Hello All,
I recently received a recycled MPQ from Sprint and in attempting to unlock the device I am informed (via Motorola - Unlock My Device) that this device is not eligible for unlocking! Maybe it was already unlocked once before and Moto doesn't clear the system even though Sprint does? Like maybe it is already tied to another user? Or shows that its already been unlocked? In any event. I may be sending this phone back for yet another recycled device and I assume I will have potentially the same problem. Rather than going to that hassle, is there a work around method for unlocking the bootloader without going thru Motorola?
TIA
Matt
Hi there,
You may need to make sure you remove the spaces from the number sequence when you paste it into the web page. Try pasting them into Notepad first, then you can check for/delete the spaces, and copy/paste into the moto unlock page.
I was getting the same result until I worked this out.

Actually, I transferred the code 1 at a time. I did not copy and paste. When it failed the first time I went back and did it again, it was exactly the same, an exact copy of the code. I verified and re-verified. No worky.
Also, I dont remember having "#"'s in my code on my old device but this one had several.
I think the unlocked boot warning would show if it had been previously unlocked.
Sounds like something else.

No, think about it. The phone has already been unlocked thru Motorola once potentially (most likely, since its a recycled phone). Just because Sprint wipes it doesn't mean Motorola re-locks it. I think there's a glitch in the 'accounting' by Motorola whereby phones (hardware) that were locked by a previous owner are registered to that person and not valid for another owner. Unless a new code is generated on every FZX flash which is highly unlikely. Anyone know more about the Motorola code and if each device is tied to a single code for its lifetime?
Why don't you contact Sprint then & get them to sort it out?
Pretty sure the moto unlock site states that they consider it impossible to re-lock a phone once the bootloader has been unlocked.
Read some posts that talk about re-locking, but the device would prob still register as unlocked on the moto unlock site. This may be what you are running into.
None of the PQ's I have were disallowed, despite me not being the original owner, so the codes/unlock will undoubtedly tie to a device serial# rather than a registered owner.
Dude - both my handsets had #'s in the code number sequence. Why don't you try cut & paste like I suggested? What have you got to lose?

To clarify - I think a factory reset handset from Sprint would still show up an unlocked boot loader warning if it had been done by the previous owner. It would prob have to be re-locked by moto somehow to remove the warning (unlikely).
As an unlocked handset would have void warranty issues, would Sprint really sell a boot unlocked Q? (Also unlikely).

I think we're tracking just not on the technical terms.... although I think sprint has a way of like hard wiping the phone or something. A factory firmware flash. Bam. Back to locked.

Ofcourse you can. Right click inside cmd window, in popup select "Select"/"Edit"/"Mark" (I can't remember), left mouse click and drag to select. Enter or click (I don't remember) copies to clipboboard. Much easier than it seems. Non-intuitive but it's windows. Cygwin's shells might be better.

Update: copy and pasted the exact code via yall's instructions.... and... "Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking."
Also, the Motorola rep showed in his system that the device was "not rooted". He couldn't figure it out and said he would get back with my via email.
Maybe its some deal Sprint has worked out with Motorola? They tie my name (as a known rooter/unlocker) to the hardware and tell Moto to disallow unlocking on a particular device?
Does anyone know of another way to unlock the bootloader?

Well, unlocking the bootloader does void the warranty... so if you're getting warranty replacements after unlocking the bootloader, perhaps this is why.
I seriously doubt it tho. I would just make damned sure the code is correct - no spaces being pasted in, etc.

^This is why I suggested you paste into notepad first, so you can check for spaces. Pasting directly into the web portal will carry spaces across, even though it looks like you haven't selected any!
Try via notepad & see what comes up. I had this exact problem with my first one & solved it this way. The second one went through perfect, because I used the notepad method.
Good luck with it. I doubt you have been banned for rooting/unlocking, that is what the bootloader unlock portal is for.

I also was unable to unlock my device through the official method. I copied the text out of the command prompt into notepad, verified it was all there, made sure there were no spaces, removed extra text in the lines, etc. I rechecked the code about 10 times and Motorola kept rejecting it.
My phone was won in a giveaway. It was shipped to me directly from Sprint but I never activated it on their service. I'm a Ting customer. They're a Sprint MVNO (reseller basically), and they had some issue activating in in their system, possibly because it hadn't previously been on Sprint. I wonder if that perhaps kept it from being activated in Motorola's database?
Anyway, you should be able to use this tool to unlock your bootloader. It worked for me, though I can't promise it's as good a solution as the official way or that it will also work for you and not do bad things to your phone.
It works on Photon Q too! I just unlocked my Photon Q with it... No problems...

So there is a tool huh? GOOD.
I just got off the phone with "Motorola Level 3 Support" and a guy named Jonathan told me he ran into this issue before. There is nothing Motorola can do and he suggests I go to Sprint for another phone. I said, well isn't this a feature of the phone, an unlockable bootloader? He said, "yes, but it's not a feature we support, because it voids the warranty" So they don't support any problems with that feature.
But since it was a selling point of the phone I think someone is liable for denying me full features of my phone. But regardless, I am going to try this new method and hopefully unlock this phone. Will report back.

Were you already rooted? And if so, via what method? The page for the tool says it needs root access and SU installed. Or did you unlock without root access by using this tool?

I was already rooted. I looked at my past posts and found that I thanked someone for this Motorola JB root method that doesn't touch the bootloader, so I assume it's what I used. link
edit: I also verified that I have the tool on my hard drive, so I'm 99% certain it's what I used.
I was just wondering if anybody will ever be able to unlock the bootloader for the Droid Ultra... similar to the Developer Edition phone. Like is it a work in progress or do people think it won't ever happen?
PS: I'm so sorry if this post should have gone in a different section, but I figured since it has do do with future development, I just thought it would fit in here.

You need not go through the ebay middlemen that people talk about there, you can paypal the seller directly.
Search that thread for paypal. If you look closely you'll find an address to which you can send money, your IMEI, and your email address and they'll mail you back a code.

So once I get that code, I don't ever have to worry about waiting for an exploit to come out after every update? Like... I'll be all set no worries and can jailbreak right away?
If your bootloader is unlocked then you can just install a custom recovery over the stock recovery image (people here like TWRP), use it to flash SuperSU, and then you're off to the races.
You are no longer dependent upon someone finding privilege escalation security holes in the OS that would permit rooting (and would no doubt get patched out in a future OTA).
The caveat here is that if you replace the recovery image and flash SuperSU, you will no longer be able to update your device via OTA. The OTA update process relies upon having a stock recovery, and it will often choke anyway if there are files in the system partition that should not be there (such as what will happen if you're rooted).
Easiest way to get updates in the future would be to SBF it it back to stock, take OTA, then put the custom recovery back. Because you have an unlocked bootloader you have no need to worry about losing root.

yes, when you request the code Motorola sends you an email, so you just have to look for an email from [email protected] with subject "Unlocking your Device"
Problem is that I didn't unlock it. I bought used phone that was supposed to be on warranty and it shows status unlocked so warranty is void. Seller is trying to fool me that I did this and he doesn't even know how to do it. So I wonder if I can check somewhere when this modification was made?

I would recommend contacting an agent on My Moto Care (The Help App on your Moto G) and asking if they can check according to the device serial number when the device's bootloader was unlocked. This is because to request the bootloader unlock code from Motorola the user is asked to sign in/register with My Moto Care.
Thank! I've contacted Motorola Support on chat and now I'm waiting for the date as consultant needed to escalate my case further.
Hi. Quick query for a mate.
He's having issues with his Moto G and is in to email with support.
They're totally giving him the run around and have gone as far as to tell him he's out of luck due to being rooted.
Now he's not stupid but he has no idea what rooting is and has definitely never rooted his phone. He has updated to 6.0 via OTA but that's it.
Support have suggested they know his root status through checking his IMEI number....is that even possible??
Long-winded question I know, maybe even better placed in another forum but I've asked now so...
Anyone clue me in?
Cheers
Malc
I am not sure about what I am gonna say but ,i think its probably possible. Because before being able to root, the phone bootloader has to be unlocked first; and unlocking is done by submitting a device specific code to moto website, and then getting a return code and then enter that code with the command
fastboot oem unlock <code>. So it is entirely possible that they have designed the device codes (which we submit to unlock) that they could be matched up with the imei number of that device. In this way, even if you do not unlock actually, they can see that you have got your unlock code and they can blame you.
BUT, this whole theory fails as you say your friend is not aware of rooting. Now extraction of the device specific code remotely is reasonably not possible without physical interaction with the phone itself. So here is an actual way you can check-
Power off the device, then press and hold simultaneously power button+Volume down button until a screen appears. It should say fastboot mode. Check the bootloader status; It should say LOCKED and software status OFFICIAL. (Also a status number will be there, can't remember exactly but it has to be 0 or 1).
If this matches with your device, congratulations, the device is not tempered and the support guys are probaby idiots (no offence here if unlock code was indeed requested).
BTW, question seems cool!

I was goin to say to him about the power+volume button but he is hopeless. I'll probably do it for him instead.
Defo no rooting/unlock, seems like it's Motorola not wanting to help him fix his phone...stay tuned ?
Moto checks the IMEI against a database, if it has ever had an unlock token issued, the warranty is void. Doesn't matter if it was actually unlocked, rooted, or not.

Obviously it doesn´t work.
When submitting your identifier token, you´re basically submitting your device´s unique IMEI and serial no aswell.
Based on this, the unlock code is again device specific.
I even see how the identifier hash itself changes every time i boot into fastboot mode.
btw. still no e-mail from htcdev.
The htc support team didn´t even understand what i was talking about when i told them htcdev wouldn´t work.
Sad
In this case, he should have a method of generating bin to automatically generate and reply
I went to ask the customer service of htc, and he said that this unlocking service will not be opened in the future.
