called "flashify" and flash it that way (the easiest way) but you need that file that is in the link obviously to do so haha. So afterwards when in flashify you'll get 3 simple options, boot image, recovery image, and zip file. choose zip file, go into your downloads folder from the file explorer from the app (which it should be there if you downloaded it off your phone) and let the app do the rest

Ok so I can't open flashify either. It also says I have lost root access and my superuser is busted. I have attached a screenshot!

Of course, you don't have root access, silly me lol Well guess we'll have to do it the hard way (it's not really that complicated) ok read carefully. Power off your phone, afterward hold the power and volume down buttons which should get you into the bootloader, cycle trough the options with the volume buttons and when you see recovery mode select it with the power button, now depending on which Recovery you have you'll have to choose the option that says install or install from sd card, again, depending on which one you have this will be slightly different. After doing i believe the paths will be the same, chose 0/ then look for the download/ folder which you should have that supersu.zip file, if you're using twrp recover it should be touch screen and you simply select it and swipe to install, if you're using cwm (which i do) you'' have to scroll with the volume buttons and select the file with the power button to install. I hope I was as clear as i could be, good luck
after going into recovery mode, there is just a android robot with his chest open and an exclamation mark! can't proceed after that.
Ouhhh you don't have a recovery then, do you have adb or any kind of toolkit?
I have wugs toolkit. but every time i try to do anything at all on it. It says ADB device not found? That seems to be preventing me from doing anything as well.
Do you have the adb drivers installed or/and usb debug turned on in developer settings?
how/where do i install adb drivers? I have not done so, and i doubt my friend did it when he rooted.
I do turn on usb debugging when i tried to unroot/root on wugs toolkit
In wugs toolkit it has a walk-through on how to do so, i suggest you use the RAW drivers option
I must be blind to not have seen this before. Thank you very much for your help I'll let you know how it goes!

PMID920 Root/Gapps Guide

OK I think I have a fairly foolproof method since I got root and Google Apps.
1. Download this automatic driver installer from adbdriver .com
2. Plug in the tablet via the USB cable (with debugging and unknown sources on) and open the automated installer
3. Select PMID920 and install the drivers
4. Download Kingo root
5. Then transfer an apk of root explorer, supersu, and copy the system folder of Jelly Bean 130812-13 GAPPs onto the tablet
6. Install supersu and root explorer using the built in Explorer app
7. Now go on kingo and click root again.
8. Open SuperSU and install binaries.
9. Open root explorer and allow root then go to / directory and set to R/W
10. This is where I and others got stuck. Go to sdcard and find the system folder you copied and open it
11. Use root explorer's multi-select feature to select the folder in system and copy them to your system folder
12. Reboot and it should work if it did great
13. If not you'll have to do what I did which is check the folders in system and you may notice they look like this /system/app then another app folder in there with the files
14. Manually go into all of the folders and delete any duplicate folder i.e if you open the lib folder and see another lib folder delete it and so on
15. Go to your SD card and use multi-select with select all and carefully copy all the files to the corresponding system directories then verify they all are correctly copied with none in the wrong place or missing (yes this does suck )
16. Reboot and you should be prompted to sign into google. Enjoy
Realize I am not responsible for any screwed up tablets and recommend you do this on Win 7 like I did. Also I cant post links yet.
If you get an error about insecure connection try these (not mine) View attachment usb_DRV_MODED.zip
HI, so i am working on getting this very Polaroid tablet to work with the aid of your direction and i have gotten as far as step 5. sort of.. when i use Kingo root i continuously tells me that my device is unstable. debugging mode is activated and so is the installation of from unknown sources... have i missed something? i would really love to have google play services on this tablet but this is becoming rather annoying being defied by such a tablet... please help.
Hmm if it is a driver issue due to some error in installing the drivers then go to device manager and uninstall the device and check the box. Then try to install the drivers I will add to the main post (not mine) you will have to install them without a signature. Also what os, cable, and kingo root are you using.
Lets start with saying that im pretty uber noob at this so idk what os im using. or what os is... cable is a usb micro the only cable that goes into the pmid920. as far as kingo root, i went to kingoapp.com and clicked into download, and that was it, downloaded the package and tried to use it..
Try the new drivers
An Operating System is like Windows, Macintosh, Ubuntu etc. Did you try the new drivers Just uninstall the old drivers by right clicking on the device and check the uninstall driver box. Then unplug and replug the cable then chose own drivers and go to the extracted folder I put in the main post.
ok so maybe im a little smarter than i had thought... im doing the work on the tablet with a windows 7 laptop because during the first couple steps my windows 8 laptop was not compatable. however, i have uninstalled the drivers and then put in the drivers from the zip file you linked in, however now kingo root is telling me that the connection is unstable.. what do now? also im really sorry for having to bug you about this alot. seems rather annoying
Hello! I am stuck on step 8. When I open SuperSU, it says "The SU binary need to be updated. Continue?". I hit continue.
Then it asks "If you have a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM, that can be used to (try to) install the SU binary. This is recommended for HTC devices. How would you like to install the SU binary?" Normal or TWRP/CWM. I hit Normal.
Then it says "Installation failed !" and closes the app.
I am using SuperSU version 1.69.
Please help with this part.
Thanks.
Alright for the su binary I forgot but I think you have to click unroot reboot then root it again using kingo root. As far as the unstable connection error I have read and it may be some type of bug with kingo. Remember windows 7 and try both sets of drivers.
i did try the sets of drivers. With the first set when i used kingo root it told me that the device its self was unstable, and then when i tried the 2nd set it was able to accept the device but not the conection, it would tell me that the connection was unstable, and using several different ports on the laptop (windows 7) it would still say the connection was unstable.. do you know of another good rooting tool that would allow me to use either windows 7 or 8?
Well...
I'm sorry but this is as far as my knowledge extends.
Try this http://lmgtfy.com/?q=unstable+connection+kingo+root#

I was able to get it to root and install gapps! I'm not sure exactly why it worked though. First SuperSU was updated and then I tried Kingo root again but this time I mounted the sd card on the tablet first. Then after it rebooted, I was able to get R/W access to the root folder and transfer all the new files over. After a nail-biteingly long reboot, it had me sing in to google and now I have google play and can sign in to youtube. So I am not sure it worked because of the updated SuperSU or mounting the SD card first the made the difference. But thanks all the same Beutrocks! You're awesome!:good:
system folder size limit
Has anyone gotten a problem with the amount of space allowed in root/system? Everything up until you have to copy the gapps system folder over worked for me, but when trying to copy over the gapps system folder, explorer says there is not enough room. The space available is a couple MB and obviously the gapps system folder is about 150 MB. Has anyone else had this issue, or know how to readjust the size that root/system allows? I'm new to rooting.
The GAPPs I got was 100-120

Try to make sure that folderception didn't occur; It happened to me and yes I was mad. You can check by going to /system/apps and if there is another apps folder delete it. Do this for all of the folders that copied wrong for example /system/libs/libs. Then manually recopy all of the files.
Can you clarify?

4. Download Kingo root from where and to where? On the laptop or on the tablet?
5. Transfer an apk of root explorer - from where to where
6. Install supersu... - how, where?
7. Go on Kingo - Where? Web, laptop, tablet?
8. Open Supesu - How? Where?
Please clarify exactly how this can be done for us neophytes.
Fantastic. Thanks beutrocks. Step 14 is what had me hung up. I am up and running now on my friend's tablet. Awesome!
You download then install the drivers then pmid920 should show up. If on windows 8 you must boot into unsigned driver mode.

Hey so I'm thinking about biting the bullet to finally trying to root & update this pmid920 to google play. But I guess I'm a little worried as this fellow messed his up & couldn't put stock fw back on it. http://www.FreakTab.com/showthread.php?t=11960 or if I just wanted to keep it simple should I just root & sideload apps to it? Or what do u think this fellow did wrong to totally mess it up? I just wanna keep it simple to let kids have some games on it & me to bs on it n such. Thanks in advance Ron.

Hey bud so I hope u had a great holiday & I just wanted to let u know that I did manage to root & get google play following this XDA post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588991 but I used a apk app called iroot to root device. It installed & I opened app then made one click & I was rooted. The only thing is that it installed some Chinese version of super user & in order to get the regular SuperSU app to work that I downloaded I had to unroot reboot & rwroot. Weird but it worked. But now I'm wondering since there is no development or filmware available for this thing is it possible to install twrp or cwm or even philz touch recovery on this & maybe even tweek it? Well thanks in advance & have a great day!

App does not install another app

I have installed a downloaded apk from the file manager (by enabling it from the "install unknown apps" menu). The problem is that I want to use this app that I've installed in order to install another app, but it's impossible. The installed app does not appear in the "install unknown apps" menu so I can enable it, and in its properties and permissions it only shows that it can access and modify files. It also does not pop an error message, it just doesn't do anything when i press the install button. The apk itself is not corrupted since it works perfectly on another phone and a tablet (i've also tried re-downloading and reinstalling it a couple of times), I've restarted the phone, I've hard-reset the phone... still nothing. My phone is not rooted (but then again so are the other two devices on which it works perfectly), and there is no antivirus installed. Even the device's security option from the maintainance menu is disabled. Any ideas?
Yes, each app has to be enabled to be able to install other apps. I.e. if you download APK from browser, and try to install it from file manager (i.e. ES explorer or such) it will tell you ES has no permission to install other apps... you have to enable it for each app that is going to install APKs.
Exactly. In order to install the apk I give the necessary permissions to the file manager and it successfully install the app (let's call it app1). But then I need app1 to install another app (let's call it app2) which does not happen in my s8+ (but there is no problem with my other devices which are also not rooted). The problem is that in my other devices app1 appears in the "install unknown sources" menu so it can install app2. On the s8+ app1 does not appear on this menu so there is no way I can give it permission to install app2.
I am not sure, but I vaguely remember that it asked me... I tried installing, and it popped up notification that I need to set permission so I just did... I am not sure where in settings that is

Nexus 7 2013 LTE: Unable to move app to system/priv-app

I am trying to move an app from /data/app to system/priv-app. I never encountered this issue before.
My Nexus 7 2013 LTE tablet (deb/razorg) was acting up and I had a bunch of apps on it. I figured the easiest thing to do is just wipe the thing and start fresh. So I used Nexus Root Toolkit to flash the latest version of stock OS (6.0.1 (MOB30X)) and then I rooted it using the latest Magisk (v18).
So I have root, I am able to see all the files in /. I tried using FX with mount R/W (tried mount R/W on "/", "/System" and "/system/priv-app") to copy the app folder from /data/app to /system/priv-app., however it failed.
I tried using 'App systemizer (Terminal emulator)' created by veez21 with Terminal emulator to move the app, but that didn't work either... despite App systemizer stated it was done.
I figured it could be the OS so i tried flashing it again and rerooting it again with Magisk, same issue and I tried an earlier version of the stock OS (6.0.1 (MMB30S)) same issue. Tried it again on the latest OS and this time rooted it with NRT instead of Magisk, same issue.
I clearly have root as titanium backup works fine with restoring apps.
So I think for some reason the OS is denying me write access to /system/priv-app, despite I did mount r/w.. I think I did all the steps correctly..so I am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction. .. maybe I am missing a step somewhere..

Let's try to cover the bases and go from there.
1) root checker verifies the device is rooted?
2) you have Magisk root manager installed?
3) you have the latest version of busybox installed and have granted it root permission.
4) you have gone to system settings>developer options>root access and have set root access to "apps and adb"? (you may or may not have this setting)
5) you have set mount R/W? (you have also granted your file manager/root explorer superuser/root permissions?)
6) your bootloader is unlocked? (this may or may not be necessary)
7) you have set your SELinux polcy to "permissive" mode instead of "enforcing mode? (this may or may not be necessary)
8) have you checked to see if there are any Magisk modules that you might need?
9) you said that Titanium Backup is working, Titanium Backup has a feature that converts user apps into system apps for you, have you tried this option?

2) you have Magisk root manager installed? Yes I have Magisk Manager installed, safetynet passed
3) you have the latest version of busybox installed and have granted it root permission. Yes, installed to /system/sbin
4) you have gone to system settings>developer options>root access and have set root access to "apps and adb"? (you may or may not have this setting) Not an option
5) you have set mount R/W? (you have also granted your file manager/root explorer superuser/root permissions?) Yes, FX has roots right based on Supersu and i have mounted R/W prior to pasting it into the director
6) your bootloader is unlocked? (this may or may not be necessary) It is unlocked
7) you have set your SELinux polcy to "permissive" mode instead of "enforcing mode? (this may or may not be necessary) Base on App Systemizer, SE Enabled is False, therefore I assume it is off
8) have you checked to see if there are any Magisk modules that you might need? Not that I know of, I have moved this app as system without it on my Nexus 7 before without any other modules and also have done it on my Pixel 1 phone without it
9) you said that Titanium Backup is working, Titanium Backup has a feature that converts user apps into system apps for you, have you tried this option? Yup tried it, it just hangs there, nothing happens

root storage full/add apps to super power saving mode

I want to add apps to the SPSM.
Already tried an app (don't know how it's called ~SPSM manager didn't work)
also tried apps which are supposed to move apps to /system but they didn't work, so i moved them with a root file manager - a few successful but now it doesn't work anymore
previously it said the storage is full but now it doesn't even print an error anymore
Tried a ton of root file manager no one works
any suggestions?
P.S. should i ask this this question in a other subforum?
