[Completed] How to upgrade an Android OS on an unlocked phone? - XDA Assist

I am currently having an issue trying to upgrade my phone from (Android OS 4.0.4 Ice cream Sandwich), I cant quite figure out how to do it or if it's even possible but I am trying to upgrade the phone from (4.0.4) to (5.0 Lollipop). As I said before i'm not even sure if its possible to do it but I would like all the help I can get. Also I have already rooted my phone assuming that I would most likely need to in order to upgrade but I have stopped there and don't know what to do now.
These are the phones specifications:
*Phone: Samsung Galaxy S2
*Model: SPH-D710
*Rooted: YES
*Purchase date: 2011-2012
*Provider: Unlocked phone
*Service: I'm using virgin mobile on an unlocked phone.
Those are all the specifications if any more are needed please just request in a reply.
So I'm trying to upgrade the version of the OS to 5.0, any help with this would be great if its not possible what is the latest OS I can upgrade it to and how would I do that?

Hello,
Welcome to XDA.
Ok, if you are on 4.0.4 then there are a few extra steps you need to go through before you actually get to where you can flash a custom ROM.
You are already rooted, next you will need to flash a custom recovery(CWM/TWRP/Philz), then you will have to flash a custom 4.3 ROM and an Ice Cream Sandwich modem, then you will flash a custom 4.4 ROM, then you can flash a 5.0 ROM, at least that's the steps i had to go through way back when i first rooted the one i have and flashed up to Kit Kat from 2.3.6(AFAIK there are no custom 5.0+ ROMs for the Epic 4G Touch but there are plenty of nice Kit Kat 4.4.4), I have one also and I've been looking for 5.0 for a while and haven't found one yet but i haven't dug deep to find one. If you find one please send me a PM with a link to where it is, I would appreciate it.
Try posting your question in the link below, the Epic 4G Touch forum is mostly dead and non-active threads, I doubt you will get any help or replies there.

The experts there may be able to help.

[Q] Nexus s update

Hello!
are new to the forum, and I had a request for help and clarification from you.
I recently purchased the nexus as if originally fitted Android 2.3.3, so far I have not received any OTA update it to 2.3.4 above it ... how can I do to solve this problem?
I can go to 4.0.3 without going first to the previous ones??
look forward to your responses on!!
There is a stickied thread in general that has the links to all of the updates for the NS. Go to your specific phone model and download either the update (2.3.3 -> 4.0.3 or similar) or a full rom which can be flashed at any stage.

[Q] Boost Mobile Samsung Nexus SPH-D720 Latest COMPLETE WORKING version???

Good Evening. I am using a Sprint branded Samsung Nexus S SPH-D720 on the Boost Mobile Network and have the 2.3.7 version of Android currently installed. I am new to these forums, and am looking to upgrade the current Operating System on the phone to the new Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.? version. Which is the best, newest, WORKING version that I should upgrade to as of today? Remember I am new, and NOT familiar with the flashing process on cellphones. Is there a guide I can use to help walk me through the process, and to backup the current version in case I make a mistake somewhere along the way - so that I can restore it? Someone please help. Thank you VERY MUCH!!!!

First of all you should consider if you want to unlock and root you phone. For most Roms you need to unlock the phone (which can be undone later) and the roms come with root access (which, under some circumstances can void your warranty).
Maybe you could just use the official ICS update, with that you don't really need to bother with flashing etc. if you don't want to.
Otherwise, you'll find lots of different roms in here (mainly in the android development forum) and also lots of guides how to do certain things.
Just look around, I'm sure you'll find most of the guides / answers you are looking for. If not, you sure are welcome to ask
just don't forget that you have to set your APN back to boost whenever you flash a ROM for your mms to work.
If you need help with flashing, send me a PM and I'll do what I can to help

[Q] Rooted Tab 2 7.0 GT-P3113 Update Prep Questions

I used the steps described by cbetso 14 May 2012 on HOW TO ROOT YOUR TAB (message #33) in the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 section of xda developers Forum. It is the unlockr method. It worked great. Thank you to everyone there who shared so much!
It gave me the message: "You have successfully rooted your tablet as well as installed CWM recovery on it."
The 4.0.4 update was offered by Samsung several months ago, and Jelly Bean may be offered in the future. My questions are simple:
In the rooting process, did I overwrite the official ICS 4.0.3 Samsung ROM?
May I update to 4.0.4 from the currently rooted state?
Must I remove CWM before updating?
And/or must I do something else to prepare the Tab in advance of applying the updates?
If so, please point me to a location on the forum where the steps are listed.
Sorry for the Beginner questions. Thank you in advance for any help.

The 4.0.4 update was offered by Samsung several months ago, and Jelly Bean may be offered in the future. My questions are simple:
In the rooting process, did I overwrite the official ICS 4.0.3 Samsung ROM? No, all you did was provide a modified script. Although, I may be stood corrected, as I did not find your link to your rooted method.
May I update to 4.0.4 from the currently rooted state? If you are rooted, then no you need to be Stock. Unless some one has provided an Updated.zip, then that can be applied over your root method.
Must I remove CWM before updating? No, if you have returned to Stock. The Stock Recovery will be applied over the Custom Recovery. Unless again, someone has provided the proper Updated.zip that can be applied through a Custom Recovery.
And/or must I do something else to prepare the Tab in advance of applying the updates? If you return to Stock, No. If someone has provided an Update.zip to flash from a Custom Recovery (i.e, CWM), then No...
If so, please point me to a location on the forum where the steps are listed. Hello bettyhills, I am fairly new to this particular device, and the only thing I have found here is a download in regards to a 4.0.4 update, from the 4.0.3 Stock version, is a download that consisted of a bunch of partition files, that needed to be installed via Heimdall. In my hesitation primarily, because it neglected to provide the correct instructions. I opted to wait for the Jelly Bean updated, which has yet to have been correctly distributed for the GT2-p3113 device, although there is a GT2-p3110 version out there... To reiterate, in my hesitation I told myself I would wait for the Jelly Bean update before flashing a Stock Rom to rightfully except an Official Samsung Distribution, by returning to Stock and re-rooting...
Although, you may want to wait for a more like-able suggestion..., from someone else!!!

Hey guys Im new to the developing thing and I need a help because I'm really confused at the moment. So basically, I have Samsung Galaxy S II LTE, SGH-I727 Rogers version, and it has android version of 4.0.4. It's rooted with a cyanogenmod9. And now I want to upgrade it to cyanogenmod 10 or even 11, but i guess first i have to get the android version 4.1.2 . So I'm curious if i do a software update, and upgrade it to android version 4.1.2 will I loose my root?? and will I be still able to root it to Cyanogenmod 10 or 11?? Or i don't know, maybe you might suggest me something useless in order to update my old phone.
Thanks,
Looking forward to get useful information.
