SIM card not detected (anymore) - Xiaomi Mi 4i

Hi,
some issues with my brand new Xiaomi Mi 4i.... I'm getting reaaaally tired of this.
My story with this phone went well for a day. Then I tried to install a french ROM and I guess I did something wrong cause my phone was hardbricked. I managed to recover from that (throught steps I couldn't really remember, I tried so many things) but when I put my SIM card on my phone, it's not detected anymore, despite working on another device (a Lumia 1320)
I read it might be an hardware issue (and not covered by warranty, which is a real shame), but some stuffs tells me otherwise :
- the card was working before the hardbrick;
- MiPCSuite is messed up: it worked perfectly before the hardbrick, but now it's considering my phone as a "mi device" (and not a Xiaomi Mi 4i), I can't backup anything because my phone "isn't up to date" (despite having installed MiUI7 to check if the issue came from MiUI6 for some reasons)... I know it's nothing really important, but it might indicate that it's software related... right ? :crying:
I took the hardbrick well because I know it was my fault, and my fault only. But now that I have this issue... I'm kinda pissed. And the fact is that I don't have any center near me, because I'm in France (explaining why I tried to install a french rom and why my english isn't the best), so if I have to send my Mi 4i back, it will cost me a lot AND I won't have my device for monthes...
If you have ANY information that could help me, I would gladly take it. Thanks !
Edit : "baseband" is marked as unknown. Guess it matters...

did you backup your EFS (EFS Backup) before flashing custom rom? if yes then try tro restore your efs with twrp (i assumed you used twrp)

My motto always has been, and I know it's a very stupid motto, "if you backup, things are going to mess up". I never backedup anything, assuming everything would go according to plan.
So no, sadly, I don't have any EFS backup (or any backup at all...). I used TWRP, but since my phone resurrected, I didn't have the guts to reinstall TWRP. If I don't have any backup, it would be useless, wouldn't it?
I'm gonna try when I'll can to redo a full factory reset + fastboot flash using MiFlash Tools. Read it worked for Xiaomi Mi4, but don't have much hope. I guess the issue relies on something else than just a ROM. ( but I might be wrong, once again I'm really not an expert and this is my first Android device ( and yeah, yeah, I was stupid ) ).

try FastBoot Flashing, open this link
http://en.miui.com/thread-112662-1-1.html
i hope it only software related, not hardware related
*btw can you do imei checkup with your phone?

I hope the same thing than you
By IMEI checkup, did you mean verify if my MiPhone is a legit one? If yes, yeah, I tried and it's an official one.
If not, in the "Details", neither IMEI or IMEI SV are known.

It says "Invalid IMEI"... I flashed as your link said, but didn't work...

Well. "All I have to do" is to fix the two corrupted IMEI files. I found which ones are appropriate : mmcblk0p20 et p21.
I guess they are corrupted, I don't really know... Dunno if there is anyway to fix this, maybe by modifying the files with notepad or something like that. Really, I don't know, but I'm kinda despaired.

Thanks. Gonna try this.
Quick question : could you upload somewhere your mmcblk0p20 and mmcblk0p21 files for me to compare with mine?
Two ways to get it : with mi4i toolkit (EFS backup, it will be stored on /sdcard/efs-backup) or by following the tutoriel by magdag :
http://en.miui.com/thread-59832-1-1.html

Hi, it's me again,
I contacted the saler of my Mi 4i to ask if he knows any way to repair it or why. I was very surprised to see that the website proposed me 1) A partial refund (40%) on the websites account 2) A total refund (but the item is shipped at my cost) or 3) The same phone, half price, without the need of being reshipped.
I'm very surprised that it's covered by warranty... any ideas about that? Any chance that once I've shipped my Mi4i back, they'll ask me to pay for the replacement?

i am facing similar issue but my sim is not detecting on first slot but it is detecting on second slot
even my imei is showing correctly should is go for replacement coz i bought it few days back

If the SIM card tray is damaged (for example, a piece of plastic is chipped off or a metal plate is deformed), this can be the cause of the problem when the Xiaomi smartphone does not see the SIM card.
I had such a situation on my Mi 3. In the service center they could not find the cause of the problem, I found it myself.
I hope this information will help to somebody.

With a phone root and busybox

there is NO IMEI because your efs folder is corrupted or missing/doesnt exist/got deleted,etc..so here are the things you need to follow
* Root your phone first using this link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1894737
*Flash a custom recovery (ClockworkMod Recovery/CWM)
so now you have a custom recovery so now you can take a backup and you should take a backup(for precautionary measures).
*Install the app "Galaxy_S Unlock" from playstore as LoLaTion said and if you cant download it from playstore then download the apk(installation)file which you will get easily on web.
Also install BusyBox which is available on both playstore and web.
*Now by using the application "Galaxy_S Unlock" try to recover your IMEI.
and if still there is no luck on your phone then you can just go to Samsung Service Centre and hopefully they will solve this problem for you.
Phone=rooted
flash cwm for backup
installed busy box
tried to repair using galaxy s unlock
but no luck, service centre said they can change board but it cost 70-80% of the brandnew
i can still see my efs folder
.nv_core.bak
.nv_core.bak.md5
.nv_data.bak
.nv_data.bak.md5
was dated 10/12/2012
and my friend said this phone was damage in november
i think there is still a way to fix this rather than go to service centre cause i still don't have budget to buy new board

do you get any error message like
Warning! A problem was detected with your device. Your device IMEI number is invalid. And invalid IMEI number could cause network issues including the inability to call emergency numbers.
then this link might help you http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/28963/how-to-restore-my-imei
however, while browsing our forums I came across this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546
but you cannot use it because its not for our phone... wish we could had something like that.. and just asking out of curosity does your phone have a IMEI number under the battery?

Strange efs/imei problem, wont flash to stock

so I have a SR I just put a new (used, off ebay but new to me) motherboard in, and it works fine except for no imei/baseband, so obviously no data/voice/etc.
the efs folder seems to be fine...imei folder is in there, keystr file is there...I don't understand what the problem is.
the worst part is, only certain roms will flash...I cannot flash to stock, I've tried with odin and from recovery, a couple different stock versions of GB, ICS, and still no luck. It actually flashes, then does the "android is upgrading" screen, but then bootloops on the optimizing apps part. I've tried to flash to stock probably 20 times now, wiped everything, fixed permissions, etc...without fail it bootloops every time.
the only roms Ive gotten to flash are slim and jedi...no stock rom will flash, nor avatar and a couple others I've tried. but slim and jedi flash and boot right up...just have blank imei/baseband.
I've scoured threads for days trying to figure out what to do here...nobody seems to have my exact problem, and everything I've found about restoring efs/imei/baseband has involved flashing to stock...which I can't do.
anyone have any ideas?
Have you tried flashing different radios (baseband)?

Take a look at this thread, it may help. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25172599#post25172599
thanks for the replies...
I've flashed UCM1 and UCLL3 radios, they flash fine but no change...still can't flash to stock and no imei/baseband/service.
That fix thread was one of the first I found, but as I still have my keystr file in the efs folder, I didn't think it would apply to me...I suppose I could make an external backup of my efs, delete it and try one of those methods from scratch.
read through the restore to stock sticky http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398 and go through the trouble shooting sections, if that doesn't help u could have bad hw

Hey, Im facing the exact same problem! just that my imei turned to 0 and basband to unknown after i upgraded to cynogenmod 10.1-rc.2.
It was working fine till suddenly one day i lost network. I tried everything like you did. So far ive had no luck fixing my efs!
What you can do is download QTPS and in it there is a RF NV Item manager to rewrite your efs. For that you need to put you phone into DIAG mode unfortuantely i cant get to that on 10.1nightly cynogenmod that im using.
I m stuck. I know for sure flashing roms or radios wont help at all. the same boot loop problem happens when I flash using odin, it use to work perfectly fine earlier.
Some how the nv_data.bin and such files are missing from my efs>imei folder that contain the imei data.
If you find something please lemme know too [email protected]

will do.
also, you may know this already, but just in case, be aware the skyrocket doesn't use nv_data.bin...I thought it did too when I first started searching around about this, and when i couldnt find it I was pretty freaked out...but then i found out the skyrocket actually uses 3 encrypted partitions rather than a nv_data file. so if you have at least some files in your efs/imei folder you may be in a better spot than it seems. of course if its totally empty, you'll likely have a lot more work to do.
I'll update if I have any luck.

I actually have octopus box as well as the z3x samsung tool installed, however, they're both server activation based...the software is useless without an $89 (octopus) to $120( (z3x) activation.
I'd rather not spend that kind of money for something I'll likely only need once, so I'm gonna do as much as I can in the way of free solutions, and if I have no luck there I'll probably just send it to mobiletechvideos for their $40 efs/imei repair. I'm guessing they use one or more of these repair box programs themselves anyway, and will do the same job for only $40.
thanks for the suggestion anyway though..

There's this polish guy who probably also has all the same boxes and he takes €10 for imei repair by remote desktop.

And finally you could try helping the op of this thread to add compatibility for skyrocket, this would be free.

Also i'd like to know that the qualcom nv tool showed my esn as dead and mied as 000....000 does the dead thing mean it isnt repairable ?
I tried using QPTS but this is where I get stuck.. (img attatched)

People want money for it because it's mostly used for making stolen phones work again.
That means real life risks like fines, jail etc.
Of course there are lots of examples when people experiment with this or that and delete their imei accidentally, or want to change the imei for some other reason. But these are more rare.
An update...
I managed to finally get flashed to stock...still null/null imei & baseband unknown. Efs folder is still there with files, keystr file is on...not sure what else I can do myself at this point so, I guess its time for the Polish dude or mobiletechvideos.

Ohkies.
Did you ask the polish guy about the reason why he was not able to fix your mobile. Coz, I'm just having similar problem like yours. I tried working with all the local samsung service centre guys, nothing worked. One guy said that my mobile IMEI is locked in some database, so it is not picking or detecting my SIM, hence locked. I know that my mobile is unlocked and is valid, I ignored his comments.
I assume you changed your MotherBoard of the mobile with the new cracked SR's, so that it could take new IMEI instilled in new board. Is it so?
Also, please suggest me about any alternatives on how to fix this problem.:crying:

[Q] Galaxy Note 2 - where is IMEI stored?

Hi,
After installing a custom ROM, the IMEI reported by Android is different from the one on the sticker under the battery.
I believe the IMEI is somewhere in the 'efs' folder, but where exactly? There are all sorts of files and folders in that folder.
There is even a folder called 'imei', but it contains just one file called 'mps-code.dat', and that is only three bytes long, which isn't enough to contain the 15-digit IMEI.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Steve

No, my phone stopped working and I think it's because the IMEI has got corrupted when I was messing with various custom ROMs - it no longer matches the sticker. I want to figure out a way to fix it - I can't bear the thought that I've just bricked a fine phone that I paid good money for.
Where in the efs folder? There are loads of files and folders in there.
Thanks,
Steve
Wait wait,
You can't text or connect to the network?
Try flashing a official firmware and see if the IMEI matches...
It's not that simple to modify your IMEI n.o, special softwares are required to do this.... It's stored in .nv_data
Don't you have any efs backups?
IMEI getting corrupt is seen many times in s3 and note 2 devices....
And also, modifying your iMEi is illegal, but people out there use a software to do it.... May not be good to discuss this software here...
And one more thing, does your phone shows a generic IMEI number when you dial *#06* ?

Thanks for replying, eatsleep. That's right - the whole phone works fine. It will see all the mobile networks in my area, and will register itself on mine (O2-UK). The only thing that doesn't work is voice telephony, SMS, and mobile data.

Here I must admit to being a bloody fool. I didn't know what I was doing and messed about stupidly in CWM, mounting and unmounting, deleting, reformatting, and so on. Basically I was trying to follow several guides at the same time, and made a total mess of it.
And no, I didn't know about backing up the efs before I started.

Not a generic one. It's really weird, because it's almost but not quite the same:
Sticker inside phone:
xxxxxx05861xxx3
*#06#:

Wow! I've just seen how much it costs to buy that eight-tentacled device who's name shall not be mentioned.
$135 makes poor sense if it's only going to be used once. Perhaps the best idea is to check my local phone repairers until I find one who has the device?
Steve
Bumpety bump just this once:
Any chance of correcting the IMEI myself?
Thanks,
Steve

Thanks for replying, eatsleep. That's right - the whole phone works fine. It will see all the mobile networks in my area, and will register itself on mine (O2-UK). The only thing that doesn't work is voice telephony, SMS, and mobile data.
Yeah, I've done that. No good, I'm afraid.

Hey babe..... please remove both of your IMEIs from here and never post them again in public. I'll post back in some time.... and your IMEI looks quite fine to me but still, lemme look for some time
And, your phone is not bricked, you've just got a bad IMEI

Thank you for replying! I've edited my post to remove the IMEI, as requested. Perhaps you could alter the one where you quote my message?
I realise everyone must say this, but I'm genuinely not trying to do anything questionable or immoral. I just want to restore the IMEI so it's the same as the one on the sticker.
Thanks,
Steve

Can't find some content for your device but please do one last precaution before following any more tutorials, backup your efs folder and place it in a safe place.......
If you don't find anything, I can provide you with some guides for s3 (my device ) but don't know if they'll work for you....
One advice, reset your phone and send it to any service center.... They may charge you if you are out of warranty.....
here is a random thread i found but I have a bad feeling about the person.... Carry on at your own risk but back up your current efs, it may be recoverable but can move to a unrecoverable state after some repair attempts so, we can have hope....

Thank you again, eatsleep! I really appreciate your continuing help.
I've gone about as deeply into this as I think I can, without trying even more bits of dodgy software from around the web which might make the situation worse. So, I think my next step should be to take it to a reputable service centre on a no-fix-no-fee basis. If they can't fix it either, then I'll regard it as a write-off and - on the grounds that there is nothing to lose - I'll have one last go with anything/everything I can find on the net.
Whatever the outcome I will report back so that others can benefit from my mistakes!
Thanks everyone who tried so hard to help - have a good weekend.

Yeah, samsung can definitely help you, but again, be sure to make a backup of current efs to get back if situation gets worse!
And if you fail, then we can try some softwares out there, which might me improper to discuss here, but leave that for only when everything fails....
Wish you all the best
Sooo, my gf and I have same phones. S7 edge. I made back up of mine superstock rom. And made back up of hers rom. We decided to change phones becouse I bought rose gold very cheap and she has gold. Restored her back up, and by mistake recovered her efs in my phone. Now imei shows 000000. As I said, my back up corrupted, cant open on pc, twrp shows errors of corupted file...how can i recover my imei? Flashing stock clean rom via odin or samsung swich doesnt help...

Time to send it back to Samsung for a new board. That's if they have one. Other then that you can try flashing a compete stock rom but normally that doesn't happen.
You learned a lesson. Never restore a backup from a different device.

Without an IMEI/EFS backup that was created before doing this, you're not gonna find much of a solution for restoring the device.

Wait wait,
You can't text or connect to the network?
Try flashing a official firmware and see if the IMEI matches...
It's not that simple to modify your IMEI n.o, special softwares are required to do this.... It's stored in .nv_data
Don't you have any efs backups?
IMEI getting corrupt is seen many times in s3 and note 2 devices....
And also, modifying your iMEi is illegal, but people out there use a software to do it.... May not be good to discuss this software here...
And one more thing, does your phone shows a generic IMEI number when you dial *#06* ?

Bricked S6 please help

Hi guys
recently bought a s6 from ebay which was frozen on S6 logo. Basically managed to clear cache and factory reset from recovery but that didn't work, anyway I DL the O2 firmware and odin and put it into download mode I get a fail on odin when trying to install the rom
The phone has knox 1 and also has red writing SW Rev. Check Fail. Device: 3 Binary: 1.
I'm unsure what to do and if theres any chance for me to recover.
Many thanks
Mav
it failed because you flashed an incompatible Firmware.
where did it stopped flashing in odin? In sboot.bin?
If thats the case, you need to download proper firmware/country for your device.
Let me know what country is ur fone made of.
Hi thanks for your reply.
I managed to get it working by installing root and unikernel, it boots into O2 the firmwarw is 5.1.1
Only problem now is imei is 3500000000006
And it wont make calls dont know if imei is corrupt ir they sold me a stolen or lost phone?
I may install tw recovery and custom rom and see if that works.
Any suggestions?
Hi
Ive managed to sort out and get it to work infact typing on it now. Its currently rooted custom rom and twrp. I e managed also to restore original imei number so overall im quite pleased with myslef lol.
Anyway one last problem i have is ive tried all sims but none work i know ita picking up signal as the bar shows top right. Also chexk my settings.
Ive tried automatically and manually going to register networks but it says unable to connect try again later. I know uts not my area as my wifes s6 works perfectly. Sim also def works. The phone also picks up when a new sim has been inserted so i dont think its sim slot.
Any ideas guys
OK new update if anyone can help I'd really appreciate.
Installed new vador rom Imei reverted back and serial number is all zeros
Is this something to do with baseband if so how can I fix read somewhere about ariza patch but that was s3 4 etc.
Thanks
Mav
1. Your EFS is corrupted. The IMEI you see is a generic one, phone will be useless for network provider only wifi will work.
2. The one thing that caused this is by flashing an old bootloader to your phone. Thats why youve encountered Check Fail error on Download mode.
Happened to me also but got it fixed in the end.
OK thanks for the info how do I fix? I do have my wife's s6 but that's not rooted and don't want to root can I restore the efs
Many thanks
Mav

I think I know one thread that has a firmware downloader with ultra fast download speed you may try searching it.
I dont know if it will help, but you may be able to successfully flash the firmware but many of those who have problems were unable to boot the phone due to corrupted efs data.
Here's my way of fixing it (if you still have intact efs). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63693480&postcount=28
But if its already wiped, there's no way you can retrieve it unless bringing it to samsung or any repair shop.
Anyways, mine was fixed (IMEI) using Octopus box repair tool. Since I cant do anything to recover my generic imei.

As far as i know if your EFS partition is corrupt and you do not have a back up of the EFS partition to restore which you probably dont as you bought this as broken then sim capability is dead, im not sure of any other way to fix this unless you have the intact efs partition
Hi
How can I tell if the efs is corrupt it shows a baseband it now shows the correct ime I
It just won't connect to network it says try again.
I can post a screen print of efs folder on es Explorer if anyone knows what it should look like
Here are screen prints but I think I'm speaking to myself lol
Hi there i spent months on fixing issues like this (i now have a tool that takes care of all this) , best thing you can do is flash to a rom where the original imei came back do a backup of the efs, flash to a orginal rom ( latest rom) make sure its the right one for your device, connect to kies, install the rom again root and restore the efs failing that the imei is blocked use checkmend.com the uk version if your from the uk, message me if you need help

Your rom, recovery and kernel doesnt have to do with corrupted efs.
Only way is to bring it to repair service using box tools to re enter/validate your imei so that you can connect to your network provider. There is no other way around other than retrieving your efs and installing it or thru repair service.
You may now relax yourself at finding ways to connect, I assure it wont help trying to flash and flash and flash stuff to your phone.
---------- Post added at 08:46 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:37 AM ----------
Uhm can you send sms or make calls? It seems you have a valid Imei
Ok ive tried all stock roms including o2 and a uk btu one but no luck they all do the same thing get frozen on Samsung logo then I flash unikernel and it boots.
When checking my efs folder I can see no modem file I'm now wondering could that be the fault? so I downloaded modem and BL for 5.02 and 5.11 both will not flash via odin I get a fail message and on device check fail device: 3 binary: 1 messgage in red?????.
So I'm a little lost, I was wondering if I managed to root my wifes s6 which is virtually new could I back up her efs folder then copy it into mine and just amend the imei to my original would that work? also is there a way of rooting my wifes phone without triggering knox?
Any other suggestions guys I really don't know what bootloader was on it to start with or rom is there any way for me to find this out?, also another weird thing when the o2 uk roms install they install german apps?
Thanks guys
Ive repaired EFS Partitions with scripts downloaded from links at xda.
For example i trashed my EFS partition on my note 3 so it caused hard reboots after android booted up and it couldnt be fixed with anything else than the EFS partition repair scripts.
Edit: friend repaired his Note 4 also.
Thanks but where can I find these scripts as I've looked everywhere and if I did find how do I go about doing it. At the moment when I try to flash modem and bootloader it fails.

[Q] IMEI or EFS erased

Dear S6 Edge users
I was trying to install a new ROM on my samsung galaxy edge s6 (SCV31 g925j). And i wiped everything in TWRP before installing it. it seems liek i have wiped EFS with IMEI too. :silly:
Now, i have another device, so i took a backup of EFS in twrp and tried to resore it. However, my IMEI is still null.
Flashing stock ROM did not help too.
Could anyone please let me know if i can restore EFS/IMEI somehow? Can i copy it from my other device that actually works?
Many thanks
Bump
Technically you can restore efs backup from another phone.
Would it work without any problems, that is another question, but I honestly doubt it.
You could (if out of warranty) take phone to a 3rd party repair shop for fixing IMEI with Z3x box, or similar device, but some other issues (network, SIM, as in my case) could arise, not necessery, but could happen.

Thanks for reply. I guess i will have to try as many repair methods as possible (using root) and see if it helps.
If you manage to fix it without a box, please keep us posted, me and I belive lots of others would like to rebuild/repair efs.
Myself included
