Hey fellas,
I'm a huge fan of the old school LucasArts games like DoTT, Full Throttle, Indiana Jones and games like the Leisure Suit Larry series. I was extremely excited when I read about SCUMMVM for Android. That excitement died when I then read that it currently work only on 1.5/1.6.
Anyone know if any progress has been made with the 2.1/2.2 versions? Can I help in any way?
Thanks! Let's get this ball rolling.
Turns out there IS progress!
http://anddev.at.ua/news/2010-6-2-1-0-1
Testing it out now.
Very interested in this - never really got it set up when I had a G1.
Thanks for reminding me My biggest loss moving to android was no scummvm..
Imagine running it on the nexus, using the trackball for mouse movement
There was some movement around 2.1 with a buggered beta of some sort as far as i remember, but we all need some froyo support now!
Is there still only one dude working on the port?

@rickytenzer: let us know how it works out

I tried the tremor version for no camera (since n1 doesn't have a dedicated cam button)
It takes 25mb worth of space..wow, apk boots fine on froyo, trackball support for mouse with left click. Unfortunately I'm at work and my roms are at home, so i haven't tried a game yet.. very exiting, anybody else tried yet?
Jesus ****ing christ, it's amazing! I was able to boot up DoTT with ease. Didn't get a chance to play with it yet (@ work ) but it seemed to be working well. The back button even acted as escape and skipped the movies! Awesome.
The touchscreen/trackball combo is great because sometimes the trackball moves too slowly so you can generally locate yourself with the touchscreen and then hone in with the ball.
I'll give more updates later!

I tried vorbis no camera. Any reason why you went with tremor?
Most ROMs you can get online legally and for free as they're abandonware. I just downloaded DoTT with no problems! And they're only around 10MB
Omgomgomg, didn't have patience too wait, so i downloaded freeware from scummvm site.. went for bass floppy version and it is beautiful
Sound, menu, everything
Will try my dott CD version and samnmax later..
Just went for tremor version because the dev couldn't get it to work on his Samsung, so i assumed tremor might be better/ tougher on the hardware and n1 has nice hardware
Dunno the difference, has to look into it. Does savegames work? Haven't had time to try (@work)
-e
Haven't tried yet. App settings don't save yet. I realized that the DoTT available online is sans speech so I'm going to get the full versions later, through obviously completely legal means of course
So excited! Have a 5 hour train ride coming in a couple of weeks. This will definite keep me occupied!
As promised, I got my hands on a buttload of games
Day of the Tentacle
Full Throttle
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
The Secret of Monkey Island
Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
The Curse of Monkey Island eek: I can't believe this is a ScummVM game!)
Sam & Max Hit the Road
Simon the Sorcerer
Simon the Sorcerer 2
And as expected, they ALL run flawlessly! I'm so psyched. HOURS of gameplay. And I have never played the first Indy and I'm not sure about the second Simon.
WOO!
The emulator runs fine on my Nexus One, but when I try to load a game, its can't find the zip in the directory.

Because it's not looking for a zip
Extract the zips to a directory, then choose that directory when adding a game.
Sooo, is this easy to set up? Might just have to put it on my phone tonight.
Ricky - please would you share the place you got your games from?

Check your PMs. As for installation, it's a joke! Just download the apk, get the files on your SD card and you'll figure it out from there.
I think it's best to put them all in a folder on your SD card root called "ScummVM". I don't recall settings being saved until I had everything in that folder.
Thanks again, that's my evening sorted!
Thanks guys, I figured I had to unzip them. Works great!
Today the 21th in the Amazon Appstore the free-for-a-day game is Peggle! However, even just trying to see the info, or maybe read the reviews, or look at the screenshots rudely pops up the message Not Compatible... And downloading it from the appstore is of course out of the question.
First, change the title to say Peggle, not Pegger...
Secondly, I just got done playing a few levels on my Tab... With a little know how posts like this wouldn't be relevant... (Like the Plants vs. Zombies post... "OMG!! IT'S OUT BUT IT DOESN'T WORK FOR TAB!!" ... Or netflix... same deal)
The trick would obviously be to make the market think you are on a different device... Changing your build.prop is quite simple (assuming root is in place), and this is what you need to change in order for the market to not think your device is what it really is... Mine was "My Wall" for a while to download Peggle.
Than, just to be safe, fire up Chainfire 3D and load up the Tegra 2/Nvidia driver, runs smooth as butter...
It's not wise to change your build.prop to much because a lot of programs revolve around it (such as swype's configuration/save files)
ALWAYS back up ANYTHING you change in your root folder... copy the build.prop over to your sd card in a backup folder before changing it.
p.s. I'm not responsible nor liable for anything you do to your device because of what you read here... I'm just a conduit of information. I also will likely not help you with any "OMG MY TAB IS BRICKED" posts because of this... If you are brave enough to change anything in your root folder, than you should do your RESEARCH!
I've changed the title, what was I thinking? Anyway, I admit was hoping somebody knowledgeable would know a way to circumvent that message, and tell us.
I have found system/build.prop, but what property did you change in that file to change the model? I noticed a number of GT-P1000's Do all of them need to be changed? You changed it to "My Wall"? Does it need to be that, or is it anything but SGT?
Thanks!
I downloaded it onto my sgs2, and then just sent it via bluetooth to my tab. Works perfectly.(I do have amazon appstore installed on both my devices.)
You are on the right path, I changed the first 3 references (maybe 4) toward the beginning of the file. Please be sure you back the file up unchanged on your sd card. When you've downloaded the game I recommend going back to that original file.
You can change it to whatever you want.

Using the Amazon app store, I added the game on my Vibrant.
Then went to the tablet's Amazon app store and clicked on the install button.

Yup, there are various ways to trick it into working... I don't have a second device that supports it, so I just did it "the hard way" I suppose.
The initial check is right as you click download... so bypassing it on one device than downloading on another is logical... Kind of like the PSN store and multiple PS3's.
Paraphrasing my comments over at Amazon to add this forum's conversation...
I've got a Galaxy Tab (SCH-I800) and I was being told I can't use this with my Tab. What the hell?? How do you write a game that can't run on a Galaxy Tab?
Anyway, I "purchased" it on the web site using my laptop computer and the Amazon website, went back to the Tab and installed it from my available-to-download apps and it installed fine and it ran just fine.
I've played Peggle on my Xbox 360 and on my Nintendo DSi before as well, but this Android version feels a little sloppy (the opening dialog asking for username is blank, the music doesn't loop properly--it plays out and fades, then restarts--as if it's repeatedly playing an audio track that fades at the end). Otherwise, gameplay works great, zoom-in works great, etc. I don't understand why it's been blocked from installing on a bunch of systems that clearly are able to run it just fine. (another fellow with an Asus eee Transformer in another review had the exact same problem and suggested that way around the block that I described earlier.) Am I overlooking some detail as to why we're being denied this from these devices?
btyork, I'll keep that build.prop in mind, I have a feeling that may come in handy. It wasn't needed this time though, because the other-phone-trick worked beautifully. It worked just like ipnekgs described. I just installed the appstore on the wife's SGS, logged in with my account, and downloaded Peggle on it without a hitch. After that I switched back to my Tab, and Lo!, it was ready for installation on the SGT. Lovely!
I AM intrigued by stoney73's remark... Can you install an app on one phone and then send it by bluetooth to another one? Or just download the app instead of installing it? How does that work, does an installation from the appstore leave a file behind somewhere? I'd love to know where!
Thanks guys!
BTW, I'm not claiming it doesn't run on our beloved Tab, Amazon refuses to install it, claiming it's Not Compatible. In cases like this I always like to try it out myself, to see if the claim is true, as often it isn't. Chuzzle for instance definitely has graphical problems, but perseverance paid off with Peggle, as it runs beautifully, no problems at all so far (though I've played just a couple of levels). I wonder what possesed Amazon to refuse us even to download it. I've haven't seen that one before, and I've downloaded quite a few apps.
'Buying' it from the website and then installing it from 'my apps' on the tab worked here.
It may not be fully compatible with a stock galaxy tab.. I have had zero problem with it running on my tab using overcome hermes and chainfire 3D using the nvidia driver...

Same for me, played quite a few levels with no issues. I have the Alpha HC ROM installed on my SGT
Maybe it's an error. My Tab is rooted, but apart from that it's stock: not flashed, no Chainfire3D, just stock JMK, but Peggle seems to work flawlessly.
It works perfectly fine on the Tab. I have played a couple hours of it with no problem.
I did have to "buy" it from my Nexus One, but then I was able to install it on my Tab right from the Amazon app. The download took forever.

The same has happened with a few android market apps, which then require the workaround, and end up working perfectly.

ended up finding a download link somewhere, can't remember where now.
completed adventure mode and never had a single problem.
like PvZ though, it's a big install (not so much on the SGT though)
For everyone like me who has been trying to get OAC running on the TF101 dont bother it will not run on honeycomb no matter what device you try to emulate it with in your build.prop
Feel free to prove me wrong.. World of Midgard can't come soon enough
i can confirm this as well, tried many diff models in the builds prop file and no go.

My thoughts exactly. Gameloft has been pretty unique for offering almost console quality games for android. By the end of the year, they should have some pretty stiff competition.
World of Midgard can capitalize on this. Cant wait.

My expectation is that Gamelofts' arrogance and guarded attitude toward the progress of development to the wider android community will eventually ostracize themselves from that market. Developers, such as the creators of World of Midgard, that take an open and collaborative approach to their development are noticed and create the precedent. Time will tell.
Bummer. I enjoyed playing this on my TF. Now it says I have to update to continue. Perhaps we'll find another patched apk. Really silly that all that is stopping us is not being on the "guest list". It would work fine if we could side step the device check.

There is hope. Below is an excerpt from a recent email I received from gameloft:
Thank you for your letter.
The game was never compatible with Asus Transformer.
We are aware there are some breaches in the Android Marketplace that allows some customers to purchase games that are not compatible with their device, but unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it.
We do plan on supporting your device, its just that we are not allowed to communicate the official date for when this will be.
As you already know, your purchase for this game has been canceled august 10th.
Should you encounter any other issues with any of our products, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
Best wishes,

Guys on the Xoom side of Honeycomb have reported that they can buy OAC 1.0.2 and run it after modding build.prop file. Dunno about the APK's for 1.0.2. I couldn't run it after installing on my Xoom. But then again, I didn't modify my build.prop.

Did exactly what you wrote and it's working! Dude you are my hero! It's a bit laggy sometimes but it's 100% playable. Thank you!
Bugger, I don't have a compatible phone.. the waiting game continues...
This post talks about modifying the build.props file:

I believe it makes your device look like a different one (in the examples, a motorola xoom or acer iconia).
Perhaps you will find this of use for getting this game to work

Passed compatibility check and downloading as I type. The anticipation is killing me...
How do you get these versions for different phones?
Hey I was just wondering, some of the really cool games like iron man 3 and real racing 3 isn't compatible with the tf700. Would these games work if I were to root it. Or is there any other way for these games to work. Thanks a lot
Iron man 3 works, playing it now.
Rooting it won't make a difference. It won't suddenly become compatible in the play store.
Iron Man 3 plays fine, can't speak for Real Racing, not my type of game.
You have two options:
- Sideload it. Buy it on another device and transfer it to your TF700.
- Alternatively, there are thousands of websites who offer the apk. That's all I can say about it as per the rules on the board, I'm afraid. I know it's not ideal, and I don't particularly like the solution myself, but the developer doesn't provide another option, it's their own fault. If you want to know more, let me know (send me a PM).
I saw the option for side loading on my recovery and wasn't sure how it works. Would the function be similar to backing up an application in say, titanium back up, transferring that file to another device, and then running titanium again to install it? Or does it run the apk from there? Either way, these options may not work for games that connect to a server and check the compatibility of your tablet. That would require build changes in your system. I think Gameloft does this type of check. I was unable to transfer one of their games from my phone to the tablet for this reason.
I downloaded from the play store onto my Acer A500 and then backed up the app with ES File Explorer. Then copied the backed up apk to my tf700, installed it, and it downloaded all the needed files. Runs fine.

Correct again. As far as Gameloft goes (I haven't played that many games on the 700) that would suck even harder because they a) make AAA-rated and popular games, and b) they are the main culprits in not properly identifying compatible devices (I believe most of their games run just fine when sideloaded, however).
I was unable to transfer one of their games from my phone to the tablet for this reason.

Obviously, you mileage may vary.
Compatibility of games
I've come across this problem a few weeks ago when trying to purchase Machinarium, which also identifies as incompatible.
I'm thinking it would be in ASUS' interest to have developers correctly identify their apps/games' compatibility with the TF700. Could we perhaps start a list of incorrectly identified compatible games from the Play store, and then could someone forward it to an ASUS representative?
My contribution:
- Machinarium
I side loaded the Real Racing 3 .apk
And its HORRIBLY broken, textures all over the place and sub 20fps to almost stuttering at times.
So when I noticed my Shield downloaded the 4.4 update, and went over the notes in it, I was like I better come to XDA and see if this is for me or not.
CLEARLY being an emulation junkie I need to stick with my beloved 4.3.
What I need to know is if there are any safeguards I can take to stop my shield from updating to 4.4 accidentally / automatically, seeing as the files are already on it waiting to be updated?

Long press the OTA notification, select app info, Uncheck the box that says show notifications. (Or go into apps and find Google services Framework, and disable it that way)
The Shield will not Automatically update on it's own regardless, but now you won't ever see the notification.
If you ever want to update just go into settings, about, Update.
There are other ways but I'm not sure if they will work with the Shield/Have not tried them.
You can also install the Gamepad Mapper, and new Tegra Zone. just grab these APKs and install them normally. This way you have the improved gamepad mapper, and remote streaming when you want it. The new Tegrazone app doesn't replace the old one, so you can still use the HQ old Tegrazone app. The Nvidia button will also only open the old app, I used Gravity box to set up the Y button to open the new Tegrazone app with a long press, and that works perfect.

The same thing happened to me. Since I use the Shield for emulators and some Android games (no interest with streaming PC games on a 5" display), I have no need for 4.4. Especially since emulators are reported to play slower and most of all, external writing for 3rd party apps has been killed by Goople (not spelling error).
The only catch here is the 464 MB update will still be taking up flash storage, since already downloaded. Added: Mine is still on 4.2, as was out of box when bought from Best Buy last week.

Thank you for the reply, Some really handy information here for avoiding the update but getting the goods out of it.
I do have three follow up questions :
1. I want to really confirm what you are saying, that "the shield will not update on it's own" I've had my shield since July/13, I could swear that it's updated itself with out me pushing a button, like even the last update before kitkat, I really thought it updated on it's own. LIke if I shut the shield off, it wont force the update?
2. I have a 64gb sd card so it's not really a big deal that i lost 400megs of internal data doesn't seem like a big deal to me.
But I do wonder, there must be a way to delete those update files some how?
a. I've avoided rooting my shield mostly cause I'm lazy, never done it before, and it seems like it adds complications, should I?
3. About your work around suggestions;
a. What's the difference between the old tegrazone and new one?
b. Do I need to map a button for the new tegrazone or can I just open it like any other app?
c. What is the "remote streaming"? I mean I know about how I can stream from my PC to the shield at home, is this a feature that is new that lets me stream from like, wifi at a coffee shop or something?
4. This may be a better question for some where else, but as of right now the only real reason i'm avoiding the update is because of emulator performance. But from what I can tell there are a lot of negative things about this update.
What are the other pros and cons about the latest update? (I heard something about it effect the useability of my SD card among other things?)
I dont know if theyre in the same spot as other android devices but check the /data/fota folder for the new update files. If its there do me a huge favor please and copy the file and upload it. If you have a slow connect could u grab a couple files from it for me i need to check something.

3. About your work around suggestions;

1. I've rebooted/power off my Shield many times, no problems. I think I've had it on 4.3 since 4/16 it's never updated on it's own, but I do have CWM (custom recovery)
2. The only way around that is unlocking the bootloader and rooting. It's a simple process, getting the environment to use ADB and getting the drivers to all work properly is key, and the hardest part. the process goes: Unlock bootloader > Flash custom recovery (CWM) > Flash root package with CWM.
3. a. Better ui, and streaming options, but lower quality video, and sound lag when streaming. Remote streaming. - New TegraZone
b. No, you can open it like any other app.
c. Exactly, it lets you stream your games away from home, and it's not bad.
4. Really the only cons I see in 4.4 are the SD restrictions, and the worse performance/battery life, everything else is great! The overall polish of Kitkat is really nice, probably my biggest pro is the immersive status bar. Being able to pull the status bar down while streaming a game is really nice (or anywhere fullscreen really)
If you do end up rooting/unlocking your shield, I recommend eventually installing the Xposed Installer and getting Gravity box, there's a lot of useful tweaks in there. :good:
Seems if the main focus is Android and emulator games, stay away from 4.4, but if main focus is PC gaming, 4.4 is the way to go. The stutter that happens due to the random throttle issues with emulators and control input ruins the emulators for me. If I had not been used to them playing smooth on my other devices and the Shield as is, perhaps I would not be as bothered. The difference though is very noticeable to me. Even NES and PCE games stutter/lag. Not good cricket!
If there is an Nvidia update that fixes this issue, I will consider starting from scratch with unlocking and then rooting to remove external write restrictions. Right now, the performance issue does not warrant the effort or free time wasted starting over again.

I dont know if theyre in the same spot as other android devices but check the /data/fota folder for the new update files. If its there do me a huge favor please and copy the file and upload it. If you have a slow connect could u grab a couple files from it for me i need to check something.

Need to be rooted to access. Of course. Drat.
I would like the 4.3 update. I guess I was a week too late buying this.
4.4 No lag for me in any emulators other than some rooms in reicast. Arcade is mint. I spend a lot of time with cps2 and neo geo games. If you're having speed issues in 4.4 try a better emulator. Haven't had any speed issues with retro arch.

"A better emulator"
That just isn't really the problem though, these same emulators were perfect before.
If you have them both, please try Castlevania Aria of Sorrow on GBA.emu
It's unplayable on 4.4, but perfect on later android versions, even with 0 frameskip and hq2x rendering. Now on the other hand, the My Boy! emulator seems to work nearly as well on both android versions and I played through Tomba with FPse partly with 4.3, and finishing it on 4.4, I noticed very little difference. So not all emulators have taken a hit, but it's there even in the system.. and don't get me started on battery life.
Basically I'm kinda agreeing with you. But, there is some issue either with Android 4.4, or whatever Nvidia did.
A little more on Topic. Ever since I disabled the notification from Google Services, and deleted the update from the cache partition, It hasn't downloaded again! It's been 2 days since I did that, and It's had plenty of times to download an OTA. (reboots, sleep with wifi on, etc.) It might download if you go to the update settings, so watch out.
Well I'm glad that I checked out XDA before I purchased a shield. I was looking for emulators, some android gaming, and for sure PC streaming since I have a powerful rig. I'll wait until Nvidia gets this stuff sorted. I planned to root and unlock so I'm not too worried about the external storage issues.

Unless you are a gamer/emulator fan, you probably will not notice as much, but we do. Smooth with 4.2 to stuttery with 4.4 is not an option IMO, so 4.4 is not happening- unless there is an update to fix it
People refer to Retroarch, but compared to the other dedicated emulators, it does not have the same level of features (nor perform as good with some). Also, the lack of individual system defined directories for the different roms is a major pain. :silly:
