If you root stock ROM, you'll get an update, but you won't be able to install it, because your system partition would be detected as tampered and update would fail. You need stock untouched ROM to update. If you have custom ROM, you won't get update at all.
It all comes to this - you have to have Completely stock rom without root (not unrooted but completely stock)

Can I officially update my phone still?

I've rooted my moto G and attempted to install CWM but i think that the stock recovery has flashed itself back, this is because i can only access CWM via the ROM manager. I'm still running the stock ROM that came with the phone but i've removed some apps, will this effect me updating the phone to 4.4 kitkat once i receive the update? Thanks in advance.
It could. It depends on what got updated.

It depends on several factors. If you have an unbranded phone, then you shouldn't have an issue. You should still be able to get the OTA updates.

Moto G Update Error!

I have Moto G XT1033 which was rooted using Modaco's PaulOBrien method. Now i need update it from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 with OTA. I have received update notification but when i try to install it gives Error.
What should i do ? How can i update to 4.4.4 without formatting the data.

Not sure if this helps?

If you've flashed a custom kernel its the most likely reason for the problem in my experience, but also I think CWM and TWRP don't handle the OTAs well (Philz recovery does). So you need to be on Philz or stock recovery (which will mean re-rooting afterwards if you go stock) and stock kernel for your region.

[Q] [XT-1033] If I Root and Stay on Stock Room,,

If i Root my XT-1033 Device and stay on stock rom , May i get the official Lollipop update ?
If yes , Can i update without any issues ?
You'll definitely receive the update, but you can't install it if you are rooted.
Even unrooting won't work. The system partition has to be COMPLETELY untouched.

The same question was asked in the Motorola forums yesterday and the moto rep said....
as long as you have stock recovery and unaltered firmware, you will be able to install the update with unlocked boot loader and root, but you will lose root after install.

OTA updates and TWRP

Hi everyone! I have a 2013 MOTO G (XT1032) with unlocked bootloader. I installed TWRP so I could flash the GPE version of 5.1. A few weeks ago, I received a notification that I could install the November 2015 patches, but every time I download them and choose to install, the phone reboots and instead it goes straight to TWRP.
My question is... how do I install the OTA updates? do I have to remove TWRP? is that easy?
thanks a lot!
For ota , stock recovery is must

Do you think it would be easy to switch to stock recovery, flash the ota, and go back to twrp?

I have done (return to stock recovery). It gives an error during the update- android toy wit an exclamation mark and `error' below. I it's seems it requires an original stock room.
You need an unmodified /system folder.
Try my Optimized GPE ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=58538831

Confusion with official Marshmallow upgrade for rooted stock rom

I flashed TWRP recovery and rooted my Moto g3 XT1550 but im on stock ROM itself. Now I got a OTA notification of Marshmallow update.
So, can I download the OTA & install it without unrooting or flashing stock recovery?

No! There should be no confusion here, the ONLY possible modification that can be done to your phone where you can accept a OTA update is an unlocked bootloader, NOTHING else. No Root, no TWRP, no Xposed... Your software status should show official and if the /system partition has been modified it will fail. PERIOD.
You cannot install an OTA without returning to PURE stock, not just unrooting and flashing stock recovery, you need to have an unmodified /system partition (root and then unroot is still a modified /system partition). Flash the factory image that matches your current software, then take the OTA, and flash TWRP and root again.
