Z5C not connecting in USB debug mode - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm just about to give up on trying to connect my Z5 Compact to my Windows 7 x64 development PC – I hope someone here knows something else I could try. I've searched the web for hints and information all week, and tried every suggestion I could find. I rebooted both phone and PC countless times, tried different USB ports and controllers, reset the phone to factory settings, installed and re-installed all the drivers I could find, cleaned up the Windows drivers cache, but I still cannot get my phone to connect or show up in ADB.
The connection works perfectly fine if the phone is not in USB debug mode. It shows up in Windows Device Manager as "Xperia Z5 Compact", I can browse the file system from Windows Explorer, etc. However, as soon as I switch on USB Debugging, Device Manager shows the phone as a non-working device "E5823". All the drivers that are supposed to work with this device refuse to install. I tried the drivers that come with Sony PC Companion, the Z5 Compact drivers downloaded directly from Sony Developer World (version from November 13th), as well as the generic Google Composite ADB drivers that come with the Android SDK, which other owners of the Z5 report should also work. For all of these drivers, Windows tells me that they're not compatible with the E5823 device in question. I can force-install any of these drivers against Windows' warnings by selecting them manually, after which the device will show up as working properly in Device Manager, but I still can't do anything with it – it won't show up as a device on ADB, nor do I ever get the key authorisation on the phone that usually shows up when connecting in debug mode. On the same system, I can deploy to other Android devices fine, including an Xperia Tablet Z and a Z1 Compact (I removed those drivers to make sure that they're not the problem).
I'm on Windows 7 Enterprise x64 SP-1 and my Z5C is on stock firmware 32.0.A.6.152.
I'm at a loss at what to try next and would be grateful for any help. Thanks!

In case anyone else is still looking for a solution, this worked for me:
Download the device drivers from here http://developer.sonymobile.com/downloads/drivers/
Open the device manager, check whether your device name (e.g. C6903) is listed under "Other devices". If so, right click on it and select "update drivers", and use the ones you just downloaded. Done!
The problem is that the device connects as two separate devices when usb debugging is enabled on the phone, and windows didn't recognize the "debugging device". So I had to install the appropriate drivers manually.

Thank you for the reply! Unfortunately, this one doesn't work for me…
I'm not sure about the phone showing up as two devices, the only one I see appearing in USB debugging mode is the E5823 one. When trying to update its drivers, Windows reports that it can find no compatible drivers in the folder extracted from the driver download on the Sony website. The same is true for the drivers folder of PC Companion and the Android SDK USB driver folder.
If I force Windows to install the drivers from the Sony website (showing up as "Sony sa0113 ADB Interface Driver", the warning will go away and the device properties say it's functioning correctly. However, still nothing works; no device shows up in ADB and I get no key acception prompt on the phone.

Very strange. I hadn't tried this myself with my Z5 but I just did now with no problem. Driver from Sony Dev site (Android SDK driver didn't work for me).

Did you try enabling non-secure ADB via *#*#2673#*#*
Dunno what else might be causing this. Doesn't sound like your phone is encrypted - not that that would explain it either.
Sorry, I'm just a n00b at this.
Oh yeah, one last thing. Can you try on another PC? Maybe yours is messed up a little...

Well, this turns out to be the problem! Thank you a lot for your suggestions.
I took to another PC to try the same thing, and the phone works fine using the Sony drivers. It shows up exactly as in your screenshot, under the "Sony sa0113" device category, got the key authorisation prompt and it immediately showed up in ADB.
I'm not sure where the problem with this first PC and USB is. It seems to be a software problem somewhere deep in the dungeons of Windows. The computer has two USB controllers with 4 ports each – I tried all of them, and several cables, which all work with other devices, but this phone simply won't register (and again, it's only in USB debugging mode that I have the problem, regular syncing and MTP file transfer work fine). So I would still be very appreciative of any hints, if anyone has ideas on what else I could try to fix it…

I'd definitely try properly removing possible conflicting drivers from your PC, like old Sony ones for a start. I use DriverStore Explorer [RAPR] to clear old drivers out.
Removing/uninstalling from Device Manager does not delete the files from Windows so if your Sony drivers are misconfigured somehow, they'll stay that way next time you reconnect your phone and Windows reinstalls them.

That's good to know. I was about to try the DriverStore Explorer, unfortunately I decided to go with another suggestion from someone at the office first, which was to reinstall the USB controller drivers.
He told me to remove the controllers from the device manager and reboot, at which point Windows would automatically reinstall them. Unfortunately, that didn't work, so instead of the USB controllers I now have to completely "unknown devices" which won't install at all. Windows doesn't find any drivers online or locally, and even the chipset and USB drivers that came with my mainboard don't work. So at the moment, not even my mouse and keyboard work anymore, and the only way I can currently control and try to fix anything at all anymore is by using TeamViewer on my phone as a keyboard and mouse replacement
It's probably safe to say that my mainboard is completely kaput at this point, and that this was most likely also the reason for the phone not working. I spent the entire afternoon today trying everything to get some USB functionality working again, without success. I don't think I have any other option than to replace the entire board now…

Yikes, that's a nasty tale! You should try a Windows repair install before scrapping the PC though. What have you got to lose?!

It's really just rather comical at this point. I figured out that I could at least get the mouse to work again by enabling USB Legacy mode in BIOS. The keyboard would still only work for the first few seconds on the Windows login screen though, and then just silently sign off. And the on-screen keyboard doesn't allow me to send the Ctrl+Alt+Del required to log in. All that doesn't really matter anymore now either though, because somehow after one of the last reboots my computer got kicked out of our network domain. Now it will only let me log in with a local administrator account anymore, to which I don't know the password. Every time I think it couldn't possibly get any worse... :silly:
At this point I don't think I can try anything anymore until I can get in touch with one of the guys administering the domain on Monday, because I can't even get close to accessing system restore from here. I'll actually just remove the hard drive and take it home with me, so I can at least access my files and work on my other computer...

Windows 7/ BSOD when tablet is plugged in

So I got my tablet, and read through all the directions to instal CWM, market fix, flash, new ROM etc... But the problem I have is when in one of those steps the process was to mount usb so I could transfer files to the internal memory. I plugged the tab in unmounted and it worked fine. I mounted usb, plugged in the tab and got an immediate windows BSOD and had to force it to shutdown.
I manually moved files around, got a new ROM flashed and the tablet works fine. When I plug it in to my laptop under any configuration I get an immediate BSOD and have to force the laptop to shut down. No change on the tablet, it continues to work just fine.
My question now, is there a reason for this death of my laptop? Is it because it is 64bit? my Comp specs are: Dell XPS, Win7 Ultimate 64 bit, Core [email protected] Ghz, 6Gb RAM. The USB ports are 3.0, but I haven't had any problems with any legacy USB 2.0 devices yet.
I am new to Android, but I have been on this board for years. I am a little stumped here... Any help appreciated. I will continue my search and come back with any answers. Thanks.

Firstly, if you're in CWM, then you're supposed to plug the USB cable in first. Then mount the USB. It should then pop up on your PC screen allowing you to access it as a storage device. Then you unmount it in CWM, then you can unplug the cable after that.
You could have a bad or outdated USB (chipset) driver and/or your laptop's BIOS may need to be updated. Go to your laptop manufacturers website and download and re-install the chipset drivers and check to see if there is an updated BIOS.
BEWARE of flashing the BIOS. It could brick your laptop, just as you can brick your Android device by flashing it as well.

I have spent the last few hours digging around on google trying to find a common solution, and it seems for us 64bit users it appears to need a new driver. I will find it and post the results. Thanks to all.
My laptop is less than three months old and I have been to Dell's downloads and drivers page and updated all available items, even the BIOS within the last month. Nothing new when I checked.

BSOD is caused by a driver most of the time. Try to remove other peripherals before mounting usb storage to see if you have a conflict with an other driver.
What does does the blue screen say? IRQ LESS OR EQUAL?

I do not get that error, the top line says "system_services_shutdown" or something to that effect. Half of the times it freezes the hard drive starts humming something fierce and I am afraid of damaging something. After I flashed Vegantab on it it BSOD's everytime I plug it in, mounted or not.
Probably a shot int he dark here but, at first I had no issues with connecting to W7 64bit at all. Connected the first time and was recognized without issue. 1 issue I did come across was, that sometimes I DID get a BSOD and then an immediate shut down on my workstation. After doing research on the matter, I found a solution that worked for me.
The cables that are supplied with aftermaket devices are not properly shielded. And beings that the device is a TOUCH device it does build up a static charge. Verified that by zapping my 5 year old on the nose after playing on the Tab. figured out that connecting my Gtag was cause a static charge shutdown of my system.
My solution to the problem was to discharge any static by touching my PC case before connecting my USB cable to either device.
Haven't had a BSOD or shut down since then.
Just a thought.
Well, I dont think its a static charge erroring windows out, and I have had no luck updating drivers. I can't even plug it in without getting a BSOD. I plugged it in with it sleeping and that was fine, until the device woke up and it instantly BSOD'd again. I will keep looking for solutions, thanks for everybodies input.
We need to know the information on the blue screen. At the very top, left, it will have the error message. At the very bottom, it will have the error code something like "0x0000001e".
Write down (or take a big-sized picture) of the BSOD so we can get the information off of it and help you further.

Will this happen with any USB device or just the tablet?
Just the tablet. Every other device pugs and plays just fine. Driver update did not help. Still looking for a cause and solution. I am thinking it is my laptop, but I will figure it out.
I just picked up an HTC incredible from my sister, plugged it in and it acts as a usb drive, HTC sync and Verizon modem all just fine, self installing all necessary drivers. The tablet still BSOD's my laptop every time and updating the drivers has not helped. I am thinking it must be a hardware issue with the USB3.0 board in my laptop. I'm at a loss for solutions here.

[Q] Problem

I have utilized not only Google, but the XDA search function for my problem. Even though some post and website go into fixing it, it seems as if no one has had my problem. So here it is:
I was installing the Infuse ROM (updating from previous version). Battery was fully charged, and everything seemed to go fine until it restarted, and was in a loop. All that would happen would be Samsung popping up, then off, then back up, etc.
So I have seen GTG's way to fix this. You must put the Infuse into download mode. Well, I pull the battery, hold down the volume up and down keys, put the battery back in, connect my USB cable, and now my phone is in a loop saying it is charging (the battery screen that pops on when you plug your phone into a charger while off).
I have tried any solution that I have seen, but there is no way this phone is getting to the download screen to fix the looping problem.
If I have mistakenly looked over the correct solution, please PM me the link and delete this thread, as to not spam your forum.
I do hope someone has a solution, as I miss my Infuse!
Nah, getting into Download mode gets kinda moody sometimes. Just keep trying. It'll work. What I usually do is pop the battery in FIRST then press Vol UP+DOWN then plug in the USB cable then the screen pops on in Download mode.

Whenever I plug my device into my computer, Windows pops up saying device has a problem and cannot get drivers. I have downloaded drivers, reinstall drivers, uninstalled drivers, over and over again; used a different computer, and all. Same problem.
Of course it is probably because of the looping.
You should consider getting a USB jig. If you are having trouble getting into download mode, it might do the trick. But it also might not, and you will be out xx$. Its worth a try
Does anyone else have another solution that could work as I wait for a jig?

keep holding all 3.you will c first battery symbol screen will go blank new battery symbol now when screen goes blank again in second loop keep holdin vol up/vol down but let go of power. thats it yellow target download mode. hope it works

When I try your way James, it has the loading screen, reboots and keeps doing that, with no battery until I realease power buttom, then it just loobs the battery.
Anyone have any other input on this? Computer still says device is defective and it won't go into download mode. I'm ordering the jig.

I had my phone looping on the Samsung screen the other day. Have you tried turning it off and booting into CWM? I can't remember if it has the option or not, but I think it has something about booting into download mode. I'll go check and come post again if I find it or not.
Yeah. Under "Advanced" is the option to boot into download mode. Try pulling the battery, putting it back in and holding the volume buttons and the power button. Or try holding the buttons prior to reinstalling the battery if the phone automatically starts to boot. You should be able to get into CWM. From there you can either do the download mode thing or try to reflash or restore a backup.

I have never had any problem by: plug my battery in, then: hold both of the volume buttons (up and down) at the same time and while your holding them, plug in the cord. It pops right up.
It's a different order then what you posted:

I have literally tried every combination, and all it does is loop through Samsung or when plugged in USB loop through the loading circle (if power is held down, or if not loop through the battery image).
I've installed and reinstalled Samsung drivers, because I think the main problem beside the looping is when I do plug in the USB Windows tells me the device has malfunctioned.
I don't know what to do guys, thanks to all who has tried to help so far.

Try downloading PDANET on your computer and running it. Then connect your device and put into download. It has the drivers and usually is not as finicky as others....
Your sequence is out of order and you cannot get into download that way.
Connect USB
hold both vol keys
insert battery
Download mode
If you have the Android SDK installed you can also simply "adb reboot download"
try a different cable, try a different Port.
the drivers wont matter if you cant get it into download mode first.
i had this issue where the three button did not work, plugging the cable in with buttons held only yeilded a Battery chaging sysmble. i moved my cable to the back and BOOM it put my phon into download mode.
everyones experiance is differnt, hope this helps.

You may need to remove the old driver. Maybe it is corrupt?
Go to device manager (if using windows) then connect the phone. When the list refreshes find the phone and delete it off the list.
Install PDANET on the computer then plugh your phone in to verify that PDANET sees your phone.
I tried it again SN, and it still didn't work. PDANet does not recognize an android device plugged in, and device manager shows it as an unkown device, and even when I update the driver Windows tells me the driver is up to date (but there is no driver associated with an unkown device).
This is so depressing guys.

You need to delete the device altogether in device manager (right click, delete). Restart your computer, install PDANET then plug your phone in. Updating drivers (in my experience) will not work on a win7 machine once they are installed with android phones....
If need be use another computer but do not plug the phone in until after wuo install PDANET or the drivers from another source.

[Q] Computer won't recognize my Atrix 2 through USB

So I just got an used Atrix 2 off of eBay today. Seems like it went through factory reset by the previous owner, the phone came with the standard 2.3.6 with MotoBlur and everything, ver. 55.13.25.MB865.
Anyway, as you might've guessed, when I plug it into my computer through USB port, the computer says that it cannot recognize this device. I installed the Motorola device manager app from the website, to no avail. Tried adding MotoCast later, but no result, either. Am I to understand that these two applications also install the drivers for the Atrix 2?
Anyway, I'm dying to root my A2 (I used to be a flash junkie with my old Samsung Captivate :silly, but there's no way to connect it to my laptop..
I'm all ears if anyone have some advice for me Thanks.
No those applications do nothing for your phone, other than advertise for motorola.

These are the drivers for your phone. however, it should recognize it without them also.

Hiya. I already had the Device manager in your link in the first place, though, but it still doesn't recognize the phone. I'm using a laptop. Tried it with another laptop as well, but it still shows the "Device not recognized" error. By the way, is there something like a MotorolaDeviceManager.exe kinda program that should run after installing it? Because there is none that I can find.
Oh, and one more detail. Sometimes when I plug the phone into the USB port, the phone acknowledges the port as "Common Charging", just like a wall outlet, instead of a computer.
Do you have usb debugging enabled? And allow unknown sources?
Also, use "charge only" mode usb connection in gingerbread (they removed that option in ics - found out last night trying to system dump my buddy's razr - camera mode worked though, fyi..)

Yup, I've tried with both USB debugging on and off. The same goes with all options in the Application menu.
The thing is, when I plug the phone in, it sees the computer as a "Common charging" aka wall outlet, thus no USB connection menu is available through the notification. I don't have the option to change charge-only or mass storage (which I'm trying to achieve).

Do you think.. it could be a hardware problem? I mean it charges and everything, but just no data transfer.. All this confusion is making me fear for the worst..
I'm on PC, by the way. Windows 7.

i was trying to sync my phone to the pc at work, it would not connect. MTP fail was the error code. i had to disable the USB Debugging in order for it to automatically install the drivers for my phone.

Hi guys. Thanks for trying to help me out. I just solved the problem by the most primitive way..
Plugging, unplugging, and plugging in the phone over and over again. I know how silly it sounds, but it works, around once every 10 times, if I do it successively.
Now my Atrix 2 is happily rooted and loaded with Lithium v 1.3.1.

If you keep having problems, you should unplug your phone, uninstall all moto drivers and reboot. Reinstall moto drivers and reboot again. Finally plug in your phone, everything should be newly detected and good to go.
Also, it's always much better to use OEM cables and the most powerful USB ports on the computer. Since it's from eBay then you probably don't have an OEM cable, but just make sure that you're using one that's high quality.

agreed, no stupid drivers with ubuntu. I have been working all in linux for a few months now, it was painful when I wen't back for a day
Hi, I had the same problem and i resolve it simply.
I looked in Settings / Storage / Options / USB computer connection
and nothing was ticked. I ticked MTP and it worked

Mine is new and computer still wont recognise it - have installed drivers and reinstalled 2x plugged and unplugged cable till I've got OOS and nothing - I'm just trying to transfer photos from phone to laptop - can't help thinking that shouldn't be this difficult - why provide a cable if it aint gonna do anything? New phone and new computer and installed drivers etc etc. Go figure.

Have you tried installing Motohelper drivers, for me they tend to work with my A2.

Hmmm, I'm not sure then. It could be hardware related like the USB cable, the USB slot on your phone or your computer. Try another Motorola cable if available or another computer, yet if you've already tried all of that then I'm not sure what the problem is. :/

S7 always asks for permission to allow data/MTP when connected to PC

My dad and I both got new Samsung Galaxy S7's (Sprint) over the weekend. Every time he plugs his phone into his computer, it always brings up the prompt "Allow access to device data - An MTP connection will be established to access the data on the connected device."
If he presses "Allow," it does NOT remember and asks him each and every time it is plugged in.
However, when I connected my S7 to my PC for the first time, I only had to press "Allow" once and it never asked me again after that.
It's a minor annoyance for him, but an annoyance nonetheless.
Things we've tried:
Rebooted Phone
Re-installed the official Samsung S7 drivers on his computer (straight from their website)
Enabled developer options on his phone and turning USB debugging on
Tried several different USB cables
Tried several different USB ports on his computer
I am no Android/S7 expert so I thought I would ask here. Is anyone familiar with this issue and know of any fixes? Hell, I'll even take wild shots in the dark at this point. Thanks in advance!
It does the same for me. Guess this is done intentionally by Samsung.

Same here, super annoying.
I was happy that the S7 no longer had port flaps, so it got rid of the stupid message to close the port flaps that was displayed EVERY SINGLE TIME you unplugged the USB cable from it.
But now we have the MTP confirmation without adding known hosts to a whitelist.

It always ask me to install MTP driver (I installed Samsung drivers before), but when I try to do that, it said it is already installed. Recent Windows 10 update made this mess, because on my laptop, I didn't update Windows 10 for a long time, probably since January or so and S7 is connecting without any problem. Grrrr ...

Same problem for me with Galaxy S5. I have one computer with windows 10 and another with windows 7. It connects to windows 7 no problem but won't connect to windows 10

That's odd. I just had an S5 plugged into my laptop yesterday to access the internal storage and flash via odin. And I had my S7 plugged in as well for some file transfers. My laptop has had Windows 10 since the first day it was rolled out and downloaded automatically overnight. It has also been connected to the internet and had all updates installed automatically...
I received the message everytime I connect via usb to my pc. Recently I accidentally hit DENY at the prompt and now I can not access the files on my phone any longer. NOPE, I do not get the prompt any longer either to just be able to say allow!! WTH, I've been searching, no luck. I've found the USB debugging is on and the USB configuration is MTP, any other suggestions. All I did was hit the Deny, you think it would prompt again when I plugged in.
Enable Dev Option and tick usb debugging this worked for me !
I think it serves as a good security feauture
Imagine if you enable it premanently, someone could take your phone and plugin to another pc without unlocking and extract your personal data...

Nice tip. At least it works for me in the way that now only ask for permission once. Befere, just two times...last week, 7 or 8 times every time I plugged in!
I think that it was because of the Android Studio Adb driver, but no.
In windows 10, only asked the very first time and never more...in windows 7, as I mention before.

The security for that is the lock screen...no phone contents are shown if the screen is locked, but Android 6 added this another "allow/deny" method that is buggy by now.

You have to unlock the screen before plugging in the USB cable, then he won't ask permission again. They changed this behavior in some of the recent OS updates, because I remember that I could access files without unlocking first (just allow once for that PC). The only real solution for this is root, as always...
On Windows, it works fine. The ALLOW is remembered. But, on Linux, i have this popup EVERY TIME i plug in to PC... so annoying

I had the same problem for months, it was really irritating, but then I updated the driver in device manager and solved the problem

Switch off annoying MTP access popup
Finally found it in settings. Switch on Developers options in configuratien. Then there is a USB modus setting. Set it to Charging rather then MTP Transfer.

Question Pixel 7 Pro USB connection to MS Windows File Explorer

I can't seem to get my Pixel 7 Pro to communicate via USB to Windows 10 x64 File Explorer. Under no circumstances does Windows File Explorer recognize the Pixel. Have gone through all the driver and change cable steps. My prior LG V35, Samsung Note 10 5G, and older Nexus 6P connect to my computer. Not the new Pixel Pro 7. PTP mode also doesn't work either. Have tried different ports and cables. Do see that Pixel is charging and do hear the PC da-ding when I plug it in via the USB and when I change the drop down mode to file transfer, but the Pixel does not show up in Windows File Explorer, yet I can see the V35, Note 10, and Nexus. Finally, went into settings and permanently set USB mode to file transfer so I didn't have to change it every time I connected the Pixel.
I also loaded, then unistalled, then reinstalled the latest Google ADB Windows drivers and set Pixel USB debugging to on. But no go. Do see that ADB does show up in Windows Device Manager.
Thought this issue was a thing of the distant Nexus 6P past, but, I've run into this again (on a newer different PC, too).l and remember what a pain that was to get to work. Frustrating, as I just wanted to copy some music files from my PC to the Pixel (yes, I know I can use Google One Drive).
It should not be this hard. Anyone run into this? Any ideas?

Yes, thank you. I had found that thread and tried it. Did not work. Can try it again, maybe clean other drivers ahead of the retry (do prefer not to uninstall the LG and Samsung drivers, but maybe they are creating conflicts; however, the Nexus works with the new Google Drivers). I did leave the PC with latest Google drivers installed.

it had a great idea of doing the little known & thought-of "show hidden devices" option -- it is explained in more detail by him in the post. You might find some of the issue there.
Also, I think there's a better way to make sure you are using a particular driver vs. whatever generic one Windows looks for; I talked about it in below's quote
(make sure you have google's windows usb drivers downloaded & extracted so you know where to find the .inf file to point to and use; OFFICIAL most up-to-date google windows usb drivers can be found HERE )

Also, make sure you set your internet connection to private not public because if it's public, sometimes Windows might not download the required drivers.
Go to Settings > Network & Internet > WiFi or Ethernet, then click on the connection and change it to Private then go to Windows updates and perform all the updates including optional ones which might be drivers
Okay, have been working on this for hours.
-Do see all my phones in Device Manager via ADB phone:
(Android ADB Interface and/or Android Composite ADB Interface).
-Correct myself in that neither the Nexus 6P nor the Pixel show up in Windows File Explorer.
-Did remove LG, Samsung, Fastboot entries.
-Did still hear the Winders sound when I change USB modes or turn on ADB.
-Did install the Version 11 Android USB Drivers. Later I updated to V13.
-Did remove then read Windows USB drivers via Android Studio.
-Did go into Device Manager, showed hidden USB and Android and removed grayed out USB entries. Reconnected phone.. ADN entries showed up but moved a bit in Device Manager Categories (LeMobile and Android).
-Keep checking that File Transfer MTP is set. Fiddle with ADB on/off.
-File Explorer still quiet as far as Google Android Phone or Pixel, but, LG and Samsung show up (despite that I uninstalled their drivers - I assume windows added support at some point).
you should have just downloaded the .zip file that had the usb drivers here (https://dl.google.com/android/repository/usb_driver_r13-windows.zip).
At any point did you directly point and an .inf file to load the driver? just because you uninstall drivers doesn't mean that when you reconnect the phone/device, windows will point the the new or correct driver; usually windows keeps a memory or repository of drivers of a specific version to refer to -- so if that driver isn't doing the proper handshaking to your phone/device, no matter how many times you uninstall the driver, windows will keep referring to the same driver that doesn't work when you reconnect. You have to specifically "update driver" and point it to the folder, or better yet specifically the .inf file, to change windows pointing to the correct and/or newer driver.

To confirm: when you are connected to the computer, do you get an item in your notification shade (it could be silent/at the bottom) that lets you choose USB mode, and you can select MTP mode there? I assume yes due to:

If that works, you can also go to Developer Settings and choose the default USB mode, if you prefer it to always default to MTP mode.

I know this sounds silly and you've probably already tried it, but while connected, try changing to a different USB selection on the phone, and then back to MTP. Does PTP mode work? I'm guessing not, but worth finding out.

I will search pc to see if I can locate a USB 2.0 port and proper cable . I have been using usbc to usbc.
Funny enough, I'm having the same issue as of 15 mins ago, after connecting it fine previously.
Not silly. Yes I have been back and forth trying the different USB connectivity modes. One of the first things I did. The pc recognizes the change (I get the USB connect/disconnect sound), but the Pixel doesn't show up in Explorer Only ADB seems to connect properly. Really, I am just trying to enable USB file transfer without having to resort to the slower cloud. Of course with Nexus and Pixel I can't use an SD card to move the files either.
Get VMware Player, install Windows 10 inside of it, and use the Shared Folders function in settings to share your MP3 folder.
Your other option is to try Linux, which tends to handle Android phones quite well out of the box, or reinstall Windows...
EDIT: I just tried it and like every other Android phone I've ever had, I didn't have to install a driver to get it to pop up in Windows after putting it on file transfer mode so something is broken on your Windows installation.

I'm having the exact same issue after transferring all my stuff over 30 mins ago now on the same computer. Have tried an osx laptop and a standard one now with the same results.

I mean it's certainly possible it's a bug, wouldn't be the first bug that ever affected USB file transfers, it just seems odd to only have two reports with how popular this device is proving to be (I have never before seen a poll show over 60 people having a device on this site within 2 days of its release day before).

you may not be doing the steps/directions I outlined because you wouldn't get the message "You already have the latest driver installed." You should get a "Windows has successfully updated your drivers" & "The hardware you installed will not work until you restart your computer" -- I attached the picture to show you.

That was my whole point, that by doing it in such the way that you are doing, you will be getting the driver that Windows merely defaults to, not necessarily the updated, proper, and specific/particular driver that actual Google intends for you to use for this purpose which is a specific/particular mode (i.e. some drivers have different modes like "MTP device", "ADB Device", "ADB Interface", etc). that you have to change & specify & intentionally select than Windows choosing for you.

I'm certain it has to do with the multiple other devices he has installed drivers for. I will also quote the great @roirraW "edor" ehT's guide on the subject on his quintessential guide's Post #2, "Unlocking the Bootloader" section, step 10:

The "updating that driver to Google's driver" is specifically what I'm trying to directly do; not merely letting Windows choose whatever default driver (probably one set up for another device) for itself....
