Trble Shoot: I can not receive text msgs!! Samsung Galaxy S4 SGH-M919N - General Questions and Answers

Good morning,
A lifelong friend of mine directed me to your forums. My Samsung Galaxy S4 SGH-M919N will not allow my text messages to come through until I make or receive phone calls. The phone calls somehow push the texts through.
At this time, I have deleted all apps, removed battery & SD Card & reinserted, & next did a factory reset, none of which have resolved my issue. I have looked all through my device settings & text settings...I just don't see anything that would help fix my problem. PLEASE HELP!!! Ready to make my phone aerodynamical any moment!
Thanks,
Kimmy
(I did try and sift through some other posts & do some research, if anyone can point me to an earlier discussion where I may get some pointers it would be greatly appreciated!)

I had this similar problem before and I have theories about it
1.) your phone is in airplane mode
2.) you're using a custom rom and that caused the bug
I actually have a lot more but i think these two are mainly the reason.
if your phone is in airplane mode you should turn it off and it should work normally and if you are using a custom rom try revering back to your stock one
hope I helped ?

@ CarloskunI thought it was acting like it was in airplane mode myself, but I've checked that & it isn't. As for custom ROM, trust me when I say I am a very simple & basic phone user....... I had only 4 apps on my phone (besides what it came with & I don't really use those apps...why do they install them & bog my phone down!!?). At this time I don't even have 4 b/c I deleted them in hopes of fixing my issue of receiving texts.
As my phone sits now, it is in its factory reset condition. Zero Apps, nothing custom.
Also I have 2 phones, 1 is the S4 & the other is the S5. My S5 is fine ....so I have compared settings to make sure something didn't get out of whack. All looks good.
Thank you for replying.

I replied to you incorrectly by adding another post, instead of a direct reply. Still getting the hang of this, I've never used forums for anything before.

Data speed icon?? Gone?? Invalid Sim sometimes??

Okay I have been having the t-mobile "invalid sim card" issue and the phone currently is running with the t-mobile carrier logo. I was able to make calls, and connect via WiFi. I am not able to access the web2go page when I select data in the "wireless & network settings" page with a check. I used to be able to at least access this page with wifi turned off and it would show a little 4g icon on the top? I will post some screenshots. I downloaded GeRIL just to see what it said? I think my phone is rooted? I ran superuser and said the phone was not but the last action I did before getting the t-mobile to show up was a zip restore with CWM so I assume it's rooted? Might be just a flash? One other thing is that I have the WiFi and GPS on and it does not appear to get my location for weather in the weather app?? I can open Google maps and GPS is within 60 meters of my location. I want to reboot the phone but am afraid it won't be back to normal and I will get the error "Invalid Sim Card" again? Is there anything or tests to run while the phone is on the t-mobile network I should check first before rebooting? Or files I should try to use or flash? Or any service menu codes to run diagnostics? Thanks in advance. I forgot to mention that I will be getting a replacement from t-mobile in a week, I did the online chat and they said they will send a replacement under warranty. The box has a date of 7/29/2011 so the phone is about 3-4 months old? The phone is unlocked and has been rooted before, but the issue happened days before I modded this G2x. Basically, today it could connect and tomorrow it might not...or If I reboot It usually goes to the "Invalid Sim Card" I have read other posts with issues of the same type from other users but found no solutions?? Baseband, RIL, Sim ect...all points to a bad phone(using t-mobile) because If I use any other carrier card in the phone it works without errors. That makes me think it's a firmware with t-mobile issue but I could be wrong? Hopefully if the replacement goes thru the same ICS 4.0 will be out and make this phone a beast again?
This might work or it might not: rename your APN manually (Settings/Wireless/Mobile networks/Access Point Names/edit) you can either edit or restore to default to restore mobile data connectivity. Try restoring to default.
I just accidentally hit Airplane mode and it killed it!!! Now it's back to the Invalid Sim Card error again...bummer!!!!
Wait a minute...I waited and read a few posts and clicked the Airplane mode off and on again and it came back to the t-mobile carrier..??? I still have not rebooted the phone though? Hmmm...should I?
Did you get a new sim card when you got the phone? I remember when I got this phone they told me not to use my 5 year old sim card from my previous phone. I say try a new sim card, if that doesn't work try to reset the apn with the instructions I posted last, and if that doesn't work it might just be a bad sim card reader.
I think more on the lines of a bad sim card reader...I have a new sim card...about a 3 days old, got it from t-mobile cause i had the older sim with the larger gold contact patch. The phone is already on order...they said 7 business days..

This is a tricky subject to cover. I have been involved in a few discussions about this. I am unable at this time to post links to threads.(I am at work) if you pull up my profile on here and look at topic I have posted on should help you in the rite direction. Every thing you have listed in your open is covered in a discustion some where....it most likely is all barrier deep. if you need further help post back here. I will help as much as possible.

Yes some times that will work. Other times might take 2 reboots. Also sometimes toggleing airplane mode can bring back apn. After a few sim cards and all my problem went away. When I had the issue I was cm7 rom. Stock Rome didn't really seam to have this issue.
just to close this thread I already received my replacement phone from tmobile. I am no longer trying to track down the issue. Thanks for all of the replied and comments. every one who contributed will get a thanks from me.

Yes doing a hard reboot will reset the Apn/data loss problem. (Also toggling airplane mode would some times reset it.) This is only a tempory solution as it could happen again. On cm7 rc1 it would happen to me at least once a day. As well as many others. Off of the top of my head it was something wrong in a radio file.(? Not sure what file) shortly after the release cm7 stable 7.1.0.1 was posted. I believe that had the patch for the data loss issue. It is possible that some cm7 based Rome may still have a data issue loss as they might not have the updated patch. At the time stock based Roms did not have the issue and as far as know. Some people faced with this issue could have had a faulty sim or phone. The other thing that was happening during the life of this issue was how many people running cm7 based roms didn't have the issue. I no longer have this issue. I followed the bug report that was submitted and sealed out the sim card twice. (I think it was cm7 issue on my device) OP- I hope that this swap works for you. If it don't, I will be more that happy to help. also thank you for your service.
I have posted what I know and can remember here in hopes that it can help some one else out in the future.

When I had the phone I installed CM7, and the daily's...ect..It WAS a phone issue (hardware) I now have had the replacement phone for 1 week and no issues what so ever. That's not to say that the issue will arise again? I have rooted and am running no ROMs at the time but am thinking of going back to the FROYO 2.2 just to get the camera like it was in the older version. I hate the camera in GB 2.3.3. No zoom....c'mon LG..where did you guys lay down to sleep during this process if the development? One other feature that has nothing to do with the camera that I would like to see happen is to be able to enable a bluetooth mouse. I tried my Targus mouse and no luck. I think you can use a bluetooth keyboard but have none to test. I was thinking of shelling out the 160 smackers for the infared keyboard..small and can fit in your shirt pocket, and it's bluetooth.

[Q] Problem with Samsung phone performance

Been contemplating for a while whether to post this as it will come off as rather trollish. Had my Infuse for over a year now. When I first got it I noticed there were some "issues". I remained patient hoping or thinking maybe when GB was released it would improve. It did not. Later I needed to root this phone and came here, found a ROM that had all the AT&T junk stripped out. Phone worked better, but still had these issues.
I got to the point that I knew I would never again purchase either a Samsung phone or Android. Did not know what the culprit was. Just recently I had the chance to really take a look at an HTC EVO, and I realized that Samsung is the problem, not Android.
Number one issue is that this phone is sluggish, and sometimes unresponsive. I will touch whatever button and get that vibrating acknowledgement, but nothing happens. I will be in the app menu and wish to exist and the home button just does not respond.
Yesterday I missed a call because the bloody phone just did not respond, even though I touched the answer button. Other times I just can not make a call. I dial number, and the phone just sits there doing nothing. Eventually I just pull out the battery and restart the phone to make a simple bloody call. I had a HTC WinMo phone for years and never once experienced this. No matter how farked the OS could get with some app or whatever, the phone function always worked.
I do not run a lot of apps, and recently have experienced these issues with almost literally no apps installed. I will then add something like GO taskmanger just to confirm that the unresponsive behavior is not due to some app taking up memory/CPU etc..
Sorry for the long post, but I am at my wits end with this bloody phone. The fact that I miss calls when the **** phone is right in my hand is unacceptable. So before placing this phone in a box filled with C4 and shooting this to the moon, hoping that maybe a solution is out there.
p.s. I have 2 Infuse in use, both have the same issue.
What firmware are you running?
Is it the same firmware on both phones?
What is the launcher?
Have you tried a different modem?
Are you using a battery saver like juice defender?
Are you using an ad blocker?
Are you using a specific kernel? Oc? Uv?
Need for specific info

You know, for the rather lengthy post, you really have not explained any detail about your issue.. You have a generic 'I have an issue, the Infuse sucks' post and its not going to help anyone resolve your issue. I find it EXTREMELY hard to believe that you have 2 infuses having the SAME EXACT ISSUE. Yes, there will be times when you get a defective phone or it isnt working up to your standards, but to have 2 defective phones with the same defect? You need to play the lottery. Also, i suggest you send the phones back. It sounds like youve already made your mind up and have pretty much bashed the samsung infuse in that entire post. The same samsung infuse that myself, and plenty of other people live with day to day and have absolutely 0 complaints.
I will give you $20.00 a piece for them!!!!

Simple . Hack it and put cm7 on it if you really need speed. Maybe its your screen protecter. Wipe the screen off. Cm9 can be sluggish, for speed go to miui on gingerbread or cm7
Id be willing to buy one of the infuses
Trust me...sounds like you got two defective units...which like Scott, I find hard to believe...but hey its possible-idk when you got hem.but if it hasn't been a year then put them back to stock with gtgs unbrick and file a warranty claim with Samsung...the infuse is a great phone and I never had the problem you described...I do have a question though...did you get them both at the same time? Cause I don't see why you would get a second if your first was having problems
Anyways...if you wanna sell one hmu...I may buy one depending on the price and if I can get the money (I think I already may have one lined up for $170 just need to get the money)

Again this has been a recurring problem since purchase, and during this time I have had stock Froyo, rooted Froyo ROM, GB update, and for one now a the GB rooted ROM.
When the slow to unresponsiveness occurs there does not appear to be any specific cause. Prior to updating to the rooted GB I had used GO Taskmanager, and long before that some other app I long since forgot the name of. Point was that they had shown that neither CPU was excessive, or memory was used up. Both phones have data services disabled and are strictly Wifi only. There are no tasks or extra programs run in the background (though did install Connectbot today). I no longer use any Live wallpaper. After updating to the rooted GB I left the phone in that state (no software installed) for a week or so, and the problem still occured.
This occurs when calling or answering calls, but as previously posted occurs sometimes just opening the Applications menu as an example. So it is not a specific task or program that is slow or unresponsive. Earlier this evening I got a call, slide the bar across to answer and the screen just hung there for a few moments. This time it was at least not long enough that I missed the call. When the call was done I looked and there simply was nothing running on the phone. No apps, no web browser or mail, in fact I was not even connected to the wifi (I have data 3G/4G service disabled on the phone).
are you completely wiping before every flash youve done? have you tried a complete wipe and start from fresh?

Task manager is NOT the best app to tell you what is running in the background.
Maps and other location apps may not be listed but will consume resourse that can be the cause of your lag.
The fact that stopping wallpaper or live wall paper off alleviate the condition may suggest that the phone is running at max capacity. Steps to reduce the load improves it. Live wp, facebook, maps, stock email and other device manager from stock att was one of the first @#$% I took out on any rom I run.
Having a large amount of apps installed can also cause this lag. The OS may only be able to handle so many.
Have a poor signal at the time of the call may also be an issue, especially if both of your phones have this issue occasionally but not consistently.
Lock screen can also be a factor. Some sleep setting may also cause the phone to wake up poorly. I get around this by turning off my lock screen. On the call settings, you can also change the answering options so that it will override others and make it easy to answer.
On any firmware - stock or modded, after you have the phone running for an extended period of time without a reboot, you may start to see some lags. This may be across all devices. You may need to reboot it occasionally or boot into recovery and wipe the cache.
These issues may or not go away once you have a device with more power or resources..ex: dual or quad core, 1gb or 2gb ram etc..my guess is when a device has more power, programmers will come up with more resourse intensive apps that may hinder the phone as well.
Lastly, pay attention to your battery meter. As the power dips below 30%, there are steps taken by the OS to conserve the battery. This may give you lags as well..possibly one of the reason why it seems random also.
If you wanted to test out the lag issue due to background apps, go to settings/account and sync. turn off background data. You will retain the (radio) phone and text but there will be no email/facebook, weather, widgets/market/amazon etc updates unless you manually update them. If this runs smoothly but lags when you turn it back on, you can start the process of narrowing down your culprit.

Car Mode Toggles on and off Repeatedly after Root

After rooting my Inspire with AAHK no matter what rom I install car mode toggles on and off and drains my battery/ doesn't allow me to functionally use the phone. I've searched XDA and tried many of the suggestions including trying different roms and uninstalling the app via Titanium Backup. After uninstalling via Titanium Backup the app doesn't fully launch anymore, however it still takes over my phone. All of this has been to no avail. Any suggestions on getting this problem worked out?

I had a similar problem last night... This probably doesn't relate directly to your problem, but maybe it'll help someone else.
I've had my phone rooted for almost as long as I've had it (~18 months) without having this problem. I've been running ShoStock 3 (JB 4.1.2) for about a month. I'm running this ROM because I have to use Lotus Traveler for work, and the version of Traveler we have isn't compatible with JB 4.2).
Last night I got in my car and was talking to my wife on my phone. It was ~93° F and my air conditioning doesn't work in my car. Since I was talking to my wife, I didn't want to roll down the window and have a lot of noise from wind or other cars driving past. After a few minutes of talking like this, I was sweating like crazy.
She had asked me to stop at a store on my way home, so I did and I grabbed the items I needed, all while continuing to talk to my wife. As I was standing in the checkout line, my phone started switching back and forth between Car Mode (or Driving Mode or whatever the term is) and regular, so the external speaker was turning on and off.
I'm not sure if it was the heat that got to it, or if it was the sweat from my face, but even after we hung up (since we couldn't talk when it was doing that), it still kept switching to Driving Mode and back. I wiped it off and it seemed to stop. I tried to call her back when I was getting back into the car, but it started doing it again.
Moral of the Story: Large amounts of facial sweat seem to trigger automatic toggling of Driving Mode.
EDIT: I just realized I posted this in the Infuse thread, while my phone is a GS2 (i777). This thread came up as a suggestion when I started to write a post for the i777 Q&A, hence my accidental post here.

Well, that could explain why on summer my car mode was acting like crazy. Solved it by changing rom, but still good to know.

Major problem need an expert

I am using a galaxy note i717. I have issues with it. I have rooted this phone using odin. I have tried everything I know to make it work correctly. The problems are just horrible. The worst one is the phone call thing. Someone calls me, my phone starts ringing and completely locks up, I can't even see who it was that called. My phone will ring forever till I turn it off, completely locked up only option is power cycle. Worst part is it does not even show it as a missed call so I have no clue who called. Another thing is the phone needs to be reset at least a few times a day, as it is just laggy and slow I waited 10 seconds today for my call log to show up after I pressed the button. There are a few others but those are extremely anoying. My phone works fine till I load certain apps then it becomes bogged down. Defender of texel and Group Me are 2 apps that cause this problem. I have tried many things to fix it. I have tried many jelly bean custom roms. All of them have the same problem. I also did the samsung upgrade trick. The one where you unroot and put the phone to stock ics then have samsung upgrade it to jb then root it to a jb custom rom. I have 2 ideas of how to fix it. I can get ics custom roms to work flawlessly, I got a goldie rom already downloaded and ready to install. The other idea might come from an expert. I think it is some setting that is default turned on that needs turned off. I really don't know, I don't want to revert back to ics I like new technology and getting the most out of my devices. I am using black jelly right now, it is a good rom, it was just the last one I tried. The phone has no wings but was about to fly across the room so I gave up before I broke it. I need an expert that knows the tricks to make this phone work correctly. Any help would be appreciated.

Has anyone encountered this voice mail bug?

Hey all,
Ugh, didn't mean to post yet!
I just updated from CM9 to 10.2 in the hopes it might fix this bug, but it didn't. I suspect then that it's not ANYTHING to do with a ROM per se but I'm perplexed as to what it is.
The behaviour is:
- I get a voice mail
- After listening to the voice mail, deleting it, and hanging up, the notification doesn't disappear
- Some time later, I get a repeat notification of the voice mail
- During this time, I can't receive any texts
- About a DAY later, the phone will realize that voice mail actually has been deleted
I've tried searching xda, and I've tried general googling, but I haven't pinned anything down. I've seen some references to what might be a similar bug, but not with these ROMs, and... honestly a couple of YEARS ago.

I have not seen this on any of my T-Mobile phones....did you do a full wipe before flashing CM10.2..
Which 10.2 Rom did you flash..
You Might have to one-click back to
stock.
That should fix it..then work back up.

Well, I did do a factory reset.
Is resetting to the stock ROM actually guaranteed to, well, basically format /system?
(Oh, and I flashed this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451317 )
P.S. see here for someone's... probably unorthodox solution to the problem. Basically seems to be forcing # of voice mail notifications to 0. Which isnt really what I want, anyway.

That looks like a work-around not a solution. .
Yeah if you odin back to stock...
Its a guarantee it will format your system partition..
Try gremlin remover its always worked for me and odin is pretty simple..follow the OP its a one-click pre-made odin setup so dont change anything and your good.

Once your back to stock...
And the problem is fixed.
I always went to Team Acids CM9.
Let the partitions convert..
Then on to CM10.2 or whatever..
Never had a problem this way..

Unfortunately, I have the 959W rather than the 959V so I can't use it.
And I remember upgrading from gingerbread to CM9 was a lot tougher than I expected (I think getting the drivers to work right) and I had to get a LOT of help from a member here on the forum. IIRC there were a lot more reboots required of the phone / my PC to get things to work.
All in all I probably shouldn't mess around with ROMs. Hardware problems make me angry and frustrated.

O..didn't know you had the T959w..
Well I have seen something similar
On the Samsung GS4G Blaze..
They had a call fowarding bug that was carrying over on Roms..
It was something in CM11 that they
Figured was being written on the
Sim Card..and it was even carrying over to any Rom you flashed..
Once you got it... it didn't matter
what Rom you installed
full wipe or not it stuck..
They have Offical CM11 and the
CM team fixed it..but I remember it took a couple weeks..
Have you tried getting another
Sim Card..couldn't hurt..
Have you tried Force closing the
Phone Apk.and clearing data..
Also found this..
Here's what just worked for me on my Tmobile Galaxy S III
1) Pull the battery
2) Wait a few minutes with the battery out (I waited 5 minutes)
3) Pull the SIM card
4) Replace battery and power up phone. Wait until phone is fully booted
5) Power down phone
6) Replace SIM card and power up
Annoying VoiceMail icon is now gone.
BTW.. I hate the voice mail notification...
I wish people would
Never leave me a voice mail..LOL..

Oh huh, I missed your reply till now.
I think force closing the phone app and clearing caches works but ONLY temporarily and then the problem reoccurs (when the phone decides to check for more voice messages?)
Man if this was something being written on the sim card and not a ROM thing that'd be really annoying. But couldn't I "just" wipe the whole sim card? That's gotta be possible, right?
I'm trying the pull-battery-and-sim-card just to see what happens.
On the plus side I found some old posts of mine on the forum and realized that I only ever used this new computer for flashing stuff. So I just have to figure out which USB port worked last time... the usb drivers should still be installed and everything.
^ Just curious what modem are you using? Is it patched to work on MTD partitions layout? Is it the stock one from Wind the Canadian carrier?
Try using modem LB6 for 959w/v patched to work for mtd roms, hope this will fix the issue.

I believe I am using the LB6 - certainly, I'm not using the stock. (The only confusion is that I've got zip files on my PC for the LB6 and a KG4 modem.)
Whatever modem I have on my phone was working fine prior to some upgrade of CM9 (IIRC).
God!!!
So I got Heimdall working again, flashed to stock, reformatted my SD card, re-updated to CM10... and I'm getting the same problem again!
So either it's the CM 10 ROM or something with my phone company! GRRRR...
Maybe the next step is to go back to stock and then just try CM 9. Or even CM 7 or something... put a modem on the stock ROM and see if THAT still ****s up.
Aaaaand stock + LB6 modem gets the voice mail notifications.
!%()*!%()*!#% phone company!
