I've been using CM10 for a while and I'm mostly very satisfied with it. That said, I'm going to need some reliability since I'm going on a trip and can't risk losing GPS or the phone crashing and stuff like that, so I'm going to flash a stock rom for the duration of the trip.
I don't care TOO much about features since I won't be using my phone for 'play' during this time.
I care about battery life, GPS working reliably, and bluetooth audio working. I use a custom launcher, so I don't care about what the stock launchers come with it, and I have a bunch of music apps, so I don't care about the music app that comes default with the ROM.
I've got my eye on either Synergy, CleanROM or MOD - but I'm open to other ideas. What do you guys think?

I've had my SGH-I897 Captivate (AT&T) for about a year now, and began reading about rooting and ROMs and personalizing it about five or six months later. I got tired of the AT&T bloatware, the Tethering Manager FC after upgrading from Froyo to Gingerbread via Kies Mini, and the general overall disappointing performance of the phone. I flashed my first ROM back in late April, IIRC, which was CyanogenMod 7.1. This opened up a whole new world of possibilities for me, although my first attempt at flashing was not very good and I ultimately had to go back to stock. But I learned a lot, and since then went from there to CM 7.2, 9.1, Andromeda, and finally CM 10. When I began running Jelly Bean on my Cappy, I was awestruck at the cleanliness of the OS - the Roboto font made everything pop, and everything just seemed smoother (although I wasn't running the Project Butter version - this was CM).
Last week I decided to go bleeding edge and flashed the pre-nightly version of CM 10.1 (JB 4.2). As with my first attempt at flashing, this one didn't go well, either because of the pre-nightly state of the ROM or whatever. So I restored my CWM backup and went back to CM 10. Later that week, I checked in CM Updater and lo and behold, there was a 10.1 nightly staring me in the face. So I updated (even though the official instructions said "don't update through CM Updater", but oh well), and my Cappy runs like a new phone. I honestly cannot find any issues with the OS at all. Everything works. (I updated the gapps version to the 1212 version which runs with 4.2.) I feel like CM 10.1 has breathed new life into my old hardware (and no, I'm not on CM's payroll :laugh.
Mind you, this is with the baked-in kernel. I have tried the Semaphore 2.8c kernel, but for some reason it just didn't seem as snappy. I haven't tried any of the other JB kernels for fear I'll brick the thing.
Thanks to pawitp and the entire CM and AOSP teams for putting out such a high-quality ROM. You guys rock!

Did you have to factory reset? You make me want to try it. I'm on CM10 right now.
Btw. I find kernels have typical been the biggest player in performance for my phone. I always upgrade to semaphone not sure why you had problems with it.

Yeah Factory reset is recommended. And its Working great. I must ask you to consider updating to 4.2, 10.1 nightly build. Its literally flawless...

Several days ago I did the upgrade to 10.1 from 10 without the factory reset - no problems, but wipe the caches). You need to clear the clock data first and do the upgrade from the boot screen (not the update screen in about phone). Do a backup just in case you have problems.

if you do Erase SD Card, does it erase internal storage instead?
I tried the stable version of CM10, and it seemed to work great except for one thing. I could connect to my employer's Exchange server at all. I tried all kinds of things and it just couldn't connect. I took it to the IT guys and they fiddled with it for a while and couldn't get it to work either. A little quality time with Google told me that JB has a bug that sometimes makes it impossible to connect to corporate exchange accounts. I ended up switching to CM9. Do you know whether CM10.1 fixes that? If so I think I'll give it a try.

Slim 4.2.1 has been available in beta for a week or two now... I've not encountered any problems with beta 2 so far.

with my last (first) android phone, i came to the conclusion that carriers muck up android with their lockdowns, bloatware, and refusal to update non-flagship devices. i've been through a couple of ROMs (AOKP, PA, and now on CM 10.1 until PA releases their 4.2 build). i may get a new phone eventually, but, for now, my Cappy is kickin' it. it's always funny seeing someone with a newer phone running gingerbread and thinking "ah, i remember that boggy, unhelpful, but full of potential mess of a phone." good luck!

I gave my Captivate to my daughter a while back when I changed to the Note 2. I initially set it up with AOKP milestone 6 (ICS 4.0.4). My son has my wife's old Captivate and I updated it recently to the final Cyanogenmod 10.0 release. My daughter's phone has been having battery problems due to wakelock issues. I have considered updating it to the latest CM 10.0 like my son has but it seems SLOW - maybe all the games he has loaded.
Anyway, neither of them care about running the "latest and greatest". They just want a stable fast phone. I know the typical answer is "personal preference" but they don't try other ROMs. I have wondered if JB 4.2.x would work well on old hardware like the Captivate with limited RAM, etc. Neither of them need a lot of fancy options and don't use bluetooth, etc.
Opinions on solid fast ROMs to try?
CM10.1 is still on nightlies and from what I am reading, there are still some probs with power management and wifi.
CM10.0 stable is smooth with no noticable lag on my cappy. I don't overclock.
overall passmark benchmark performance is slightly better than it was on GB KK4.
the slowness on your son's phone is probably due to something running, perhaps games.

So for a stable fast ROM, you would suggest CM 10.0 over AOCP or some of the other 4.1.2 "final" version ROMs like SlimBean?
depends on your personal preference I suppose. you need to get to CM9 at least, preferably 10.0, to flash slim bean, right? So, if it runs well on 10.0, then you could go slim bean
you wrote that you just want the basics, nothing fancy. so, yes, CM10.

Yes, I did. And I didn't really have any problems with Semaphore, it just seemed a little laggy.

I would highly recommend Sephhi's [ROM][4.2.1]Captivating (Xperia Themed)
It is CM10 based and is stripped down to run smooth.

Try hellybean 4.2. Hellybean came a long way from when i used it a while back! It's a much smaller and light weight package as compared to the xperia one. Barely any issues. Boot times and first boot are quick. Over clocking is fun again too. I thought it was oc'd at first for being smooth. It's so smooth and stable. One or two things, but nothing compared to others. I like the xperia one but it's heavier with more to be worked. It's running better then aokp 4.1 with semaphore.

3g Problem
I just flashed 4.2.1 AoCP 5 and lost my 3G. Anyone know what's up?
I've been wanting to give an aosp based Rom a try onthis phone. My main concern is stability and battery life. I know battery life is more of a kernel issue so I will address that later on. I've noticed some roms in original developement don't even specify which android version there based on, but which is currently most stable and 4.2? I need lte calls/sms/mms and camera to be working.
I'm basically looking for what has the LEAST issues. Has any developers gotten past the screen tearing yet?
And I know there are probably 100 of these threads, but none are current
the official cm10.1 by h8rift will usually be the most stable, as a lot of the other ones are based on that (i think). you should basically look for the most recently updated one. that'll have the newest features and latest bugfixes.
you can't go wrong with a bpear ROM, that guy is awesome and has released some of my favorite ROMs for this phone. link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2212825
he always updates them quickly and squashes all major bugs. that one is new so it may have some bugs, but i'm sure they won't be there for long. then once he fixes them, you won't have to delete everything and clean wipe and all that, you'll just have to flash over it with the new one.
bugs vary from phone to phone, so the only real way to figure out what you like is to flash them and check
they are all pretty stable other then known issues. screen tearing is a general issue with 4.2.x roms that use cm10.1 as a base. i would say try liquidsmooth, aokp, or carbon bpear96 aosp build.
Running liquidsmooth Stable and its great. Using it as a daily driver.

Running official 10.1 nightly with vz oc linaro kernel and disable HW overlays on I get ZERO tearing. I put it at standard clock speeds to and its great and very stable. Only time it freezes is every once in a great while after a phone call. Other than that I'm extremely happy.

my personal experience
the most stable tend to be the ones that are more popular/bigger like CM 10.1, AOKP, etc.. at least in my experience. Though I personally love jellybam. I highly recommend it especially if you're a person who loves great audio. Though the only kernel that would work it is Rohan's beta as far as I know
There is no "most stable" ROM. Everyone uses their phone differently, and your mileage can and will vary. Same thing with battery life (and probably has as much, if not more to do with other factors, such as your geographic location and radio).
Its easy to look through the ROM threads to see what specific issues people have, known bugs, etc. Aside from that, just pick some that look like they fill your needs/preferences and try them out.
Since every device handles software a little differently, you need to try it out for yourself and see if you like it. Thats the beauty of XDA, you get to try it out yourself and see if YOU like it.
So since everyone has different options, Im going to close this before it becomes a BEST ROM THREAD... and we dont allow those.
My friend wanted me to help him flash a custom rom on his phone. It is currently running stock Touchwiz and is extremely slow.
I don't really have time to test all the different roms on the Android Development board, because I need to give him his phone back in a few days, so I would like to ask which Rom is the fastest yet most stable.

There are many great ROMs which are both fast and stable. What version OS are you wanting, and can your friend live without the use of GPS? Aries Kernel based ROMs are the quickest, however, the SGS4G has an issue with GPS at the moment, which folks are working on. Personally, for fast, solid, and sufficient battery life, I like AOKP 4.0.2 ICS, however, it all depends on how the phone is used. The Devs here have built up to and including 4.3, but pretty sure most if not all over 4.0.2 are Aries based, so they have the GPS issue.
I'm on multilang slim ICS. Stable, light, fast with GPS working.

Paranoid Android just for the different experience than the stock roms. CM is almost stock. After using for sometime battery charging is slow. TOugh call to make with Dirty Unicorns or Darkobas roms. with PA.

I vote for CM. Its got a blotch of features and no...those nose breakdowns didnt happen to me.. PA's accountability in this period is very bad. They left us and now when android N is almost out, they turn their nose into first PA MM build. kinda late to win win i would say,. but i have to agree they are very stable interms of battery.. if only they stick to custom roms, i would have been on PA.
I would go for CM13 (Sultan) over Paranoid Android. I've been on CM Nightlies for ages and Sultan's ROM is CM with better camera, kernel and based on a more stable branch from CM. Paranoid is just coming back after a long hiatus and it won't have any of the features you've come to enjoy on a daily basis on other custom software.
A lot of people have commented PA has charging issues. I assume that's cause they used the Oxygen kernel. I also had issues on latest Oxygen OS with charging (took like 4+ hrs to charge), it can't be a coincidence. If PA are still dishing out builds, check them out in a couple months when the OS has matured (with more features)
What about the just launched Cyanogen 13.1 into the mix? Would anyone be considering switching to that?
The charging issue on PA is keeping me from trying it, although my battery life on the official CM13 nightlies hasn't been fantastic

I did just that, I've switched over from the nightlies. So far almost everything is just like CyanogenMod, but kind of worse in a way, and the only reason I'm saying that is because I have a very specific setup and like having Google versions of the apps, which aren't all included in COS. The features from the newest update are rather useless to me at this point in time, it might be a different story if something more interesting gets released though. Other than that it's smooth and fast and due to the lack of root I can finally try out android pay. I'm thinking that if I have no reason to stay on it I will switch back to CM nightlies, or maybe try out Paranoid android when some of the issues (such as the theme engine) get fixed.
I would Prefer COS 13.1. I really found the MODs (Skype and hyperlape) useful for myself. Except for these mods everything is more or less like CM 13 except the camera here is better. I tried PA for a day. It had Slow charging, no extra feature over CM 13. Infact lacks a great deal of features when compared to CM or COS 13.
