I have an A9, AMA - HTC One A9

Hi everyone,
Got an HTC One A9 here that I'm in the process of writing about. Let me know if you have questions.
Below are some camera samples

is the theme store any different in it? or new default themes at all.

I think the theme store is exactly the same.

Is there an option for ambient display (for notifications) like the Nexus phones and Moto X?

There is not, unfortunately.

How are the speakers with the lack of Boomsound? Is there a notification LED too?

There is a notification light! And it's pretty good too, unlike the M7/M8/M9. The speakers are equivalent to the iPhone, so good, but not SUPER powerful.

How is the battery life? What is your opinion of this versus the Nexus 5X / other relatively small android phones?

How does Sense 7.0_g compare to regular Sense 7.0? I've read that 7.0_g is more stripped down, but the only difference aside from some apps being left out is the multi-tasking screen and the pull-down notification tray. Any other glaring differences you notice?
What I'm most curious about is gapless playback, since HTC phones have been pretty awful at this previously. Specifically, (and obviously you can't test this if you don't have any gapless albums,) does Google Play Music do gapless playback properly?

Battery life is good but not stellar. I don't have a Nexus 5X, but I do have basically everything else, and yeah, you have to keep it topped up a little more diligently. But it's far, far better than the Galaxy S6.
As far as Sense 7.0g goes, it's very light. HTC took the right things out, in my opinion.

How is the gaming performance (if u played any)? I usually play more casual games such as Clash of Clans and SimCity Build it.

Really? They stripped out ambient display? That's one of the key new features from Lollipop!
[edit] this youtuber indicates that ambient display is available.

I played Modern Combat 5: and Monument Valley, and both played just fine. The only time the phone got really warm was when I was fast charging and updating at the same time.

Does the screen support high sensitivity touch (i.e. does it work when I'm wearing gloves)? Also how does one typically enable ambient display on Android? Surely any phone with an AMOLED screen should support this. I'm coming from a Lumia 925 and hoping that this HTC will be my next device.

There is glove mode! If someone can tell me how one is supposed to enable ambient display, but I don't say it.

I watched a youtube video which compares the old sense with new sense 7. As I can see, HTC Music, HTC Car apps are gone now which were my favorite. Could you check in playstore if there is way to install them? Also, what all the sense apps missing in the new sense?

HTC Sense 6 apps are available as apks.. So you should be able to install them externally.

I wonder if they will update/optimize these apps to Marshmellow . Perhaps once M9 gets updated we will get a clearer picture.

I don't think these apps work in A9. The phone need to have proper resource files to run these apps and these can be installed only at system/ also, root needed to access /system.

Looking to get an HTC Touch Pro, touchflo question

I was wondering. I am an ex-Tytn II owner and I was aggrevated on how slow the phone was.
Is the HTC Touch Pro much faster now? Like Touch Flo is it similar to speed as the IPhone?
I am worried about getting the HTC Touch Pro to find out its slow/sluggish.

With the newer ROMs and tweaks, it's very fast. There's no huge lag like when it first came out, you'll be happy with it.
I would say the speed is much improved but not what it should be. I would say it is comparable to my Iphone 3G 90% of the time.
I have to ask myself... currently I use SPB Mobile Shell and I love the Dial Tab, which offers two-touch dialing of eleven most-used contacts. Is the contacts system in TouchFlo3D at all as convenient and quick?
Thanks.

Is it only in certain applications that this 10% lag occurs?
Actually is there a video showing the phone in action with the updated Rom? i saw the video by wired and it looks sluggish in that video. thats not with the newest rom is it?

[Q] List of things Nexus S doesnt have that the Galaxy S does have?

Galaxy S has:
Removeable SD Card
Ability to watch movies without converting etc
Can use 3.5 jack to see movies etc on TV - not sure if the nexus s can do this or not
Bluetooth 3.0 - But its better that it has 2.1 so you can use wiimote
Thats all I can think of off the top of my head if anyone has any other things id like to know.

13GB SD card internal is more than enough for most people.
between all the streaming apps coming, and the apps on the market for playing divx, it shouldn't be an issue.
3.5 tv out should work, if not then most likely someone will write an app, or code a stock rom that includes the function.
meh. 3.0 is alright, but as you said, no wiimote and it has other issues as well.

SIM-lock and crapware?
much better video camera, 720p and suport for various codecs
I'm willing to bet the actual camera sensor in the Nexus S is identical to the Galaxy's. From pictures, the aperture looks the same, and also reviews of the Nexus S have noted how well the low light performance is, which is similar on the Galaxy S. I'm quite certain the lack of 720p is merely a software limitation rather than hardware being different... but of course this is all speculation.

it seems that still pictures are decent enough but video samples are terrible, for example this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDDn-MXzd3U in the background i truly cant tell whats on the video. There are many more examples on you tube, I hope they can fix it.
All "HD" video shot with cameraphones is terrible anyway. You're better off shooting in 480p.

Have you seen the Vibrant's video capabilities? I highly doubt it based on your comment. While the pics on it are average, the video it takes is EXTREMELY good.
I bet the lower capability video camera on the S is due to the lack of a SD slot.

yeah, i forgot to ask. I didnt see swype in any of the review. Is it possible that they even took that out?
What do you mean "took it out"? Swype has never been a part of Android, it is a carrier/manufacturer add-on.
There was a video review that showed what writing options the Ns came with, and Swype was not one of them - in fact, it only had Android Keyboard. Forgot which video.
BTW, what's the deal with Bluetooth 3.0 and the Wiimote? What happens, it prevents the Wiimote from working? I've never heard of this.
Third-party apps for WiiMote pairing do not work with Bluetooth 3.0 (or some skins, such as HTC Sense)

[Q] ChaCha vs. Xperia Mini Pro

Hello!
Here the price to extend 1yr contract is the same for ChaCha & Xperia Mini Pro.
The latter might be a bit better in specs, but it's plagued with that 'electrostatic noise' problem which (probably) won't be solved just by software update.
I do not care much about multimedia stuff, games, GPS...mostly need good phone, capable email client (probably we'd install K9), some Skype voip calls etc.
No need for Facebook & Twitter...
What do you suggest: to wait a bit to see what effect might software update have on noise problem in Xperia or to jump straight to ChaCha?

Well what I can tell is that I've had a Xperia x10 Mini Pro (Which probably is much in the same style) and typing on it was far from being a pleasure. I have heard good things about the keyboard on the chacha, but I can't confirm since I've never used the phone.
If really all you want to is skype voice calls and emailing I'd actually recommend a Nokia or WinMO phone with a hardware keyboard, for typing on them will sure be easier. And you also could, if you prefer android, see if you can afford a HTC Desire Z or Motorola Droid/Milestone 1/2/3.

Heh, I can say that in the beginning I was thinking about Nokia E5.
As far as WinMO, I'm avoiding 'em (similarly to Apple stuff) just on the principle.
Moreover, I'd like to able to sync my contacts/phonebook data with Linux desktop machine.

The 'sliding' mechanism on Desire Z does not look convincing to me and the latter is not available here...Moreover, they're much more expensive.
Thank you for your input.

yay, that s it.
I can confirm this, Chacha has a far better keyboard. It also feels much more solid.
I'm no user of sliding physical keyboard because those are easy breakable so I would not buy an Xperia Mini Pro.
The resolution of the ChaCha is a little bit higher and that its an advantage in watching YouTube videos, playing games or browsing webpages with plenty of static images.
The stock rom, Gingerbread 2.3.3, it's ok but with the HTC Sense, is painful. You don't get enough free space in internal storage for instaling apps. In mine I have ~ 40 apps and the critical memory warning pops up every day. Writing an email or an SMS it's pleasing. The space withing the keys makes writing very natural. About gaming and stuff, I can tell you that Fruit Ninja and Angry birds are working great.
Wi-fi and cell network signal are good, no problem with bluetooth accesories like handsfree and the camera does the job.
You probably use the phone the same as I do. The games I play are Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds, and they run smoothly. The keyboard is totally awesome, better than any sliding-keyboard phone.
Chacha is better
I think chacha is better. The xperia has a rather small screen, which is not comfortable to type on the screen. But when you use keyboard, it is rather large~

Just received mine today
Hi davidayling,
I just received mine today (from: hongkongeek[dot].com since they promised to refund customs and VAT); excellent and quick service btw!
This is the first time I bought one of these china phones; encouraged by the many and mostly positive reports...
About the Phone:
+ To me it does look and feel just like the high quality brand phones
+ NOT A SINGLE CHINA APP!!! Just vanilla 4.2.1 - very good performance; smooth animations, transitions
+ 3800 mah battery - though I'm not sure if it really will deliver that much energy - but it says 3.800 on the label at least
+ Display (likely really an IPS): bright (even outside), wide viewing angle - very close to the front glass; comes very close to Samsung S3 amoled
+ 2nd battery included; additional flip cover included
+ Pen looks like a real S-Pen - no softtip; anyway the capacitative finger-touch recognition is not stopped when using the pen; so that can cause inconvenience when using it
+ GREAT (!) web browsing experience: 5,7" & good performance with JS-rich web-apps (like groupware web-clients)
+ Dual-SIM (with dual standby); however just one line can be used at the same time; and only one is WCDMA capable.
+ Worked on two carrier networks instantly
- no compass; well my last phone had one; I'm not sure if I really need one
- 220g = 170g phone + 50g battery - it's not a feather...
I am actually planning to flash CWM & root it; also I haven't tried out the GPS yet - So I'll be back regarding this later.
Many greet's from the hights of the austrian alps!

Hi, the pen has no specific functionality; it's basically useful for exact "clicking" in the browser for example, or drawing sketches...

Hi everyone,
Here are some Pictures of the camera to see it's quality... took them in the 12mpix mode - camera and gallery work very quickly even with pics that large... not sure if the image size is reduced by the forum software.
And yes...
... we still have snow on the mountains, the strawberries are still green and my chihuahua enjoys the sun...
Also I can report that the battery is really as strong as expected, after 3 cycles of complete drain and recharging the indicator works correctly. Even when using it extensively (frequent webbrowsing, phonecalls of a regular business day) it reliably carries me through the day... the weekend left me with 25 % after two days. Standy with wlan on does not consume considerably much... great!
As allready said, it's easily rootable. Also I'm using the apex-launcher so I could increase the number of icons on the homescreens to 5x8, increase the number of screens to 9... it's a pleasure!

i have the star n9599 since few days. It works great, also bluetooth and usb service is better for me than galaxy s3 (in my bmw the star works very well, S3 works not good).
Display: the brightness is good, the black not so good; No crash, a little bit heavy but a very good battery.
The (s)pen is not so good, too much noise when you write on the screen and i haven't find a good app for note with the pen.
Rooted in few minutes.
I only have 2 problems: i can't update maps app (it seem play store can't install in the original path, i have also uninstalled previous version but the problem remains.
The second one is that i can't see facebook photos (or dropbox photos) in the stock gallery app (any idea?)
The settings app doesn't seem to be complete.
sorry for my bad english
Hi,
Regarding maps - i had this with google search... probably caused by inserting an sd card. I guess it is related to the default data location changing after inserting an sd card. So maybe you could try to set the default saving location to the internal memory in the system settings, then update, and reset the default location to sd-card again.
Let us know, if this helped, pls.

the only thing im afraid about is because I heard STAR and some chinese branded phones are unreliable and may suddenly stop work one day.. is it true? or STAR is a reliable company?
I saw it being sold for 213$ for the mtk 6589T version..so.. overall, should I get this phone? how is its size compared to the note 2 ? is it much larger? or about the same? will it be hard to grip it? I mean it's 5.7.. even the note is 5.5 lol

[Q] Scrolling Lag

Hi,
I bought yesterday my galaxy s6. Everything was going fine, the new touchwiz looks really beaultifull, the screen was the best display I ever seen, the fingerprint sensor works great, etc.
Nevertheless, i noticed a stuttering/scrolling lag in almost every app. For example: scrolling up and down on whatsapp chats stutters every time. It is not smooth as my old iphone 5. On instagram, facebook, contacts, playstore, occurs the same problem... they are not heavy apps, I can not really understand why it is happening. It is bothering me and I will come back to apple if this problems persists.
Anyone have an idea about how to make it work perfectly as a gadget called "the next big thing" and that costs US$ 800 should?
I'm thinking in try to root and install a debloated room, but I will probably lost my warratie if I do this
Hey so while playing with some settings to try and prevent my apps from being killed so aggressively, I noticed that by limiting the amount of background process you can limit the amount of stutter. I have it set to "at most 4 processes" and I've noticed a vast improvement in the stuttering in apps. Just enable developer options and scroll all the way to the bottom and it should be there. Hope that helps!

1.Turn off power saving mode it causes glitches
2. Iphones have smoother scrolls than android becoz of optimisation of ui
Sent from my SM-G920I using XDA Free mobile app
in general, iphones are smoother in 3rd party apps, because of the optimization, and in facebook if you give it a couple of seconds to make it load everything then it wont lag or stutter, in twitter it does stutter......in contacts app there is no lag at all.....i am using the phone for about two and a half weeks.....
Hi everyone! I tried all the solutions that you mentioned... yesterday I tried many configurations and I realized that the main cause for the scrolling lag seems to be the google apps... I reset the phone 3 times and in my last try I installed whatsapp, configurated my e-mails, instagram and facebook was ok. But when I installed the play store, everything start to have lag/stutter.
Does anyone also noticed this?
It is important to mention that, even when the system was "good", when I was scrolling, I realized a slight stutter. It is really hard to accept that android will never be smooth as iOS. This galaxy s6 has a much much better specifications than apple's phone costs the same price.

I think this issue was discussed before here on XDA. If you do a search, you might be able to find a fix to your problem.

I tried to find a solution via xda and other forums and didn't the solution. I understood that this stutter is caused by the UI of Android, which loads the information different from in iOS. However, I didn't find any solution as you mentioned. Could you please post the link?

You should stop comparing android and ios, what ios does is loads everything first then displays and android does both at the same time, ios has too much optimisation to solve each and every smallest issue and they have enough time too as they have only 2 devices a year , though when you get a highly functional and customizable UI like android some stutter is understood in fact we users dont even notice it. Both ios and android are made differently they funtion differently and are made to please different types of customers android focuses more on funtions and features which are at much higher level than ios! Let me give you an example , even if you buy one of the best laptops you will still find stutter because the UI is too complex to work smoothly on the level of ios! If you know a little about coding you would have an idea that smaller the code smoother the program is and thats what ios does plus it has optimisation. My advice would be you would get used to it just ignore it and you will stop even noticing it plus you wpuld admire theore functional andrpid UI!

And they scroll much slower / more limited. Try to scroll through a long list or webpage with just one or two swipes - it's almost impossible on iOS because there seems to be a hard limit how far you can go with one swipe. This can be really annoying in daily usage if you want to get to the bottom of something, but also means that it has to load less content at once which makes it look smoother.

So the android will never be smooth as iOS? It's really hard to understand the reason. For example, windows phones is smooth as iOS and was made to work with several hardwares.
There is any way or app that could help the scrolling by slowing down as you told?

See stutter is only seen in 3rd party apps which are made by other developers and not google ,you wont see them in preloaded apps,so it would be wrong to blame android for that and there is no connection to hardware, windows again is less complicated than android and hence better smoothness so the best would be ignore it you wont even notice after a few days !

Found it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/help/scrolling-performance-t3090271
I'll never stop comparing android with ios.
My old galaxy s4 (FlexOs rom) was as smooth as my girlfriends iphone 5, and faster opening apps.
unfortunately wifi and bluetooth stopped working after 2 years
So, what I did?
I bought the new galaxy s6 hopping it was smoother than galaxy s4.
Everything is really faster. But scrolling is driving me crazy.
I Don't care if both ios and android are made differently and function differently and are made to please different types of customers.
I could scroll with s4 and I can't anymore with s6.
Its not true that Android never became smooth as IOS.
I switched from Nexus 5 to S6 and its a Samsung Problem. My Nexus 5 ist smooth all the Time! On Play Store and Facebook.... I compared with Iphone 6 and its really Smooth. Xperia z3 ist near on Nexus 5 smoothnes. Try it by yourself you will see.
Maybe Samsung have to ask Sony how to make the you UI smooth as Xperia UI in my Opinion.
Totally agree, it's Samsung causing the stutter.
My girlfriend has Xperia Z3 Compact and it runs smooth.
S6 stutters a great deal compared to her Z3 and especially my Nexus 5.
I still use the Nexus 5 although the S6 has a better camera, display and sound.
Stock android fully optimized for S6 (option to use Samsung camera app) is what I'm looking for, any tips?
