[Q] Subtitle problems when using HW decoder - MX Player

I have a slight problem with my subtitles when playing a video using HW decoder.
It doesn't happen all the time but like 80% of the time.
When I play a video using HW decoder, for the first few seconds the subs are displayed smoothly. The time is random. Can be less than 5 secs or more than 10.
Then after this it will start to be "delayed"
The reason why i made it in a " " is because, it's kind of not really a delay. The subtitles will show a few seconds after the actual time it should be. Sometimes it doesn't show at all and skips some of the texts. Sometimes the disappearance of subs can last for 30 secs. The remedy I discovered for this is to tap the screen, this makes the UI show up. Whenever I do this the subs go back to normal...... and goes delay again. It just repeats the cycles.
However, this doesn't happen when I use SW decoder. I played with the settings a bit. Tried turning off HW acceleration. Tried turning on Android 4.0 Compatible mode. Some settings at Decoder. Nothing. It still happens.
I'm not sure if this happens to others as well but if you would know anything that would help, I would greatly appreciate it.
Some info of my phone:
Android 4.4.4. (kitkat)

Try disabling hardware overlays in Android system developer tools, see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for this! Worked like a charm.
However, i might be asking too much but what does it do? What happens if the hardware overlay is enabled or disabled?
Will there be any problem if I leave it disabled?

I have exactly the same problem but disabling hardware overlays in Android System does not fix it.
My box is Tronsmart RK3368.
I really appreciate your help.
Thanks in advance

@somzx ah missed your question earlier.
Normally, the android system can render various different screen components as different "layers", and these layers can be individually hardware accelerated. Disabling hardware overlays means the previously separate hardware accelerated layers are drawn via software and/or into the main layers instead.
@sviet2k not sure what else it could be. You could always try changing the sub render timing delay to a negative delay in MX settings, see if that helps.
Just to confirm does the problem go away if you use SW decoder?

Hi CDB-Man,
Thanks for your help.
Changing the delay time does not help because the sub sync problem happens only after ~10 minutes playing. The sub sync is perfectly at the beginning then after 10 minutes, the delay happens.
Yes. I don't have problem of sub sync with SW and HW+. I need to play movies with HW (not HW+) to able to have DTS passthrough via SPDIF.

Hmm, then you may just be out of luck; when using HW, you're passing the subs through the Android media framework, and asking the system to native render the subs; MX's implementation of sub rendering is much better than system. Curious, are these srt, ass, pgs, or some other format of subs?
Also, I'm not an expert on the audio side, but there's no SPDIF passthrough even with the custom audio codec by @ktsamy ? (I assume not, given the nature of SPDIF passthru).

No, it will not enable audio pass through.

Hi,
This sync problem happens with external srt and also the srt embedded in the mkv file.
Just for curious, why the HW decoder send DTS sound via SPDIF but the HW+ downmix DTS to 2.0 sound ?
Again thanks a lot for your help

Disabling hardware overlays in Android System does not fix it for me as well, there must be some other option to do so. Please help us with a perfect solution. Thanks in advance!

The using the beta build instead. Join the Google+ beta build release stream.
https://sites.google.com/site/mxvpen/translation/test-build
The beta build has a new SW subtitle rendering engine.

Hi CDB-Man,
Thanks a lot to let us know there is a new version that may be fix the sub problem.
I install the beta build on two boxes: android 5.1 (mine) and 4.4 (friend)
Unfortunately, it does not fix the sub issue on my Android 5.1 box but there is no problem on box that has Android 4.4.
I hope this info can help you to identify the cause of the problem.
Thank you

Multi-window transparency issue

I am a heavy user of multi-window.
I recently started to use mx player as my video player of choice and I came across a problem.
The video plays fine but the issue lies with the interface. While using mx player, the interface would only show the video while the background stays transparent.
Initially I figured it was a setting in the options, however those transparency options have to do with the interface with the controls instead of the idle interface.
I tried other players to see if it was an issue with multi-window, however I was unable to replicate the issue.
Suggestions are appreciated.

@Alertdotexe Would you test latest test version? https://sites.google.com/site/mxvpen/translation/test-build
This issue might be fixed.
Feedback will be appreciated.
Thanks
@bleu8888
I wholeheartedly appreciate the suggestion, it works beautifully.
@bleu8888
Upon further testing I noticed initially at installation, every works perfectly, however when my system reboots or powers off, the player upon booting up has the same background transparency issue as before.
I have uninstalled and re-installed it which works again until I reboot or power off.

Would you check version of MX Player after rebooting your device?
MX Player looks like being rolled back to old version (or to official version from Google Play Store) somehow.

I believe you are correct, I disabled auto update with mx player on the store and rebooted my device about 10 times to make sure everything is working properly and consistently. Since I disabled auto update, everything seems to be working as intended.

Recorded video and YouTube playback errors

Noticed today that when I record a video on my Honor 8 I can not play it back. It's just a black screen with audio. Also, the YouTube app just "loads" - good 4G LTE signal or over WiFi. Might be separate issues. Cleared the cache and uninstalled the YouTube updates.
Anyone else seeing this or know of a fix?

But you might have another app that messes with the video driver.
Unless anyone pinpoints the exact cause I suggest you backup with Huawei Backup to SD or PC, factory reset, setup Google account and nothing more. THEN test to see if it behaves the same.
If it does, then you might have a malfunctioning unit.
If it doesn´t then it´s either an app or a file messing with your ROM. Try to restore your backup one-by-one app until you see the problem appearing so that you can identify the app.

How about xposed?
Hi There, we recommend you back up the device and perform a "master reset" to see if that fixes the issue. To perform a master reset, you will go into your menu and click settings, then go to Back Up & Reset. Follow the prompts on the screen to back up and factory reset, then continue by following the steps to restart and activate the device (note: you will need to have your Google email/password present at startup).
If you still can't get playback on your videos to work properly, you should call in to our knowledgeable Honor customer service center at +1-844-524-6667 and they can further diagnose the situation you are having with video recording and playback. Thanks for your question! (NS)
Video playback seems to be a general weakness on the phone. I have experienced occasional glitches as well as battery drainage. It could be that the hardware (imaging processor) is weak.
Do a factory reset and see if it works
I'd actually like to raise awareness about this issue, my device works great other than this video issue arising and is progressively getting more annoying every time it happens.
There was this previous thread where, someone else had this problem and someone said that it was a "Known Bug", but I'm not sure where the source for that information is. Thread HERE.
I've done two factory resets since I got the phone in hopes that the problem clears up but it still happens from time to time, and the only way to fix it is to reboot the phone.
A summary of the issue is this:
- Youtube videos only load, but don't play. If you have youtube red, the video plays once you leave the app and audio only plays in the background, and when you return to the youtube app the video continues to play, audio only, with a black screen.
- Playing recorded videos from the video app, or any video app for that matter (Built in Video app, MX Player), videos only show a black screen, and plays audio only.
- Playing videos in Chrome, or anything that uses the android WebView (Such as Reddit while looking at GfyCat''s), doesn't load or shows a black screen
- The only way to get it all working again is to Reboot the device. However, in some rare cases, it magically starts working again.
I did speak to a live support agent on the honor website (David B) about the problem about a week ago in order to try to raise awareness of this issue, in hopes that someone takes notice and finds a workaround or fix for the problem.
I know for a fact that this issue isn't caused by Root, Xposed or anything related to unlocking the bootloader as the issue happened with a fresh restore, and an unmodified device a few days into owning my honor 8.
In conclusion, we need to see and know how many total are having this problem, and how many people haven't had this issue at all, just to ensure that those having the problem (Like me) don't have a defective unit. If only a small percentage of us are experiencing this issue then there is a possibility that those who have this issue like me have a defective device and would need to take action quickly to somehow obtain a new device.
P.S: I've been trying to figure out what triggers this issue to happen and what 'Magically' fixes it while the device is on, without rebooting, ever since I got my device. I'll report back if I ever come across something significant
Update Sept22: I can confirm that there is some issue happening with the hardware decoder as in MX Player video doesn't play when HW Decode is selected but works when SW Decode is selected. Still trying to figure out how to get it working again from its broken state without having to reboot the phone
It seems that there is a software issue which makes the phone unable to use HW decoders correctly
its a reported problem with honor 8, many users are facing the same issue, hope honor fixes it soon with a software patch.
It released an update for both US and EU model, now it's time to wait and see

When streaming a video my fault is. It plays a bit the video pauses but audio continues as normal. This can be fixed by rewinding or fastforwarding a little but same happens again ever so often 3 times per half hour playback

MX Player Version 1.8.10 pausing during music playback after pressing the back button

Hi, I just updated my mp player to the recent version (1.8.10) and I seem to have issue of my music getting interrupted during playback whenever I press the back button on my device. I can't seem to find the "settings" option in the app to solve this. When I was on the previous version of the app, I remember entering a particular setting to solve this same issue but now, I can't seem to find that same settings to rectify the issue. Please any help will be very much appreciated.
Thanks.
P.S. I am using amazon kindle fire hdx with ARMv7 Neon codec installed alongside MX Player.

It's very unfortunate that you can't find the menu.
Don't you have 3 vertical dots in top right corner?
I have the same issue. Focus is lost when locking the screen or changing to another app and music pauses for a second then resumes. I have looked at all the settings and tried various methods in hope of resolving this issue, but nothing worked.
Same here. Back to version 1.7.40.
How to back to version 1.7.40?

MX Player Problem on Galaxy S8 plus - Random stop working on background

Hello
I am using Galaxy S8 plus (Latest update as of security patch dated Aug 1) with MX Player Pro (+ Neon Codec) . Whenever the player is working in background , it plays for like 10 or maximum 30 minutes and then it will no longer making any sound. (I am using this to listen to hours of music videos in backgroud in all my android devices)
I have checked and this is happen no matter using HW/HW+/SW codec and also it is same behavior no matter running on SD or Internal storage. (The Video are just 320p video)
I've already put the app monitoring on Galaxy S8+ stop / add to the unmonitored list and behavior is also same
If I use VLC to do the same in background , it doesn't stop so assume that is not SD card problem I am hitting ( no error in SD Card Monitor app)
Anyone have similar problem ? Thanks

I can actually reproduce the problem now (not on a specific video but seems to be something longer than e.g. 22 minutes )
Let me send you a video link from youtube and you can do that simulation on your side by download it to the internal folder by using same video I am using (not only one video have problem but I play the same file twice and figured out both 2 times stop on around similar time frame)
I will provide the logs when I back home
Thanks

Thank you , this means I am not alone on this issue.
It doesn't seem to happen with every file...some MP3s seem fine, some fail consistently, AVC/AAC from YouTube and Twitch have the same problem, but less frequently. This podcast seems to have the problem pretty consistently...it'll play for about 10 minutes 50 seconds and then stop until you close the file and open it again or seek forward. Just got this phone and didn't have any of these problems on my S5 with all the same settings.

HI,
we have tried the same youtube video in our S8 Plus multiple times. still, couldn't reproduce the issue. It played completely till the end. Are running the device in power saver mode? In the logs, We have noticed buffering throughout the playback which is quite abnormal for a local file. The second thing the video was continuously playing till you tapped on the notification.
Is it possible to collect the complete system logs using adb? The bug report from MX Player will be limited MX Player logs.
Complete logs may give more insight if it's something related to system services.

I guess that is related to some buffer related setting as well. It is same for powersave , on , off , on with unmonitored app etc ( on all HW/HW+/SW codec combination)

Is this log collected immediately after noticing the issue?
The last playback was a mp3 file & lasted 1-2mins.
Looks like you are playing through a Bluetooth device. is it happens when playing through internal speakers?
Suspect it happens when there is a drop on the Bluetooth connection.

I'd thought the same thing initially but it happens whether Bluetooth is connected or not. That particular file always plays for about 10 minutes at a time so it makes it easier to reproduce the problem but I was playing at 400% speed for brevity - it stops in the same way at normal speed. The logs are intentionally cut down in order to keep only relevant data. The same file plays fine on my S5 and other videos and audio do the same thing though less consistently.

Weird switching issue.

So I just updated MX Player Pro, and am getting a weird issue. I have background playback on, and everything was fine previously. Now, however, if I every switch, and background playback starts, it messes up what happens after the video ends. Ie, if the video isn't over when I switch back, it will keep playing, and when it does end, it drops to the launcher. If the video is over when I switch back, it just restarts, and will drop to the launcher when over, or if you ff to the end.
Even tried clearing storage, etc. I don't know if its a bug, regression, cantfix, wontfix, etc. Anybody have any ideas?
