I'm getting my second phone and its the Asus zenfone. When I first get it what should I do? Should I first charge it fully and then use it or should I just use it and then plug it in later? I really don't want to mess up the battery because my first phone I ever got was the s3 and after four months the battery didn't work that well and two years later now my phone drains quickly that I can't charge my phone with the charger. I connect my phone to my ps4 to charge it. So besides the battery are there any other things I should do? I've never rooted my phone before so should I do it for my zenfone 2? If so what skin should I use, I heard cyanogen mod is very good. Also how can I transfer my contacts and pictures/music to my new phone? If I use a new Google account for my phone can I still transfer my pictures that are associated with my old gmail that is associated with my s 3. Sorry for the long post, I'm really excited for my phone and I want it to rub the best and last me at least 2 years or more.

Hi, welcome to XDA, and welcome to the Zenfone 2 family!
If it's all right, I will try to answer each question in point form...
Usually when you get a new phone, the battery level is around 60%. I, being impatient (especially with this one), plugged it in then turned it on to use it, until battery level reached 100%, then unplugged.
There is probably big, conflicting discussion about this, but messing up your first charge probably isn't going to ruin your battery or take months off of it's life.
I think best practice is try not to let the level fall below 40% (but don't panic if it does and your day is not yet over), but more importantly, don't leave it on the charger for way longer than needed to get to 100% (the phone's ROM has an estimate of when battery reached 100% to help) - in the same token don't panic if you lay for charge and then fall asleep, waking up in the middle of the night, or even morning when you realize it's still on the charger - just unplug .
If you have to charge your S3 with your PS4, it sounds more like your charger adapter died on you.
If you never rooted, although you are missing out on a wide world, there are consequences in that world (safeguards are there for a reason). Bravery is a prerequisite. In short, if you don't need root, I wouldn't bother.
CyanogenMod is a possibility for this device, once your bootloader is unlocked (and only specific versions of the stock ROM allow you to do this). But honestly, for stability, stick with stock for a while, and if you hate it (I personally like it), then can try something different.
If you have used Google services for everything ... photos (Picasa or whatever it's now called), contacts, et cetera, all that should translate to the new phone once you sign in. Music, you will have to copy over from your old phone, the easiest way is to connect to PC via data cable, enable MTP, and collect the files. Then reverse direction for the ZF2.
No worries!

TLDR: Skip to TLDR near the end!
Well, this is probably the tipping point that will make me demand a new phone from Magenta, because this is getting out of hand. My phone will periodically stop charging, for seemingly no reason at all. Usually its when it has relatively low power already that it decides it doesn't want to recognize the cable being plugged in.
Usually, I will just pull the battery and drain the remaining power via the power button, put the battery back in and all is well. Lately, it happened that it stopped charging and didn't respond to battery pulls, then got so low that it refused to even boot (flashing empty battery icon). This lasted about a day and after I had went into the T-Mobile store (Which they MADE me drive 30 minutes to the store to be there in person so they could hand me a piece of paper saying they'd mail me a new unit. Bull**** in and of itself.) the phone decides it wants to start charging again. After a few more frustrated battery pulls and doing nothing new with it.
When I get my new phone (no new battery), I put the battery in that one and use it, and all seems fine. This one has worse screen bleed (top left corner was pretty much a spotlight), but I'll take that for a working phone at this point. A few days ago I was just heading out on a 3 hour trip for a short vacation when the phone reboots on me while I'm listening to podcasts. Never had this happen with the other 2 G2X's I've had. Yesterday, the thing decides to stop charging as well, but a battery pull while the device was still on did the trick and it charged again.
Once I got home I figured I'd use the original G2X, as that has everything still on it, and migrating those app settings and data is a pain. Also, if it has worse bleed, reboot problems, and the same battery issue, its worse than what I already have.
(TLDR)
Now to my current problem. The phone, once again, stopped charging and has again discharged to where it wont boot. My questions:
1) Is there a way to recover my battery without just letting it sit and praying it charges again?
2) What is the underlying issue here that could cause this? Bad software? Bad hardware (in the phone itself)? Bad battery?
3) What is the best way about getting a new phone for free (or as close to free as possible), preferably an upgrade like the Sensation 4G? I don't want to deal with my local store, as they have been proven to not know ****, and the first line of defense on the phone isnt much better.
Well i am not an expert here but Just by process of elimination it seems to be the battery. They gave you a new phone and not a new battery and now it is doing the same thing. It has to be the battery so I would go back to the store and tell them that they gave you a **** phone as a replacement and it was the battery that was the problem the whole time. They shold be able to give you a new phone and battery. Tell thewm the screen bleed is terrible and the phone yoyu had was really good except for the battery issue. Maybee someone else can give a second opinion about that battery though. Dont just go on my words I am not a pro. Good luck man.

I already posted this in the appropriate forum, but didn't see much of a response and it technically is a question so here it is:
What the title said. And I searched this on XDA and found several threads but none that cater to my exact problem, and if there are then it was simply because I didn't want to/don't have the time to go through hundreds of threads. Anyways, My Xperia Play (R800a) from Rogers (Canadian Service Provider) has been nothing but trouble for me. I got it Christmas day in 2011 and it worked beautifully for around 6 or 7 months. Then it started acting up. Like battery draining real fast, then not charging, then charging, then working for a day then not working for a week and then another day it worked then it just died (or at least the battery).
So I gave up on it and popped my SIM in my old iPhone 3G. Well I recently just bought another BST-41 XPLAY battery from amazon and I have had probably a 1% increase in some sort of success with trying to bring this thing back to life. I remember I rooted it but I never didn't anything with the root. Moving along, the phone with its original battery would blink 3 times in a pattern for maybe 2-3 minutes then there would be no blinking lights. With my new battery it just continuously blinking 3 times in the same pattern it did with my old battery.
Phoned Sony support yelled at them, its not on warranty anymore and I don't know what to do with it. I have read it could be the charger or the USB port, or cord. But right now with the 3 blinking red lights I think it means its charging... I just don't know. I wish this phone would come back to life already. I tried PC companion too and it doesn't recognize my phone. Oh and when I charge it on my PC I get the same blinking red light 3x and its also just doing that continuously.
If one of you have a solution to this, without linking me to another thread, because I have spent the past year looking at ways to fix it and I ran into some threads on here that haven't helped me, then I would be forever in your debt! Right now I am on my knees praying for this thing its just ridiculous.
Hi guys,
Been having issues with charging for the past couple of days. When I plug my phone into the charger it states that it's charging, but nothing really happens. The troubleshooting so far:
Have tested it on multiple different chargers, all having same problem. However, my Nexus7 tablet will charge normally on these chargers, so we can rule out it's charger related.
Tested for differences with the phone switched on or off. When phone is switched off it will charge, but not with the speed it normally does.
Running CM11 Snapshot M9. Did a clean install. Battery does not charge normally (read 1% gain per 20 min) on most stripped down version (without gapps + personal apps)
Looks like it's battery related. But I find it difficult to rule out what's causing my phone to act funny. The weird thing is that sometimes my phone will go for a decent charge, but this happens so randomly that it's hard to find any form of sense in this process. Also, when the phone is on and charging, the battery light will sometimes turn off. But when I activate my phone again, the battery light will bleep on as if nothing happened and everything is functioning normally (which is clearly doesn't).
Does anybody have an idea how I can fix this? Any helpful tips that can point me into the right direction to figure out what's causing this? Many thanks in advance!
did some more testing - can anyone help me out?
After some additional testing I'm fairly sure that it's either battery or chip related:
USB debugging does not work at all (storage is set to MTP). When I open Android File Transfer my Mac will recognise the Nexus 7 tablet, but not the Nexus 5. Debugging is switched on in Developer options.
When I try to use adb or fasboot, my device is not listed either, nor are any commands (directed towards phone) executed through bootloader.
In the about Phone section I went to check the Battery info. It will state correctly that the phone is being charged through AC or USB (depending on wether the device is connected to laptop or charger).
Does anyone have an idea how I can figure out if it's chip or battery related? I desperately want to find this out, because I bought my phone in The States and live in Europe... So in the worst case scenario the phone needs to go back to the US due to bureaucratic policies. Already had to go through this horrible proces half a year ago with a bad NAND chip, really want to avoid the hassle and lose my phone for at least a month. So if it's a battery thing I rather order a new one and replace it myself
Really really hope someone can shed light on this issue, running out of luck and options. Please guys, please
sounds like the usb connection, physical, is going. if it doesnt charge but randomly will, fastboot nor adb see it, i think its an usb connection issue. i had the same with my nexus one a long time ago, if i wiggled the the connection when it was connected, sometimes i could get it to charge some. fortunately, it isnt an expensive repair, and yours should still be under warranty.

Thanks for the reply, really appreciate it How much you reckon it will cost? Also, can I do this at any decent phone recovery shop? As stated previously, really want to avoid sending the phone back to the US. Once again thanks!

i paid $35 3 years ago(?) at a local repair shop.
@simms22: ordered a USB portal online and replaced it by myself. Phone works again. Thanks for the tip!
I have had the p900 for about two years now. Rooted it some time ago and installed CyanogenMod without any problems. But just recently, when I tried to reset the tablet, it got stuck on twrp. I thought I would let the battery drain and see what would happen afterwards, but now I can't get it to turn on anymore, even though I let it charge. The tablet really doesn't do anything anymore, can't go into download mode and it isn't regocnized by my computer either. So I think it's bricked, but since I'm not really the most tech savvy person, I thought I'd ask here... Could anyone tell me if this sounds like it really is bricked, or if there is still hope?
I'm wondering if your battery discharged too far down, basically killing it. Once that happens, it no longer holds any charge. I've seen that happen on an older battery (actually happened on one of my laptops!). You could try removing the back of the tablet and disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it after a few minutes, then putting the charger back on and see if you get lights. (if you're going to do that, might as well have a new one in front of you and just replace it - easy to do, and Amazon has batteries for a decent price from a few different vendors - just did that to my Note Pro last week. Youtube it for directions, it's easy if you are patient. I used this one, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N4KRSVW and it is working well - even got rid of the flickering screen around 50% power and below...
I'm having an issue with a 3 year old Google pixel where the phone is no longer bootable due to it dying anytime it is turned on. Symptoms started about a year ago, the device would occasionally die randomly when opening apps especially with a camera like Snapchat. The issue was originally very infrequent but got more and more common until every app that is opened would kill the device if not plugged in. At this stage anytime the device died it wouldn't use to boot until plugged in. About 4 months ago it started dying even if it is plugged in and now it refuses to boot rom or stay alive in recovery long enough to even decrypt the device. Device is also unstable if plugged into a computer as it constantly reconnects and disconnects. The really odd part about all of this is booting into fastboot works just fine and it will stay in fastboot as long as it's plugged in. I'm thinking I'm gonna have to tear down the device and replace the battery manually but I'm not 100% sure if this is the cause so I'm asking here for confirmation first. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I need to get data off the device to move to my new pixel3
EDIT: Well, f*** me, after looking through q&a section for 2 minutes I found other people have started having this issue around same time frame as me and it turns out the problem is the motherboard is shot which I was also thinking in the back of my head but didn't want it to be true. I'm so not spending $300 to replace the Mobo of a 3 and a half year old phone, but I do need to get the data off of it. My understanding is that adb DOESNT work over fastboot so I think I'm gonna try to plug it into my laptop and see if I can get twrp alive long enough to get any kind of filesystem access.
Honestly, it sounds like the battery is just dead. The phone dying at X% when using snapchat is like the first sign that the battery is getting weak and can't push out the required power. The way you described it, it just sounds like it got progressively worse until the battery is complete trash. The batteries are like $5-15, so might as well try it if you think you can do it without breaking the screen. I just did it for mine.

It's not the battery. Many other sources confirm that this is a motherboard problem. At first it definitely seemed like a battery problem given original symptoms but at this point there is a wide range of random symptoms that point to the board being shot.
On a brighter note I've managed to keep the device alive in twrp long enough to pull data off by plugging into a computer. Wall charger would cause it to die despite charger working fine with several other devices
A bad battery can leak onto the board and fry the board, so you may both be right.
