It has just always been my default move to flash Gapps after a custom ROM flash. Reflex just like flashing SuperSU.
Lately I'm annoyed with it, though. There are some apps I don't want to update, ever. Using an app to remove the market link for an app works till you run the Play Store again, so it really doesn't work. Then you have to go through the apps one by one and update them instead of touching "Update All", or just remove the market link every time before you check for updates via Play. I suppose you could write a script that runs before the Play Store to do this automatically, but this is another annoyance rather than a fix IMHO. And you still get Play Services running the BG whenever it feels like it. Also something I don't like.
So, anybody not using Gapps at all on a DD device? And what are you using to get apps instead? I found androiddrawer.com to be pretty good, but any other full on "store" app seems to either not do enough of what Play Store does, or it does exactly what it does, and I don't want that, OR it's the Amazon "app store" which is just really stupid anymore.
So what I want is either an app store that gives me the option to leave an installed app alone forever and keep its stupid mouth shut about updates, OR ?
What do you use?
Seem to have answered my own question. 1mobilemarket does the trick. Gives me the option to ignore app updates. That's all I needed.
None of Gapps work in here so there are always localized alternatives to each Gapps.
I deinstall gapps with an app with root access

I never install the gapps in the first place. I have a number of extracted apk files for those essential play store only apps, the rest is coming via the f-droid repository.

how to extract apk from Gapps?
I went back to Gapps, unfortunately. F-droid does not have all I normally use, and they really need to have the option to ignore updates. Androiddrawer.com is an OK alternative, but not really ideal.
Think what I'll do it setup a dummy device in an emulator with Gapps installed to keep updated apks on tap and then I can cherry pick what I want with my real devices. Keeps data usage down to a minimum and lets me get rid of Gapps on my real devices. Wish there was a nicer way.
Actually, we here in Indonesia have some alternative app stores, but all of them aren't a replacement of Play Store.
Some of them are carrier-dependent for some features, like Gudang Aplikasi that their IAP only available to XL Axiata users and TemanDev and WePlay where their IAP only available for Telkomsel users.
Another app stores, like web-based JalanTikus and 9Apps, or Baidu Indonesia's MoboMarket.
These app stores' app lists were incomplete and no IAPs like Play Store has. So why Indonesians are using these app stores altogether with Play Store.

I'd like to get rid of gapps but I have one paid app that require the play store authenticator to run :/

just look in which section we landed!
and just cause the android market says something, doesnt make it so
On a sidenote though... ARe you sure that you
1. are logged into the browser using your phone's market account?
2. are you using market enabler on your phone? and if so, do you start it on boot or just when u need it?
the browser market thing shows ALL apps, even apps that are not available in your country so its always best to look for them in the market app directly
1. This usually happens when you use other market sources like Amazon where you get paid apps for free and then you try to update them from android market.
2. This also happens if you installed warez (cracked apps) from sites like Cyberandroid.com and then try to update them from market.
Otherwise there is no chance of this happening.
You will need to update them from the source you got them.
Plz post question in general section.

No this is not true. I had the same issue (Market app saying that app is not compatible with my phone) when I had the phone running with a changed LCD density. After visiting the Market via the app also the website showed me that many apps are incompatible. The only solution for me was to reset the density. After that everything went back to normal.
I also do not see where ayushextreme said that he is using a specific way to install apps from the market. Not the app nor via browser.
But I agree to vishal24387. This question is something for the general section.
I came across an interesting workaround today regarding the annoying refusal of Google Play Store to run when Google Play Services is not enabled. Running the following in a terminal will disable a component of Google Play Services that prevents the check when you start the Play Store:
Code:
pm disable com.google.android.gms/com.google.android.gms.recovery.RecoveryService
Note: I have not tested this enough to know if there are any significant drawbacks yet.
I can say that this will finally allow Google Play Services to be greenified (although other components such as Google Backup Transport seems to occasionally prevent greenification). In addition, it seems to stop all those logs from being written to /data/system/dropbox/, which I personally found to be very irritating, and found the alternative solution of setting the folder to read-only to be problematic.
Unfortunately it looks like google play services is necessary to allow you to download apps from the play store. I didn't realize it at first because the checkin service had already done its thing and I was free to use everything until it was time for the next checkin. I'll post here if I find out any way to overcome this, but it looks like Google Play Services is probably necessary for the Play Store to function.

Yeah, there is absolutely no workaround.Play Services forms the core for the Google Playstore App.hence it can't function without it.

...Just wanna let you guys know, there's a google thread, in which people talk/ed bout the purpose of .services. Turns out you really need that sh*t!XD
It's like a framework you simply need to have installed- just like @donniemceduns said. ^ ^
Off-topic ― now, I'm on CM11, with no Google Play installed, therefore no .services running. I simply installed an alternative market. ^ ^

I tried them all — Mobogenie used to be ****ty, works fine now.
.apk link- DIRECT DOWNLOAD LINK
Has all the apps from Google Play. No sign-in required.
I didn't like it; it's okay now. Use it as my primary market
If you find a better market, make sure to share a link!

Thanks for the link. One question though. Lets say I install a kitkat rom. Can I remove all the Play Store services and their dependencies to improve my phone's performance? I plan to do this and let Mobilegenie be my only market. If this is possible how can I remove these services for good?

Hi Didi,
Yea, sure.
You already know this, but for all the people who didn't bother to read the thread, removing .services will result in errors, whenever you try to open a google application(Play store for instance), which requires .services.
I used a kitkat ROM before- deleted all G-apps and installed my alternative market. No errors! ^ ^
As for Mobogenie, it's my primary market on CM11. It features autoupdates, even auto-install if your device is rooted. Sweet! :good:
UPDATE:
Oh, sorry @didito! Didn't notice the "how can I remove these services for good" part.
Install an Uninstaller app for rooted devices( Your device must be rooted).
In-app: Navigate to SYSTEM APPS & remove google play services and google play store.
If you're not sure which app to use, try "Root App Delete".
Question... Or, an observation anyway... Sorry to bring back an old thread but I've been wondering a similar thing
On my newer device, Samsung Galaxy s5 neo, play services are needed to run the play store. *however*, on my older device, Samsung captivate glide, play services are not required to open the store.
Both using stock but rooted software from Samsung.
Why would this be that it's possible on 1 but not the other?
Unless maybe because I have already debloated my older device, maybe removing other gapps is what it would take?
I don't have a data plan and therefore wouldn't use much if any of them (maps, etc)
It just has me wondering what has changed between the 2, and maybe even if I'd be able to use and run my other devices play store app, and then use disable service to stop it from fully updating?
Hmm... I know everyone else has likely given up long ago.... But I've been curious today.
OK so a couple days into Cyanogenmod 12.1 unofficial...loaded a bunch of apps, processor and graphics intensive games.... This OS is awesome! But...time will tell really... After a few weeks, months, lets see how it performs...I have high hopes based on what I've experienced so far...
I'm running this on my SG Tab 3 10.1 P5210
A few things I should mention:
1. I had a big learning experience (major noob here) with TWRP recovery. For some reason Odin wouldn't allow me to unchecked 'auto reboot' as it was grayed out. So I modified the .ini file and changed the auto boot parameter from 1 to 0. Then I had to learn... First reboot after Odining TWRP.....HOLD HOME BUTTON+VOLUME UP+POWER..ONCE YOU SEE SAMSUNG LOGO RELEASE POWER STILL HOLDING HOME+VOLUME UP! Reason is, if you continue to hold power button, it's like disconnecting the battery, and reboots tab! UGH...after first successful boot into TWRP Recovery, is all good... To boot into recovery just boot holding power+VOLUME up like normal recovery... TWRP now loads so the time line of cake...
2. The Google Openapps zip did not install with Odin.. I .had to search around, I found frankin GAopen apps for 4.4 and installed via odin....took several play store updates until all Google apps settled down. There's prolly a better way to get the Google stock apps (play store, gmail, etc) that come with Android to install better but...I got them working so I won't complain...
3. When I change the wall paper, the image went whacky. Had to install a 2nd theme, switch themes, then switch back to straighten wallpaper iimage out
4. Keyboard was funky...I think this was from the frankinapps that I installed. Fixed by installing Google keyboard and disabling all others
5. When I install apps, I move them to my MicroSD card if possible. Any app with a widget (Weather Channel, Android Central, Calendar app, any widget app) that I move to the SD card doesn't work anymore. In fact I don't even see the app in the widget drawer. If I install say Android Central and place widget on any screen then move it to SD card it stops working. Fix is, move it back to internal storage.
6. Battery seems to drain quicker however Android 5.1.1 lollipop handles this well because once I get down to about 20% it drains much slower. Faster drain is prolly due to the fact that I'm actually using this tab much more than ever so, this may be a non-issue
7. Not sure if this is lollipop or Cyanogrnmod but, Lollipop (which is what Cyanogenmod is built on) has some really great features such as - auto adjust screen brightness and hue based on time of day.... This is very cool because it's 9:30pm EST and very dim in the room I'm in right now so the screen auto dimmed and adjusted the hue nicely... This is a big plus because it's very easy on the eyes and most importantly it save battery
Overall... Again... 2 thumbs up!!!!
I have also just installed CM12.1 on my SG GT-P5210, and found that for some unknown reason I could not download apps from Google Play store . They would not download to my tablet even tho' play store said it was installed, and I cannot find the apps on my tablet which I wanted. Anyone else have this problem.
Apart from that I like the OS and want to keep it.

So, you don't even have Google play store app right? You need to boot back into TWRP recovery and install the Google stock apps again... You might want to clear cache, delvik and all that...When you do install gaopen, watch carefully because you may experience the same thing as I did... Failure to install thus I found and used the frankin Google apps....

No I didn't have the Google play store app, and I only installed the CM12.1 file which only gives a few basic apps. I did try the open-gapps file, as far as I could tell maps and play store were installed, (maybe to the browser), but there were problems with both the play store and the maps apps. Neither of them would work, and the maps app error message said to uninstall maps then reinstall, but I couldn't find where I could uninstall , only to disable the app.
I also downloaded the play store app to my tablet, but again it would not work, as it just closed down as soon as I opened it up.
It's weired that the play store and maps work from the browser, but not from the actual tablet.

An update here: After installing open-gapps-arm-5.1-mini-20160203,zip, the problem is down to google services not responing or working. This happens when I try to open the play store, gmail and anything else related to google and I get a message saying that Unfortunately Google Play services has stopped. There seems to be some problem related to the 'checking info' screen which never completes.

(this is a duplicate of my other thread. I realized the question doesn't ONLY apply to my old Nexus 4)
I'm trying to build an android phone with no Google apps on it, for privacy purposes.
I've got LineageOS on my rooted phone with no issues.
Getting apps is another matter. Amazon's app store doesn't even have Amazon's app, the LG store won't run on my phone. The various .apk-download sites I've seen either don't do paid apps, have outdated versions, or are basically for "cracked" apps, which i don't want to use.
Downloading .apk files can work, but most apps do not have such thing available, and I find often my phone's browsers choke on the link, and I have to download to my pc and then use adb to push the file across.
Is there a decent app store (or other app source) that isn't Google?
You could try Fdroid This is the website for Apk
Fdroid is all open source Apk's

What's wrong with Google? Whatever I have a few:
GetJar (Has not be well maintained, spam, malware etc. Lurking on there now)
SlideME (Abondon, apps are so old)
Aptoid (Has some stolen apk, malware)
TutuApp (dumb kids use it to get modded games and apps, don't go there)
The Internet (APKMirror is the best)
Google Play

How can i download and install app from Google Play Store ?
at this time i use Bliss-v11.4-Stable--OFFICIAL-20181223-2005_x86_64_k-kernel-4.19_m-18.3.1_pie-x86_f-dev-kernel.org for my laptop.
We clearly state in the Bliss OS thread that Google Play Store is not available and that Bliss OS only comes with FDroid & microG.
So how do we install gapps if we have paid apps we need to use? there appears to be no recovery to install it in the usual way.. (or for that matter how can I stop google play services repeatedly crashing on the earlier nougat and oreo releases of BlissOS?)
No gapps. No go.
Without gapps android is not much use to most people (much as we would all love to ditch google). I understand its not available in BlissOS, I guess the question is: are there any plans to incorporate the ability to add it easily, a more prominent and clear explanation on the XDA home page would be useful. I keep revisiting BlissOS to check if its been added I'd like to know if I should give up and just look elsewhere for an android emulator? This project looks great but without the ability to add play store , software many people will have already bought in the play store since the decade or so its been around can't be used. That's a serious deal breaker..

I'm with you guys until Bliss OS 14 on the the very latest release the Google Play store has worked at least help you guys don't even bundle browser what the hell is up with that I expect this kind of crap out of Circuit City on one of their phones that took to a chain but not that best Android operating system there is out for my system I mean you say after all but PlayStore was installed whenever I downloaded play some rest so I kind of expected it to at least log into my Google account I can't even log into my Google account I've been trying to get Bliss OS to work for ages I finally got a PC tool Boot It Up, all be it flawlessly, now all of a sudden it won't Run Google Play Store all of a sudden I had such a pain in the ass getting into work in the first place everything was all groovy until grub2win so bored my boot up somehow if I hadn't already had Bliss OS installed I would have had to manually try to figure out how to install it because there's no way to install the damn grub startup because when I try to run the installer for grub2win it says something about an autoit error and grub2win. EXE needs to be an object that happens when I try to install it uninstall it anyway that's not what we're talking about here I finally got to work ing setup by the grace of the Cyber gods a little bit of luck a little bit of ingenuity and some 1 0 10 duct tape why even advertise it is a the Google version if it's not going to have Google it'd be one thing if there was a simple way to just flip files onto it from Windows but there's not and even if there is I don't remember all those folders names right when I started Android for the first time on the new system especially when you put it into a blender with all the folders that you got to learn from gearlock either way what I'm saying is I agree and if you're not going to have at least the Google Play Store working it don't put a release out that supports the Google services just go all-out custom and then make an easy import export for the folders so you can sideload stuff easier and for god sakes put a browser in there so that you can at least download something if you don't have any other option. I spent two days trying to log my Google account in anywhere any account and email in the Play Store and I went and spent that much time had I known but every other version of bliss OS I had has been fine with Play Store so news to me if it's so public that you guys don't use Google Play Store you're doing a bad job of letting anybody know and sir I love your operating system so please don't take that too harshly. But I do second the notion that no PlayStore no Bliss it's a deal breaker at least without some other infrastructure in place.

The latest 14.3 that is supposed to have Google Play Store does not. it has Google Play services but you can't log into any accounts so it's pretty much useless other than getting the desktop to come up and it continuously crashes like the Play services not the Bliss
Now that I'm done replying to everybody else's comments I will say that I just installed the 14.3 Alpha it may be a beta now not sure forgive me. It does have Google Play services and it does boo'd up and there are significant changes to the boot script that goes into grub which in a way I really like except for the fact that some of the variables are hidden in two other scripts that I don't know where they are I found some of them cuz I've been digging through those damn folders so much for a year I just happen to know where they are but if you could please come in and some of the grab scripts like where some of the things are that are replaced by variables I noticed you did some like small scrubbing and then referred back to other variable names which I like because all the technical jargon is hidden and it makes it easier to understand but at the same time I had to custom write my grub script because my bootloader or something is screwy in order to reference the Bliss OS install I had to go in and change the Android 64 references from a previous install and I really had some issues trying to find some of the variables that are referenced in the new Bliss OS grub script I think maybe a key might be helpful like where does variable names are put into play like where I can go back and see what they are but if you don't want to do that you know maybe some kind of skeleton index would be very helpful in general though I love what you did with the grub Scripts if it's not you shout out to the guys at gearlock cuz it might have been they're installer that did it. The only reason I updated to 14.3 was because I had an issue when I install 14.2 my bootloader or whatever grub get out and I was on a grub recovery screen no matter what I did once I got Windows to boot I tried to boot Bliss which is where I got all cozy with your grub Scripts and noticed that things such as the start up flags were all underneath one variable Nifty if you can find out where to change them at. But anyways I figured since I messed up the Majestic install on the last update and no matter what I did it would not even reinstall it fix it or update it hey why not just go install the new update of bliss I proceeded to follow the links that I found it online one was an asteroid download and the other was a Play Store download oh how happy I was when it finally booted up then I couldn't figure out damn why won't it sign into my Google account followed by Play Services crashing repeatedly how do you fix it I don't know let's Google it no browser okay but sound like a browser oh put it into gear lock folder back to Windows where's the gear lock folder oh there's the gear lock folder it's been about 10 minutes what was I doing oh yeah oh yeah browser got to f****** find a goddamn APK you know one that's not riddled with viruses and malware okay maybe this will work back to Android in the gear lock folder so it's not there maybe they meant gear load back forth 20 minutes later nope that didn't work either oh after a while I dig and I figure out there's more than one gearload and more than one gearlock two copies of Firefox and an hour later still no browser you see what I'm getting at "FIX the PLAY STORE" it would have been easier to ADB it in I'm sure, the only reason I didn't do that is cuz wait a minute that extra layer of Wi-Fi network and I'm sure it would have have been a pain in the ass just as bad I mean I saw the little tutorial on what the ADB address was but you should just left a little picture of a bomb cuz we know that she would have b e e n a pain in the ass the hay known what I know now that's where I would have started and microG and asteroid that's a freaking joke for somebody that wants their system to work that one little Play services constantly crashing is nothing compared to the 50 that you're going to get with micro G & F Droid.
Google Play Services work perfectly fine on 14.3 if you go to Settings => Apps, locate the Google Play Services app, click it, then click the 3 vertical dot menu and restore Google Play Services to the original version. Then go to Google Play Store and disable auto-updates. I've been there too having Google Play Services constantly crashing every 30 seconds or so with no possibility to log in anywhere. After resetting to the original version this particular problem has been fixed. Play Store works, I can login into my Account.
The two browsers that work on 14.3 are Firefox and DuckDuckGo. Chrome and Opera crash on startup.

Then go to Google Play Store and disable auto-updates. I've been there too having Google Play Services constantly crashing every 30 seconds or so with no possibility to log in anywhere. After resetting to the original version this particular problem has been fixed. Play Store works, I can login into my Accounbecat.

thats not working here 5 seconds after i boot for the first time its not updated and if it is really dragging its ass to log in i dont reall think its gonna let me change any settings and i dont think its gonna let me log in. granted i can revert it but that setting is the very first thing i do on any android because i cant stand it when i had a working device and then google does its bs and f**ks all my apps right off the bat so i dont think thats the issue it never had a chance to update. but in all fairness ill look again and if i find myself here again i will feedback. Thank you for your suggestion.

Well, I forgot one important step - before clicking the three dots and reverting the Google Play Services app to the initial state you have to stop/disable it altogether in the same dialog. You have the options to Disable and Force Stop it. Just disable. A lot of things like Google Play Store, Calendar whatever relies on Google Play Services will start crashing, disable these apps too. Revert the Google Play Services to the original state, enable Google Play Store back and stop auto-updates in Google Play Store.
I had exactly the same problem and this solution has worked perfectly fine for me. As a matter of fact I was able to login to Google Play Store and download many apps. Half of them didn't work but it least I got a Web Browser - Firefox and DuckDuckGo are the only one that functioned - and a book reader.
Thank you!
The problem that I am facing doing your solution is there isnt any 3 dot menu like on other apps
