[Q] Help my phone's camera!

i just got htc one xl (international versionfor at&t) and everything is just superb. but wait here is a problem with my phone's camera the image quality is not awesome in low lights its average with some noise at the ends of picture now where is the BSI sensor result??and the major issue is that my phone looses its focus while recording video and when i press centre of phone's screen then it appears ok what the hell is this? is it a software problem or my phone is buggy

There's an international One X forum, go there. Some others may be having the same problem. Honestly, it just sounds like you're expecting too much from the camera in terms of low light. Try messing with exposure? The phone comes over exposed though already.

yes i am expecting too much because htc and gsmarena makes me to expect that too much impressive result by talking about f/2.0 and BSI sensor performance. i also used n8 and that was mind blowing result and camera phone. anyhow what about problem in focus while recording? any one have any idea?

It must be a faulty handset. I've taken shots in almost absolute darkness and still been blown away by the camera's low level light performance. Like someone mentioned it's already oversaturated out the box.

And oversaturation is good for low light pictures right? Sorry, my camera knowledge is slim to none at best.

The only thing can really help the low light photography is a large sensor. You need a sensor the size of APS-C or full frame 35mm to achive that. The pee sized sensor in all phones can never get what you want no matter what technological wonders they have.
Unfortunately, those larger sensor (and the larger lens) is impossible to embed into a phone.

I also have a problem with the camera where the pics are mostly too yellow. Is this a common issue and is there a fix? I can't fine RGB adjustment in the stock camera app. Is there a good 3rd party camera app that has this feature?

It happens when you shoot indoors with incandescent lamps as lighting. You need to manually change the white blance to Incadescent mode in camera settings.
It's a common issue for majority of the cameras out there.

The continuous autofocusing does seem to be quite aggressive, resulting in the phone always searching for something to focus on. This may be what you're experiencing. Try turning off the Face Detection option in the cameras settings. Hopefully that helps!
The low-light performance of this camera is not mind-blowing. The overall image quality and abilities of the camera is, to me, quite spectacular. But take my word, and the word of reviews around the internet, with a grain of salt, as we are all speaking relatively. That is, understand that this is a pretty awesome camera for a camera phone. It's not an 808, n8, n9, nor is it your average point and shoot camera, which will have a large sensor and better image processing. But the HOX is capable of taking photos that compare to those types of devices.

I can't tell you one way or the other. I have not used the S3 or really looked deeply into it's camera. I'm sure this would be something you'd want to look around the web for, to see if any sites have gotten a hold of an S3 to test it out.

Just read that the SGIII has the same camera as the 4S. Take it as you will, but I like that camera. However its the post processing in the software that will produce the end result.

Anyone found a decent camera app that's not laggy?

Hi Folks,
I visited the fair today with my boy which arrives in the city once a year.
My boy was on the rides and I tried getting a few photos of him with my 20mp Sony Xperia Z3....
By the time the photo was taken, my boy had already gone by....
The camera is soooooooooo disappointing, but has so much potential to be good.
Has anybody discovered a decent camera app yet, that has no shutter lag and one that makes full use of the camera?
If I don't find something by November, I'm going for the Nexus 6 :silly:

Haven't tried a different app yet, but I may have something else for you. It's the autofocus that delays the photo.
1. Use the camera button
-push it down slightly, it should focus
-once it has found the focus, just keep holding it slightly
push the button completely if you want to take the photo, it should be without a delay now.
You can also use a different type of autofocus... Have to try the different modes for myself.
Also use manual mode, depending on the light conditions and the movement, you want a high shutter speed and if needed a higher iso, which gives you a sharper image while moving.

With an awful flash too, in sub par lighting, like parties, this is a recipe for absolute disaster. Can't believe Sony didn't sort out the camera flash.

Sony has the ability to film and during film to make pictures. I do that for fast moving pictures, like filming friends that pass by during marathon's. You can then decide to keep the film and the pictures. If you only want pictures, delete the film afterwards. This way you can start filming in advance and you are sure you are not too late and you have the risk your camera is not ready yet.

I haven't tried it yet, but have you tried the Timeshift burst? I think this is what we should use when trying to capture moving objects.

As a general rule, I only use auto on any camera when there is no more than one thing away from perfect conditions:
If it's motion but in great lighting, auto is ok.
If it's dark but the subject is still, auto is ok.
If it's a bit dark AND there is motion, you are gonna need to set up some manual settings or a mode like burst to get a good result. That said, as above, focussing first is essential for moving objects. Find something that is at the same distance as the subject you want, half hold the button to get the focus point, then hold it until the subject comes into frame, then depress fully. This, combined with burst, is the best way for fast movement.

There's no excuse for this camera, it's a mess...
I have a Fuji XT1 camera and I know how photography works, apparently the Xperia Z3 has 20 mega pixels - Maybe it does, but only if you want a grainy shot....It's shocking!

How can you say you understand photography when all you point to is the megapixel count? There is so much more to a good photo than resolution.

The reason I point to the 20 mega pixel is because the photos taken with this camera should be of a good enough standard to print out at a size of 18" x 12" however, the photos look grainy on screen so I'd hate to see how crap they look any bigger.
The camera is shocking, the 4k videos are too so please dont try to defend it. Its very poor!

A Better Camera is a good alternative.

Camera photo quality

I've just bought the GEM-702L and I'm a bit disappointed with the main camera quality, even in very good lighting. Photos of things reasonably near are OK, but general scenic shots aren't very sharp at all particularly near the edges, regardless of whether I set it to 13 MP or 6 MP. The pictures look like they're not quite properly in focus. For comparison, the same photos on the Galaxy Note 4 are much sharper, even at the same number of pixels.
What do others think of the main camera quality? Any tips for getting better results? I'd be grateful if you could post some photos you've taken so I can see if they're similar to mine in quality.

Auto focus is the problem
No replies - maybe this is a bit of a sore point with fellow X2 owners?
Anyway after more experimentation, I've discovered that the problem seems to be with the camera auto focus - it tries to focus too close. Tapping on a different part of the picture doesn't seem to help. However, if I assign focus to the volume keys and manually focus at infinity, scenic shots come out much better. That's not ideal, but it's a simple and easy workaround and so I'm a lot happier. Unfortunately I can't change my poll vote, but if I could I'd put it up one grade from poor to good.

Camera has been very good for me. Photos are crisp and clear

In good light today and using manual focus I took a number of photos using manual focus and I was happy with the results, unlike the ones I took with autofocus. I've got the 702L, although I wouldn't have thought the camera software and results on the 703L would be any different. I tried using Open Camera, but that didn't help and wasn't able to control the focus.
Does anyone want to share any of their photos taken with the X2?

Here's one I took on my X2 in NY on my way to a camping trip in NJ. The second one is a photo I took a minute later with my Nexus 6. The next two are two I just took in low light conditions in my office. The first one is from the X2, the second from the Nexus 6. The same for the third set of photos.

Go into the camera settings and look for the "Volume Button Function" option.

Camera Issues
So I know this is an old thread, but I love my phone but the camera just looks like crap. seems like there are bubbles on the lens itself. Anyone else have this issue?

I've never seen that. My camera in both my X2's are not bad. Here's a few I took with my 702L yesterday while looking at wedding venues. It looks like you have some kind of condensation or mold in the camera lens.

Mold might be a bit extreme, but it looks like a bad tint job on my lens, it is the only reason I've thought of getting a different phone.

IMHO it should be the first reason to ask retailer for replacing your phone...

My biggest complaint so far: Front Facing Camera Image Quality

Just picked up a v10 from tmo yesterday and been playing around with it. I've seen two different V10's and both have had very unimpressive front facing image quality. I know that it's 5 MP vs the G4's 8 MP. However, whenever I open it up, it looks very grainy and soft in low light. During the day in bright light outside, it looks very oversharpened and the dynamic range is poor. The sky is typically completely blown out, and my face looks a bit unrealistic with the oversharpening. I've played around with the beauty feature and tried it at different levels. Indoors, even with beauty set to 0, the image was still very soft. I also did HDR off and on and it didn't make a difference. When recording video, it looks a lot better. These do seem like software issues. I'm just really surprised since LG is really pushing photography/video with this phone, but the front camera images just don't look good at all to me. I'm going to be using the V10 for a bit to see if I want to keep it, or if I want to go back to the 6P. I don't expect the same quality of front facing camera on the V10, as the 6P. I just didn't expect it to be this much worse. I also compared it to a G4, and the G4 looked great. I don't think the 3 MP difference should make that much of a difference.

You need to remember the V10 ups the screen gamma (everything looks pastel/washed out) and adds software sharpening when you're in sunlight, so what you're seeing on the screen in sunlight is not really what the camera is capturing.

It does look a bit better after I take it. I also uploaded it to drive and looked at it on my computer. It's still somewhat oversharpened. Can you explain the screen gamma? So, everything that's on the screen will look pastel like? So, if I send someone a picture or upload it to instagram/FB it will look better to other people?
Edit: In decent light, the front facing camera looks better in snapchat, however it tends to be fairly dark. I guess it uses a lower ISO? not sure. But it also looks less processed. The back camera is also pretty dark in snapchat.

I will say I LOVE the wide angle selfie... I mean I have NEVER been a selfie kinda guy but it really does capture alot. I can get me and my family of 4 easily in one pic.
The image quality could be better but it's nice to be able to get more into the picture.

Coming from Note 4, I do agree with you that the FCC is a little bit lacking on the sharpness department. It seems like there's an overly-aggressive noise-reduction being applied even with the "Beauty" mode turned to 0. I just that the selfies looks smushy compared to the ones taken by my note 4.

Does it make a difference which ffc you're using? The wide angle lens tends to be slightly grainier compared to the solo lens. It defaults to wide..
I wonder what's the actual megapixel capability of the front sensor as well as it's pixel size..
Note. I need beauty mode setting of 10. I'm still hella oogly set at highest... :silly:

So, what I've noticed is that when using the stock camera it tends to oversharpen making it look artificial. But, if I use snapchat, or google camera, it makes it seem like it can't focus or something. The image looks very, very soft and even a bit blurred. In low light, it just looks dark and noisy.

Nope, both look the same to me. Honestly, I compared a front facing image with a Nexus 5, and while the nexus 5 is obviously low resolution it actually didn't look THAT much worse. I really wish they kept the single camera from the G4. It looked great when I checked it out. I'm still debating about keeping this or going back to the 6P. If the V10 had the same FFC as the 6P/G4, had the same slow motion capabilities as the 6P, and maybe have a slightly more saturated screen I would have to say the V10 is definitely a much better phone. I still might end up keeping it though. I do like the manual control, better video capture and of course the sd card/removable battery. Also, I prefer the design/build of the V10.

just got the LG V10 around mid November. Mostly bought it for the camera...was supposed to be the top of the line and have great reviews. I HATE this camera. The pics all looked washed out and dull. I have told Verizon about this twice and the last time the kid was kinda smart assy about it and said I'm not gonna get saturated pretty pics. I'm going to get detail pics of what I'm actually seeing. I want my beautiful, colorful pics back. I mean who doesn't want colorful vibrant pics! He told me if I want that then I'm going to have to edit my pics. Very disappointed in this phone...if I could get rid of it I would...

I don't know...I'm trying Verizon one more time here in a few minutes. I will ask them about that. I sure hope so. I'm already looking into selling the phone and coming up with the difference to pay it off to get a new one. I show people all the time and they all say the same thing. I like bright, beautiful pics. With this camera there's no vibrant colors and some of the pics look like there's like a "hazy" over them. After I use and editor...they look really nice (I will admit) but I'm not going to edit every pic I take when my Samsung Galaxy s5 they all looked good and I would pic just a few to tweak up to make look even better. Not edit every pic to have it look as it should!

Mi4c Low camera quality

Hello, so I been using this phone for few weeks, and now I gave up. Camera quality is terrible, only close and with flash shots are okay. But even outside, little bit further it comes blurry. What's the problem? Third (3) photo is looking great with flash outside. Second photo is blurry, if just zoom little bit.. Others without flash just look's terrible, and I don't know what's the problem...

The Mi4c camera seems to be on par with most other midrange Chinese phones. Coming from a Nexus 5, everything about this phone is an upgrade, except the camera - which is a shame because it's not like the N5 had the best camera ever - but it was still better under most conditions than the Mi4c

Mi 4C actually has better image quality than most phones at the same price range. But admittedly its auto-focus is a bit problematic. Your photos seems to be the problem of auto-focus as well. My Mi 4C produces very good photos (close or far objects) when focused correctly.
If you are using Snapdragon Camera, try disabling Zero Shutter Lag (press Red Eye Reduction a couple of times to enable developer options).

That's normal. You shouldn't zoom in with a phone camera because there is no optical zooming. Zooming in on a phone is like enlarging a photo on your computer. Of course it will look painted. It's not because you are not using Snapdragon Camera.

Snapdragon Camera is the default camera in CM13. It's OK if you don't have it.
Try these steps to see if you can take a decent photo:
1. Find an outdoor place with bright sunlight
2. Hold your camera very steadily (find something to support, like a table, light pole, etc)
3. Press the screen to focus
4. Press the shutter button lightly (to reduce camera shake)
The Zero Shutter Lag function keeps making the photo blurry for some reason. I don't know if there is Zero Shutter Lag function in MiUI camera, or whether it can be disabled. If everything fails, try another camera app.

My Mi4c takes way better photos than my N5 ever did. That was one of the worst cameras I ever owned.

Interesting. I find with the Mi4c that the pictures come out ok only if taken in full daylight and the subject is perfectly still. The N5 camera captures objects in motion. For example, my 2 year old splashing in the pool. The Mi4c will show the pool and surroundings well enough, but the kid and the water splashes are just a blur. The N5 will capture the kid in motion and even the individual drops of water.
I admit, that on release in 2013 , the N5 camera was a bit of a potato, but subsequent updates to Google camera turned it into a relatively decent shooter.

So use Google camera. I get better focus from it, not to mention 4k.

So use Google camera. I get better focus from it, not to mention 4k.

Which ROM are you using? I'm on TSCM 13.1 and Google camera doesn't seem to work well.. at least not the version I had on the phone (3.2 I think)

sMiUI, it required a fix to enable HDR but no problems sense.

For example, my 2 year old splashing in the pool. The Mi4c will show the pool and surroundings well enough, but the kid and the water splashes are just a blur. I admit, that on release in 2013 , the N5 camera was a bit of a potato, but subsequent updates to Google camera turned it into a relatively decent shooter.

The difference between N5 and Mi4C that you mentioned is probably due to the difference in lighting conditions. When you took the photo with N5, you were likely under very bright sunlight so the camera used a fast shutter speed (e.g. 1/500s), freezing everything in the frame. When you took the photo with Mi4C, you might be under weaker sunlight (e.g. overcast) so the camera used a slower shutter speed (e.g. 1/50s), so everything that was staying still appeared sharp and everything that was moving (your kid and the water splash) appeared blurry.
If you still have your N5, try both phones under the same lighting condition. I think Mi4C will give better results. If Mi4C still gives blurry shots in good lighting, try manually setting a high ISO value (e.g. ISO1600) to force the camera to use a fast shutter speed.

Google Camera doesn't work well on CM13. There is probably no fix for that. I think Snapdragon Camera (the default camera in CM13) is very good, despite its slightly inconvenient UI.

Unfortunately, it wasn't a difference in conditions. I had one phone in each hand in full daylight.
By no means am I suggesting that the N5 is the best camera in the world, or that the Mi4c is terrible. The Mi4c clearly smokes the N5 in terms of how long it takea to start the camera, how fast it can take pictures (though using HDR, it's probably a wash), and ability to focus on still objects at much closer range.
I read as widely as I could when looking for a new phone and overall am still eminently pleased with my choice. I just wish for once that a professional reviewer would take into account the idea that sometimes people take pictures of living things that move instead of just trees, random buildings or the crap on their desks :lol:

If the lighting condition is the same, it's probably the difference in algorithm in exposure calculation that causes the difference. Try using a high ISO on Mi4C, or switch to "Sports Mode" (if any). Maybe that'll help.

Post samples, it's very possible that your unit has a faulty lens.

I still think it is the problem of focus.
When the camera focuses correctly, everything in the frame is very sharp:
But when the camera screws up the focus (which happens quite often), then the photo becomes blurry like the one you have shown:

Your last 2 samples look like serious lens decentering, but then before the decentering seems to be on the other side. Almost as if a lens element, or an element group is lose.

Alright, I took few more photos few days ago. Last photo looks very sharp, maybe good focused, but that was hell a pain. Almost every photo is out of focus then. Only that looks fine, and close shots while steady.. It's kinda really hard to get focused shot even steady.
