Hello guys, this is my first post on XDA though I have been lurking.
I am developing a screencasting software which I felt I should share with the community.
I needed to access my phone with a damaged screen so I wrote this as I couldn't find anything that fit my needs.
The only tool that came close was a 6 year old unmaintained project androidscreencast (on google code) that needed root.
I took pointers from the project and started this one in JavaFX.
It does not require root but utilizes adb commands to send input to the device so should work on all devices.
You need adb installed.
Your device must be developer enabled and discoverable by adb.
Tested on windows and a device running 4.4.2
Currently it is still in development so I haven't released any builds yet, but it works really great. I would love it if someone tested in on unix to see if it works.

I plan on purchasing an HTC Dream within the next couple days (second hand, prior to rogers 911 update such that I can root and install with cyanogenmod).
I was wondering how development on porting CLI programs to android has been. Being a long time linux user, I am quite proficient with the shell and prefer it for many tasks. I have done some googling and searched these forums, but I was unable to come across very much information.
Are any of the following programs ported to android, how successful have these ports been, and what procedure is needed to proceed with installing the ports (if they exist at all)
-rtorrent
-elinks
-finch (ncurses based instant messenger client)
-units
-mpg123
-calc (or apcalc on some distributions)
-cal
-vi
Any assistance is appreciated.

Why not download the Android SDK, emulate the device on your PC and have a hack about with it to see what works.
The standard unix stuff works ls ps and the like, but I can't vouch for the stuff you've mentioned.

None of the programs are installed, which surprises me, as nearly every *nix system has vi installed.
Now that I have received my phone, and installed cyanogenmod (which comes with busybox) I can state that vi is installed.
The other programs are not however, and they are unlikely to be ported, due to a difference in the C library for android and the full C library used for most programs.
My job requires me to use a whole arsenal of native Linux penetration tools. I carry a laptop running backtrack Linux, has all the tools I need, and is ready to go right out of the box.
I thought I would bring over these tools to my phone, and maybe save me some time.
The end result being an update.zip or rom security pros aswell as average android user can flash to thier phone. And have these utilities at there fingertips to check network vulnerabilities without downloading a linux distro and tracking down libraries dependencies , etc.
I just started working on this today. So far I have netcat and some other basic tools working. My main goal is to port the more advanced tools such as nmap, ettercap, metasploit and the aircrack-ng suite. Im aware some of these utilities wont be able to be ported. We won't know till we try .
Im looking for people to help get this off the ground and see how far we can take it.
What do you guys think? Wouldnt it be nice to run a script and find out if your wifi network and computers connectd are secure?

While I wish you the best, I know aircrack has always been that intangible gem. Always getting so close to full functionality but not quite. Though those were the early days and HW and Android has came a long way since then. Have you seen some of the older threads on aircrack? Might be some helpful info in there if you run into any issues.

There was a guy that actually got backtrack running on our phones in its entirety, not everything worked right but it was cool. Not sure where to find his stuff though as that was months ago.

Moving to General
I recently bought a ZiiO and at first look it seems like an excelent tablet for is price. But it get's me frustrated to be stuck on Android 2.2.1 version as well as stuck on Creatives' propritary updates.
At first glinpse on the device everything here looks like it has been developed according to the hardware. Not having market, not beeing able to mess around
Searching and researching on the web allowed me to root my device and install common software like the Market.
Then I realized that ZiiO's hardware is capable of supporting USB Host which sadly hasn't been enabled on the kernel that's compiled on the device. Looking at config.gz made me wonder why on the world would Creative do such a thing.
Has anyone been able to dump ZiiO's boot or kernel? I need to recompile the kernel to enable some flags. Has anyone gone through this expirence that can lead me on the right track?
Having such a variety of devices on the world makes me confuse on what should and could be done on this device.

Firstly, I would like to thank many people for their inputs on this site. I have been viewing it for quite some time, so I finally created an account. I cant wait to get in the community!
Now, as for the reason for this post. I am trying to get my ALFA USB WiFi AWUS036NHA to work with my Tab 2 7.0. After doing some research I am with the understanding that I must write the drivers into the kernel. I have a decent understanding of how the kernel works with the hardware and software of the device (the theory of it, rather), but I do not know how to actually edit the kernel. I have done some software developing on Linux, Windows, iOS, and the PSP-1000 communities, but I did nothing with their kernels.
My question is, is there a pre-built kernel with the RALINK drivers? If so, I would love a link to that, but I am also interested in learning how to modify the kernel, for I am mainly a Linux/Android fanatic.
Any input would be appreciated,

Edit : Just for informational purposes, my tablet is on Cyanogenmod 4.2.2. The only thing on it are a BlackUbuntu image, and a Backtrack 5 image, which I boot through terminal.
Edit : I am currently setting up the Eclipse IDE on my Ubuntu system. I should be ready to go by morning. I have been reading references and studying source code for the better part of the day.

I have been a long time XDA user, and follow and utilize a number of threads for my android devices!

For the first time ever i have not been able to find what I'm looking for and so I send out a plea for help (or lay out a challenge if people prefer them) !!
I have a lenovo yoga 13 and can run a live version of android 4.2 however i do not want to complete a hard drive install due to the lack of support for the wifi and BT.
I was wandering if anyone would be able to create a yoga 13 ROM including the driver for the realtek RTL8723a wifi/bt chip.
This has been working on Ubuntu elsewhere.
My knowledge does not extend passed installing ROMs so the process to learn this is beyond my grasp. I am happy to donate to developers should this help!!

I have managed to install the relevant version of android and touchscreen etc works brilliantly, i just need the ability to connect to the internet.
I guess there are two options and some advise would be great:
1 - could i use a usb wifi adaptor that would be supported by Android rather than the built in realtex card.
2 - where should i begin to look or research if i wanted to learn how to modify the install in order to include the correct kernal or support for this version (I am assuming using the working ubuntu drivers in some way). Any recommended reference materials to get me started. I appreciate this option may require quite some time to fully understand android development.
