Speaker and mic weird issues - General Questions and Answers

i ordered the new moto g 2015, a waterproof phone.
i got my phone a few days ago, unlocked the bootloader, rooted flashed xposed- the works. everything was working 100%.
i tested the waterproofing, works 100% as well, no problems at all. I had read somewhere that water still gets in under the back cover and that i should dry it after it gets wet. So i opened the back cover and there was some water, i dried it carefully and thoroughly.
The next day, everything was still working fine. I played music on speaker for a little bit, then someone put the phone in a few inches of water. (Yes the back cover was 100% sealed properly!) it was only underwater for 3 seconds or so, i took it out, dried it off, opened the back, dried that off as well, then tried to put my music back on.
It wouldnt work. i went to the youtube app, tried there with the same result. it was as if the volume was turned all the way down. naturally i tried turning it back up, but it was already at the top.
i rebooted, thinking it was just a little bug, but on powering on it still wouldnt work. at this point i'm starting to get worried, i test every app that i have that can play media:
Poweramp, youtube, quickpic, my video editor, stock gallery.
Nothing, its as if my speakers are physically broken. Then, the phone rings. rings, with sound. i pick up, but i cant hear the other person. I put the phone on speaker, and then i can hear them, but it quickly becomes apparent that he isnt hearing me. i toggle speaker a couple times, when its on i can hear him but he cant here me. when its off neither of us hears the other. i try speaking into google now- its as if i havent spoken.
By this time i get home, i try putting in earphones- music comes blasting out the earphones. i take em out- silence. i connect to a bluetooth speaker- works for music no problem.
I plug in my phone, it plays the sound i set it to play on charger connect/disconnect with gravity box. i unplug, it plays it again. I sent messages to a few people on various social media, and few moments later, whatsapp plays it's notification sound, facebook messenger vibrates but dosent play a sound, facebook plays a little sound, sms app plays its sound.
now i unplug my phone, no sound. i plug it in, still no sound. i just got a whatsapp message, with no sound.
As a last resort i test my alarm clock app. it plays its alarm, but very quietly. i try the stock alarm clock, same result: it plays out loud but much quieter than normal.
so to sum up:
notifications play, sometimes.
media does not play at all.
the phone ringer works.
i can only hear the other end when on speaker phone.
the other end cant hear me at all.
alarms play very quietly.
rebooting, disabling all xposed modules, wiping cache and dalvik from twrp have no effect.
Factory reset also has no effect.
What the actual hell is going on with my phone???

Ok im reporting back, it seems that doing a hard reboot (by pressing and holding the power.button for 15 seconds) did what a factory reset didnt.
Problem solved, Thank god ?

Speakerphone Speaker ISSUE

ok i flashed naft 4.7 and it was working great for 2 weeks.
today i was messing round with the attachment for listening to the radio. (first time). it worked fine, i heard music in my earphones, then turned on the speaker and it played through the speaker... then i exited the program and when i went back to it... no more sound... and not just in the program... no more phone ring, only vibrate, no music from windows media player, nada works... i found a sound booster file on here installed it, tried playing a song and i can hear it... BARELY... the phone has to be touching my ear... ive turned the volume up and down a zillion times... ive soft reset... still nothing...
anything else i can possibly try before a hard reset??
My speaker has totally gone out, as well. No sound at all from anything, only the small speaker for calls. The big speaker doesn't work anymore. Nothing.
I had the speaker go out and once I tightened the screws holding the backplate on it started working again. It had popped loose from a drop. Worth a shot.

Now also tried a factory reset- didnt help.
Did a hard reboot, that seems to have done the trick. I cant believe a hard reboot can do what a factory reset couldnt.
Oh well. Its working now.

Strange! Glad you could solve it.
I've got the same issue. How do you perform a hard reboot?
Nothing of that... Is water resistant... No water proof... If you put into water its get into the speakers and mic they get wet... And stop working... Just got to dry with some air blower and thats its... It could take a minute an haour a day por a week its depende con how muchos water is inside TVE speaker and mic grill...
But my speaker rings when someone calls.
Putting in water with speakers on may result in speaker damage. Motorola has strickly said that. Guys sometimes read user manuals and booklets too.
It's working now. I don't know how.

No Sound from Speaker

So I've had some issues with my G5, including the issue of no output sound from the speaker. When in phone calls, I'd would switch to speakerphone and still nothing. So I went in and had it replaced. At the store, when it was turned on, I didn't hear any sound. I went in and restored my phone, apps and data, still nothing. This weekend, I'm going to do a clean wipe of my phone and try it again.
Am I the only person having this issue?
Just got a G5 for the husband last night and today while he was setting up the alarm clock he was selecting a sound and noticing it was very quiet. When he set an alarm to test it, there was vibration but no sound. Checked everything in the settings we could think of, but the phone was silent until we restarted it.
I'm concerned.
My LG G5 850 EU model just "died" randomly on me today of its speaker... I just turned it on, and I have no audio anymore via the bottom speaker. I cant imagine this is a hardware failure...

Google Nexus 5 Speaker not work properly

I'm using Google Nexus 5 D821 32GB.
There is a problem which appears yesterday that my mobile speaker work only sometime for few minutes.
I can't hear sounds or rings from the speaker. With regular conversation speaker and with headphones I can hear everything well. Until yesterday the phone was working fine, and suddenly the problem appears, it didn't fall down and didn't spill water on it.
here's what I did
boot into safe mode. no sound
factory reset. no sound
install the official google stock rom image but no sound
In settings all the volume panels are up, but no speaker sounds. I have made hard factory reset (master reset) to the mobile and wipe everything, and still didn't solved the problem.
IMPORTANT: I need to mention that from time to time there's suddenly sound, but after few minutes the sound disappears again.
For example, I logged in Safe Mode and check the sound, and it was ok. I could hear the ring sound and other. but after few minutes the ring andall other sounds don't work! I didn't open any app in that time.
Another example; yesterday from noon no sounds, and suddenly in the evening I got incoming call with ring sound (I thought everything is ok), and after that call all sounds don't work again. I hope someone will offer solution.
I also Change the Speaker and Panel Strip/Usb Charging Port strip as u can see in the photo, after changing Speaker and Panel Strip/Usb Charging Port strip its work onlhy for 4 days. After 4 days appears again same problem

Semi-Perm fix (no patch) for random sound change from clear to muffled/bass and back.

Thanks to @cstark27 for the Magisk Mod, and @S8rooted&tooted for troubleshooting a non-patch fix.
So there's an issue with our phones that makes the sound either sound clear, muffled (some call it bass heavy), and then it changes back and forth seemingly randomly. There are three things you can try without using the Magisk Mod, and all three seem to work with one that I personally found to work the best.
1. If you're playing YouTube videos you can pause/play the video. This seems to change the sound either way depending on how it sounds before pausing.
2. Raise volume to 100%, and then back down to where you want it. This seems to be consistent to have the sound be clear without the muffled bass sound.
3. (This is the best for me) Turn off any equalizers any apps have, and only have Google Play Music's equalizer on, and set to Normal without Bass boost or Surround sound on (as in the screenshot). There is a chance something starts the randomness again, and I found the best solution is to reboot, and then it will be good again for a good while (hence the title "Semi-Perm").
I've been using number 3 testing it in all apps I can think of that has sound/music from games to YouTube to simple apps that just make a click (even clicks can be different when the sound changes overall). I have yet to hear any sound change to muffled/bass, and even the top and bottom speakers seem even again. Pausing/playing, raising sound to 100% then back down, the sound is consistently clear.
Here's two links to the other thread with the Magisk Mod, so you can try either of these three methods, or try the Magisk Mod. Hopefully Google will sort it out when they release next months update/fixes.

PS - Another great step to take is to submit feedback through your phone if you have this issue. I've done it myself, so if Google keeps getting feedback, hopefully they will take quicker action.
I think I found the main trigger. It may be known already, but I just put the pieces together. Since if the sound gets muffled, and turning the volume to 100% then back down via the physical volume buttons, and the sound gets clear again, I decided to test how long the volume stays clear after a reboot since a reboot always seemed to produce clear sounds every time. It seems to be steady clear through all apps, videos, and sounds as long as I don't touch the physical volume buttons. The moment I change the volume via the physical buttons my sound starts acting up. Say I'm in an app, and I want to change the media volume. Well if I use the physical buttons of course the volume changes, but like I said the sound suddenly becomes unstable, and I notice the change from clear to muffled soon after, but if I use the volume sliders through the settings section I never have an issue. I did it a couple of times, and it's been very consistent, so now I just use a shortcut on my homescreen to adjust the volumes, and never touch the physical keys. For those having this issue please report back if you try these methods, so hopefully Google can patch it sooner rather than later.

Found another trigger. All was fine for over a day without touching the physical volume buttons, and then I received a call. Took the call (didn't touch volume), and once the call was complete the next app I opened had he muffled sound. Same app I used tens of times since last rebooting. Rebooted again, and all is good again.
So far: Physical volume buttons, and voice calls are two triggers.

I've been keeping my eye on this thread, and came across a poster who said they "fixed" the issue by uninstalling the Phone app updates, and then reinstalling it. I've tried so many things that I almost gave up, but for three days now I haven't had the issue even after several calls. I haven't rebooted yet, so I don't know if it will stay "fixed" (I'm using quotes since I don't really know if it truly is fixed for good). The funny thing is I went to say thank you to the poster, but their post somehow is now gone. I don't know if they removed it, or a mod did, but the "fix" seems to work.

Well this worked for several day, but I was watching YouTube, and had a phone call come in, and the issue came back. Retrying the "fix" didn't seem to work again. I deleted updates from Phone and YouTube, but I still get the issue. The only reliable temp fix is to reboot, and it seems good until a call comes in. Luckily I don't have that many calls, so sometimes I can go a day or so with good sound all around.
On a positive note I tweeted at Made by Google about this, and they replied saying that's not what they want users to have, and to DM them, so hopefully it will lead to a real fix by Google.
I think the random sound change isnt a bug, its automatic presets based on what type of sound it is, like sound for phone, sound notifications, different types of music etc etc.

Right, but there is a bug because the phone will apply the Phone app sound/bass to YouTube, but if you pause/play it, or turn the volume up to 100%, and then back down, the bass goes away. I agree with having presets, but they shouldn't mix/match when they feel like.
Since Google doesn't seem to care about this phone, or this issue, or their customers who bought it, as they haven't even bothered to acknowledge that it is happening I've trying all kinds of things, and keeping track of when it happens most. The latest "fix" that seems to be consistent is keep the in-call volume at 100%. Usually I keep it one notch down, but I was on a call two days ago, and had to turn up the sound to 100%. I forgot to turn it back down after the call, but ever since I haven't had the issue where the sound randomly changes from clear to muffled/bass. I've had sever calls since, and all is still good. I know when none of the volume controls are at 100%, and you get the issue, you can "fix" it by turning the regular volume to 100%, and then back down. So my theory is since the call volume is always at 100%, it is keeping the sound switching at bay.
I still can't believe after more than six months Google treats their customers so badly after paying $1000 (I did since I pre-ordered it). "Here buy our over priced phone now that will soon be half the cost, and then don't expect fixes for issues." Thanks Google.

I see what you mean, kind of gets tangled up in itself as it doesnt switch fast enough between the presets, when i get notification after notification really fast the phone the phone gets confused.
