I think I may have a simple yet very inefficient method of ensuring stable overclock at higher frequencies. I have been messing around with many different OC kernels (along with many different roms ), and have noticed the same situation. While charging, all overclock speeds beyond 633 are pretty stable. It may take a few attempts to reach a certain speed (as the phone might reboot), but once successful its all golden!
I'd previously though instabilities were due to the fact that these kernels were undervolted and thus, after a certain frequency, needed more juice to function properly, but when I removed the charger. My god...it still ran! Just as effectively for extended periods of time.
The only problem was the phone would either reboot or hang if the screen was powered-off and idle/sleep for more than 1-3 secs. So I tried using SetCpu's profiles to lower the clock speed to various speeds below 633 during sleep. Yet to no avail. The phone would always freeze/reboot when it attempted to clock back up.
So if someone were to develop an app that would implement a toggle feature, or make modifications to the current kernels to disable sleep for test purposes I believe that might help. I am far too inexperienced a programmer to dev this but know there was a command under reference called "Partial Wake Lock" that can disable cpu sleep.
Also I realize, if implemented as is, this will destroy battery life. But with a good toggle switch it can be treated as an Overdrive mode!!!
Forgot to mention that while charging and clocked beyond 633 it always awoke with no problems.
My phone will clock to 710 before freezing up but it's crazy unstable. It seems to behave well at 652 with a freeze up roughly every 6-7 hours. I've never tried it that high with the charger though. Seems interesting.

I have exactly the same issue. My G1 runs stable on 672, while plugged in into
the charger. Even using GPS for navigation, browsing and so on, everything works great. As soon as the charger is plugged out and the phone goes into sleep it reboots.
I end up in changing the frequencies on demand with setCPU. When i need more speed, e.g. browsing the web, i set it manually to 672. And before putting it in my pocket i reduce to 614. Even on battery i can use 672.
Also tried profiles in SetCPU but this did not help.
BTW. Using 5.0.8t4, same was on t3

The speeds will be different on different phones due to the hardware even slightly different depending on where the phone was made mine can go to 720mhz while others 614mhz which means unless another way of overclocking is found then we won't have a stable overclock for a while :/

Lemme know how that goes. I've noticed higher clock frequencies are much more stable while charging.

That's strange. Maybe its a voltage difference between batteries that makes its more unstable.

I believe when the phone is charging the operating system either suspends or extends idle/sleep when the screen backlight is off. This would explain why it reboots on battery and not while plugged in. Also the SetCpu profiles would work if only overclocking wasn't so unstable.

That is true, but if we can help the relative stability of each clock rate past 528 by using simple methods (i.e. overclocking while charging), we can simply aim to improve its reliability until a better way to overclock is found.

Seems to be a nice idea. But could you elaborate as on why the text is bold and you had to use capslock for 1/2 of it!?
@slind ok i fixed the post. i will be posting links to the posts who are great battery savers without loosing performance
So basically, we use an I9500 like an Ace or a Grand to get rid of heating and battery drains.. Andyou suggest that it won't result in performance loss. I'd suggest playing games that are more graphically intensive and not just Temple Run.. Try copying data from one memory card to another, or simply try running a Full HD Video. Also, check out web browsing or maybe multitasking, and you'll see where the performance dies out.
I think the fix should come in the upcoming releases of stock firmware by Samsung. By turning off a couple of cores, you're only going back a couple of years. I don't think I upgraded from the S3 to S4 for that reason.

everyone has there preferences and there needs in a phone. and there own settings. and this is a Battery discussion thread. we will be doing many performance and voltage mods, so everyone could choose the settings that suits them. now please dont post aggressive post like that, im not stupid. i know that my settings are very low.
but for my most played games and most used apps. it doesnt seem to effect my performance, so im comfortable with my settings
i had the phone for 2 weeks, happily showing off battery performance and then i asked myself again, why the heck i bought this phone in the first place? BECAUSE IT HAS REPLACABLE BATTERY!.. LOL.. how silly i am trying to squeeze that little drop of power out of the battery when I can double the battery just by getting another spare.
no need to turn off anything, no need to drop performance or screen brightness.. just pure enjoyment of the full potential without worrying battery problem.. just get a spare.

I didn't mean to be aggresive and sorry if you felt like that. All I mean is, there is a limit to which you can undervolt/underclock your phone without losing the functionality or speed. While underclocking to 1.0 ghz or 1.2 ghz sounds kinda normal, going all the way down to 800 Mhz and that too only on two cores is like running Galaxy Ace Dual Core instead. Why would I want to spoil my S4 for it?
That is all that I meant. And the phone is normally shelling out a good day's use in normal usage. Why bother so much about battery really???
My S4 i9505 came with MDE ROM from the factory, apart from doing dirty flashes over dirty flashes, finally someone came up with a recovery which is working. So i've :
1. Formatted system , cache , dalvik
2. Loaded in Djembey's stock slim deodexed ME2 ROM.
3. Using PimpMyROM, did some moderately less aggressive tweaks.
4. Capped the Max frequency at 1674MHz. Interactive gov, Noop sched.
5. Fully charged and unplugged.
6. Fully on 3G . Gmail sync for calendars, contacts, mail, keep, notes. Moderately heavy on Gtalk and Whatsapp. Browsing news and websites.
Observed 4 hours screen time.
Almost 15 hours of total usage + standby (This doesn't mean much, screen time depicts usage time more)
The phone still feels warmer than S2, under operation.
I've yet to try faux kernel yet, but i doubt it would get much better than this. The physical limit i feel is on the CPU, HD AMOLEDs, and the modem itself under normal usage.

hope you may be able to help. I have been trying almost everthing to increase the music volume as the s4 does not drive my senheiser headphones as well I would like. Is it possible to increase the gain through a kernel mod somehow?
Wow you're really random. This thread isn't even remotely discussing about the issue you raised.
Try the omega ROM thread, see if the functionality list includes volume hack.

Kind of a noob here but I got my HTC Sensation XE back from repair not more than a week they did a software update and I'm on the stock ICS ROM with HTC Sense 3.6 I think 3.33, anyway, using it for 10-15 minutes by just browsing through the homescreen or settings makes my phone warm up like crazy, to around 52 degrees celsius it's not yet uncomfortable whilst holding but very annoying. When I play for example Lazors for 10 minutes it heats up to 65 degrees celcius. Is there a ICS build I can use to lower the temperature, or should I undervolt and underclock my phone, and how do I go about doing that, or very drastically, send it back to HTC since it's still under warranty? Also tried CM10.1 build by Albinoman1987 and the phone heats up just as fast as on the stock ROM so I think it's a hardware fault. Any help on solving this would be appreciated. Just for clarification, the part where the SIM and SD card are located gets this hot NOT the battery.

Try an anker battery. It's supposed to keep the battery temperature very low.

It's not the battery, it's the part where the SIM and the SD card are located, the battery only heats up when that parts heats up.

When I sent my phone out for repairs it was for a screen and digitizer replacement. I already expirienced heat problems before repairs but from what I can gauge now, it's gotten worse after repairs, I can't exactly remember how hot it became since I didn't had it for 3-4 weeks.

Well, it sounds like a hardware problem, but I can't really tell you which part is the problem. I'm thinking that the CPU is overheating, and that my suggestion is to try different kernels, and to compare which keeps the CPU the coolest.
You can also install CPU tuner to view the temperature of the CPU and battery.

I use System Tuner Pro to monitor my CPU temp and usage and I actually found out that my 2nd core is disabled only 1 core is working.

Yeah I had them both run at the same frequency by enabling Force All CPU's online -> On boot completed. However this will last for a few seconds and then the 2nd core goes offline again.

I'm using the same rom, and though I don't have heating problems, I have read tons of posts saying there are heating issues with this. Try another rom and post results.

Since you're using the exact same thing could you do me a favor? Install System Tuner pro on your device and use it by randomly browsing through settings and homescreen, don't launch apps, just use the phones basic functions, do that for 20 minutes, and post your temperature, my CPU gets to 53 degrees Celcius doing that, also my CPU1 is offline and CPU0 runs at 1GHz instead of 1.5, if you do have both CPU's online, it's already a hardware issue. And play angry birds for 10-15 minutes or Lazors, doing that brings it to 63 degrees celcius, if you have lower temperatures, I will send it to HTC immidiately.

Both my cores go up to 1.56 Ghz (I am not o/c), when under use.
I turned on GPS Bluetooth thetering, chrome youtube. Not above 56. 63 is way too high. Your kernel should have rebooted your phone at this temp.

Do your soft buttons get warm especially the first 2? Cause mine does, but no matter, after the weekend it's being picked up by HTC for repairs. It's quite a shame, I got it for almost 2 weeks now after repairs and I can't do anything with it for too long. Although the weird thing is, when System Tuner Pro says 53 or 63 degree celcius it doesn't feel any warmer.

I have tried about 9,10 custom roms and kernels, heating as hell.
I can feel de heat on my display lower left and specially firts 2 soft touch buttons. and after more heat all the lower part of phone.
I'm kind of doing this as a competition per say. I mainly want to see if anyone can beat me.

my standby is what is so excellent but what killed my battery was kotor i was playing on max settings so that does effect the battery some bit.

partly it's due to darthstalker being so efficient. My processor is underclocked and undervolted substantially. To add too that i have a strict greenify, powernap and amplify policy set on my phone. WhiteSRT is doing something else that is working better I don't know what it is but it is working amazingly.
So the best thing to do is reset my phone after a update install greenify together with root and use cpu controller for underclocking my cpu?

what did you whitelist for powernap? i always get SOD
Here is mine
this helps by a great margin although if you have xposed it furthers greenifys capibilities
i black list the stuff that consumes the most resources like facebook but i still keep things like my email, spotify, and viper whitelisted.
Is it easy to install xposed?
its pretty easy depending on the version of android you are running just look up on google how to install xposed for your particular android version. but before you install be sure to back up your device in twrp

as much as i want to i don't think i could but then again i haven't had my note that long and it is hard to get a full days usage at military school but i could look at trying it on saturday this weekend we have almost nothing on our calendar

OK, I ran into this issue about 5 days ago. No matter what ROM I install, my phone constantly heats up within 15-20 mins of casual usage. I don't even play games on my phone. I tried N ROMs and MM ROMs too, no matter what ROM I install, phone just heats up. I'm attaching a screenshot from CPU-Z app (which I used to monitor the temperature). Are those readings OK, or is there something wrong with my phone?
My phone's temperatures are usually similar to yours and I thought this was normal. In case it's not I'd like to see a solution to this as well.
Btw, do you have any custom kernels? Agni made my phone way too hot..

I don't really go for custom kernels unless I'm testing one. I stick to the kernel that comes with the ROM.

I have checked. They are mostly around 800 MHz mark. And 45% of the time in deep sleep or 400 MHz.
Also I want to whether surrounding temperature can affect the values? Right now the temperature at my home city is averaging around 34-35°C. Would that be the cause?

I saw this behavior for a few times in RR with both Optimus and Firekernel (Optimus had optimus set as its governor and Firekernel had darkness), however never encountered it in Ultradevs (with both chill and darkness).
This was a couple of months ago, and it hasn't happened again yet. However I am not sure if this was related to kernel because sometimes force stopping random applications such as greenify or nova launcher made the frequency scale down back to 400 (efficiency profile). Unfortunately I didn't get a hold on what was causing this, but I suspect some background user application was the culprit.

I also faced this issue first time when I flashed RR 5.8.2, no custom kernel used. And now its following on every ROM I install. I even tried custom kernels, different gapps packages but none seem to work. The phone heats up while charging and while doing simple things like using WhatsApp, sending emails, browsing through XDA. Also kernel adiutor is showing that GPU temperature is always above 43°C.

Did you restore apps through some backup program such as Titanium backup? In my case, I used to use it and it might be the reason the problem was popping up everywhere.
If not, and if the phone still heats up even in clean state (after a fresh custom/stock rom install), then maybe some hardware issue could be the reason.
My Cpu-z reports battery being at 37° discharging and the sensor0 to sensor5 show 45-51°c although the phone feels way cooler than that.

I clean installed all the ROMs. Still the issue persists. I haven't tried stock ROM yet. I'll try that and report back.

yeah, thinking you may have to flash stock, not restore it via twrp. I know it's a pain but it would give you a good reference point.
Well I can't flash stock ROM for the next 2 days. So let me ask this : Is a temperature of 37-42°C for battery and CPU harmful for the phone? Or I shouldn't worry about it?

I am 26 ambient and my phone temps run 36-36 or so.
Ambient temp does play a factor. If the phone is Almost as hot as the ambient it's hard to transfer the phone heat to the ambient surrounding.
My freqs and temps in attachment. I use aosp-caf with prepackaged kernel(ud i think) with some custom settings.
Ambient temp is around 20 C inside and 10 C outside

Thanks a lot. Even when my phone was not heating up, the CPU and battery never got cooler 31°C. And GPU was around 38°C. And even after intensive use, CPU never got hotter than 37°C.
Now my phone's CPU and battery are around 35°C mark and GPU around 43°C. And during use CPU reaches 43°C mark and GPU about 52°C. Can these temperatures cause any harm to the device?

Don't quote me but I think it's okay. Motorola should have tested it on much higher temps. So just go with it if it dies you maybe have warranty.

I had the same issue . with few ROMS . My device temperature went around 70C on oen ROM. I am usimng Osprey 1GB RAM
I have not faced any issues since I am using Nano Gapps. Previousely I used Mini gapps and that was causing the issue . Depend whar Mobile you use 1GB RAM or 2GB RAM. Also it is better to clear cache after every install
Also I use following settings to make suer it doe snot get hot.
-Ambient Display Off
-Adaptive Display Off
-Try not to block any apps from sending notoification as I had issues where battery draining and mobiel heating up by doing so
-Keep brightness to minimum
and since I am using this I had not any issues with heating

Thanks for replying but its not the issue of any ROM. I flashed stock and the issue still persisted. So I literally contacted everyone I know of who owns an unrooted osprey in my city and asked them about this.
Turns out everyone's phone is getting hotter a lot faster than before. Even went into a Moto Service Centre, they said its fine for the phone to heat up in such temperatures.
The issue is ambient heat. As you might have seen in my previous post, I mentioned that the temperature in my city is averaging around 35-36°C (Today it reached 40°C), the phone just doesn't cool down enough after using it. So when I started to use it again, it heated up.

It might be issue with India summers :laugh: mine is also getting hot from past few days.
