If you convert Hevc in to mp4, your device may support playback with hardware and performance will be smooth.
It work with my galaxy-s4. You add a custom patch and you put it on the decoder
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
MP4 = container format, and container has no direct bearing on playback performance. The encode of the video stream is independent of the container format.
Hardware acceleration depends on what codec the video is encoded in; currently no devices have hardware HEVC support yet.
The Galaxy S4 plays HEVC with software decoding; there's no hardware acceleration.

I beg to differ. The Samsung Galaxy Note5 (and other devices with Exynos 7420) can play HEVC encoded files with HW acceleration. See screenshot here: goo.gl/0G3hcx
However, Exynos 7420 does not support HW acceleration of Hi10P encoded HEVC files.

Well now, that's a recent development; the Note 5 only came out in August 2015. Everything else before this point though would not support HW HEVC.
I don't foresee the main10 profile of HEVC being hardware supported in the near future; one reason of which is that the standards setters haven't agreed if the "HEVC supported" accreditation for devices will also require main10 support.

Here's the specification of the Snapdragon 820:
Multimedia
• 10-bit 4K decode
• 1080p240 FPS decode
• 4K HEVC video at 60FPS with 10-bit color
• Simultaneous 1080p30+1080p30 inbound/outbound
• WCD9335 audio codec
• Hi-Fi 24bit/192kHz FLAC playback
What's not clear is whether the 10-bit it refers to is Main10 or Hi10. Probably devices using the 820 will appear on the 2nd quarter of next year.

There are already some SOCs which can decode the h265. This just indicates the ability of the chip.
The issue is that whether the OEM will implement the support or not. OEM may need to pay for additional licensing fees to use the h265 decoding. That's why many OEMs hasn't implemented the native support for h265.

What KT said; the OEMs are fighting to have Main10 support dropped from the minimum standard required for the "HEVC Supported" certification; I hope they don't win.

Don´t know about that.
I'm able to play 1080p anime that has ac3 audio, .ass subtitles, in an mkv container and the video track is in h264. I'm able to play it with MK Player. This device handles it like a champ. No lag here!

It goes smooth with RockPlayer.
+1. I'm getting also slow playback with some video files (not only mkv) if HW activated with DICE or MX Player. Software Player is working like a charm on the other hand... I don't know if this is normal behaviour... In fact we don't have "hardware" to help decoding, have we?
@other people in this thread: note that he's asking about hardware decoding... You're all reporting smooth playback, but you don't specify if you use hardware decoding.
bye!

BTW, I can't play that "birds" file smoothly with my HTC One S. Tried Dice and MX Players, Software and Hardware.
I don't think our phone can handle 40 Mbps MKV smooth... No way.

Are you sure? I can't... Hardware player throws an error (something about system player can't play that file)... and software player is slow as DICE and MX... ¿¿¿???
Was watching a .mkv file with MX Player and it looked not that great. For what ever reason Mx Player wasn't supporting H/W Accelaration for this particular video. So i tried another player (BS Player) and the H/W Accelaration worked flawless and the video looked nicer =)
I was able to watch the birds video on mobo player without any perceived lag. From what I could tell, it was using HW acceleration by default, but I can't confirm that it was actually doing so.
quick question does your htc one s heat up when you watch those videos like 720p or 1080p?

Yup. Try with RockPlayer…
And, as asked, I tested by hardware… software just can't handle that.
I don't understand then... There's no config involved here, so I just can't understand why we can't play that file and you don't see an problem... ¿?

Do you use stock ROM, or a cooked one?
Stock…
Try download again, maybe the file is corrupted.
If it's playable in software mode I don't think it's corrupted... But I'll try anyway.

I had a copy of The Boondock Saints that had AC3 audio and the audio wouldn't play.
That doesn't answer the HW question but it might have just been the copy I "borrowed".

Not the case I think, as I'm still with (branded) 1.53.(75).3. But definitelly it has something to do with versions, as you've seen.
bye!
Well before I had a older version: 1.53.401.2.
Then we could conclude that from version 1.53.xx.3 (mine), we've got this problem... ¿?
Third number is a rom id (401 is no branded, 75 corresponds to Orange Spain branded), so it doesn't care.
Hey, i had a problem with the dts codec but i installed the custom codec from the forum successfully. The problem is, that the video can only be rendered by h/w, but there is still no sound (i have checked the s/w audio). with s/w the video can not be played and i have read in the forum that the h/w + mode works in this case. But if i enable h/w +, every video ( including the ones with ac3) doesnt work. it says the video can not be played. how do i get the h/w + working?
Thanks for your help

If the video plays well in HW mode & you are not getting audio with custom codec, SW audio means custom codec is not loded properly.
Is it showing the codec path under custom codec?
yes it is and there was no error with loading the custom codec

ok. but with h/w and s/w audio it doesnt work for dts movies. what can be the problem?
Are you getting video without problem?
Is there any toast msg like unsupported audio codec?
the .mkv movies with ac3 codec runs with sound and without problems.

And audio can be played with custom codec uploaded here.
Please try with latest custom codec. your custom looks like old one which is not compatible with latest MX Player.
i have installed the custom codec yesterday from the forum. it should be actually. it could be another problem on my android system. maybe from the new 4.4.2 update for my note N8010 ?

Can you post the screenshot of extended properties (enable more options on Properties)?
How many subtitles are listed in the subtitle pop up window?
Have tried after unchecking the "Enable Embedded subtitles" in Settings 》 Subtitles ?
If It's still not working uncheck "Enable Subtitles" option too. If you are still getting means subtitle is hard encoded to video frame. In that case it can't be disabled.
Regarding S/W decoder issue, your cpu amlogic m805 is not a powerful one. Since S/W decoder uses the cpu to decode, it needs powerful cpu. So,there will be lagging depends upon the video quality

Well, VXG Video Player supports really all video/audio formats and containers. For example, MX Player doesn't. Also we have unique stream record and file trim feature.
Wow, we have reached 1 Million of installs! Thank you!
We are currently prepairing new version with Marshmallow support and few new features. Also we are always open for your ideas and feedback!
It is great! Congratulations.
Just Player is a video player based on the ExoPlayer library/framework from Google. Just Player is fairly trivial right now - most work is done by ExoPlayer and I have just added few actions and controls here and there. The whole app is basically just a single screen with an option to load video - no library view or application settings.
Why?
Compensation for Bluetooth audio lag. ExoPlayer does that automatically, plays video in sync with audio.
All special audio formats. Thanks to FFmpeg, ExoPlayer can handle even special formats like AC-3, E-AC-3, DTS, DTS-HD, TrueHDetc.
Free / open source
(Clean, uncluttered GUI)
I wasn't able to find any video player satisfying all above needs. I personally use nPlayer which does well with both Bluetooth and audio codecs. Another competitor to Just Player is SimplePlayer (also ExoPlayer based) though Just Player tries making the UI easier.
I also found out that VLC isn't able to play HDR videos properly (colors are washed out) or that MX Player isn't that able to play 4K 60 FPS HDR video without shuttering (even on Snapdragon 855 / OnePlus 7). Tested with "The World in HDR" video from Kodi Samples. This Player plays it just fine.
Supported formats
Audio: Vorbis, Opus, FLAC, ALAC, PCM/WAVE (μ-law, A-law), MP1, MP2, MP3, AMR (NB, WB), AAC (LC, ELD, HE; xHE on Android 9+), AC-3, E-AC-3, DTS, DTS-HD, TrueHD
Video: H.263, H.264 AVC (Baseline Profile; Main Profile on Android 6+), H.265 HEVC, MPEG-4 SP, VP8, VP9, AV1
Containers: MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, Ogg, MPEG-TS, MPEG-PS, FLV, AVI ()
Subtitles: SRT, SSA, ASS, TTML, VTT, DVB
HDR (HDR10+ and Dolby Vision) video playback on compatible/supported hardware.

What's next
It's amazing to me that in just a few hours of work and few hundreds lines of code it is possible to create a video player that I actually can use. I probably won't be adding support for features that are too big for this little player - like playlists, media library etc. but I should probably be able to improve things like subtitles (it should be easy with ExoPlayer). So just let me know what do you think.
The app got suspended on Google Play for listing compatible subtitle formats.
Check the link - it's ironic because I reused the description from a Google library (for playing videos) and this is what caused the suspension.
EDIT: Fortunately the app was reinstated few hours later.
Great app, especially for the feature i am asking about:
There is a "timeshift" if i access certain free TV-Streams in Germany. The only program for the PC is a version of KMPlayer, which -and that's different- starts the stream up to -2hours* from now w/o the option to seek up to the "live feed" (i could save the stream-starting in the past or speed up the play speed but it's no fun). Just Player can seek to any point from -2hours* to the live feed.
Is that included by accident or on purpose, if so what is the name of that feature or how does it work - is there a "proxy mechanism" involved? D
No other player (i dare to say i know some) on Android or PC beside the 2 mentioned have that feature...and i would like to seek to any time* on the PC.
* the time to look into the past varies...but the last 2 hours is mostly true.
Example - probably geo-blocked: https://derste247livede.akamaized.net/hls/live/658317/daserste_de/master_1280p_3328.m3u8
i tried to find international streams but they go back 1Minte max.
Any insight would be appreciated
@ks123_reloaded This player uses ExoPlayer which is a library from Google, primarily intended for integrating/creating streaming apps on Android & TV. They probably care a lot about media consumption and supporting the ecosystem as a whole so they really integrate the streaming well. The feature you are asking about is probably something like this: https://github.com/google/ExoPlayer/issues/87

sounds like it. Thx
Now my quest for finding the PC version can go on
Maybe I didn’t understand something, but E-AC-3 and DTS formats are not played on Ugoos X3 pro and Mecool KM6 delux (silence), but on MI Box S, which has a DTS license, everything is in order. So E-AC-3 and DTS can only be played with hardware codecs? Or is there some settings? Vimu plays everything on all devices...

If the connected device doesn't have E-AC3 or DTS capability, it should fallback to the FFmpeg decoder. This is managed (default behavior) by ExoPlayer so I suspect it's some device specific issue (reporting/detecting wrong capabilities). Currently there's no setting for that but based on the feedback, I will be adding that.

Do we have the list of the compatible devices?
For instance are Samsung Galaxy S20 FE compatible? or is it just devices such as nVidia Shield?

Most latest phones have HDR displays, so does S20 FE - you can check here: https://m.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s20_fe-10428.php
Only Dolby Vision is limited to very few devices.
I just wanted to say that Just Player is the ONLY player i could find as an android TV app on my Sony X900H TV that can play Dolby Vision and some other HDR movie files properly off a USB drive connected directly to my TV. The native player, VLC, Nova player, MX player, none worked ! Plex did work but i had to stream from my PC and it stuttered badly.
So Just Player has been a lifesaver It is amazing and so far plays EVERYTHING !
Not asking to get too fancy, but maybe a slightly nicer interface when navigating your drive to select files would be nice.
I have a request for this app: Can you the developer of this app please add an indicator in the video player that shows when a HDR video is actually playing?
When i'm playing a HDR video with the Samsung Video player on my Galaxy Z Fold 3, then it shows a HDR logo in front of the video name.
Adding this would be awesome .
Hello, thank you to the developer for this wonderful video player that I use on a shield pro 2019.
I don't know if it's possible but I will have 2 recommendations.
Movies in 23.976 fps switch well in 23.976hz but movies in 24 fps and 25 fps switch respectively in 120hz and 50hz for me. Would it be possible to change that?
Also, concerning the resolution, would it be possible to create an option to automatically switch the screen to the original resolution of the films?
Thank you very much and sorry for my English :s
