Z5 Display problems brightness/illumination - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
i got a problem with my display.
The brightness/illumination on display when displaying content with white background is from what I see not correct.
A certain part in the middle of my display is clearly more illuminated then the rest. But only when showing the color white.
I did the diagnosis test in the menus and here it occurred again.
Does anybody have the same issue?
Is this a display problem so I have to change my phone? Or is this just a calibration problem?
Thanks in advance

I have the same problem on my z5 Dual. White backgrounds and the screen brightness increases. Not sure why this is.

I don't have any kind of problem like this with my phone

Does it do the same in manual brightness mode? If so, you probably got a faulty screen .

By manual you mean adaptive brightness off right?
If so yes in manual mode too

Here i made a photo of my display.
I think you can see it pretty good

I have exactly the same white spot on my black Z5, even in the same location. Very annoying, especially when scrolling through Facebook, Twitter and other apps with white background. On my iPhone 6S which I also use the screen is perfect.

You got a bright patch in the middle too - interesting. Maybe you could take this picture again vertically (without tilt & finger smudges) in a dark room ? I never saw 100% uniform white on any LCD & Amoled mobile screen, but yours don't look acceptable.

But this is definitely a defect screen. The bright patch in the middle is really annoying when scrolling

I returned mine today, the bright patch in the center together with all other issues was just too much. Got an S6 Edge+ instead, same weight but much larger and much better looking screen.

I have the same issue, but Sonys repair shop say there is nothing wrong which I refuse to accept. See my reply in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/help/xperia-z5-backlight-unevenness-t3229903

I'm in Singapore and on my second Z5 and there is still this unevenness in the backlight. The first set was more obvious and in the middle which was really irritating. This second one has two minor spots but they sort of form a line to the middle of the screen. It's kind of disappointing that the QC level of this product is so ****ty. Two straight out of shrink-wrapped boxes!
They are also from two revisions; the tray is different on both of mine... on the first set it was stupid with the microsim and sd slot on opposite sides meaning you had to slide one in half way to keep the sim card in before putting in the SD card. The second one made more sense with both the sim card and sd card on the same side.
I'm still pondering if I should bring it down to the telco to make another change...sigh.

guys my z5 had display but no backlight, I have bypassed the "V" and "A" both fuses still theres no backlight can anyone help?

I am creating this poll to see what screen problems people have with the one x.
Options are:
Color banding
Dead Pixels
Dust Under Screen
Light Bleed
Yellow Tinge
Multiple issues
Also Please Say what color One X you have
I have color banding and Light Bleed on a White one x.
too bright in general lol
Gray ATT version. I have banding and one very small dust spec just on the edge of the screen on the bottom right corner.

Oh god, dust and dead pixels are my ocd's worst nightmares. I get so depressed when I see them Color Banding will soon be joining them too
You should add a no issue selection.
how?
Wheres the "no problems" option?
Mine has very minor light bleed, but thats it. Its only noticeable if I'm looking at a pitch black screen in a dark room.. so its pretty much no problem
Only issue I'm having is that the screen is too bright for the auto brightness.
Other than that it's perfect
No issues. But there's no option for that in the poll.
Gradient banding and light bleed (bottom right corner).
I have a yellow screen. But for me, I am getting intermittent screen flickering, specifically in Chrome and Messages.
Furthermore, I already have tons of micro scratches on my screen. Have no idea how they got there. Glad I picked up a screen protector for $3 on amazon and Ordered a Seidio Active Case also. Don;t want this beautiful screen to get a jacked up.
No issues here either.
No problem at all here! Gray one X.

You could try Juice defender. It has an option to change the auto brightness, both the maximum light, and the average light (and minimum)
Only thing I miss there is an option to disable it while charging or in the car.
My only issue is banding. For those who DON'T have banding, I would appreciate if you'd check out my thread on the issue, especially if you're able to post a photo of your phone's screen.

no issues for me either .
banding sometimes but minor , and isnt that software related anyways?

I don't think so. Take a screenshot when you see banding, then look at the screenshot on your computer or on another phone. When I tried that, I saw less banding on the computer and on my old Captivate than on my One X, viewing the exact same image.
I have banding, but it seems more like a software bit-depth issue than a physical problem with the screen.

Guys, I wish it were this simple, but it doesn't appear to be. I can use Paint.NET to make a gradient, and view that same image file on many screens, and my One X shows more banding than the others. It still doesn't look as bad as the One X's app-uninstall screen, which is likely because my gradient is linear and theirs isn't, and so on top of there being bands, they're also unevenly spaced! But there's no denying that the bands are there (at least on mine), and they're more apparent than on the other displays I have access to (another phone, a laptop, and a TV).

I meant a driver-level firmware issue. When I had the Nook Color, there was a kernel that enabled lower bit-depth to speed up the boot, but it introduced banding like this. There was another kernel that could show full 24-bit color and had no banding.
So just loading an image onto the phone isn't proving that is a hardware issue. This just makes my argument stronger with the uneven banding being related to bit-depth and not hardware.
I have no screen issues! @TinyBoss I saw your other post and I have to say your banding does look bad. I was leaning toward software until I compared mine to yours and I'm thinking you have a bad display...

[Q] white dots on screen in black background, also when watching a video

Hi,
I am seeing 2 single white dots on left side of my phone screen. I like Galaxy R beacuse of its specification. But same time I was worried about its screen size as I am too used to keep phone on left front pocket of my jeans pant. When I drive 2 wheeler I see sometime it gets pressurized. I don't know how else I can keep this phone with me.
So the question is, did my phone create any dead pixels just because of it might have got some pressure? Anyone can help to know are those really dead pixels and how to fix them?
I can only see them when camera switch on/off and display for a moment becomes black or when watching video. Otherwise with full colour background wallpaper, dots never be seen.
Well as we have lcd screen, i dnt thinkk that problem like dead pixels in amoleds can be happen here (correct me if i m wrong)
try flashing stock rom and wipe cache and dalvik cache, may be it help. Do update ur prob resolved or not.
Sent from my GT-I9103 using Tapatalk 2
i don't think they are dead pixels, it may be because of dust.. similar thing happened to my friends Optimus One because of dust..
First let's confirm its not due to the background of the picture that was on your screen.
- Type *#0*# => Press Vibration(Black) => Now check if there are any White spots.
- If there are white spots on the screen then take it to the service center and have it checked, if its just dust as guys above me have mentioned then they'll clean it.
- If you can't see any white spots then it was the background that you were talking about which had white spots & nothing is wrong with the screen.
Hope this helps.

I have a similar white spot... well, i am saving that one, given that the R is now out of stock, if we dont see an ICS build or if samsung says they can't get to update it to ICS, i am gonna take it to the samsung centre and ask them to change the screen as i am getting that white spot and because of no stocks, i am sure i will be getting my refund
Even I had a white pixel on the left hand side of the screen on my SGR. You can observe it only while having a dark background. I read online that its pretty common so I left it.
You can try an android app - "Pixellator" (?!).. I am not sure if thats the name.. It has been made specifically for such white pixels.. Its dint work for me though... But no harm in trying

Thanks for this information. I was not knowing such hidden interface. I did above test and found no white spots. I am actually confused now. I do have scratch guard on my screen. Don't know but those 2 white spots can be seen randomly only when black background is on screen.

Then it's the background's problem .
I know CM7 has such a system app called CMWallpapers.apk , and they have the choice of setting it as "No Wallpaper" . Can you try extracting that from the CM7 ROM and giving it a try ? Don't know if it works though *shrug*

I can now see those 2 very small white spots at the same place. Do such spots are problematic in future and should be fixed at service center soon? Do they will fix this under warranty?

i had my Samsung tablet 8.9 since January and all of a sudden i noticed a white spot on the screen. it appears as gray when the device is on and the screen is white and it appears as white when the device is off or the screen is black. has anyone encountered the same problem? what is it? and why it suddenly appeared? how to solve it?
it is a normal thing. almost all lcd screens have approx. 0.03% dead pixel in whole screen even if it is new. there is no point to be worried about this.

Light Bleed Issue

Are light bleed issues this noticeable normal for this phone? I've had multiple Androids and iPhones and have never noticed anything as obvious.
That is quite noticeable! Mine does not have that issue. I had bleeding issues with my former phones, but not that noticeable. If i were you, ill have it checked by the service center.

Thanks for the input. I just wanted to know if it was a normal thing with Huawei screens.
Mine seems to have the same noticeable light leaks, but only if I crank it up to the highest brightness setting. The most apparent ones are also near the Sim / SD card slots and another near the volume rockers. It doesn't bother me though. Does anyone else get these?

Yup, that's the exact same spots as my phone. It's very annoying to me when I tried to put dark wallpapers and during movie watching, especially for really widescreen vids that have to be letterboxed. Pretty disappointed in this.

I do not know if it will work for you, but it works for me. Just press strongly with your finger the bezel in a way that minimize the light bleed. Little by little you should manage to have à more homogenous back light.
Well, the light bleed problem is also noticeable in the replacement AM7 I received. Not very good for watching movies with lots of black or for using black themes/wallpapers imo. Here are pics of them next to an iPhone, all with the same wallpaper.
^wow, the light bleed issue in your unit is really serious! And even the replacement has the same problem?
However, in my unit, no matter how I try to look at it, in dark and completely black wallpapers, I cant seem to find any lihht bleed.
I wonder if other users here also experience this issue?
This situation is very frustrating. I wonder how common of a problem this is with the AM7?
haven't got my phone yet but will check it out for this issue
Wow. While my phne was in recovery installing latest OTA update, against a very dark bacground, I noticed the light bleed on the right side, where the power and volume buttons are located.
So yes, I confirm the light bleed. And I think it is a build issue.

Did you make sure auto brightness was disabled after sliding the brightness slider to max? Moving it to max alone doesn't give you maximum brightness.
As for the tint, you can change the colour temperature of your screen by going Settings -> Display -> Colour Temperature. Adjust that till you're happy with the colour tint.

[Q] Screen ripple

Hello
I have noticed that my Moto G (1st gen) has a problem where if you touch the screen you can see a "ripple effect" in the center of the screen, it's get more noticeable as you press harder, but even if you press light touches it's still visible somehow but very little.
I have searched the forums and found people having this issue with the 2nd gen of the device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/help/screen-question-t2947732
here is a picture of the problem some guy posted (in my device it's always presents in the center of the screen no matter where i press):

I know LCD screens have this issue, but I suppose in phones they had to deal with it somehow.
what's bothering me it's that if it's more noticeable if i press the middle of the screen, the bottom and top parts seems less affected. like something is applying pressure to the middle of the screen (the battery maybe ??) I'm also seeing the "ripple" when I'm applying pressure to the M logo at the back of the phone.
Shame that even G3 has this issue who even cares about QHD lol, 720p is more than enough even for 5.5" screens.
Thanks for helping, I would be grateful if more people can check this out.

No bro, not the battery problem(no pressure), it is the way they made the phone.. Each LCD have his own "ripples", just take an app like linkedin en take a blue background you will see how sick the ripples are. Im also irritating a lot but really leave it dont look at the ripples
I've never had such a problem before with any touchscreen electronic ever had from resistive to capacitive touch. I did try to press really hard on the center of the screen of my Moto G and everything that happens is a slightly distortion because the glass is touching the pixels but not what you reported. What I noticed is a tiny bit reduction of the brightness every time I press the screen but is so minimal that you have to be in a pitch black room and pay a lot of attention to it. So I guess you could return the phone as defective or change the display if you're able to do that.
P.S. the pic you posted is not a total black image so when I turn the brightness all the way up I see something even if I'm not touching the screen. I tested with my own made really black pic and I have no issue whatsoever.

There is no way you really pressed hard and nothing happened.
If you would have pressed hard the ripples should be clearly visible, this is how LCD works and it's known. every phone with LCD I saw would ripple if pressed hard enough. My problem is that it's visible another normal usage in a dark room.
Are you sure it actually reduced the brightness? it supposed to be brighter. it will look like a white stain like in this picture: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3036130&d=1417076320. And yes the picture is not really fully black I found it on google and from my PC it looked blacked.

But why the ripple happens in the same spot? no matter where I press it's in the same location (in the center of the screen), that's makes me wonder, because in LCD's it's supposed to ripple where you touched.
Do you have a Moto G 1st gen too and actually sees this with regular taps? it's changing based on the tap location or it's fixed?

I own a LG G3 and before 2 LG G2 's. So i know what ripple means . Check the Z3 of Sony same ****.

Light Bleeding

I've decided to start a new thread to gain some focus on this issue.
It is common on the U11 according to some posts.
I've just noticed after the recent update, maybe it was there from the beginning, that this device has a lot of light bleed around the sides when using always-on feature. Some parts of the edges of the device has greater light bleed than other sections.
It's quite noticeable and adds more light to the room at night. If only the time was showing it would be perfect. This is what I thought was there before the upgrade. However I believe that any light bleeding is a hardware thing not a software thing.
This could be a reason why it drains the battery so much.
The light bleeding isn't noticeable during the day as far as I have checked.
Maybe I should return this device but not sure if HTC will agree.

According to some early buyer, U11+ shows the light bleeding only from the bottom right corner of the display.
Also it should be barely noticeable: if your unit has "lot of light bleed around the sides" maybe it has a faulty or not properly assembled display...or maybe you are exaggerating things!
Can you please show a picture of this issue?
In darkness, the light bleed is visible, and expected on an LCD because you can not light up just the pixels (the date and notification floating window) which you want to show on an LCD . The whole screen has to be lit up with minimal brightness.
In normal lighting, its not visible at all because the brightness on U11+ can go down quite a bit and blacks are blacker than I have seen on an LCD.
See attached image.
Not sure what's acceptable with light bleeding by HTC's standards or most mobile manufacturers.

Ouch! That really looks bad.
I was eyeing this phone, and can't decide between it and the LG V30. Both seem to be a lottery with the displays unfortunately...

Got my HTC u11 plus today and my screen has the same kind off light bleed.
It's only on the "smart display" though

Can't believe I'm the first one to ask, but is it the UK or Asia model?

Asia model , its very minimal on my phone. Have to stand in a dark room to see the bleed in the right hand corner
Mine is direct from Taiwan.
Yes, the bleed is only noticeable using the always-on feature.
I could swear I didn't notice it before the recent update. But it's got to be a hardware thing.
LCD Panel + Backlight = visible light on black screen. No surprises here tbh lol

Exactly!! To all the HTC detractors making this a huge issue, show me an LCD screen which does not have it.
Here is another nugget: the non-uniform light bleed shown in the photo above is because of special algorithm followed by always on display software. If you just do a full screen black (use the Full Screen Test from play store), you will see a uniform backlighting, which is the best I have seen on an LCD. U11+ display has no defects in my opinion.
HTC should not have even tried AOD on an LCD screen.
Htc m9 and 10 didn't have that much

I have the HTC 10. The black on HTC U11+ is blacker than the black on HTC 10 i.e. the backlight is even lower on U11+ than 10. I tested using the Full Screen Test I mentioned above. I would like to mention again that non-uniform light bleed is only an issue with always-on-display, and not with the screen in general. And its the non-uniformity of backlight that makes it seem like an issue.
Thanks for all the feedback.
I'm very happy with the U11+.
I just selected the option to turn the always-on feature when I move the device, so it's very liveable.
HTC has always been my favourite manufacturer for the last 13+years. The HD2 one of the best years ago.
Ouch, this light bleed seems harsh. Although it should be expected given the screen's technology.
It's not a default. Devsk explained it well, I wouldn't worry it
Even my Moto X Pure LCD screen has bleed, but it is only visible in total darkness on a black screen. Doesn't bother me in the least.
PS Anyone who is curious can download the Backlight Bleed Test app from the Playstore to view how much bleed your particular LCD screen has.
People who think this is normal for LCD screens, let me stop you right there! The HTC U11+ has blacks nearly as black as LED screens, even at night. There was no light bleed when I received this device. I held it next to the S8 Plus, and both had almost the same black values. It's amazing.
After a week however, I suddenly had an extreme light bleed, 0,5cm around all edges, like some sort of weird snow theme. Luckily it faded within an hour. Now it's normal again, except for the down right corner. That's only noticable when the screen is black, and it shows the time. It's barely noticable though.
This incident led me to believe it's anything but normal. The seller told me it's alright to exchange my device for a new one, so I hope it's not an issue with all devices. :fingers-crossed:
You'd think it's an hardware issue, but what are the possibilties the software influenced the backlight? Any thoughts?
UPDATE:
Just had a software update, and the light bleed is gone now. Even in the down right corner. Is this a coincidence, or do you think it might have been a software problem?
