At the moment the Gear will not work with Marsmallow.

Yeah hasn't been able to stay connected to Marshmallow phones since October 12. Have to do a reset of S2 every time they go out of range of each other.
A user on Android Central with a Nexus 6 on Marshmallow is reporting that there is a firmware update under About Gear in the Gear app that has fixed the Bluetooth connection issue. I don't have my S2 with me at the moment, so anyone with a Marshmallow phone should check for the Firmware. Please let us know if you're successful in repeatedly reconnecting without having to do a reset every time you go out of range. Thanks!
Just got my Gear S2 updated firmware applied last night and it fixes the issue with the need to reset the device when you loose bluetooth connection. All they need to do for me now is find a way to update the Gear apps on the playstore to accept my Nexus 5X as a legit device so I don't have to sideload it. Things are really looking up.

I'm gonna assume that you've already checked the Play Store again after installing the firmware update, so it is strange that they haven't updated the Gear app on the Play Store.
I can confirm that I have repeatedly been able reconnect my S2 to my Nexus 5 on Marshmallow after I installed the S2 firmware update that was available in the USA in the Gear app under the About Gear settings. I went from firmware version R720XXU2AOIL to R720XXU2AOJ3. I found that even after installing the firmware, I had to do one Light Reset on the S2 before the S2 would reconnect.
So far so good. Have intentionally gone out of range 6 times and reconnected all 6 times. Will report back if situation changes.

The app from play store, from 12th oct (current version that i can see at play store), is not compatible with my phone, nexus 5X, so, i cannot install it.
if the app is not compatible with my phone is for android 6. A firmware update without this app is for nothing

Weird. I'm using a Nexus 5, and maybe because I installed it prior to upgrading my phone to Marshmallow I have access to the Gear app. I can send you the apk if you don't have it. It downloads the Gear Plugin and the Samsung Accessory Service apps, and I couldn't back up those apks (or I don't know how to), so I can't provide those two, but perhaps if you have the Gear apk, it'll trigger downloading those two like it did for me. No idea why the app is compatible with a Nexus 5, but not a 5X.

and.... if is not available for nexus 5x, is for android 6? so, is not compatible with it?
i will wait to buy it, i bought it 3 days ago, and returned it.....

since Samsung has actually released a firmware update that fixed (so far) the Bluetooth connection issue, I think they will update the Gear app, momentarily. Also, they never certified the 5X or the 6P, since they are brand new. I think this will be sorted out soon enough.
Oh, and there are three apks, not two. Two at first, but they added the Samsung Accessory Service apk afterwards.
yes, 3 files, i have donwload all of them all running...... i will try to test it before buy the watch
Ok, let´s go
I went to a Samsung store, try with a gear s2.
bluetooth pair ok, no problem, like always. From phone or from app
But, when you try to connect from app (i installed 3 apks)... nothing, no way.

I have had some limited success installing apps. I got the sleep one to install (b4 they took it off the market) and a clockface. But any others I try just download and give me the app failed to install. (news feeder and the 360 one) everything else is working on My gear 2. Not a huge deal now as I am just testing it out, there are no good apps out yet. But I was trying to get it straight before the avalache of awesome apps starting coming in im sure here real shortly right. Anyone had similar issues?
I never had the gear 1 or followed it, how long before we got root and cool support/apps for it. anyone know? Of course this being one of the first Tizen products I would expect it to take longer.

It works for me. Thanks alot.
I have tried several times to update Google Play Store to v5.0 by tapping on the version in settings on my Sprint GS5, but it says it is up to date at veriosn 4.8.20. Is this specific to the S5? Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't know, I always update early through apkmirror, however, Samsung is not and can not be blocking Play Store updates. It's up to Google for that decision and it just hasn't been pushed to your device yet.

Strange, isn't it?
I have Sony Xperia Z1 and I got the latest update of Play Store 5.0.31, but I needed to restore factory settings immediately. Now, I am stuck on 4.8.20 version too. I'm tapping on the build number to force update, but it tells me it's up to date. I don't wanted to side-load the apk.
Anyone had this problem? Thanks!
Same here, brand new S5 and play store stuck on 4.8.20
I have the same issue. I got 5 before a factory reset. After i made a factory reset the version sis 4.8.20 and it is no updated to 5
So, if we side-load the apk, will the future updates install automatically or we need to side-load them too?
I'm still waiting though...
I've sideloaded apps like the play store before and future updates still come through.
So, should we wait or sideload them?
I have always waited for any updates for my phone, I'm eager to have them, but I'll wait.

Sideload. Always Sideload from a trusted source like apkmirror. They're signed by Google and can't be tampered with.

If my Samsung Gear S2 gets disconnected from my Nexus 6P at all, I have to do a light reset and reestablish bluetooth connection with phone. I have tried updating the Gear Manager app, but I get "Unable to update new software. Device is encrypted. Decrypt?" It sends me to my security settings, but everything I have tried won't make it work.
Any suggestions???
I fixed this. Reset watch. Pair the watch to a decrypted phone, do the update, reset the watch, pair it back to your phone. Problem 100% solved.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Ran into the exact same issue today after purchasing a Gear S2 and pairing it with my 6P. Walked away from my phone, came back, and realized the watch hadn't re-paired with it. After doing some Googling, this is the only mention of it I've found, so thanks for posting it and reassuring me that I'm not crazy.
Unfortunately, I don't want to decrypt my 6P yet, so it looks like I'll be returning the watch. That sucks because I liked it much more than the new 360 and other Android Wear devices. Looks like I'm headed back to using my Pebble Time.
Thanks for penalizing those of us that don't want to use your phones but like this watch, Samsung! /s
*edit* So after doing some more digging, it seems the update I can't take on my 6P for the watch (since it prompts you to decrypt the phone), fixes this issue. Apparently, if you can connect the watch to another, unencrypted phone, then you can take the update and re-pair with the 6P and the problem should be fixed.

It works fully until the watch and phone are disconnected (either by getting out of range of each other or by disconnecting them intentionally). Once that happens, you have to reset the watch and set it up again. You have to do this every single time they disconnect.
From what I've read, the latest update to the watch fixes this, but I don't have a phone that's unencrypted in order to download the update (the Gear app prompts you to decrypt the phone when you try and take the watch update). I've got both the Nexus 6 and 6P, so I may just go ahead and decrypt the 6, pair the watch to it, take the update, then pair it back with my 6P.

You have to unlock the bootloader, then flash a file that does the decryption. Problem is, both of those wipe the phone, so you have to start from scratch.

to be clear, missing functionality on non-Samsung phones are: no text or email app (but can reply to text and email notifications), no ability to answer a phone call, only reject, and no access to paid apps (only free apps) on the Gear app store.

This is not true anymore. I have an HTC One M8 and a gear S2 Classic. I did buy watch faces and apps on the Galaxy App store without any problem.
I've had this watch for a few months using it with my Pixel XL and Samsung pay has been working fine since I got it. Recently it hasn't been working and every time I open the gear app I get a message saying Samsung pay has stopped working. I tried resetting the watch, uninstalling everything related to it from my pixel and set it up as if it was new. Now there isn't even an option for Samsung pay in the gear app and holding the back button does nothing. Does anyone know why it disappeared?

I'm in the U.S. I did hear that the international version doesn't support Samsung pay but it's definitely a U.S version. And it's not in the settings of the gear app. Pretty much everywhere there used to be something about Samsung pay it's now missing from.

That's really odd too that shouldn't happen. Can you try to download samsung pay apk for gear watch online and see if that works

Oh well. Hopefully Samsung will update it soon to be compatible.
I just downgraded back to Nougat and can confirm that the beta version of Android O is what broke Samsung pay. So just a warning to anyone who has a gear S3 and wants to try Android O, you won't be able to use Samsung pay.
I have a S7 that will be replaced soon and I rather have a OP6 than a S9, but it has to work with my Gear S3 and use all it's functions like Samsung pay, phonecalls, Samsung health. Also that the Bluetooth can handle 2 Connie tons at the same time like bt audio in my car/Sony bt headphones.
all exept samsung pay will work. having op6 or s9 to decide, i wouldn't even consider s9..
Haven't tested samsung pay but everything else is working fine on mine.
I get my op6 Tuesday, and one of the first things I'll do is set up my gear s3. I'm really hoping Samsung pay will work. According to some initial research, it's seems possible. Lots of mixed results. I'll definitely come back with some results next next week.

Yeah looked like from what I read you have to have the "plug-in" app, but I thought you could get it from the playstore. Did it not show up in the playstore?
Edit: now that I think about it, it's all done through the Samsung gear app. However others have had the same issue where the plug-in fails to install. In which case the solution is as Dennis says above.
yeah I don't think Number Sync will work but via Bluetooth it will, My Gears S2 works so the S3 should be fine via Bluetooth

Been using my Gear S3 (Frontier) with no problems at all. Works very well thus far - enough to get me to dump my Apple Watch finally.
Now to find a way to replace the stupid 1+ phone app and this is a keeper for sure.
I have a 5t and a gear s3.
Everything works fine calls etc. Samsung pay is the hardest to get working. I had to install the apk from apk mirror. Also if yous ever chnage roms use titanium backup to backup every samsung app and its services or the watch will need to reset itself.
Btw if u root. Use magisk hide to hide all the samsung apps.
Fyi use google messages so u can reply on the watch. And if u can/want use googles phone app.
Thank you for all your input!
Now I can go agead and order the phone:good:

Hey mate. I tried installing this on my oneplus 6 , the apk file installs fine but when I open it I get the following error message.

I got that message too and several errors trying to reach the server but eventually it'll work. Try uninstalling samsung pay plugin, gear app and factory reset on the watch, then download both apps on the phone, pair with the gear app, when you install the smasung pay plugin using the apk, tap on update and then add your cards
I hear that it's better then it was but still can be flaky. Just gotta play some games to get it to wrok right I guess. Gonna wait for the new S4 watch that is ditching Tizen OS and finally going with Android Wear OS.

OnePlus 6. Find the 1.5 apk and install that.
Worked for me. Newer versions tended to give me errors like you did.
Been using samsung pay for the past month successfully. Extra bonus, the 1.5 apk has limited compatibility with the samsung gear app unlike later versions. A nice bonus is if safetynet fails(ie: magisk failed to hide it), samsung pay on the watch still works flawlessly.

I don't know if Samsung pay will work or not because I have a rooted op6 phone, and I know it doesn't work very well with rooted phones. I finally just broke down and bought a Galaxy S5 for 75 bucks on eBay and I have it plugged in at home 24/7. I used to set up my watch and Samsung pay and since it's a Samsung phone it works 100% over the internet. Non-samsung phones require a Bluetooth connection with their host phone to work with all of the features. So my Samsung phone at home connects with my gear S3 watch over the internet no matter where I am. it works like a champ for me and I'm not having to wipe my watch and reset it up every 3 days because I'm messing around with my Op6. I have been thinking about trying to get at work I'm going to be 6 just for grins and if I do I will report back here lol.
I have been using the gear S3 frontier with the op6 from the beginning, I've had the phone since launch, and everything works 100%.
Use magisk hide so Samsung pay works on one plus.
I have the Gear S3 Frontier with a Oneplus 6T that just arrived yesterday.
Everything was downloaded and installed by the Google Play store.
It works just like it did on the Samsung Galaxy Note 5.
Now I'm wondering if Samsung Pay will detect if I root or not. I did not take this chance on my Galaxy Note 5
