factory reset my phone - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For some reason, I have to factory reset my phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/disappear-hard-disk-t3222734#post63254887
Just wanna know, since I have titanium backup on my nexus 5 devices. Does a factory reset (or any kind of wipes) wipe the internal storage of my phone (including the backup).
If so, how should i proceed with my backup if i wanna factory reset the phone
Thanks.

Wait what, why do u need to do a factory reset, and yes, as the name suggests, it leaves the device in the same state that u received it in, blank, but why would u need to wipe the device, I'm going to check out the link, bcuz now I'm interested
I have never seen this happen before and I've owned nothing but Nexus devices, well, to answer your question I have to ask a few, are u rooted, do u have a recovery installed? If the answer to those two questions is no, then connect to a computer, copy the files in your internal storage and place them in a safe folder on your computer, proceed to wipe the device as stated, then copy the files back onto the device, should take care of your internal storage.

Thanks

That might work, in theory it should, as long as u go back to 5.1.1, or u could just make a data only backup in twrp, download the factory image, whether it be 6.0 or 5.1.1, use the pc and adb to manually flash the images, do this
1) make data only backup, move that backup to pc
2) extract the images, both the tgz file and the zip file inside to a safe location, u only need the radio, boot, system, and userdata images if 6.0, just system and userdata if 5.1.1
3) use adb to flash these images like this:
fastboot flash radio "radio.img"
fastboot reboot bootloader
fastboot flash boot "boot.img"
fastboot reboot bootloader
fastboot flash system "system.img"
fastboot reboot bootloader
fastboot format userdata
fastboot reboot bootloader
Then boot to recovery, flash your backup and that's should be it

ok, quick question arise
let say i make a titanium backup files (from 5.1.1) and move them to my pc for future use. Can I restore the files done under 5.1.1 and restore them to a marshmallow ?

No u can't use the factory reset button in settings as the stock room won't recognize twrp, u can however use twer and wipe cache, data, and dalvik cache, or just do the reg factory reset wipe under wipe which should work as well as a factory reset, why are u trying to factory reset tho, if I might ask

because my nexus 5 showing 14gb instead of 32gb. I heard a factory reset will help the problem. I just dont know which factory reset (recovery or in setting) to do.
but if i use twrp wiping cache, data and dalvik (leaving system and internal storage alone).... will it wipe my lollipop os too? will it wipe my storage too?
what is the different between the factory reset under setting and the factory reset under twrp?
sorry for so many questions....

Ok so to answer your question, u can wipe anything EXCEPT Internal Storage, system, and boot and you won't lose anything, personally I would do this, boy twrp and use the regular factory reset, this will error everything except got the OS and internal storage, if that didn't work then I would manually format the partitions

[Q] ROMs not working

Hi:
I need ROMS that allow for bluetooth tethering. I have gotten pyr-o-ice_ICS_1.0.2 to work, but it does not seem to want to use 4G. The best I can get is 3G. I am also having problems with some apps I use a lot (like Kindle). So, I would like to try some other ROMS. I have tried Wildchild_IcE_Rom_v0.9 and cm-9.1.0-doubleshot, but both get stuck on their splash screen during boot.
This phone still has S-ON, but I am flashing a new boot.img with each new OS.
So, can I get these ROMs to work? Or, can you guys suggest a ROM I should be using?
Thanks.
What's your wipe method. And are you fastbooting the new kernel? Most likely its one of two things, a bad download (md5 sum not being checked or a failure to wipe the device.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I am using the instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508556. I
Extract the "boot.img" file from the zip file on my PC
Boot the phone into fastboot mode and connect it to the PC
Run fastboot flash boot boot.img. I am making sure I am using the right one.
Reboot the phone into Recovery
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache parition
Flash the zip file.
Reboot the phone
Isn't that right?
I have downloaded cm-9.1.0-doubleshot twice and still no go.
Yeah but only for flashing the boot.img, so if you followed that exactly and only did what that guide says you didn't wipe the device in recovery at all so that's why its failing to boot

Format system, data, cache, and dalvik( in mounts menu ), wipe data factory reset then flash
Sent from a KangBanged JellyBAM
You can always
fastboot wipe system -w
Being you'll need to be @ a pc to fastboot flash the kernel
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk 2
And ALWAYS flash the kernel last. You're going to have a few that work fine but 80% of developers wipe the boot partition when setting the mount points from the updater script before starting the new ROM flash. Not all....but most do.
Thanks! I got things working.
For the record, I
Extract the "boot.img" file from the zip file on my PC
Reboot the phone into Recovery
Perform a nandroid backup
Wipe data/factory reset
Format system, data, and cache (my machine does not have dalvik. Also, I think data and cache were already done by the previous wipes)
Boot the phone into fastboot mode and connect it to the PC
Run fastboot flash boot boot.img
Reboot the phone into Recovery
Flash the zip file
Reboot the phone.
"fastboot wipe system -w" did not work for me. On my version wipe is not an option. Looking on the web, I found "fastbook erase system -w". However when I tried that, I got an error that said "FAILED <remote not allowed>"
Thanks again
Im sorry wasn't thinking
fastboot erase system -w
Is the proper command, you aren't allowed because you don't have an engieneering bootloader, I would definitely recommend one as it can help out wonders if you run into issues in the future

[Q] Lost sdcard after restart during cache wipping

I restart my phone because it did a lot of time to reset cache. I regered the time I did it but was late.
Now my phone opens but does not have mobile network and cannot access my /sdcard/
From recovery I can see my sdcard. What can I Do?
Are you fully stock? If so, then format /cache partition and then perform a factory reset via stock recovery.
If you aren't fully stock, and use a custom recovery then I would suggest you to perform a factory reset from the custom recovery (it won't wipe internal sd)..
If it still doesn't work then you need to go back to fully stock by flashing the factory images from Google.
- Sent from an IceCold Hammerhead!
Yep, just keep wiping / formatting cache until it fixes or fastboot flash the stock cache.img

Just flash the stock recovery via fastboot and then format cache multiple times until it successfully formats! Your data won't be lost.
Since you rebooted before the cache was formatted, it has ended in a messed up /cache partition.
If you want to backup data, you can use adb pull from recovery...
See above
Edit.. By that I meant my previous post

You can try to restore the backup but I doubt if it will solve the issue. However, there's no harm in trying..
The cache partition is messed up.. It needs to be formatted first. That's why I suggested you to go back to stock recovery and format cache...
I have tried wiping cache on Philz Touch and twrp and it didn't solve my problem. I had to format the cache partition using the stock recovery and voila! Everything was fixed.

Flashing the stock cache.img won't wipe your saved data or backups.. There's no harm in trying.. However, if you're skeptical, adb pull all your important stuff and then do the flashes!
Finally I flashed cache.img and seems that everything is good again. Thank you for your help.

I have TWRP on the phone currently, but how do i flash the factory image?? i have just downloaded the factory image and ran the start.bat folder with the factory image in the folder but its still stuck in boot.
followed Timmaaa's guide, sorted thanks!

How do I decrypt my device

So I encrypted my moto 4g and all went fine. However I wanted to flash and install an app via my recovery(my device is rooted and I got custom recovery but I'm on stock rom) but It kept saying it could not access the data of the phone. I figured this was because it is encrypted. I also tried restoring an older backup from when the phone was not encrypted but that would not work either. If I do a factory wipe in recovery that won't work either. If I enter the Android settings and choose data wipe the phone starts to bootloop.
What can I do to decrypt my phone?
Did you encrypt the phone using stock recovery?
No I encrypted with the custom recovery.

No I have not, haven't had time to try, I assume here are some guides about it and I will look into it when I have time.
Just wanted to say that I fixed it, had to reflash the whole device with flashboot, then I re rooted it and restored an backup.
Glad it worked out for you.

You can flash the stock images via fastboot, that will erase everthing and get you back to stock. You can then install a custom recovery and flash roms again.

There is a command to wipe user data, see the below guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2839471
Reason!
Thanks for your expert replies.
The reason for asking was and is for you to know in depth what happened.
My OPOs BL is unlocked and rooted.......at times try other ROMs like Hydrogen, RR, etc.
I was surprised to see and empty Baidu folder size 80 bytes shown by ES File manger, after I flashed back COS 12.
The way I flash is firstly reboot to TWRP, Format > type yes, than Factory reset, than Advanced Wipe ALL except OTG, power off the OPO.
Power on in fastboot mode, connect to pc and flash COS ROM using those commands.
All is good, except the empty Baidu Folder, fail to understand how did it persist.
Other thing is when I later flash TWRP over stock, and than when I perform a factory reset before flashing another ROM, see red SD card errors? ........have to keep rebooting to TWRP.
The way I flash is TWRP > Format type yes > Factory reset > Wipe all except OTG > Mount OTG-USB containing the zip, install zip swipe flash > once done > Reboot. (before reboot don't clear dalvik and cache).
If I take screen capture of TWRP they wont be saved in Gallery.
TWRP 2.7.8.0 when flashed on start up showed this.........
"TWRP has detected an unmodified partition. TWRP can leave your partition unmodified to make it easier for you to take official updates. TWRP will be unable to prevent the stock ROM from replacing from replacing TWRP and will not offer to root your device. installing zips or performing adb operations may still modify the system partition.
Never show this screen during boot again."
To sum up my queries are:
1. How can I perform a deep clean of OPO, and than flash COS 12 using fastboot, so I don't see any Baidu etc empty folders.
2. Than flash TWRP and and if needed can take it's screen captures.
3. Later if required can flash new custom ROM with out issues.
Bottom line to clean my OPOs Storage that includes SD card.
Btw my OPO isn't giving any issues or bugs and working great, no EFS issues etc.........
After reading all care to edit/correct what am I doing incorrect?
Thanks again.
Add
Is this the command to format user data?

I have seen people querying the Baidu folder before (i have it myself), it seems to be a folder left by ES file explorer, have you ever installed that? It doesnt seem to be anything malicious, although a lot people were spooked, thinking it was spyware of some sort.

Below is the command for flashing the userdata file via fastboot. If you have downloaded the fastboot image files, I think it basically pushes a blank file to overwrite/format the user data space/parition.
Code:
fastboot flash userdata userdata_64G.img
