Gear S2 plus Samsung phone vs S2 plus other Android phone - Samsung Gear S2

I have my S2 paired with a Nexus 5X. Very happy with the device (and the N5X) but I am curious as to whether there is any functionality I lose by not pairing with an S6 or other Samsung phone. I have searched on the web and asked the Samsung support line this question and neither have been helpful. Does anyone here have insight?

Won't get Samsung Pay in the future.
I think Galaxy owners have the option to purchase paid apps on the gear app store right now, non Galaxy user only can get the free ones.
I also believe Galaxy owners have access to an email and messenger app on their Gear.

Also can't get milk music

...Is there a way, if i buy an app from a Samsung device (login with Samsung account, pay for it, download to the GEAR S2), and i want to use it with an other mobile device (HTC M9)?

Has anyone tried to pair this with a Moto X Pure Edition?

I'm now getting the option to buy apps on my Nexus 6 for my s2.

Yup, paid apps are now on non samsung phones!

Trying to buy paid apps on my non Samsung phone and nothing happens. When I click the purchase button a blue spinner shows and just sits. Then it eventually just says connection time out. I can download free apps without issue.
Using a Mi4c.

Did you set up a card in the store yet? Go to the drop down right when you enter the store and select "credit card." See if that clears up the issue for you.

There is not an option for Credit Card in the drop down.
Only:
Samsung Gear Apps
Announcements
Settings
Help
And in settings there is not option either.

I had to reboot my watch to get any apps - paid or unpaid - to install.

As far as I know, you also cannot answer the phone using a non-Samsung phone from the S2. Only option is to decline or send a default message. Non-3G watch. Would be nice to accept and answer the phone call with the watch, as I'm trying to get my phone out.

If I remember well, the answer call button only appeared on my watch when I got a bluetooth headset paired with phone.

PayPal has been released

One of the first apps to be announced has been finally released:
http://www.tizenexperts.com/2014/07/paypal-tizen-samsung-gear-2-released/
It doesn't appear in my Store, I'm in Argentina.
I loaded it. I don't find it particularly useful, since it requires sign-in on the phone anyway or staying permanently logged onto PayPal, which I do not like.
Sent telepathically to my Galaxy S4
It's not showing in the Samsung Apps for me either and I'm in Texas. However I haven't been able to see quite a few apps mentioned here either like Gear Navigator, etc. Is the App Store region/carrier/device specific? I'm using it with my Gear 2 on a Galaxy K Zoom.

Samsung Pay on the Gear S2

Many of you probably don't watch Korean dramas but they tend to have LOTS of product placements in them. Here's a recent one with Samsung Pay being used on the Gear S2. Looks like it'll pay through NFC.
That's funny. you know which drama? My wife watches them but I just find them silly. They always got the product placements but they have to cover the brand name. So it will be so obvious everyone is using Galaxy Edges but they got to put tape on everyone's phones covering up the name Samsung.

Speaking of Gear S2 and Samsung PAY. I'm I correct in thinking this will only work with NFC readers? Here in Los Angeles California area 95% of the places don't have NFC card reader or most of them are disabled by the vender to not accept NFC. I have been using Samsung PAY beta here for several weeks and I like it but wondering if the watch will have a limited Samsung pay only to be used with NFC vs. also having MST antenna in it.

S2 needs to be paired to a Galaxy phone and used on an NFC terminal for Samsung Pay to work. The tech that uses the magnetic strip terminals is too big for a watch.

Yeah was afraid of that. Looks like I'll continue to use my phone for Samsung pay rather then watch. I'm going to guess that its 5% or less that I have even used NFC vs. MST. It's just not an option around here.

The drama is called Yong Pal. The Gear S2 first shows up in episode 14
LOL all the of Samsung phones(S6, S6E/E+, Note5) in the drama have the logo on the front covered up. It was also very funny how everyone was using the S6 and S6E in the first 10ish episodes then suddenly they ALL have a Note 5.
Does anyone know how to get Samsung Pay to work on the Gear S2? I have had the beta for weeks and use it every day on my phone but I can't figure out how to get it on my watch. I frequent many stores that use NFC for payment. When I touch the watch on the terminal it beeps but doesn't do anything. I have no way of selecting a card.

I believe Samsung Pay will be listed there, if installed. I can't confirm due to having my S6 Edge with Verizon.

Does that mean your phone has to have a working Samsung Pay (as in not rooted) for Pay on work on the Gear S2?

Sad to say but yes... There isn't a way to set up Samsung Pay on the watch itself
I have the full Samsung Pay app installed on my Note 5, yet when I go to tap & pay, it says no app installed. I'm guessing that means I have to install the app from the Gear App store, which does not seem to have that app..... Anyone else get their tap & pay set up on their watch?
No luck for me either... I guess we'll have to wait a bit more....
I saw a few reviews that stated it will be a separate app made specifically for the Gear S2 and will come in November. So it looks like now we wait.

Anyone got this working?
I unable to get mine working too, its saying app isn't installed but i do have the Samsung pay installed and working on the phone with no issues and searching the Gear S2 apps store - there is no any payment app. currently to install.
Its not available till first quarter next year per Samsungs twitter page. Which sucks!
I hope they've miniaturized the looppay device so it can be used in the Gear S2.

1000 Gear S2 apps

I wondered if anyone knows what happened to the 1000 apps which should be available at launch as stated on CNBC ?
The store which you can access via the Samsung Gear app only has around 25 apps as far as I can see.
Thanks in advance
A year ago I had the gear 2 neo, the gear s2 has less apps than the neo, don't get your hopes up, they did the same with the neo,the apps are coming, never came, this time I expect the same

That's too bad... The SDK, documentation and support is really bad in comparison to others so I didn't expect wonders anyway. But without the intention to harm anyone; 90% of the apps currently available (excluding the watch designs) are very bad
It seems like a good opportunity for app developers to make money. If you develop a good app it's going to get exposure very fast and I think there are enough users to make it profitable.
At this point in time though I can't imagine wanting anything else to use on a smartwatch, I basically just use the step coounter, clock, messaging and dismiss incoming notifications.
The Voxer app are already available for the S2?
Can someone post screenshots of the Samsung Galaxy store? I don't have a device yet, I just want to know which apps are available and the current state of the store. Thanks
I have the gear s and waiting for the magic apps lol they still haven't come u

Is the voxer app much use given the lack of microphone on the wifi model?
There appears to be an open question regarding the Endomondo app coming to the Gear S2... Let see if that comes to pass
I have to admit I'm disappointed with the amount of apps available
Good thing I didn't get the watch for apps. Saved myself disappointment. I never really believed Samsung with their outlandish claims of 1000 apps on launch. Maybe there are 1000 apps out there, but most of them are just fugly watch faces.
Ironic after selling my Gear 2 in anticipation of the s2 and the once again loads of apps that never materialise I decided to look into Android Wear and realised their app selection is just app bad.

Want to get the S3 have some questions

I want to get the Gear S3 Frontier. I have a Honor 8 phone. I use Google Messenger and Google Allo. Do both of these apps work with the Gear S3, can I send and receive text messages etc. I don't want to use the stock Samsung app.

You get notifications(with the content like you have in the Android status bar) , but you can not reply from the watch

It is for android wear watches so doesn't do much for gear, it only enables replying to the messages even if you are not using samsung's message app. You can just use SMSGear instead of doing this actually. https://forum.xda-developers.com/gear-s3/themes/opensource-sms-application-gear-s3-t3557263
Ahh only sms... I thought whatsapp etc also...

I will probably skip the Samsung watch and grab a wear watch instead like the Lg Style. After some reading Samsung watches are great if you have a Samsung phone, but if you do not then it's hit or miss with most apps and some don't work at all. And of course the apps I use are the ones that apparently don't work at all with Samsung. Shame really because I think the Samsung watch looks almost like the $1000 Tag Heuer smart watch. If they would have only used wear software instead of there own.

(I'm not sure where you're at but) Check Best Buy. The Samsung Rep told me you can return the S3 within a 15-day period after buying. I asked the rep at a Best Buy (at a location with a Samsung gallery -- not all locations have) to take the S3 out of Store Demo Mode so I can pair it with my old Galaxy Note 2 but he said he can't. He mentioned I can buy and return it within 15 days if I'm not happy with it. If you're going to do this, see if you can involve a manager. Sometimes reps just say whatever they want to make a sale. But who knows. He could be telling the truth.

Best buy's return policy is 15 days unless otherwise stated. The only reason I know that is they will price match anything you buy within the return period as well. I had bought a TV and on the 15th day it dropped by about $500. Called them up and they refunded that amount. The info on price matching and return policy can be found easily on their website.
So I checked out the S3 at T-Mobile store. Never mind its way to big and heavy. Also it didn't work with half the stuff I wanted to do on my Pixel. I think this watch is great if you have a Samsung phone, but if it's a non Samsung phone then expect half the stuff not to work right. I think I will pick up the new LG Sport watch instead...

If you're concerned about sizes, I think the LG Sport Watch is bigger but along with its size, you get more screen and a higher resolution. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough room to improve on battery life for the LG even for its bigger size. I'm on the morning of Day 3 and I still have 62% battery power (granted I turn it off after 9pm and turn it back on at 6am). Lots of trade-offs. But I agree. You get a better experience with the Gear S3 if you have a Galaxy phone. Have you seen this article? http://www.androidcentral.com/lg-watch-sport-vs-samsung-gear-s3
EDIT: One of the best things I love about the S3 is Samsung Pay (way better than Android Pay). Never again do I pull my wallet out (except when I occasionally buy wine -- I still get carded LOL!)

That hasn't been my experience at all. I have a Moto G4 and my wife has a Huawei phone and the S3 works very well with either. I've paired it separately with both plus an older Moto E I and everything works without a hitch. I know there have been some hitches with the IPhone but I wouldn't touch one of those if my life depended on it so I can't comment there.
There isn't a huge difference in the S3 user experience with a Samsung phone versus other branded Android phones. Regardless, if integration with the Google ecosystem is paramount, an AW watch will fulfill those duties better than the S3. But the LG Sport has a few serious shortcomings compared to the S3: inferior battery life, fixed wristband (a comfort and customization issue), and lack of MST. The LG Sport is the best AW 2.0 watch on the market only because it's the only one on the market right now. I too am waiting, I just chose to do it while using the S3 in the interim.

Gear Sport paid apps on other smartphones than Samsung

Gear Sport paid apps on other smartphones than Samsung
Hi guys,
I bought the Samsung Gear Sport and I can only access free apps on Gear app.
The paid apps don't show here.
I tried with 2 android phones (unroot): Nexus 5 and Zenfone 3.
In my country (Brazil) it's possible to access paid apps ( I have a friend with Gear S3 and Samsung S7 and he can buy apps).
It's true that only Samsung phone can access the paid apps???
Why this Samsung?
I tried everything: reset, reinstall in both phones and nothing. Only free apps. The other things (notifications, apps and so) works OK.
Thank you.
Nobody here with a non Samsung phone and a Gear device??
Tks guys.

Hi, thank you very much for your response.
I can test and buy just a few watchfaces - those with a trial period.
You don't see paid apps like me? It is a crazy decision for Samsung to close the market for those who do not own a Samsung phone....
Thank you for your help.
And, you liked the Gear Sport? I'm happy! Using in the gym, using sometimes to track the sleep, and for notifications. Great device. :good:
