Anyone know if this is possible or do we need to wait for a nexus rom?
We know the moto x is capable of listening with the screen off using moto voice but I would rather use Google now directly like the nexus phones.

Setup Moto app on your phone it overlays Google Now and listens and responds when screen is off.

I understand the moto app transfers requests to Google now. Would it not be faster if we bypassed moto voice and just directly use Google now like the nexus?
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk
You'll only be trading off a bit of speed for significant battery life. The Moto app uses the dedicated low-power CPU core to listen for your catchphrase. Google now doesn't.
To be honest, with the tweaks and bug fixes over the years, transferring to Google Now from Moto Assist has gotten much faster. I don't think the trade would be worth it.

I'm wondering if Google now does utilize the low power CPU core. It would be nice if they at least gave us the option.

YES it does. It worked on the Moto X (2014). Just tested on my Nexus 5 with the screen off while plugged into wall charger and it works.

weird. maybe i am wrong and it is phone specific. my N6 works when screen is off and phone is not plugged in so maybe it is something in the phone itself.

Yeah the Nexus 6 is the only phone i know that works.. I thought maybe with this yr Moto that it would work but apparently it doesnt. I prefer Google now over Moto software cause of faster response.

I was wondering if anyone knows of an app or a mod coming out where voice command will work on any screen/if the screen is off? Just curious.

Someone will eventually make it. The thing is without a dedicated processor like the moto x has, the battery drain would make this phone's battery even worse.

Also this mod could be combined with some intelligence:
* When charging, enable 'always on' google now
* Otherwise google now from lock screen enabled only with double press of power button
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, has there been any progress on this front? I would love me some always listenings.
I actually want to permanently disable it, whenever i long press my headset button which i used to set for rewind the mp3 i'm currently listening, google now popup.....

Isn't this what you're looking for? I don't know if it uses the low-power core and whatnot, but it seems to do what it's set out to do at least.
Thought the charger socket was damaged until I noticed it's 'upside down' compared to every other device I've ever had.
It's the same with s4, n4 and all other Androids I've used.

No, checking a list of all the devices I've had over the last 10 years it's definitely the other way round and it seems to be a modern trend.
Please provide a photo of your phone's USB.

Ok Google only works from the home screen on 4.4.x versions of android, the moto x has a special always listening function built by moto as well a chip that has low battery usages that allows for the active listening function anytime. Its probably possible for the nexus 5 to do the same but it would drain the $h1t out of the battery.
In moto x it called the "active display".. In which the phone always listening thru its mic. If somehow our nexus 5 can have this feature would be awesome..
Sent from my Nexus 5 via XDA Premium HD
No, this is not possible as we do not have the same chipset as the Moto X.
utter! has "always listening even when screen is off" functionality (and much more).

Active Display is actually a notification feature that shows you what notifications you have while you're screen is off. It powers on your screen while you're phone is locked to show you notifications periodically. This feature was developed for the amoled screen that the moto x has since that type of display can light up individual pixels and not the whole screen to save battery. But active display has been ported by a few different custom roms now like Omni.

Without installing an App with the "always listening" feature it is not possible.
There are Apps for that.
Open Mic+ is a good one. Use it myself.
I think many users would love to have a stock based rom that has most of the moto x great features, such as active notifications, flick wrist camera gesture, always on voice commands. Any dev here looking for a challenge?
It's not possible without GREAT battery drain.

Not just the voice commands, Active Display is meant for AMOLED screens as they are able to keep black pixels turned off, saving a of battery. The screen on the Moto G would require to completely lit up even on a black background. That pretty much defeats the concept of AD, imo.

I wasn't aware of this. You're absolutely right, the Droid Mini does have Active Display.
After googling a bit, though, it seems that the Droid Mini's AD works a little different than the X's; it makes use of other sensors to turn the screen on based on the user's proximity.
We seem to be looking in the wrong direction with this Active Display thingy

I am wondering if anyone knows how to use an android phone (especially a galaxy s5) as a live streaming webcam?
I tried some app in the past (I dont remember name) and when I tried to live stream to youtube, the battery had some issue where it drained really fast.
I'd like to use the back camera as a webcam to live stream to youtube instead of having to buy a separate webcam or camera.

Get a camera, you'll get better results, better battery life and it will be easier.
I doubt any phone would do this without draining battery quickly.

Maybe, it might at least prolong how quickly it drains, no guarantees though.
I still suggest that you get an actual camera though, you'll eventually be dissatisfied with using the phone anyway, so may as well just give in and quit trying to be cheap, otherwise, you aren't that serious about what you want to do on YouTube.
Cameras are pretty cheap these days, do yourself a favor and make the smart choice, you won't regret it.

there are many guides out there how to do it. but the battery is the issue. it will use power more than it can charged. also the phone will get very hot.
