Google App v5.3 - Nice performance boost - X Play General

Gives the Google Now launcher a nice performance boost. This phone has huge a huge upside to it.
My pick for sleeper phone of the year.

I just wish Google didn't make the search bar look like something from a Fischer-Price toy....

My Play's performance is not half bad, it is similar to my G3's (which stutters sometimes, too).

Question regarding Gpu rendering ui

I've been breaking my head over here testing and flashing and editing ect to see what is the best balance for performance. There is something I have come across. Its the pulldown notification bar behavior in touchwiz (only touchwiz for some reason when using LP or Go they are not affected). Using stock kernel I have noticed when forcing gpu ui rendering "debug.sf.hw=1" it performs better and there is no lag in the pulldown. Flash the faux kernel and your swiping performance seems even better (prob due to OC) but the pulldown becomes laggy. It stutters. Always. Every rom every time. (Some are a little better but compare it to another and its very noticeable). This is only affected with touchwiz and only on the home screens. Open an app and pulldown behaves normal again. Then on some other roms using a stock kernel the gpu forced has the same behavior. Lag. Only there. Only touchwiz. Remove it from the build prop and voila smooth pulldown again. I know I could use another launcher but I like touchwiz compared to other launchers (its the smoothest but lacks features I know). Same result with the modded 4.5 Tw as well. Then there are other roms that perform amazing without gpu ui rendering like TPC. Its disabled in the build prop. So basically I need someone smarter than me to shed some light as to what this may be. Do we need to render the ui in gpu? Is it better? Why is only touchwiz affected? Does it use some sort of rendering that conflicts in certain cases? Is there something completely different causing this? Thanks a bunch and hope to hear what you all have to say

[Q] Google Play Music: Tablet UI on any device?

Here's a very simple question for anyone out that who happens to know the answer, or who thinks they might know a solution:
Is it possible to force Google Play Music (or any app for that matter!) to use a tablet UI instead, regardless of your DPI settings or ROM? (Kinda like how you can do this for individual apps on Paranoid Android) If so, how? What's involved?
To elaborate, I'm currently pretty happy with my shiny new Galaxy Note II, and honestly, I can't really say many bad things about the stock TouchWiz UI this time around; I think Samsung (mostly) got it right, at least well enough for me that I don't feel the insatiable urge to flash an AOSP/AOKP ROM or something else. I also happen to love using the Google Play Music app as my daily driver for all my music.
However, the phone UI for Google Play Music is, (how can I put this delicately?), utterly and hopelessly abysmal. It's awful! It's ugly! It's nowhere NEAR as fluid and as intuitive or even functional as its tablet UI counterpart!
I dearly miss the Google Play Music experience on my GTab 7.7, and I wish I could bring that same experience over to my Note II.
I already know about changing DPI settings in my build.prop, but since that causes a whole litany of issues with a stock interface (TouchWiz in particular), that's not what I'm looking for here. I'm looking for a way of somehow tweaking a per-app UI/DPI layout for specific apps, much like how you can with a Paranoid Android ROM, BUT while staying on whichever ROM you happen to be running.
As awesome as the Note 2 is, I do kinda feel that Samsung is dropping the ball on this one. If they're going to market the device as a happy medium between a phone and a tablet, a hybrid device for all intents and purposes, then it seems logical to reason that they really should have made a hybrid UI for it right from the get-go. Without a truly hybrid stock UI baked in, it's just another high end phone, with a REALLY big screen and an S-Pen.
Then again, maybe I'm just crazy...
Hello? *bump*

[Q] What do you expect / wish to see in lolipop update?

i want to use the sensor at 15 mega pixel 16\9 ratio with superior auto..... plus headphones audio enhanced in terms of bass....
I wish to see, better camera performance (superior mode) and long exposure option for camera.
I'd like to see bit louder and more bassy loudspeaker
Better camera performance and clearer camera app (too many options, too many "links" between options), raw support (most likely not gonna happen), lockscreen close to stock lollipop, more flexible recent apps drawer (seems too "static" and also, with the multiwindow options and "close all", very crowded), quick toggles integrated as in stock lollipop, click-to-expand volume bar
I already had CM12 on my HTC One M7 but i can say, i'm not missing much. The lockscreen was definitely better, the system was pretty fast and die animations made the system look less "static" and more interactive, it made more fun just to scroll through settings etc.
I also hope for sony to improve battery life even more, because well - it's battery life If we can have an improvement of maybe 20%, which was often mentioned during general lollipop news, the Z3 would impress me even more. At the final hours with the One M7, i struggled to get 3.5hrs SOT which seems like a joke now, the Z3 easily doubles that.
Since I don't want to root without unlocking the BL, I can't wait for apps to be able to write to the SD card once again. Thank you Google for putting that back in lollipop!
How about a release date? Happy Christmas everyone!
How about a better UI. Got bored of the same old Sony's software. Hate using launchers....Sony needs to up the competition.

yeah....... unicorns wearing bikinis
I would be happy if they fixed the camera software for "auto" and if possible getting rid of that occasional crackle in calls with the top speaker.
Something that looks like stock lollipop!

I wouldn't say completely stock, but something that may slightly resemble it?
A Complete Visual Overhaul. I'm sick of Sony's UI. Those messages, contacts icons were from the early Xperia Vivaz years. It's been 3 whole years and Sony isn't bothering to change the UI at all while LG, HTC and even Samsung are making huge changes to their UI.

the guy is absolutely right......
My list:
- The camera! Enable 13-16 MP for Superior Auto Mode. Improve camera post-processing (and RAW support) of captured photos.
- Volume control. Make 50% sound a lot louder and like other smartphones. Make 80%-100% mark less drastic in volume change.
- Get rid of "small apps", or enable it as an option.
- Overhaul UI (like mentioned already).

Scroll lag / stutter?

Hi,
I've noticed that some apps run very smooth, but others can lag for no reason.
For example Play Store. When you open Play Store and start scrolling to the bottom of the home screen (lets say 3-4 rows of apps per swipe down) it lags a lot. It's nowhere close to being smooth. Even when you're at the bottom so everything has loaded, it still isn't smooth when scrolling up and down using normal scroll speed.
Reddit is Fun is also an app that has lots of lag / stutters for me.
Does anyone else experience this?

no. i haven't yet experienced any (major) lag in any app (have Play Store obviously and Reddit is Fun installed).. currently on 1.13.401.1.. also as some apps are smooth for you and others not, i would say blame the apps, but lag and smoothness are such subjective terms that I can only say I don't see any lag.

Do you have a password manager such as LastPass installed? They can cause lag issues if you have the accessability option set to fill passwords in apps.

Well I can't really blame Play Store since it's a default app. If you don't experience such lag, it must have something to do with my device.

Here's a short video with GPU Profiling on showing the spikes and stutters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUyyZc-_UGI&feature=youtu.be

i can experience the same "problem" you have. Everybody has it , trust me, but not everybody is sensible like we are.
i also see that the "go back" animation for example in settings is also stutter in 2 /10 times.

Thanks for your reply.
It's strange to me that the top of the line hardware can't even manage to make scrolling a default app like Play Store feel smooth. Even when viewing text comments within the Reddit is Fun app isn't always smooth. That's just scrolling text, not even loading images.
I guess I have to deal with it then. I expected more for this price range.
It's not the device. It's just poorly written apps. Compare for instance Facebook app and metal on older devices. They do the same thing but the experience is night and day. This a fairly new device so updates will come but playstore always stutters no matter the phone. It's been like that for years and I tried maaaaany devices
yes it has absolutely nothing to do with the hardware/device. like @mlodykaras said, it just poor coding.
Okay thanks for all your feedback guys!
Let's hope Google will learn how to write applications for Android correctly :silly:
Well to come back to this. The lag is just insane, there's no other way to put it. When I compare scrolling through the same text with my old Lenovo K3 Note, the U11 lags and stutters all the time while the Lenovo K3 Note doesn't stutter at all. That's just scrolling through text!
I've noticed that if you change the Interactive governor to Performance, the U11 doesn't lag anymore. But this isn't great for the CPU and for battery life of course.
Video 1 shows a 1080p 60fps Twitch stream. You can notice there are some spikes and overall it's close to the green line.
Video 2 shows the same 1080p 60fps Twitch stream. You can notice there are no spikes and overall it's not even close to the green line.
Video 3 shows the same comment thread in Reddit is Fun. I start by using the Performance governor and you can see me switch to the Interactive governor a little later. It's clear there are a ton of spikes using Interactive.
This really shouldn't be happening on such an expensive device.
I've even reverted back to stock using RUU, fresh install no restoring done. Same issues.
I have also noticed few apps other than play store. I am from India and some apps like BookMyShow & Inbox from Gmail stutters and there are always some frame drops. I tested BookMyShow in One plus 5, it runs very smoothly. Idk why it is like this and whether it'll be corrected or not.
My old debloated Galaxy S6 had smoother scrolling in apps in comparison with HTC10 and U11. HTC should adjust some kernel settings ot OS to fix this, it is very annoying. I really hope it will be fixed with Oreo update.

I don't think it would get fixed with oreo update as its not something that requires an overall new version of android.
Had it supposed to be changed, it would've changed by HTC in those 2-3 updates came out till now after the launch.
Problem with HTC is they do not take or even consider feedbacks unless there is some major major glitch.
For HTC this scrolling stutter and overblown of highlights and light sources in camera is just minor issues and they don't care about it.
On the other hand, there is google which takes every feedback seriously and tries to improve the Pixels on the software level as much as the software can.

Pixel/Google Now Launcher is laggy

Pixel/Google Launcher. Swiping animation from home to Google feed is very bugy, and not smooth. Reminding me a senstativity like a problem.
Device: OnePlus A6003
Frimware: 5.1.5 (untouched)
PS... Whoever don't see that, please do not leave your feedback. (Go buy Samsung)
Are you talking about the transition animation. first thing I installed and I don't see it.
PS I do perfer Samsung though.
Which version are you using.
Are you sure its the launcher? There are lots of reports of touch insensitivity issues for the screen. I suspect something isn't releasing control of the main thread as it should be, and is causing issues as you describe..
Yes it is laggy, install Lean launcher from play store, it's performance is much better, and if you play with the settings a bit, you can make it look exactly like Pixel launcher.
By default it doesn't have Google feed, you have to manually install another app (by same developer) for that, but once it's done it's pretty great.
I have no troubles with the pixel launcher at all.
It works very smooth.
I'm using the: "Launcher3-aosp-optimized.apk"
