Bluetooth audio distortion while the watch is paired - Samsung Gear S2
If I stream music (Pandora, digitally imported) from my phone via Bluetooth audio to my car, and I also have my Gear S2 paired to my phone simultaneously, I can clearly hear distortion in the audio being received by my car, as if the bitrate is being forced lower. The distortion disappears as soon as my Gear S2 is disconnected.
Is having a Bluetooth audio device and a smart watch paired together a limitation of Bluetooth bandwidth? Any remedy or thoughts?
Note 5, 2013 Honda Accord.
I don't have a Gear S2, but I do use a Sony Smartwatch 3 while I'm streaming music from the Note 5 in my 09 Accord. I don't hear any loss in quality with that particular setup, nor did I with the LG G Watch.

I also have Note 5, and plan to buy Gear S2 soon!
So I wonder if the distortion always happens to you with Pandora, digitally imported?
How about just music app or other streaming services?
And which S/W are you using for Note 5?
I have Plantronics Backbeat Go 2. When I use the text reading option on Moon+ reader with the Samsung Gear S2 classic connected, the audio keeps popping and is choppy. If I disconnect the watch from Bluetooth, audio is fine. Tried FBreader and problem also evident. Using wired earphones does not have a problem. Did not have this problem with my Pebble Steel.
Samsung Note 4 using Wanamlite v3.2
Interesting I use a Sony BT headset and must admit it doesn't sound as good lately, coincidentally around the time I got my S2 - will test a bit
i have a s2 3g from Korea , when i stream music straight from watch A2DP bluetooth audio, sounds is choppy and cuts off , noticed its a range issue as if i put bluetooth headphones right next to gear s2 does not cut out, anybody have this issue?
Nope, gear s2 paired to phone and streaming Pandora. No issues on my Chevy Impala..
Can confirm there is an impact, if I stream BT audio in my car with the S2 attached and then detach, you get a compressed type of effect.

I NEED this to be fixed!!!
Same problem here with the connection to my Mercedes Benz Vito Audio 20 hands free device. If my Galaxy s6 is connected to the gear s2 and to the Mercedes hands free I can answer the call, after a few seconds a can't hear the caller, but the caller still can hear me. If I disconnect my gear s2 classic during the call it immediately works fine. That's very annoying because every time I sit into my car I have to disconnect the gear s2 from the phone.

I have the exact problem with my Benz B160. Took me a while to figure out that it was my Gear S2 causing the problem of me not being able to hear the caller after a few seconds. Very frustrating ...
My works just fine, I do have the "phone audio" uncheck under my phone Bluetooth settings for the S2. HTC m9 on 14 Acura ILX. It answers calls on the car perfect.
Having the same issue with gear s2 and Verizon samsung galaxy s7 edge. Replicated with car and other bluetooth devices. As mentioned here, unpair gear s2 from bluetooth and music issues go away.

Any updates?
I long ago returned my Gear S2, but was this issue ever resolved for anyone? I understand there was a software update sometime in February - did that address any BT audio distortion issues? Thinking about trying the watch out again.
I just got a (new to me) Gear S2 and am experiencing these issues. When my phone (Galaxy S7 Edge) is connected to my watch and I get into my car, my car audio will pair, but when using hands free calling, the audio is extremely distorted and unusable. I never had this problem with my Pebble Time Steel.
Is there any sort of fix for this? It is INCREDIBLY annoying to have to disconnect my watch every time I get in the car, because I drive a lot. I am considering selling the watch if this is not remedied.
Same problem here with Gear S3 and Samsung S7 Edge.
Car model is a 2016 BMW F10.
Music sound is noticeably distorted when i stream to the car with the watch paired at the same time.
Android version: 6.0.1
time ago i read something about this issue when i had a s6 flat, and i confirm it is present also on a s7 edge, if i have my s2 connected to my s7 edge and my phone connected to my alpine i can hear the quality difference.
I suppose that the problem is related to the APTX protocol used to stream music, when the bluetooth channel is used only for music streaming you can use the APTX protocol and the sounds is good, when you connect a device using the bluetooth constantly the bandwith to use also the APTX protocol is not enough and the audio quality is scaled down.
This appen also on my wife's s6 flat paired with samsung charm... i think this is a big fail because in 2017 i have to disconnect my watch to listen my music

Here the discussion of this issue
Android 7.0 did not resolve this issue.
Same problem for me with my gear S3 and my Galaxy S8. Tried all streaming services.
Audio Bluetooth stream is very bad when the watch is connected.
This is not a problem with iPhone and Apple watch.
Same issue with a gear s2 watch paired with galaxy s7 phone and boes OE soundlink headset.
I've sent my watch to samsung twice for repair with the issue gettimg worse after the 2nd repair... I'm now waiting for their exchange/refund department.

Car Bluetooth disconnecting?
When I have my s6 paired with my car and my moto 360, my Bluetooth disconnects from my car while listening to music. This occured with my LG g2 until I switched to an AOSP rom which used a lot less ram. When I'm using my s6,i have about 400mb of free ram. What?! 3gb isn't enough? Anyone else have similar experience with pairing android wear and car audio and Bluetooth disconnecting?
I just picked up the new S6 edge about 3 hours ago...same issue in my 2014 Accord. It worked perfectly with my Note 4. ugh....
Same issue here. Any luck?
Perfect here, try a test remove all paired device and try car alone... I have mines paired with gear 2, home stereo Bluetooth, car, beats solo 2, LG Bluetooth headset, jawbone jambo and my laptop, all works respectively
Nexus 6p, Gear S2 and car phone Bluetooth issues.
So after a bit of experimenting, this is what i have going on. I have my gear s2 and a nexus 6p and a 2011 Toyota 4Runner with the navigation. My nexus can not gain access to my car via Bluetooth, either phone or car audio as long as the gear s2 has it's Bluetooth on. When i turn the Bluetooth off on my gear s2, i can then access the phone via car Bluetooth. Afterwards, i can turn the Bluetooth back on on the gear s2 and everything is fine. Incidentally, i can pair and use the gear with my car Bluetooth (but can't get access to my contacts on the gear s2). With both available to my car phone, only the gear s2 will automatically pair with the car. I can't switch to my nexus from the gear. But if the gear is off, my phone then pairs automatically with my car. Now i know the nexus 6p has some documented issues with Bluetooth. Both portable devices use the A2DP profile. But has anybody had issues similar to this with their car and phone? (Incidentally, I didn't have this issue with my gear s2 and my galaxy s5.) Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
And this is why we don't use Samsung smartwatch with non Samsung phones. Even though they will tell you it will work with any phone, it will only work "properly" with a galaxy phone. I gave up trying to get the gear s2 to work properly with my 6p. Having to soft reset the watch every time I went out of range of my phone drove me insane. Sold it & bought a Sony smartwatch 3. Haven't had any problems since. As for the nexus Bluetooth issues, I haven't had any.
I'd guess its the S2's fault as well. I have a moto360 attached to my nexus 6p and have never had any form of bluetooth issue. I usually have my moto360 and a pair of bluetooth headphones or a bluetooth speaker attached and its fine.
Bluetooth audio streaming quality poor?
So i noticed a severe decline in the music quality after i switched from my Z3 compact. Using Poweramp with all the EQ's disabled/flat (and all the samsung eq's off), i get constant minor treble crackling. Full volume and even half volume on the phone. It's really annoying. I have certain songs on my computer and Z3 that i've played so much that i know exactly how they should sound, and the S7 just makes it sound like ****. Has anybody else had this issue?
Do you have any other bluetooth devices connected to your S7, such as a Fitbit or Android Wear watch?
I'm using BT streaming to both my Sennheiser headphones and to my car, and have not noticed any worse sound quality compared to my previous S5.

I have a S7 Edge and a Pebble Time connected. I use several bluetooth headphones and the sound is very good. No problems.

after tuning off the bluetooth to my pebble and rebooting the phone, the sound came out fine through my ford sync stereo. i might as well use an aux cable to remedy this $700 phone's issue.
FWIW, there are two less intense ways to "refresh" the bluetooth audio connection: 1) Toggle the phone's bluetooth off and on. 2) (New to Marshmallow touchwiz) Bring down the notifications and you'll see "Audio path" on the right. Switch it and switch it back to the bluetooth output.
Thanks for the info everyone. I just upgraded from the s5 to the s7 and noticed a significant degrade in blue tooth audio streaming with my Ford sync system. Really upset me so a little Google search and discover.my moto 360 watch is the culprit. After I disconnect it my sound quality goes back to normal. Certainly a pain but at least it's resolved. I have 2016 Lexus ES350 and I have recently started using Garmin Vivoactive HR+ fitness tracker that is connected via Bluetooth to my Samsung Galaxy S7. The bluetooth streaming quality dropped significantly. All music sounds flat even when the music player (Amazon Music) is set to highest quality. In rock music I barely hear hihats. High frequencies are distorted. Are we supposed to go back to the auxiliary audio input jack again? What's up with this?
Thats because sony always use high quailty DAC's and sammy doesn't. same reason why sammy cant play high res audio.

ALso I use it with a audio-technica mx-50 and portable amplifier. with bluetooth I don't notice any issue, because mainly I connect to amplified sources. <With direct connection to the mx50 headphones definitly could be better, but I wouldn't say is really bad. I use flac and sometimes spotify in extreme quality.

Hi the same here, i had a HTC onex/onex+ and the last a LG G3 , the audio was fine when streaming mp3's from my phone, now with my brand new Galaxy S7, there's so much distorsion that it's not earable, my car is Lexus CT200h(no navigation screen panasonic audio) , worse with waze or google maps i cant anymore ear vocal instructions for navigation except when streaming audio or during a phone call , not anymore when listening a cd in the carplayer as it used to be with all previous 3 phones ps: i think there should be a "bluetooth" section in the real life thread , i dont know who is in charge of that sections, i will put 1 star to bluetooth and audio listening and 1 star for audio when recording videos in Gigs i wouldnt buy the S7 if i knew that before

Question Seemingly few earphones working with Watch 4 bluetooth music?
My Soundpeats Mini Pro work fine with Samsung phones, but not with the Watch 4. Following the problem that the watch is disconnecting itself after about 8mins playtime I found this thread on Samsung forum where owners report the same problems with other earphones. Verdict is that only Samsung's own Galaxy Buds work reliably with their watch. Anybody happen to have seen a curated list of other compatible earphones? I would hate Samsung to force me to buy another of their products just to have music from the watch, even though the Pro version has good feedbacks. Some people have sucess after changing their Bluetooth 4 earphones to Bluethooth 5, but mine are 5.2. Edit: Solved the problem on my earphones by setting it to Game mode.
