Ok, so the problem I'm having is pretty simple. When the contents on the screen are dark, the brightness decreases. When I display something bright the brightness increases. The change is clearly visible and I think it's the culprit of my battery drain problems.
Yes the adaptive brightness is off, and I tried it on different image enhancement modes including no enhancement. If you guys want I can make a video hoping it will be visible.
Anyone else experience the same issue?

Turn off automatic brightness.
OP did. It's in his post.
I noticed this as well, I thought I was going crazy. Not really sure if it's a hardware or software problem.
I also noticed that whenever adaptive brightness is on it tends to overexpose everything for a few seconds when you wake the phone.
I know! I really thought I'm going crazy and seeing things but it is there! It's really annoying...

If you have root, try to change lines in build.prop
ro.qualcomm.cabl=2
to 0 and/or
ro.qcom.ad=1
to 0.
I didn't test but it should disable content adaptive feature.
Sorry to dig up an old thread but was this ever solved? I just picked up a Z5 today and right away I noticed the same thing. I have adaptive brightness off, x-reality off too. Depending on what's on the screen the brightness changes.

I've looked at past threads, but found no resolution to this.
I'm running voodoo colour with deep black settings and everything looks great, except right before the screen times out it will dim to its lowest setting and force the amoled panel to turn a sickly yellow/green hue.
I would like to disable the dim aspect and just let the screen time out by shutting off completely. Is there anyway to do this? I'm running the latest version of Pixel Rom with Air Kernel 4.2. I don't have auto-brightness enabled.
i am having the same issu i dont have to yellow tint in low light
but still i whould like to disable the dim it is disturbing my daily use of the device
i too dont see any point for this time out before the screen turns of
and i cant understand why when plying a game i need to touch the screen every 25 sec to get rid of the dim
thanks
I remember seeing something about auto-brightness light sensor tweaking back when I was using NV rom last year but I don't know if that would apply or not.
Does anyone know if the custom apps on the market avoid this?
edit: Tried Tasker for a full screen-off solution, and a bunch of other apps. Wasn't able to get the results I wanted :I
I have a Samsung Captivate and I am running a kernel with voodoo color support with this same issue.
The first post of this thread shows a possible solution - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002090
I flashed the pixel os android 10 in my redmi note 7 and now i am facing screen lock issue my phone does not accept any screen lock that i am trying to apply on it plzz help me
So, we all know that at the moment one of the main things that kills the battery life is the screen.
I don't know how you feel about it but I think the Z1 is really bright, even when at minimum. If we could lower the brightness beyond the normal controls wouldn't that help with the battery life?

Thanks for that! Sounds like a good app. I will try it and see the effect on the battery life, hopefully it will help.
Seconding the Lux Lite vote: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vitocassisi.luxlite
With it set to Dynamic and Day, in profile editor change:
Lux - 0 = -55
Luma - 1 = -55
and leave all other variables the same.
That seems to give me a good range of brightness for my eyes - readable in bed with no lights on in the room without waking my partner and full brightness in head on daylight.
Hi, I'm looking for a way to decrease the backlight brightness.
Right now even a full black screen lights up my bedroom and I
have the related slider at the minimum with the adaptive setting
turned on. I've tried a few apps but none of them changed the
illumination of blacks.

I've tried that along with a few others. It couldn't dim the backlight beyond what is possible
with the stock brightness slider. After a while it just changes the white point, the blacks
keep glowing the same.

It's physically impossible to reduce the brightness at a Lux of zero beyond what the panel/kernel allow. However you CAN apply a dark filter over the entire screen to simulate the effect of reducing the brightness. This appears to be what Lux Lite and Velis Autobrightness both do.
It works fine for me and when viewing the screen in the dark there is very little light emitted using the settings I stated above. However if you don't make the changes I stated above you won't see the darkening effect.

That's a shame. :\ When my phone is docked it shows a full screen
clock: black background, dark gray digits so any screen filter would
just decrease contrast. I guess I'll need to fix a dark plastic sheet to
the dock to physically cut down the brightness.
I ended up putting a microfiber screen cleaning cloth over the device. It's wrinkle resistant
and big enough so it covers both the front and the back without slipping off. It doesn't look
like it but when near the screen it let's through a surprising amount of light making the
fullscreen clock easily readable. Compatible with all Android versions and doesn't require
rooting.
May I ask, it is possible to dim the three buttons below with Lux?

The kernel allows 4095 brightness steps, I'm not sure what the stock slider does, but I'm pretty sure the lower values aren't even touched.
I started developing a Lux plugin, but ran into a bug with lux itself, I'll try to contact the dev for help.

Guys i have an arc S and just have a small suggestion (not sure it will work on ur device but i dont think there is any harm in doing it)
If u have root
I have created a script to lower my brightness below the actual amount, i didnt use any app from playstore as it actually just placed a black overlay on the screen and the brightness was actually still the same
Well go to my Contributions in my signature and under scripts look at the brightness Adjuster script
Try it
Do not set too low value
I also do not know the default value on ur device so sorry

J7 prime not have auto brightness fitur.
I'm not sure what it is with this phone's auto brightness but comparing it to my old nexus 5 I can see that this phones screen is always darker. I know autob its working because I sometimes see it change automatically but its just always set to be way too dark. I
f anyone else has this problem or know how to fix it without having to manually adjust the brightness that would help a ton.
Also if you changed your lux levels please post those.
On and also I do have the official screen protector on if that matters.

Yes, it is a little dark, you can go to settings/display & light and hit the little gear icon, hit adjust and set up the screen brightness you like depending on the ambient light.
i am facing that some time while scrolling brightness increases for some millisecond and come to normal. i found that is twitter, some huge page in browser page.
can any one tell what could be the issue hardware or just a software bug which can be fixed with other rom installation.
Hello! Me and my wife both got this phone at the same time from the same place, but hers goes to a much lower minimum brightness than mine.
Does anyone know of a way to lower the minimum brightness?
EDIT: Okay, i did some poking around in ADB, found the "current brightness" file in /sys/class/leds/lcd_backlight0/brightness. Both phones report a brightness value of 65 when manually set to minimum brightness. The 65 sounds to me like they could go lower, is there any way to change the values used for the brightness slider? Or the automatic brightness curve.
Why not just use the screen filter app? I'm using it on every device to make screen real dark.
Skickat från min Nokia 3110i
Screen filter apps can't lower the backlight, which means they all ruin the screen contrast. They do work all right on OLED screens though since the blacks are already black.
It can be fixed with a buildprop edit, MAYBE
Here are some steps you can take to help fix your issue with the brightness.
Please restart your phone. If restarting your phone does not work, perform the following steps:
- Check if the light sensor works properly. If the light sensor is blocked, the screen brightness may become abnormal.
- By default, your phone automatically adjusts screen brightness according to the ambient brightness to bring you an optimal visual experience.
- If you need to adjust the screen brightness manually, turn off the function and manual adjust the brightness.
- If you think that the screen color temperature is too cool or warm, adjust the color temperature.
- If the screen has experienced an external shock, the internal LCD may have been damaged, resulting in abnormal screen brightness or color. Please back up important data and take the receipt issued with your phone to an authorized Huawei service center for repair.
Another option you can do is to purchase one of our third-party tempered screen protectors on Amazon. (NS)
Sure seems like this phone has so many bugs.

Does anyone have problem with Automatic low brightness. When i set it, it works but when a notification comes it goes brighter (this is normal) but after 15 seconds when it goes AOD mode sometimes screen not goes dark again even in low light environment. it keeps itself bright. Then i need to push the one of the buttons to awake the watch then auto brightness low works well as it should be. I dont thing this watch has a good light sensor like s7 or s7 edge phone.

Although i notice this too, it is not sensor's fault, watch does have an excellent ambient sensor. You can test ambient sensor in:
Settings -> Gear Info -> About Device -> Tap several (5 if i remember correctly) times to Software Version -> dial *#0*# -> Sensor -> Scroll down to light sensor -> Click display -> It will show you the raw and lux values from sensor.
Now the problem is at s/w side, OS is not polling sensor readings while it is in always on display mode, so watch stays exactly at the same brightness level as it goes into the aod and since notifications keeps a screen lock that brightens the screen it enters aod with a bright screen. We should report this to the samsung for a fix probably.

Did you change anything except that notification settings? I tried changing notification settings but it didn't make any difference. But flashing my watch did solve the problem or it seems so, so far. I was at R760XXU1APK6 firmware i flashed R760XXU1APK7 now. I don't know if it is fixed because of firmware difference or if it was caused by an application on the watch and flashing got rid of it. I'll update this post if it returns in any point.
Edit: I used the watch during the day today and it is back so it wasn't about firmware or apps after all. Now i regret flashing.
