[Q] Restore to stock

My nandroid backup was made after rooting, so after a restore from cwm (I was on jb deodexed) I was still rooted. I flashed a stock image from sammobile with Odin from PC and I lost root (that was my intention). All my apps and data are still here, did not lost anything. No wipe no cache clear nothing else. Binary count 0.
I want to be sure that when jb ota is released I'll be able to install it from the device without any issues.
Do I have to do anything else? I read in some posts that I have to flash the stock recovery, in others that the stock recovery is flashed within the stock firmware so I'm not really sure. Is there a way to verify?

try booting into recovery by holding down the power and volume up button at the same time until it starts to boot then release the power button and keep holding the volume up. This will boot into recovery and there you can tell if it's stock or CWM.

It's stock. After the nandroid restore from cwm when I wanted to reboot I was asked if I want to keep cwm or to restore stock, and I choose stock. I think I''ll do a wipe and whatever I can from the stock recovery. I'm just bored....

yeah and if all else fails when the update comes and you aren't able to get it then you can just factory reset and odin the stock firmware and then all should go smoothly.

The red triangle in the stock recovery is normal?

+1 it's worth the money to always have that as an option, just make sure you follow the directions (pretty simple)

It was the first thing I did after flashing the jb. As I stated in my first post, everything is ok on my device, I just wanted to be sure that I didn't miss something and that I'll be able to receive and use future OTA updates. I guess I'll have to wait to be sure, no point in making a tutorial on this yet.

Return to Stock

I'm sure this is discussed already but I can't seem to find it so if someone can help me or point me in the right direction.
I have a VZW GS3 that I have rooted, unlocked the boot loader and flashed CWM recovery. I then made a nandroid.
The main reason I did this was because I wanted Jelly Bean, and since Verizon is the slowest, I didn't want to wait so I installed custom ROMs.
Now that Verizon has released JB, I want to go back to my nandroid and then use the OTA firmware update service to upgrade.
Am I missing anything along the way that's essential for this to work?
Will the updated software re-root and/or relock my bootloader?
Will this automatically update the Baseband from my current VRLG7 to whatever the new one is?

One other thing, Will I still have CWM recovery after this happens? or will it revert back to stock recovery? or do I need to manually do anything to the recovery?

You're doing this to ultimately stay stock? Do you intend on flashing roms again or no? If you did a nandroid just after ONLY rooting and unlocking bootloader then restore it. Here's a step by step:
1) boot into CWM, restore your rooted, stock nandroid
2) Download EZ recovery, flash stock recovery
3) Wait for OTA
The OTA will relock your bootloader and unroot your phone. The JB OTA will also update your modem, and everything else, to VRBLK3.
One other thing, Will I still have CWM recovery after this happens? or will it revert back to stock recovery? or do I need to manually do anything to the recovery?

No, you will lose CWM if you do what I detail above. The OTA will fail if you still have CWM installed.

For the time being I intend on remaining stock, but I still want to root. Maybe once CM10.1 becomes stable, I'll go back to it, as of now I've had too many bugs with 10 nightlys and stable and 10.1 nightlys.

Nah I was just verifying to see if you modified any system settings or apps while on ICS TW. You should be in the clear as long as you reset CWM to stock recovery if all you did was root, unlock, then perform a nandroid.

No you do not, the nan will overwrite everything anyways. If you feel better then factory reset and clear caches, but it's not necessary.

I followed the instructions above and I'm back on my rooted TW.
When i try and update i get the following message:
Service Unavailable
To check for system updates, go to Settings > About device when service is available
What's wrong, how do i fix that?

searched around on google and a lot of people had the same warning error, multiple solutions were offered but none of them worked.
in the end, I ended up installing from odin completely stock unrooted, locked bootloader etc 4.0.4 (as f i want to return my phone to verizon) and once i did that it automatically updated to 4.1.1

ROMs not flashing, then restore doesn't work

First off, I apologize if I missed a thread that already talked about this. I tried to search for one, but I couldn't find one that actually helped me.
Ok, so I rooted my phone and unlocked the bootloader with Causal. Then I used GooManager to install TWRP and it is the latest version.
From there, I booted into recovery and did the following:
1) Did a backup to my external SD card
2) Factory Reset/wipe cache and Dalvik cache
3) Install ROM
I have tried both Carbon ROM v1.8 and Cyanogenmod 10.1.2. I have downloaded them on my computer, made sure my connection was good, matched up my MD5 sums, and I know that they are for my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 (d2vzw).
Once I thought the ROM would almost be installed, it would tell me it failed and tell me that there was a failure with executing binary updater. So from there I tried to use my Nandroid backup to restore my phone back to it's previous state. But when that was almost done, It gave me a failure as well. Unfortunately, I'm not even sure what the error actually was. So I used Odin to flash it back and blah blah blah.
So does anyone has any idea what I could be doing wrong? Or does anyone have any tips?

Thank you, but I already know how to flash it back to stock and everything. I just have an issue with getting my roms to actually flash and to have backups that will actually restore instead of handing out errors left and right.

I had the same type of issue. When the new ROM didn't work, trying to revert didn't flash. Read that this would reset back to STOCK and retried the new ROM flash.
1st link specified to follow EXACTLY. I messed-up one step. But once I got it right. All became great to go.
I thought as you have, just go with it for the fix.

[Q] Fastest way to flash back to stock 4.1.2

What way is the fastest and most secure to flash back to the stock samsung 4.1.2 image? Is there anyway I can use fastboot to format my entire phone and then push the stock image to it? I think there is an easy way to skip the flashcounter and ODIN. I am on CM10.2.1 (stable) and after countless ROM flashes and going back between 4.3 and 4.4 I have so many folders and directories and partitions it is crazy. How can I wipe the entire phone so nothing at all is on it and go back to TW 4.1.2.

A link to a guide would be helpful also. I can't seem to find one.

With what you are asking for, you want Odin. Odin flash this file and it will wipe your phone clean and restore you to stock, unrooted VRBMF1 4.1.2. You will want to root and unlock. Do not take any OTAs when your phone boots up. Follow section 5 of Droidstyle's guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709
Just use the tar file I linked below in Odin:
Only flash if it ends in .tar or .tar.md5, here is the VRBMF1 tar:

Depends if you have any ticks on the counter if you do you should triangle away before you odin. Are you planing on staying on touchwiz or will you be rooting unlocking and flashing a new rom? because if that is the case you could just wipe internal sd in twrp or clockwork mod then flash your desired rom on a nice clean internal sd.

I plan on flashing cleanrom8.1
If I wipe internal SD in recovery will it fix all extra file paths and partition problems I had before? And does wiping internal SD wipe the recovery?

It will do a format so as long as the partitions are the correct size it should fix any problems. Recovery will stay just as it was before the wipe. When you go to do the wipe just click on everything but external sd. I cant remember if it says format or wipe but do it a few times before you flash cleanrom and you should be on empty canvas to write your rom to. Just be warned that there is a format data option in twrp I believe (been a long time since I have seen a unmodified version) that will erase everything including external sd so don't use that. Also dont forget to have clean rom on your external before you start!

ooooohhhhh I hope you see this! If it only has sd card as a option in the wipe menu that is probably your external sd.

Hopefully you are still awake. I wiped internal memory and did a factory reset for safety (don't worry I removed my SD card haha) And I flashed CleanRom8.1 zip and it said it was successfully flashed. When I rebooted the device I got the "please enter pin or password for this encrypted device" message with an area to type in. This phone has never been encrypted. What do I do? If I wiped internal why would anything other than what I flash be on the phone.

I wiped Internal memory, wiped data&cache, reboot....bootscreen.....la la la la...."Enter PIN or Password" screen appears. For a brief moment my statusbar is shown. The phone appears to be in airplane mode. It does not show the proper time either.

I did a quick Google and it looks like for some reason or another that rom installed encrypted. A factory reset should fix your problem.

Did not work, still there. But Im trying kitkat again. Quantum seems very stable. The wiping internal drive helped with my other issues though.

I have seen this issue before but mostly that encyption popup is displayed in TWRP. I don't recall seeing any one method that ultimately worked for people. If you search for "encrypt" in this Q/A forum, there are 7 pages of results with a lot of inconclusive results or workarounds. I've skimmed the first 3 pages and haven't seen anything that stands out but I've seen similar issue reported by a few others.

Thank you for looking. You would think with an internal memory wipe, factory reset and system wipe it wouldn't be encrypted. Funny thing is...I've never encrypted it either, maybe touchwiz is not for me. Life is telling me something haha.

Erik, did you have any luck going from 4.3 back to 4.1? I'm getting the firmware upgrade error.

Can I do a factory reset with out screwing my phone up? Like from the actual settings?
I don't want to loose root or nothing I just want a clean start the easy Way lol anybody can help?

Not sure if you will lose root. Since you are already rooted the best way to go is use a custom recovery and factory wipe in recovery.

Once you have a custom recovery installed, why would you even want to use the Factory Reset function in the stock rom? You can do everything you need to do with much more flexbility in TWRP.
No idea what happens on the M8 if you do this, but I can tell you that on the Transformer tablets a factory reset from settings wiith CWM or TWRP installed left you in a nasty forced reboot to recovery loop.
Don't do it!
Oh - and no, any kind of wipe of data/cache/dalvik will not affect root. If you wipe /system it will, but then you wouldn't have a rom installed anyway!
Just do the factory wipe in TWRP. That'll wipe everything but /system and /data/media/ where your personal files (pics, videos, docs) live. If you want to get rid of those too format data in TWRP.
Edit: Sorry, didn't read your post correctly. Did you only root with Weaksauce? No S-off, no permanent root, no custom recovery?
In that case it depends where Weaksauce is installed to. I can't remember - Weaksauce didn't survive for long after using firewater, but my guess is, it would be installed to /data. And yes - a factory reset would wipe the app and you would have to install it again.
