Hello Everyone,
It appears that very recently Google finally updated the Google Play Store for the Nexus Player (Android TV in General). I really like the updated UI! It is much more visually appealing and is not redundant like the original was. I also feel it is much easier to navigate and search seems "better". The Play Store icon was updated as well. You can wait for the OTA update if you would like but it could take weeks I'm sure. I actually downloaded and installed the APK directly on my Nexus Player using Google Chrome.
If you have Chrome sideloaded to your Nexus Player, a wireless keyboard, and ES File Explorer, you can install it directly on your Nexus Player. (The APK will show in downloads on ES File Explorer and install just fine) Here is the link to the article and the APK link is at the end of the article. Compliments of Android Police.

Awe Im still waiting on it on mine, i really like the new look seems more stream line.
I noticed it yesterday, must have auto updated.
Still nothing in there as far as new apps. HBO and PBS being the most recent, but since I'm a comcast subscriber, HBO useless for me as well as all the other channel apps.
I was honestly starting to think that Google was abandoning Android TV. It still doesn't even compare to Apple TV as far as app selection. Seeing HBO GO official support added recently and now a Playstore update gives me hope!
I ditched my iPhone 6 for a Nexus 6 and my Apple TV for a Nexus Player. I'm done with Apple / IOS. The phone switch felt like a hella upgrade software and hardware wise. The TV switch honestly felt like a downgrade though...
I don't believe they'd abandon it. Google just partnered with several TV manufacturers to use ATV as their smart TV platform. As the install base for ATV gets higher, the apps will come.

The Play Store doesn't show many apps, but you could access the Play Store through a web browser and see that there are other apps that are compatible with the Nexus Player or Shield TV that you can install on them. Once installed access them through the Sideload Launcher.

Just seen that TVCatchup Android Application is in beta : http://tvcatchup.com/android.html
I would try it, but I'm running ICS
If you find any faults then please report them on our forums by clicking this link: http://forums.tvcatchup.com/forumdisplay.php?71-Tvcatchup-Andriod-Application-Beta-Testing-Feedback
Thanks for the heads up !
Not for me yet as I prefer the mobile site access that gives me the choice to play the stream in MX Video player but worth keeping an eye on.
Negative is that it stops working if you have advert blocking .

nice, thanks Bro
Android 4.1
Hi guys it's Colwal from TVCatchup.com if you are running Android 3.0 + then you will be able to use the ipad.tvcatchup.com streams.
I am running 4.1 Android so I cannot even run our own app, how ironic is that
I have to go through some stages to get the ipad streams working though on my ASUS Transformer in that I have to download the Dolphin Browser and change the useragent to desktop, as for some reason or other since the update you cannot change the useragent in the native browser any more which is slightly frustration.
We have nearly cracked all the problems with the first public beta release and have started working on Android 4.1 and we don't think it will be that long until the release.

If we didn't have adverts then you wouldn't have a service it's a simple as that and I hate them as much as the next person, but there is no alternative at the moment, but we will keep on looking at ideas and we have a few in mind.
Well I know I'm looking forward to it I've used tvcatchup quite alot recently, usually when the other half grabs the remote when the soaps are on.
If you want the ICS update then PM me on the forums.
Just goto m.tvcatchup.com in your browser and you can access the content without an app.
TV Catchup
The app seems to use the inbuilt stream player (very limited options), would be great to choose your preferred streamer or if the app provided it's own player ...
Or perhaps the ability of PVR / pause live TV, like Sky+/Tivo
Hey guys, I wanted to see who all here has picked up a chrome cast and what your thoughts are on it so far?
I really dig it, quick connection and ability to play things with no noticeable degradation or lag. And with HBO Go and Hulu Plus both coming soon it is going to be really nice.
One issue though that I have found is that the previous version of Google Play Movies allowed you to play locally stored videos on your device through the app. With the update to work with Chromecast this option is removed even when trying to do it on your device only so you have to use an external app such as the gallery or MX player etc.
Any word or people working on creating a cracked version of google movies or a work around to allow other apps to chromecast?
Read somewhere that clockworkmod and someone else have done it or are really close. Check Chromecast development
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Koushik Dutta's Aircast
Koushik Dutta is still working on it. Still in beta and will self destruct after 2 days but it is a amazing start

This may be irrelevant now, and if so I apologize for the waste of time, but I have found that if you open the video files in a Chrome tab, they can be cast that way. At times it can be a little inconvenient, but I think the video/audio is pretty good.
It's no longer necessary to sideload Kodi.
The Kodi team has created a google+ testing group. Here's the link to the Alpha testing. . Join the group, become a tester, install from the play store.
I had to uninstall the old version before installing through the play store. Backup before switching.
appreciate the heads up.
its doesn't see my adt-1 to install on
Having this officially on Android TV would be cool...
This is brilliant news, downloaded last night, runs like a dream, unfortunately only at 50Hz (see my other post) so you get juddering and not smooth playback but hopefully google should fix this
Did as mentioned in 1st post. but it is not showing up on the main screen
Downloaded...Kodi thanks
It's been a looong time since I set up (xbmc).....anyone have pointers.....like how to go to repositories. ...etc....thnx
I did this a week ago, i had to stop using it because while using Lollirock (which allows volume control) for some reason it shows both android volume and kodi volume when i raise or lower it which is somewhat annoying.
I looked it up and they did this intentionally so android handles the volume now. I wish they would just get rid of the UI if that is the case.
Installing now
looks like it's not on the play store anymore.

You need to sign up for the beta using the links in OP. It shows up just fine for me.
It is working perfectly here
should i be able to install the beta version as per https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/101953908499318548671 on my nexus player?
i signed up to the beta, agreed, got the link and used it to install on my nexus player.
the play store page now says it's installed, but there is nothing on my nexus player.

Sounds to me like you've run out of available space on your Nexus Player. If you try to install an app to your NP from the Play Store via a PC, the PC version of the Play Store isn't technically "local" to your Nexus Player, therefore it has no idea how much available space your NP may/may not have. All it does is process your installation request. Whether or not it REALLLYY is installed or not, the Play Store via PC isn't quite that intelligent yet and has no clue.
I've actually had this same thing happen to me several different times as well. Each time I was out of space and didn't realize it beforehand. Check to see if that may be the problem. :good:
nope, i had around 2GB free.
it eventually appeared on the nexus player about 1 hour later after i clicked install.
having the same problem with ES File Explorer, but as of yet that still hasn't appeared on the nexus player, and i selected to install it around the same time as kodi.
Installed a few days ago on my Nexus 10, works fine. Waiting for my box I ordered from Amazon.
So the unit is a power house no doubt. But I have found it to be very lacking and frustrating when it comes to available streaming media apps.
First it had to update to get Netflix. Then in order to get Crunchyroll I had to side load it from my PC. The option to sideload things like Amazon Instant Video, HBO GO, Disney XD (me and the kids got to get our Rebels) either aren't there or this device is listed as incompatable even after I have set it to allow "Unknown Sources". I did find an apk for AIV here on XDA but haven't installed it yet. Also, when you do get apps installed via apk they don't show on the main screen and there is no option to add it. You have to go through 3 or 4 screens to find it. Does any one have any advice for getting these streaming services on this box and making it less frustrating to use? Thanks
The store only shows apps that are leanback apps but if you go to the store on a browser you can install most apps to your shield from there and use a sideload launcher to launch them on the shield. Not every app works with a controller but i've had good luck for the most part.
I did try doing it via a browser, Chrome even, and they still do not install. I also have the remote for it and that works.
No worries. I've decided to return it anyway. Will just wait for Roku 4 or maybe the next version of Nexus TV.
Thanks
Im a little disappointed too but what else do you expect from google smdh
I'm not dissapointed at all. This is probably the new benchmark that all future android devices will be measured against. I accept that the play store is limited because it has only been out for about 6 weeks and this device is a little more work right now. But it will get better, I'm sure.
Go ahead and get that next generation roku, and i hope you can enjoy that locked-down experience. I know I wouldnt like it.
It's new, apps and streaming services will be added as time goes on. Roku is the king of streaming channels, but no Kodi, essentially no games, locked down, and it's future doesn't look very bright unless they jump on the Android bandwagon.
Amazon FireTV is a better option, a bit more locked down than nSATV/AndroidTV, but as it's been out longer than Android TV it does support more streaming apps as well as a fairly decent selection of casual games. I'd say it's probably the best option today if nothing else was ever released for any device ever.
nVidia Shield Android TV has the best hardware of any microconsole streaming device, and IMHO AndroidTV holds the most promise of the OS options. It's new but off to a good start. I can understand being disappointed, but maybe expectations area bit unrealistic. Patience, give it some time. The exception of course is games. There really are no other options for using a streaming media microconsole to replace a dedicated gaming console, and for some people this device can do just that.
Afternoon all,
Just looking for a bit of advice, I've recently bought a MXQ Android TV Box which I hoped to use on our main tv for Amazon Prime Video. I've installed the apk from the amazon website and logged into my account, I can see all the tv and films on offer although when I click to play the file I get the usual orange circle and then the screen goes black and I get redirected back to the choose a video. Seems to work file on my Samsung Tablet and Justop windows mini pc.
Any tried Amazon videos with one of these recently? Any help would be great.
Cheers
Dave
Looks like the trailers are working fine
I have had similar issues with the recent versions of the Amazon video apps. I began to think they just want their fire TV to dominate the tv. I now use a older version of their app side loaded from my 6 year old Sony goggle tv blue ray player which i never update.. It basically gives the Web site for the interface but at least it works. You might use yor Web browser and save the amazon video page as a bookmark on your desktop.

Tried dolphin, Firefox & Chrome to play the videos with no luck on the website. Same as you now though I found an old apk and installed that which plays the videos from the website. ?
I too have the same problem with Amazon prime video on my MXQ. Did anyone find any solution
Same here
Any news about that, i have the same issue, the app installe dcorectly, but when i run the stream .. it says that the app encounted some error.
@RG GEIGER , @DaveG46
What version of the old apk did you find?
Sorry @neffly27 I've since switched to the fire TV cube which has its own set of limitations but happy so far. Anyway I'm not sure of the version of the app I used on my mx box but it was years ago from the original goggle tv on a Sony DVD player.
