You can root your device without downgrading. Unlock your bootloader on htcdev.com, install a custom recovery (over fastboot), flash supersu or superuser in recovery.
If you want to downgrade, you'll have to unlock on htcdev.com, root your phone like above, then use misc_version to change the version reported by your phone, relock the bootloader and run the older RUU.

i rooted my phone a while ago, and i think i remember unlocking bootloader but im not sure. i DO have TWRP recovery, does that mean that i had to unlock my bootloader to get it; thus it is unlocked?
thanks!

well to get root/custom recovery you either had to have made it s-off or you unlocked your bootloader. whats the problem? are you not able to get into hboot to check?
bootloader
If you let me know your phone make and model i will be happy to show you how to check boot loader status.
Hi Guys i recently got this phone i wanted to know if we can flash twrp with s-on and if it will have any consequences?
If you have a Verizon m8 with s-on then i assume you also have a locked bootloader. Attempting to flash a custom recovery won't hurt anything but it won't be successful either.

any way i can unlock bootloader without sunshine i m on 4.4.4 rooted with weaksauce2.
You would need either sunshine ore to find one of the folks with a java card to get you s-off. Why are you opposed to sunshine? Many people have had success using it with king root.

Is there a way to just root your phone without unlocking your boot loader? I just want to simply root and install some apps that require root but that is it.
Thanks...

I'm pretty sure that you need to unlock your bootloader first.
Not sure if you can unlock - root - relock ??
I think this is not possible yet without unlocking the bootloader.

Once you unlock and relock your bootloader, its status will be relocked, so your warranty is void anyways.
So I have to unlock the boot loader first. Dam I assume that is on the difficult side of things as well...

If you want the status to show "locked" and not relocked to get your warranty back, you can use the downgrade package from nougat to marshmallow and flash stock B131.
I managed to relock my bootloader using this method : my fastboot screen says "locked" (and not "relocked")

Wait for kingroot method. No need to unlocking bootloader to root, people do it because its only one way to have root on honor 8 now - by flashing supersu in twrp, and twrp/modified recovery you can flash only if you unlocked your bootloader first.

I confirm.
I want to root my honor 8 L04 but I was wondering if it will void my warranty.
Thanks,
Thinh
Yes it does and the current method for rooting is kinda sketchy at this time. I'm waiting untill the lineage ROM is done and hopefully by then we will have a better rooting method.

Is it possible to relock bootloader after unlock? I've read a lot of opposing opinions about this :/

Yes you can relock the bootloader, however it will say relocked bootloader and not locked bootloader like it originally said so you can still see that the bootloader had been unlocked at some point.

To get the status "locked" back you have to downgrade to emui 4.1

I have one question, if I had unlocked bootloader, installed TWRP and rooted my phone, then unrooted it, reverted to stock recovery and relocked bootloader, can I still receive OTA updates?

no its not , the latest version of twrp posted in the dev section fix's all the issues before
now its as simple as Unlock / Flash TWRP / Flash the version of supersu in the twrp post / Profit !
