New s6 - battery dead overnight when phone was off! - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not sure if I should be worried. I got the phone last night and charged it to full. Then I powered off the phone. This morning the phone didn't turn on and the battery was dead. Can the phone turn on by itself even when it's powered off or something? Not sure what happened here.

I don't think your phone could drain to 0 from 100 overnight even if turned on. I also wouldn't think it would normally consume one single electron while powered off. This makes me suspect some weird combo of things, such as your battery not being calibrated properly and misreporting that it was full, and perhaps some sort of short in your phone allowing the battery to discharge even while powered off.

Ya maybe it was the battery calibration or something. I'll give it a day or two and if it happens again, I'll get it exchanged.

What is it laying on or around? My locker at work is notorious for draining my phones battery unless I have it sitting a 1 inch thick piece of foam. I noticed it on my '14 Moto X and decided to try it with my iPhone 6, dead battery also. I have four earth magnets in my locker so that could be a factor.

Your post got me thinking. I think I know what happened. I put the s6 back in the box it came in for the night, until I got the new SIM card this morning. My guess is the power button probably got pushed while it was in the box since last night, or in my bag or something, probably triggering constant reboots.

[Q] Did I break my battery??

I flashed weapon onto my g2x and like it...used it for like 5 days, then I was calibrating my battery by charging it fully, using a battery calibration app to reset the stats when it was at 100%, and I drained the battery to 0%.
I was playing a movie when it hit 0%, it showed t-mobile's goodbye screen, but never shut off. I let it sit there and walked away. 30 minutes later t-mobiles goodbye screen was still on the screen, and I removed the battery...put it back in, plugged in the charger, then couldn't get it to turn on. I let it charge for 3 hours (the plug was surely live, it would charge my evo 3d when I tested the charger), but still can't get the phone to do anything!
I'm guessing something went wrong with the battery, so I ordered a replacement...but I can't understand what or why. What do you guys think? I'm a little worried that it was something more than the battery but I won't know till the battery is here in a few days.

It is possible the Battery is fried. Today's batteries should never be drained to 0. There are charge circuit's inside that can be damaged.
solved
taking the battery out and putting it back in didn't work...but it did finally come on once I removed the sim card.
wierd...oh well, glad its back up and running. I saw someone in a comment somewhere say they couldn't get theres to power back on until they removed the sim card...and it worked for whatever reason.
It has been said by a Google developer for android that battery calibration doesn't do anything for the battery.
Battery stats only tell you what's been running and using battery, not anything about the capacity of your battery.
Not sure but I think your battery is just very dead. I suggest to keep trying to charge, but make sure the phone isn't getting too hot.
Here it is.

And just for future reference the g2x has issues with turning off due to a dead battery. So if it ever dies like that again just pull the battery immediately. Also sometimes it won't even make it to 0%, I've had mine die at as high as 4%.

The phone's charge circuit can't be damaged by a "dead" battery, the charge circuit is self-monitoring and protects itself, the phone and the battery.
The battery can be damaged by its voltage being too low or being charged improperly. A cheap battery with no or fake charge and temperature monitoring can overheat and cause damage to itself and the phone.
Cheap external battery chargers, or those which aren't meant for the type of battery being charged, can/will damage the battery. Overheated batteries can catch fire and/or explode.

[Q] Is my phone dead? :(

1. The phone won't turn on
2. The charging indicator doesn't light up when I try to charge the battery.
3. One of the sensors on the top left turns dim red in color when I connect the charging cable
4. I can't hard reset either
thanks
Did the battery die all the way? Or did you flash a radio without checking the md5? If its a borked radio install say hello to a 500 dollar paper weight if its the battery your gonna have to charge it in another phone cause I'm not sure if cwm 5.0.2.7 has powered off charging

Yes we need a couple of info first. Also we need every information we can get in the last events before the phone got bricked. Like what did you do? what ROM? What's the status of the phone? Battery?
The more the details the better we could assist you.
Sounds like when my first Mytouch 3g broke, it would turn on the first couple of times going into a bootlope at the HBoot. It also didnt respond to charging or any other battery i tried.
Thanks for the reply strapped. I haven't flashed a radio. I did flash the virtuous infinity rom though. I'm not certain if that affected the radio. I did, however, let my battery die all the way. Do you know why one the sensors on the top left corner turns dim red when I connect the charging cable?

Oh crap the battery die all the way problem
I think your battery is dead.s
Saw dozens of problems like this on the my previous device's forum.
Li Ion batteries have this fuse inside it in which it trips off when the battery gets discharged to a certain voltage. If it does your battery goes into a suicide mode in order to protect the phone.
basically the best thing to take good care of your battery is not let it drain lower than 40% and not fully charge it to 90%.
discharging it too low drains it's lifespan drastically. While charging it too high also drains it's lifespan.
Over-discharging Lithium-ion
Li-ion should never be discharged too low, and there are several safeguards to prevent this from happening. The equipment cuts off when the battery discharges to about 3.0V/cell, stopping the current flow. If the discharge continues to about 2.70V/cell or lower, the battery’s protection circuit puts the battery into a sleep mode. This renders the pack unserviceable and a recharge with most chargers is not possible. To prevent a battery from falling asleep, apply a partial charge before a long storage period.
Battery manufacturers ship batteries with a 40 percent charge. The low charge state reduces aging-related stress while allowing some self-discharge during storage. To minimize the current flow for the protection circuit before the battery is sold, advanced Li-ion packs feature a sleep mode that disables the protection circuit until activated by a brief charge or discharge. Once engaged, the battery remains operational and the on state can no longer be switched back to the standby mode.
Do not recharge lithium-ion if a cell has stayed at or below 1.5V for more than a week. Copper shunts may have formed inside the cells that can lead to a partial or total electrical short. If recharged, the cells might become unstable, causing excessive heat or showing other anomalies. Li-ion packs that have been under stress are more sensitive to mechanical abuse, such as vibration, dropping and exposure to heat.

Cheers guys. Here's every bit of information I can recollect
A few days ago I created a nandroid backup and formatted my sd card via the PC.
I flashed the latest version of CWM recovery
I flashed the virtuous infinity rom 1.33 alpha v3 and then flashed the 1.35 beta 1 update.
Then i copied some music on to the SD card and installed a couple of apps.... nothing out of the ordinary.
The phone worked fine the last couple of days but I don't remember letting the battery die all the way. I should add that I have a dodgy battery; a couple of months ago my dear girlfriend spilled her drink and beer went in to back of my phone... since then the keyboard doesn't work (some keys work but its basically dead) and the battery has been affected as well since it now only lasts 3-4 hours after a full charge....but this issue can't have caused the problem I'm now having because the dead keyboard and dodgy battery have been around for a few months...
Last night, however, I think I let the battery die all the way and at some point, when I tried to turn it on, the phone vibrated as it does when you hold the power button, however, the screen didn't turn on. Since then, nothing has changed. When I connect the phone to the PC, it makes a couple of "connection" noises but I can't access the SD card or contents.
by saying latest CWM is it the 6.0 touch based CWM by chance?
sorry mate, i meant 5..0.2.7.
That's the CWM I'm using so it's safe. I'm also on latest VI for weeks without problem.
So it all points out to your battery.
Phone vibrating to power button means it's responding perfectly. Not sure about the light on the sensor only htc technician can tell.
But what I can say is if your trackpad button lights out red always then you got a brick on your hand.
Nope the trackpad isn't red so I guess that's a good sign. I've ordered a new battery and should have it later this week. Let's see if that fixes the issue. Will report back. Thanks all!
So, a new battery has arrived, however, it hasn't helped as the phone won't charge (no orange light) or turn on...... Since I live in Australia, I don't know anyone else with this phone. Is there any other way for me to revive my brick of a phone?? Thanks

Get a universal charger for your battery.
Sent from Spaceball One.
This is a rough situation. Even with my DS I've had situations where nothing would happen when I tried to restart it, in particular when I let the system run all the way down. It is as if the battery needs to have some charge for it to charge more. I have three batteries though (the stock & two Anker 1900's) so when this happens I just swap out the battery with one that I charged in the external charger, and I haven't had any real issues with them long-term. Since you bought a battery, what battery was it, and do you think it was charged when you got it, and do you have an external charger to verify that the charge is solid when you put it back in the phone? Your phone may be completely dead however, but at this point, I don't think anybody on the thread really can tell. This make sense? I don't want to say, "buy a set of Anker 1900's with an external charger" but it was cheap enough vs. the cost of the phone, and the DS does seem to be a good one overall.
Hi All,
So I got an external charger for the battery and it arrived yesterday. I then proceeded to charge the battery and hours later, no luck. The phone still doesn't turn on. When I hit the power button, one of the sensors on the top left turns red slightly, shortly after which the phone vibrates. However, it doesn't turn on.
Where do I go from here?
Thanks
have you tried to disassemble your phone at all? you said liquid was spilled in it, could take time for corrosion to turn up. maybe a little electronic parts cleaner or rubbing alcohol may help out
Nope I haven't tried to disassemble it yet but is that the only option remaining? If yes, I might have to give it a go because this phone is now as useful to me as a brick, in its current state.

Nexus 5 gets extremely hot after charging overnight

Last night I charged my new nexus 5 with the charger my wife always uses with her galaxy s3. I noticed the charging icon turned on (lightning symbol) before putting the phone under the pillow.
I woke up this morning realizing the phone is extremely hot and it seemed like it hadn't been charged at all.
I charged the nexus 5 again with its original charger and everything wad just fine.
Anyone has this problem before? Will the extreme heat damage the phone or the battery at all?
Thank you
Please don't put your phone under your pillow.

Absolutly... and do not use other wall chargers I would say. Especially if you haven't tested it with your phone yet.
But... that still sounds strange imo, it obviously should be hot while charging under a pillow, but why would it be discharged and still hot way after the normal end of the charging ? I'm thinking of a black screen of death i'm afraid..
Happened in the past with my optimus 2x until i got a kernel which fixes it.
And so, exactly the same situation was happening sometime before the fix ; put on charge during the night and in the morning, got a very hot powered off phone with an empty battery despite beeing still pluged...
Just my 2 cents

just put in water itll cool it off....

keeping the N3 plugged @100%?

so, I've always thought that with lithium ion batteries, it's okay to just keep the device plugged in, even with it's fully charged, but I just noticed this: (see pic)
it says to unplug the battery... I've always kept my devices plugged until I leave the house (which obviously means being kept plugged overnight)... should I be worried with the Note 3?
Not at all. It just says to save energy. If you see after 100 there is no charging symbol. Go green initiative. Relax.
Sent from my SM-N900 using Tapatalk
The supplied manual does say to not keep in plugged at 100% all the time. (decreases life to more number of recharge cycles)
If the battery is at a relatively cool temperature (say less than 100f/38c) then keeping it at 100% for extended periods is fine. In reality the phone stops charging and lets it discharge to a fixed amount, some phones it's as much as 5%, some it's just 1%, but regardless the charger is off, no trickle, etc, and it's not harming the battery.
So yeah, just leave it on the charger until you need to use it, no need to hover over it and unplug it as soon as it's finished or any such silliness.
No worries on keeping your phone charging even it reaches 100%, remember we are using the lithium ion batteries.

I don't know if it's related to this... I left my Note 3 plugged and was playing Kingdom Rush, it was really really hot I can't even touch some part of the screen, then suddenly it just died... the screen froze and then became black... I tried everything, from leaving it discharhing to charge it all the night... but it didn't power on So I brought it in a samsung center, and now I'm 1 month and 10 days without my note 3...

You probably had a faulty unit.
If the phone reaches burning temperatures it will try to underclock, then it will shutdown to prevent damage.
Maybe the thermal pad wasn't set properly on yours, or maybe your battery was faulty and overheated.
In normal usage keeping it in at 100% is normal.
Do not keep it there for more than a week, that's what the safety manual tells you.

It says to unplug the charger. Doesn't matter if you let it charging. It just says, if you remove the cable, also remove the charger from the wall to conserve energy.

Considering the options to use it as a desktop are ingrained in Android itself (Daydream when docked/plugged, screen on when plugged and keep wifi when plugged) it's pretty safe to asume it's not harmful.
Ideally you should keep the battery between 30 and 90%, that'll buy you a whole two days extra with your battery in overall life.
The whole 'unplug' thing is just another one of those pointlessly redundant, irritatingly ridiculous eco initiatives that make about as much difference as a mosquito does to the rotation of the planet.

S7 started turning off, Replaced battery and same thing, Thinks its dead?

Hey guys, As title says, So the story on this thing lol Bought it new I believe 1.5-2 years ago, battery got bad, so this spring in february I replaced the battery my self, I had ordered 2, Both certainly a genuine battery, I had a S7 so I wanted a spare for mine when IT came time. After battery replacement phone was great again, good as new! then as of 3 days ago random shut offs. battery reads 80% shut off, Then I noticed If I left it off for a few hours or all night and turn it on in the am 0%! Tried charging and It's not taking a charge really, It went to 9% and stayed there for ever and was getting hot so I didn't want to risk it. ok so bad battery, this morning I swapped in my OTHER spare new battery, and Let it run up to 100% before turning on for first time, All seemed good! then all the sudden after 6 hours (before it was like every 10 minutes it'd shut off.) It started doing it again, Same thing battery is dead it figures, But it can't be.
Thinking perhaps the board it's self or something just ain't right? :\ Any thing to check or tips/tricks? I tried googling and came up empty handed.

It's likely the batteries you have are not genuine. Fake copies don't have a control chip which interfaces with the device. Your phone is shutting down to protect itself from overheating and other problems caused by copies.
There are some great copies out there but trust me they're still copies.

Yeah that's for sure on the copies, I had looked at how to compare what I had VS the fake ones and they seemed to be genuine? The batteries came from 2 seperate sources as well so hard to say, if the first one I put in was a copy then it did last a while but surprised then that my 2nd one never made it more than a few hours and the same issue. But you just never know. Everybody claims your buying a genuine battery but I'd assume the listing prices are tell tale of a fake/copy lol
Monitoring the battery and either the voltage sensor is bad or the battery, it'll chwrge and say it's full but yet voltage goes to 3.4v, then if I plug it in again it'll go up to 4.2v, once I unplug it, it drops of course, I was using a battery burn program and Itll drop from r. 2 to 3.4 right away, I got it to run for 15 mins one time then it dropped off, otherwise another time from 4.2v it dropped to 3.0 then shut off after starting th test in like 20 seconds, reports battery immediately as 17% after re booting.
This battery sat for a while so will try a 3rd fresh battery and hopefully genuine, though I suspect my past 2 were genuine.
Wanted to update this for anybody who may find this thread off google. I got the same replacement battery again Which was the fix, Asked the seller and they said they'd shoot me a new battery, Again whether genuine or not... Well they claim genuine. I let the phone charge to full and Performed the battery draw test by running the 2 apps to bog the phone down and make everything run to 100%. ran like that 0 issues for about 2 hours, Voltage was very stable the whole way through, before It would maybe hold for a few mins then shoot right down from 4.0 to ~3.2V. Even now after a hour It was still well above 3.7V. My old s7 battery was exactly that, sat unused on my shelf for ~2 years because it was mis-placed and even installed it was no good either.
