Hey there, I'm using a i9500 S4 running unofficial CM12.1 from frapeti.
I have a bit of a problem here. So in the developer option there was an option to update recovery with CM recovery. I checked it out of my ignorance, and now whenever I want to boot into recovery it will just go straight into normal boot. I tried using odin to reflash CWM but it won't detect my phone in download mode, despite being able to detect it in normal boot. Is there any solution to this problem?? I need to flash gApps asap.

Download any CWM or Philz recovery image for your phone.
Then install this app: Flashify (requires root)
Then install recovery img from that app by choosing the downloaded recovery image file (.img format)

I recently just rooted my phone (Nexus 6) and added custom ROM and custom back up for CM12 but when everything booted up there were no Google apps and I cannot download any apps as well bc there is no play store? How do I get Gapps on my phone without having to use a PC bc I got through this whole process without one so I need to finish it likewise and plus I do not have a computer yet.

To avoid future confusion are you on cm12.0 or cm12.1? Gapps packages are available as a zip package which you flash in recovery just like a ROM (but over the top, after ROM install ).
If you can work out the one you want without further help from me, I recommend slim gapps. Just pick the correct one you want, download on phone to storage and flash in recovery.
Ok so I am currently running cm12.1 and I have downloaded a zip file for the gapps but of course its not compatible with any of CM12.1's stock apps. So the question is how do I correctly flash in recovery and get the gapps file unzipped.
also when I try to flash it it in recovery my twrp is not loading up. It says "cyanogen Recovery" Im not sure hwats going on but what can i do excatly

Why would it not be compatible? All GApps are are things like sync and more surface level apps like YouTube. Link me the exact package you downloaded and I'll tell you if its ok. Just do a nandroid backup and flash, the worse that can happen is that it doesn't work and you have to restore.

So when i hold down the power button its gives me the option to reboot and i choose reboot then it says recovery or bootloader and i go to recovery. Instead of Twrp its just boots to "cyanogen recovery" and when im there i pressed install update because i want to install the gapps (I have the gapps zip file in my download folder) but after i press it it just says install failed and it prompts me back to recovery screen.
so i pressed reset on accident now i do not have anything on my phone expect for the cm12.1 because I checked the file manager and all my other twrp dowloads are gone as well as everything.
SO am i screwed or can i recovery from this failure.
Mind you i have a nexus 6

So you mean you have no ROM to boot into?
I'm not familiar with Cyanogen recovery... try to see if you can flash the ROM from the "install update" option.
If this succeeds, I recommend flashing TWRP as this will present far fewer issues than Cyanogen recovery.
Will I need a computer?

For which part? If you can boot into Cyanogen recovery, and you have the ROM zip file on your phone, then flash that using "install update" in recovery then boot it. If that works I'll guide you from there.
For the TWRP part, possibly. Some phones work fine just with the TWRP app.
Okay can you boot into a working ROM or not? if you can then don't worry, it's an easy fix. Alright so since you factory reset your device you'll have to go into settings and enable developer options and enable root. Once you did that download TWRP Manager and install TWRP for your Nexus 6. Now you're rid of that useless CyanogenMod recovery (only thing you can do with that is factory reset and install CM). Then redownload whatever Gapps you had tried to flash and flash them over CM12

So I downloaded the apk TWRP and it would not let me install the latest version (maybe because that was the one i installed orignally before i reset the phone) but it let me download the one right before the newest one "Twrp-2.8.7.0-shamu.img" to be excat. And prior to this i had already downloaded the slim Gapps as a zip ( i used the link that "HTCDreamOn" gave me on earlier in the thread) and they are located in my downloads folder.
Boom so i reboot the phone into recovery and finally Twrp recovery pops up instead of the cm recovery so thats good news but when i pressed install to flash the gapps they were not there in fact next to internal memeory it said "0 MB". so why is it saying i have nothing in my memory. I mean the download folder didnt even show up
Can you make a backup? What I mean is, does TWRP function otherwise or does everything say 0mb? When you go into the "mount" section is data checked?

and it keeps saying unable to mount storage
I saw an ancient Nexus S in a random drawer in my house. I figured It would be perfect for working out with since I have a Note 5 and it's a little big to carry around. I intended to use it for running only with endomodo. When I booted I noticed Cyanogen mod was installed. It booted up just fine but there was no play store. So like an idiot, I decided to just download the latest play store APK and install it. The app installed but crashed. I rebooted and now I'm stuck in a boot loop. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
You could boot to the recovery system, here you might be able to access all files, and you could try to remove the wrong apk. Alternatively just install the latest nightly version of CyanogenMod from April 2016, thus overwriting your operating system. Then install "gapps" for Kitkat (Android 4.4). There should be instructions on the CyanogenMod website or in this forum about which ones are valid. Make sure they are suitable for Android 4.4.4. You could also consider updating the recovery, if you like, before doing anything else. The latest working version is TWRP 2.8.7. Keep in mind that the device's nickname is "crespo", and do not install any binary that was built for any other device.
Perhaps it would also be sufficient to just reinstall the gapps using the recovery system. Make sure the gapps match the Android version.
So what would I do (brute force method)?
- Start device in recovery mode.
- Check recovery version. If it's not TWRP 2.8.7.0, install this one using the fastboot method, i.e. start device to bootloader, download TWRP to computer, install adb and fastboot on the computer and use the "fastboot" method to install the Recovery system (must be "twrp-2.8.7.0-crespo.img").
- Start TWRP
- Make a factory reset of the device
- Use computer to download latest CM nightly "cm-11-20160410-NIGHTLY-crespo.zip" and copy it to the device.
- Use computer to download suitable gapps package and copy it to the device
- Use TWRP to install both CM and gapps.
Hi.
I am relatively experienced user who has rooted and installed custom roms on samsung galaxy and HTC desire phones before.
I have now attempted to root my alcatel onetouch pixi 4 (4034X) using instructions from this thread :- https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/alcatel-one-touch-pixi-4-t3376597
I got as far as flashing twrp recovery and now the phone is stuck in constant reboot. I downloaded alcatels mobile upgrade tool in hopes of reflashing the stock rom but it seems to be looking for a later rom than the one I have installed and keeps telling me I have the lastest and so wont flash.
So can I recover from this at all or have I just bricked my phone? Is there a way to FORCE the mobile upgrade tool to reflash the current rom rather than looking for an upgrade?
It seems that everything except the bootloader is intact so is there another tool I can use to restore the bootloader?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Looks like I managed to unbrick using a combination of SP Flash tool and an SPFT rom for the 4034X I found on the internet. will now try reflashing a different recovery tool.
O.K. so I think what is happening is an issue when unlocking the bootloader and not when flashing recovery.
This is what I did:-
1. Enabled developer mode.
2. Turned on usb debugging and unlocked bootloader oem
3. Rebooted phone, plugged in cable and accepted connection authorisation.
4. From windows typed adb reboot bootloader. Went into to fastboot.
5. Typed fastboot oem unlock, Pressed volume up on phone.
At this point I was put back in fastboot but none of the buttons worked and the phone looked like it had frozen. Was It wiping data at this point? There was no indication that it was doing anything.
I removed the battery and reinserted but when I restarted I got the same boot loop problem. Had to restore stock firmware AGAIN.
Am I doing something wrong?
Update: I managed to install caliv touch recovery without unlocking the bootloader by using the same sp flash tool I used to restore the stock rom. However, I cant install root. The recovery will only let me sideload and I could only find the chainfire SU binaries for sideload (SuperSU 2.78-SR1 and superSU 2.46). Both of these seem to flash ok using adb sideload with ctr recovery but the phone hangs at the boot logo. I also had superuser-r197 (ph's sueruser) but that wouldn't sideload.
So I now have a custom recovery but still can't root
Has anyone succesfully rooted the 4034X (UK)? If so, how?

Hi & welcome to xda-assist,
you can try to force the installation of supersu systemless by this step, chances are good that this will make it boot properly.
boot into twrp >go to the terminal > and type:
echo SYSTEMLESS=false>>/data/.supersu
Don't know if the recovery you use has this terminal option but it's very likely.
You can do additional a Google search on "force SuperSU systemless" to get more information / background information..
Good luck

Thanks for your reply Sam.
I only read that after I had found a copy of a CM13 Rom that worked with The 4034X. I basically flashed superSU first then did a wipe, then installed the custom rom and google apps nano before downloading the supersu apk from google play and reinstalling. Now I have a rooted phone with a custom rom and am somewhat happier. The reason I wanted to root was to remove the bloatware that was taking up 1.5 GB of my already measly 2GB internal memory and this new ROM only takes up .5 GB.
I still have some pain. For example many of the Rom Toolbox Pro functions don't work and I think its because the system image seems protected and refuses to mount rw no matter what I do. Even issuing a remount command using the device name from cat /proc/mounts tells me the block device is read only. I also seem to be unable to verify if I have busybox or install it due to the same reason.
It also took me some time to work out that the boot animations weren't stored in /data/local or /system/media but to /data/system/theme.
This used to be so much easier in the days of ice cream sandwich and lollipop. Ah well!
Update:- Managed to flash busybox 1.26 using a flashable zip via adb sideload in Caliv Recovery (Caliv can't see my adopted storage for some reason).
I'm happy now! Would still like to have a rw system so I can remove some system apps I don't use but its no biggie.
Hello, So i tried to install GPS joystick privacy mode app as a system app first thru titanium backup then ..., i rebooted and now im on boot loop, what do i do?
Any help is appreciated, Thanks

Hold Power + vol up + vol down for several seconds should put you in bootloader. Or alteranately, Power+vol down for several seconds should send you to TWRP if you have it installed. From there, I'm thinking you may need to flash the stock ROM again, since you were messing with the system partition, and the phone is not booting now. Either flash stock ROM in TWRP, or use the fastboot stock ROM.
I didn't have twrp installed and i still dont, i patched the boot image with magisk and all i have is root cause i cant seem to keep TWRP installed after 9.5.3, im currently on 10.3.0

You should be able to fastboot flash stock boot.img from the fastboot ROMs to get the phone running again: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/how-to/rom-stock-fastboot-roms-oneplus-7-pro-t3931424
This will unroot the phone. But you should be able to easily root again by the method you did originally.
What is the problem you are having with installing TWRP? You haven't specifically described how you tried to install. I've had no issues using the TWRP installer zip, after multiple updates.
You need to re flash stock so, boot lastest twrp (fastboot boot twrp.img) and flash lastest stock rom.
And if you need an app as system use magisk module App Systemizer (you also need busybox module and Termux app from playstore) this is the only way (that I known) to convert user apps to system

tried that first part too, cant get into twrp and that makes sense now, i installed busy box but never opened the app to install to system/xbin
here's how ive done my part so far.. ever since i bricked my device last feb 24 , rendering it totally unresponsive.. that not even vol up & power button dont work
1. had to use msm tool just to boot my device. successfully boot my device to 9.5.3
2. device seemed to have a locked bootloader again so i un.lock it again. downloaded a patched 9.5.3 boot.img and flashed it via fastboot
3. successful root confirmed..
4. downloaded twrp 3.3.1-75 unofficial installer.. about 17.5mb. flashed it thru magisk as a module.. then install magisk ( as recommended) then reboot.
5. after a reboot.. and setting it up to my liking,, i reboot to twrp to flash the latest 10.3.1 stable rom..
6. flash twrp installer again.
7. hit reboot then choose Recovery . phone reboot to recovery again
8. flash magisk.zip which i downloaded earlier. then reboot.
done
updated to 10.3.1 with magisk & twrp intact..
btw.. i really dont know how to force my phone to reboot to twrp via PC ADB fastboot command.. easiest way for me to install TWRP is by flashing the TWRP INSTALLER as magisk module

That is because that is NOT the correct way to install TWRP img. You need to fastboot boot TWRP, then once in TWRP flash the TWRP installer zip, as I already mentioned.
This is described in the TWRP dev's thread (and you will see no mention of fastboot flash TWRP).
https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...nt/recovery-unofficial-twrp-recovery-t3931322
Also make sure you use a current version of TWRP (latest is unofficial -76) which you can get from the above link.
