How to root Samsung Galaxy A8? - General Questions and Answers

I am working in China, I have just bought a Samsung Galaxy A8. How can I root it?
I have tried Kingoroot without success. I tried a few other one-click root PC apps, they all can't do it.
Let me just say I'm what you guys might call a noob, I don't really understand this stuff yet.
I mainly want to root the phone so I can install Google Play, Android phones in China are not set up for it unless you root the phone and configure it yourself.
I'm dead keen to do this, as it annoys me greatly that I bought a phone and am seemingly denied the regular usage of that phone.
So in my research I also heard about a thing called Odin which you can use to install a new rom on a Samsung phone. And I came across a Chinese website which gave info on a rom you can install on an A8 which after installation means the phone is rooted. I got Odin and the rom now but I'm clueless what to do next really.
I'm thinking the phone has to be rooted to use Odin on it anyway, am I right? And if I do install the rom, it will wipe the phone right? Lose all the data and apps I've installed on it, right? I don't want that to happen, is there a mway to secure the data, put it all back just the way it was beforer the 'rooted rom' is installed?
Like I said I'm clueless really, but I'm trying to proceed cautiously, I'd be grateful for any advice.

I think that I'm going to have the same problem next week, when I get my new Samsung Galaxy A8
Have you tried methods from this page?

I found this from another thread (posted by psafx):
Hello,
I'm seaching for a root method that works for Galaxy A8 device, anyone can root it please help.
On A8, it's Android 5.1.1 with kernel 3.10.9, KNOX 2.4
Thank you very much.
EDIT: found a solution hxxp://choimobile.vn/threads/a800f-spacex-kernel-v0-1-auto-root-busybox-android-5-1-1.60311/

In that link they say, that Frama Root App (Galaxy A8 is not on the supported devices list) worked for A800YZ in their case, but some users have had problems. Can I safely try it, without worrying that it could damage my phone? (Losing knox 0x0 is OK!)

Easy Root
so you can Easy Root almost any phone (maybe) with no risks , no data loss and absolutely no brick , follow the steps.
1_Make sure that your phone is plugged in and it have "USB Debugging" enabled ( you know how right ?)
2_Download Mobogenie for PC here >upload<<<<<.mobogenie.com<<<<</mu/release/Mobogenie_Setup_3.3.7_10002<<<<<.exe
"REMOVE THE <<<<<"
3_after the setup is done open it and click on "Please connect to your device"
4_after the device is connected go to "Toolkit" tab in the middle left and choose "One-click Root"
make sure you have internet access !
then you'll notice a small wide white status bar , that means you're starting the Root operation
5_after that a window will open with your phone model shown on it asking you rooting or no
6_click in Root and wait until it's done , then Congratulations on your safely Rooting
I hope i helped you

No you haven't helped at all to be honest, your post seems like spam.
None of these automatic one-click root programs can currently root the Samsung A8, if you had read above you would see I've already tried most of them, the best of them actually, KIngoroot, Framaroot, KIngroot, all ineffective. So you honestly think your little app can do it?
Is there anyone out there with real help to offer?

I am in a similar situation to you. I used Odin and the SpaceX A800F firmware however all goes fine until the writing of the new firmware begins. The log prints out the write has failed and then I am presented with a mandarin screen saying the device is locked out and I need to visit samsung.com/cn. I can reset the device and use as normal.
My quest to crack this continue and will let you know if I succeeded. 加油!

Having the same Issue
My phone died on me and I had to run out to get a new one. I forgot China has restrictive programs and custom OS to block anything they don't want.
I am trying to root the phone and hitting walls. I might to take to a shop and do it.

can i flash polish language to A8 ?

Disable android device manager in device administrator tab and go to download mode then flash spacex kernel. (Disabling will remove frp lock) I tried it's worked on my a800f

bro i have root file for Samsung A8 A800YZ and i have rooted my phone. if some one need the file, i need some donation before i can send the file. its easy to use, just flash it using odin. thanks.

So I finally managed to root A800F 6.0.1 thanks to @rs1981
Link for TWRP: http://www.4shared.com/get/oUigxM-6ba/TWRP_302-0.html
Downloaded supersu from:
1. Make sure usb debugging is on and oem unlock is on
2. copy supersu file into phone
3. Turn off phone and go into download mode (vol down+home+power)
4. Connect to pc and flash TWRP file via odine (make sure you untick autoreboot)
5. When flash passes unplug phone and hold (vol down+home+power) immediately once the screen turns black switch to (vol up+home+power) even if you see the red error keep holding and TWRP will open
6. Flash the Supersu file that you copied from TWRP and wipe delvik cache then reboot to system
Supersu should be installed and you should have root.
Thanks again @rs1981

Hp 8 1401 root

I didn't know where else to post this so I thought I would put it here.
I recently just purchased a HP 8 1401 tablet and I'm wondering on the root method for it? any help would be great!
Try SRS Root.
Sent from my Karbonn A10 using XDA Premium HD app
I used the cydia impactor to root - its working (like with the most other android-devices).
But after rooting the device, i got the problem, that the tab is factoryreseted after every reboot! Any one else with this problem or has anybody an hint to disable the resetting to factory defaults after every reboot?
Edit: is there anyone, who can build an TWRP or CWM for this tablet ???
(sorry 4 my not perfect english! )
were you able to get past the factory reset cycle everytime it reboots? i am experiencing the same issue and i cannot get rebuild it everytime it reboots. please let me know.

sorry - no chance
The problem is not coming from busybox like on other tablets. So i have no idea to solve this. Only way to disable the reseting on every reboot is to enable "fast reboot" option in the build.prop,-file. If that's not the way you want, you have to flash back your factory image. Because there is a bug in the factory-recovery (not mounting SD-card), you can only use the adb-flash-option!!! If you are back on the factory 1.0.7 Firm, there is an OTA-update to 1.0.8 available. If you confirm this update, be carefuly to root again. You can NOT flash the factory firmware again to date, because there is a date-check inside the factory-firmwares, so you can't flash an older ROM over an newer!
how would i get about reinstating the main firmware i rooted mine also and its doing the same thing with the factory reset ........
Multiple efforts, no result.

Being an avid user of GravityBox, a device without it isn't worth having. A three days ago I was handed down an HP 8 1401 from a cousin, within that time, I've had it factory reset on me twice, primarily due to the fact that this device really doesn't like a root. At first I followed this forum using the earlier suggested SRSRoot. Long story short, it didn't work because SRSRoot could not detect the device, and yes it was over mass media storage, the proper way to connect it.
I later moved on to Root Genius, where if you reset your device, or shut it off, it factory reset. Then I rolled with it and promised to always charge it, then out of the blue it just factory reset. yay.
Don't try rooting this device. HP are rooting nazis.
Also, my device now has the reset issue
Join the club
Unfortunately I am another sucker with the continuous reset so hoping one of you genius's out there can solve it.
I was trying to test the otg to a 3g dongle and couldn't access wireless and networks so tried to root and bingo- reset every power down!!!!!:crying:
good news;
there is an update to Android 4.4.2 (kitkat) aviable. Look on the HP-Support page for the Software update!
If your device has the "root-reset-bug" you (only) can update by using adb sideload in recovery mode.
yea, i update it but now root is gone , i wanna root back pls help
Updated - still resets and even more issues

I side loaded the update - no difference as far as resetting goes - every power down still gives a full reset. Now I can't go into recovery mode.
Now I know why I stopped buying HP products years ago - I hope someone comes up with a fix soon as this is a right pain in the rs.
U can go to recovery mode by pressing: on and volume up a long time. And when the hp sign comes up let go of the on button, but still pressing the volume up till u get recovery.

Still no one to root it with ota 4.4.2 update on it ?, or did anyone try to placa any custom rom. Is this possible??????
interested in rooting this device... what is the current status about factory resetting?
still resets
I have removed my root and it still resets every time - I hate this - it is a real pest- Can someone design a new rom or someway to overcome this fault.
HP must know and can't care.
Any news on this?
GUYS WITH REBOOT PROBLEM, HAVE YOU TRIED RESTORING JB IMAGE? It is available for download on HP website for this tablet. Just go to HP website > Support > Download drivers > Under "Find my product" type "HP 8 1401 Tablet" > Select HP 8 1401 Tablet > Under "Select or confirm your operating system and click Next" select Android and press Next button > You'll now see "(+) Software - Solutions", click "+" and now select ethier US version or European,Asian.. Please try that and post if it works. Thanks.
So I was able to get the next generation up (1411) rooted with NO REBOOT ISSUE!!!! Try this method on the 1401
I downloaded PDAnet+ from play store and for the PC. It loaded a daemon on my tablet but was unable to root (took forever). Once done I downloaded KINGO Root and it successfully rooted my tablet in minutes. Root Checker verified SuperSU permissions granted all good to go. Hope this helps others.
YOU MUST INSTALL PDANET AND TRY ROOT THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP. IT SEEMS PDANET PREPS THE TABLET FOR KINGO TO SUCCESSFULLY ROOT!!!!!!!!!!!

This is suspicious as hell, I wouldn't recommend doing it!
Official description of PdaNet+:
"PdaNet+ shares the Internet access of your Android phone with your computer or tablet."
Downloading and installing that app for anything about rooting doesn't make any sense.. Be careful people.

Wow I was expecting a thank you rather than being "suspicious'. I am actually a bit offended by this but ill be an adult and understand people's need to be cautious.
In all honesty I have no concrete idea why Pdanet needs to be installed and attempted first, by all means try kingo root first. I'm just letting others know my steps. I immediately Uninstalled Pdanet and the kingo daemon immediately after root. I can say that everything is functioning as intended and the root is true (freedom, game Guardian and lucky patcher all working)
I looked up how to root the allwinner version (33) and came across many people with the same allwinner but belonging to cheap no name tablets. All of them had issues with the other root methods and were able to root via the PDANET/KINGO combo. If you feel too much is at risk to even try this then please don't try it. I respect everyone's privacy and was just trying to share what worked for me. I can provide screenshot and video proof if need be.
Sorry to be so suspicious, I was just trying to help!

Now that I think about it Pdanet had me activate USB tether within the app (which ties all good with the official description of pdanet) in order for it to see my tablet despite the HP g2 drivers being installed. I guess whatever it installs or configures within the tablet and/or computer allows it to be "open enough" for a successful kingo root.
anyone manage to solve factory reset problem?
i tried copy/paste update file from hp web, tried copying it to internal and sd card and USB OTG but when i go to recovery i cant even find it on internal or sd or usb otg. when i chose internal it just say "install from internal complete" and nothing else.
i even tried hard reset, didnt help either
someone please help
tablet is practicly useless
hi
i managed to fix my device from reseting to factory settings after every restart. i dont know how but i did it :smileyvery-happy:
mine problem beside reseting to factory settings after every restart was not beeing able to load update.zip from internal or external memory in recovery. so i have tried fev solutions i found on web. i think i succeeded when my battery dropped below 30% and i wasnt able to start my device so i pluged my charger and device started, i let it little to charge and reboot it to recovery from settings (i had sd card in with update.zip from hp page on it) and i choose apply from external and recovery recocnized sd card and file update.zip on it. i loaded it and installation finished. i rebooted system, set up my google account and everything else, shut down device and turn it back on and everything was ok :smileyvery-happyD
hope this will help

kingo root is safe, if it dumbs anything onto your phone just delete them, i have safely rooted a couple cheap phones with it and see no problem.
I can verify this, too. I rooted about 5-6 devices with it, and it did it flawlessly with them all.
What I remember using it with is the Samsung Galaxy SII (i9100 and i9100g) and a Tab 3 and others which I don't remember.
However, all it does is that it installs SuperSU to your device only, and nothing else. One Click Root is also as known as Kingo, but it installs a custom recovery, too, if you choose to.

I never heard about it, but I just googled it and you seem to be right. But I had it rooted for more than 8 months now, and I see no problems at all. I think that it uploads your IMEI code to their servers for 2 reasons. To know what is your device and get the correct rooting files so that it doesn't load your computer with a huge amount of files for devices that you don't have, and the 2nd reason is maybe they keep a counter or something like that of the number of devices rooted using their app. I said I am not sure about this, but I predict these are the reasons. And again, I didn't have any issues at all since I rooted my phone. However, if you just want to feel safe you can use One Click Root.
This is a post by a Forum Moderator speaking about that: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2503591&page=5

It's about trust! I don't know which phone/s you own, but for Sony smartphones/phablets there's Flashtool.
Personally, I prefer rooting my phone with Flashtool.
Some of its key features:
- unlock bootloader
- root
- ROM flashing
- kernel flashing
I never tried Kingo and I've heard only bad things about it.
What I used in the past- never experienced any trouble- is Vroot. Just to be sure, I followed these steps:
Install Vroot
Let it download the drivers for your phone
Turn off your Internet Connection
Connect phone
Root it
uninstall Vroot
delete all "leftovers"
It won't work with Kingo. Kingo wants you to stay connected to the Internet for some odd reasons. I'm paranoid, so I would never recommend it! What if it sends your phone's IMEI, ID, number to their servers?
Again, it's all about trust!

How do you know it doesn't send your sensitive info to there servers before you turn off your internet connection? ??

I guess it depends on what you consider "safe".
I used KingoRoot to root my tablet, and after it was done, I found under Developer Options, Process, these KingoRoot background apps ...
SuperUser (ads.process)
SuperUser
Its the first one, that fits my definition of "unsafe".
I know this thread is old but I thought I'd add more warnings to Kingoroot.
I just tried to root my phone using Kingoroot. The apk installed and root just fine on Android 4.x.x. and it does require internet connection. It doesnt tell u what it uses it for.
Any ways, I tried to use Kingoroot again on Android 7.x.x and the apk failed the root so I downloaded the PC rooting program from their site. Low and behold, it downloaded a bunch of malwares and virus as bundle.
Long story short, stay far far away from Kingoroot.
KingoRoot update 2018
So installing the Kingoroot Android for PC on my laptop = loads of ****e installed on laptop
Running kingoroot and connecting phone = failed root & loads of ****e installed on phone.
So NO. This software only installs crapware, and does not root android LG phones
(tried with 3 phones - silly me!!)
PROOF AVAILABLE ON REQUEST.
(wankers)
Thanks for your suggestion, will leave away from it.
Can Kingoroot be made "safe"?
I've read plenty of sketchy stuff about Kingoroot. Even so, suppose you use a phone that has no SIM card, that has no Gmail (or a fake Gmail) account attached to it. If Kingoroot would root such a phone, couldn't you get root with it then install TWRP, use TWRP to completely wipe the device, then either reinstall rooted stock or a custom ROM?

Sure I have, and you can expect this to be common practice on every corner. That's just the reality of today's big data collection. So I wouldn't exactly call the root "unsafe" based on that.

So NO. This software only installs crapware, and does not root android LG phones
(tried with 3 phones - silly me!!)

Sorry, which craps installed on your laptop?
And on the phone?
Currently I didn't see nothing suspicious, so if you give me the name of the crap installed I can search on my devices.
Thanks bro!

Hello guys. Its been a few days since i joined this wonderful forums. After going through the threads and posts created by our fellow users, i found out that atleast 30%-40% of the users face rooting issues or many are unaware of how the rooting process goes about for their device. Some brick their phones while rooting and then come panicking asking for help. Now you don't need to worry guys because in this thread i have covered all the available rooting methods with and without PC (However if i have missed anything please do mention in your posts ). If one method fails to work then you can always try the other. Further this thread also includes the general and common methods of recovering a soft-bricked phone or a phone which entered a bootloop while rooting.
Rooting with PC requires you to either flash a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM on your phone and then boot into the recovery and flash your root.zip file (or) by simply connecting your phone to your PC and let the rooting program do everything for you in one click or maybe two :fingers-crossed: . Rooting without PC is a simple android app that roots your phone in a click.
NOTE:
1) ALWAYS TAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR FILES, SMS, CALL LOGS ETC.
2) YOU NEED AN UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER FOR ANY FLASHING! SOME GUYS SIMPLY ROOT WITHOUT UNLOCKING THEIR DEVICE BOOTLOADER. SO IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG NOTHING CAN BE DONE.
3) YOU CAN TRY WHICH EVER METHOD YOU WANT TO ROOT YOUR DEVICE BUT I WILL ALWAYS RECOMMEND YOU TO FIRST TRY THE ANDROID ROOTING APPS FOR YOUR PHONE BEFORE GOING TO PC STAGE.
Advantages of Rooting:
Rooting your android mobile has several advantages but here i have listed some of the best advantages, you will get after rooting your phone.
1) Access all files of your mobile which are present in the root directory of your storage or else by giving root permissions, you can Edit or Delete any system file.
2) Increase your mobile performance by over clocking, by changing the frequency of CPU using 3rd party applications or by simply installing a custom kernel already developed for your device.
3) Increase battery life by under clocking CPU of your device.
4) Installing Custom ROMS which will change the entire looks as well as performance of your device.
5) Internal Memory can be increased which means more room for your apps.
6) Finally, Truly Own your Device, Make it appear in the way you want.
Disadvantages of rooting:
1) Your phone might hard brick. The process of rooting android mobile is very risky and has to be carried out with extreme caution. Any wrong step in rooting can cause your phone to hard-brick.
2) There may be data loss while rooting your mobile. However this is only with those phones which require their bootloader to be unlocked.
3) Warranty of your android mobile can be lost when you root it. This is one of main reason why most decide to keep their android phone unrooted as they cannot take risks with warranty of their mobiles but you can still unroot anytime to get your warranty back as some apps listed below provides unroot. For samsung users, your knox warranty will get triggered if you do any sort of flashing. Using the mobile rooting applications is quite safe if you dont want to destroy your warranty.
For samsung users, your knox warranty will get triggered if you do any sort of flashing. Using the mobile rooting applications is quite safe if you don't want to destroy your warranty.
Pressing the thanks button will hardly take a second. Your thanks encourages and motivates me. :good:
Lets start with the actual process:good:

1) Download root app apk from the given link and install.
2) If you get a pop-up saying installation is blocked, then Click on Settings and tick on Unknown Sources.
3) After opening the app, click on root button or the respective button in the app.
4) Wait till the root process completes. It may take a while so sit back and relax. Once done some apps may prompt you to reboot so click on it.

I know there are some more programs available to root android devices but these are confirmed working. By now you would surely be having root access. If not and you used some other method to root then send me the link so that i can update this thread. To check whether you have root access or not download rootchecker app from here http://www1.zippyshare.com/v/qghHr9UD/file.html
ROOTING USING TWRP/CWM/PHILZ TOUCH1) Download the custom recovery for your device. It will be either recovery.tar.md5 for samsung users or recovery.img for fastboot users.
2) Flash with ODIN or fastboot.
Fastboot command used:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery[COLOR="Red"] recovery.img[/COLOR]
Please note your recovery must be in the same directory of fastboot. recovery.img is the name of your custom recovery.img file.
3) Now you have a working recovery installed on your device. Next step is to download the flashable rooting zip file. I will recommend SuperSu always. Download from supersu.zip from https://download.chainfire.eu/1001/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.78-20160905010000.zip
4) Navigate to the location where you have downloaded the .zip file and flash via recovery.
HOW TO RECOVER YOUR BRICKED DEVICE (COMMON PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS)
What Is Bricked Android Phone and Tablet
Before getting to the guide of unbricking your Android phone and tablet, try to know the 2 types of Android brick device, soft bricked one and hard bricked one.
Soft bricked device - It can still boot into recovery mode or be stuck on the logo. And you have big chance to unbrick it just by flashing a stock ROM or flashing a recovery file.
Hard bricked device - Just like it's name, your device is dead. It behaves like a real brick. You can have no operation on pressing the power button. Thus hard bricked devices cannot be recovered as they are just dead.
If your device is soft-bricked, it may:
1) Keeps Rebooting;
2) Be unable to boot;
3) Boots Straight Into Recovery;
4) Boots Straight Into its Bootloader;
5) Freeze at the start up screen;
BOOTLOOP FIX:
Your device is stuck in boot loop, that is your device keeps rebooting when you are flashing a new ROM and you forgot to wipe all the data of the previous ROM, and your device boots every time with some error and hence will keep rebooting. I would always try the classical method of removing the battery for a few seconds, then put it back in, enter recovery, clear cache and reboot. It always worked for me. In case it doesnt work for you then follow these steps:
Go to recovery mode – press volume up + home screen button + power button does it.
Scroll down to “Advanced”.
Choose “Wipe Dalvik Cache” option.
Return to the main screen.
Choose “Wipe Cache Partition”.
Choose “Wipe Data / Factory Reset” to delete all your settings and apps, using the correct ROM.
Reboot your device.:good:
RECOVERY BOOTLOOP FIX:
OPTION 1: I have taken a samsung device into consideration here. For others you have to use fastboot for flashing the respective files.
Run Odin using an administrator account on your Windows PC.
Switch off your device, go to download mode (volume plus + home screen button + power button ), then press volume up to continue and connect to your PC. When Odin recognizes your device, click PDA option and navigate to the recovery.tar file where you have downloaded it. Select recovery file and hit START. The flashing process will complete and Odin will show a PASS button with green background, your device will be rebooted.
OPTION 2:
If the above method doesn't solve your problem then you have no option but to flash the official stock firmware either using odin or fastboot which may result in apps and data loss in some cases.
BOOTS STRAIGHT INTO ITS BOOTLOADER; FREEZE AT START UP SCREEN FIX:
Simply flash the stock firmware.
NOT BOOTING:
If you can enter download mode or fastboot mode then you are good to go. Simply flash the firmware. If it doesn't boot at all then i am sorry, you have hard bricked your device.
I hope my thread has helped you out. I would recommend you to try KIngRoot first (both PC and W/O PC).
Regards.

Hi, I have a Asus Zenfone Go ZB452KG
And Im trying to root it but I only see guides to the Go ZC500TG/Z00VD (using the search of the forum and around internet).
I even found a person with my same question but the link they gave didnt contained info for the ZB452KG but for the ZC500TG.
I found a couple of websites around internet but they seem suspicious, someone have the same phone and knew how to do it ? Or someone else know where i can find a trustfull root way ?
Thanks

Hi, I've been active on the XDA forums for a while, and spend most of my time in the forums for my samsung galaxy note 101" 2014 smp600. This puppy has been flashed, formatted, bricked and fubarred many times. I'm currently running the Orion build of Marshmallow from this site. I recently
got the same model for my wife which has OEM upgrades to Android 5.11
Both of these tabs need work which my usual forums won't provide support, (or a response)for. I need to A: change my bootloader to the KK version in order to comply with the requirements of a Nougat ROM (which was unstable with my current bootloader. Funny that when I asked about identifying a bootloader, all I got was a snippy reply that the bootloader is "named" the same as the droid version it came with??? All I know is that I NEED to getthis bootloader onto my sp600. HEREIN lies my concern: I HAVE ODIN setup on a laptop, with CFautoroot, and the Windows drivers, etc. I DID work on my tab a few years ago. But I do NOT, in any way TRUST said setup to run on either of the sp600 I have.
So, I am NOT a noob, I have experience flashing almost anything on several devices. THIS is MY question: CAN I download and flash a KK bootloader WITHOUT ODIN or a pc??? And are ANY of the one-touch-root apps that you THANKFULLY wrote about usable and SAFE to use for such things? I have no experince with these and it is damn hard to find info on them anywhere. I just need to know about the bootloader and basic root access setup without a pc. I saw several suggestions to use King root and then an app to removed and repkace it with SuperSU for security.
Please give me a direction of some kind. All is appreciated info. ODIN and WINDOWS SUCK!! ;-DeaNoD

Thanks for the info. From what l've read about Kingroot is that it installssome pretty dicey "extras". What have you heard about the SuperSU Me app? It is supposed to remove Kingroot and replace it with SuperSU. I am now reading up on flashify to learn more of how it works. Any further attempts to use ODIN are off the table for me. I'm surprised that someone like chainfire of ssu fame hasn't come up with something better than running ODIN on Winblows. Thanks ;-Deano

Made one last valiant effort to run Odin or Heimdall on my laptop. Then I found that EVERY download of any .rar files related to their use were corrupted. So that put the final nail in the coffin for ALL PC based solutions in this case. As for chainfire, IIRC he was involved with Odin lite which then became Flashfire. I could find no further suggestions that indicated FlashFire could be used to root a device PC -Free. I have just tried several different CM 14 versions n my 600 over the past day or so. After much grief and a close bricking, I landed back on CM 13 Liquid Dark. Will not likely try CM 14 again untilI can fix my LP bootloader probs. Thanks for the input, ;-DeanoD

ok so i used this link to root my phone with king root http://techbeasts.com/root-galaxy-express-3-j120a/
Required downloads:
Download and install Samsung USB drivers
Download and extract Odin 3.11.1 on your computer’s desktop
Download boot image for your phone: ENG_BOOT_J120A_PG1
Download KingRoot and Super SUME APK files. Extract the folder and copy the APKs to your phone’s internal storage.
How to flash boot image to make the phone root-able
Open Odin.exe from the extracted Odin files you downloaded on your computer’s desktop.
In Odin, click the “AP” tab in Odin and select the ENG_BOOT_J120A_PC1.tar for your device that you just downloaded above.
The only options checked in Odin should be Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time. No other options should be ticked.
Now put your phone in download mode. Turn it off first. Now press and hold Volume Down + Home + Power buttons. As soon as it boots up, leave the keys. Once it shows warning, press Volume Up to continue.
Connect your phone to your PC while Odin is open.
Once your the ID:COM box turns blue in Odin after the successful connection, click the Start button.
It will flash the boot image file and reboot the phone now.
Install Kingroot
Now on your phone, go to settings > security > allow unknown sources.
Open a file manager and locate the copied Kingroot APK file.
Tap the Kingroot APK file and install it.
Once installed, open Kingroot from the app drawer.
Tap the Android Icon on the screen shown in Kingroot or if it’s already processing, let it do that.
Kingroot will start finding an exploit to root your device now. As soon as it finds an exploit, it will root and reboot your device.
Replace King User with SuperSU
Install Super SUME APK just the way you installed Kingroot.
Open Super SUME from the App Drawer now.
Follow the instructions on-screen to finish the Super SUME procedure.
Super SUME will begin to uninstall Kingroot in favour of SuperSU now.
After uninstalling KingRoot it will install SuperSU.
SuperSU will appear in app drawer after installion. That’s all.
NOTE: sometimes when u flash the ENG_BOOT_J120A_PG1 file to get root with king root it wont work try rebooting trying again or flashing file again with odin i had to flash 3 times in some cases.
READ ALL BEFORE TRYING ROOT IMPORTANT!
and after i got king root to root my phone through this method i had to downlaod a different copy of supersu me pro from i think this link https://apkpure.com/super-sume/darkslide.com.supersume if its not the right one then just google a pro copy apk but yea so once super user is done with king root and u have a copy of supersu me pro that works just run it u may have to do it a few times and it may act funny or seem to pause half way through the root process but if it dose (like it did on mine) just have supersu app installed and run it while supersu me pro is running and it should install sucessfully keep trying till it dose thats what i did oh btw when u get super user with king root download link to sd and freeze all these apps ok (scrole down)

and keep runing supersu me pro and supersu me untill it installes root succesfully that worked for me
also i JUST got viper4android to work with samsung galaxy express 3 btw fallow the guide in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFqbz8Ytjx0 and download the files from the mega link in description of video.
and now i have supersu and viper4android NOTE: be sure to have installed bussybox before trying to install viper its needed i got my bussybox from fdroid.
also if u want to get xposed modules working download an app called flashfire i think 0.53 is the latest once u have root with supersu and download and install xposed framework wanam 20161128 and flash the zip with flash fire and a side note the newest copy of gltools also works with driver support i havent had a single problem with gltools. if ur system ui crashes after boot eather keep rebooting untill it stops crashing or unsinstall an app u may think caused the issue or unfreeze an app that may be causeing it dont freeze apps unless u think its safe do it at ur own risk and freeze only apps i have found to be frozen with little to no problems. as far as xposed modules go lucky patcher installs but dosent work right due to not being on a custom rom and device id changer free works fine and xinternal sd works great and xprivacy works great and android n ify works great also gravity box for 6.0 marshmallow works fine but i only used it to make volume buttons switch tracks and for a battery bar i recomend not useing it for anything else as it has caused my phone to freeze and crash and bootloop so if u want a battery bar and to change tracks on lock screen use gravity box if u dont need those things then dont use it at all or at ur own risk.
so now u have viper and xposed and supersu enjoy it has been a pain in my ass for a long time so have fun. NOTE: there is no custom recovery for this phone sometimes when u flash these files the phone will bootloop but TRUST ME if it boot loops take the battery out and turn it back on untill it turns on sometimes doing this will force the phone to clear dalvic catch i think because it upgrades all the android apps again so keep removing the battery if it dosent work after about 20 tries the reflash ur stock rom with odin just download a stock rom from google for this device and flash all files ap=ap etc... hope this all helps
Thanks for the reply back! I had originally followed those directions from that site and it didn't work the first time. I kept trying different versions of Kingroot and Super SU ME with no luck, then I decided to try Kingroot 4.1 and a zip file that when extracted and ran from terminal is supposed to replace Kingroot with Super SU. It only partially worked that being when an app asked for root it was Super SU asking the permissions. I thought I was in the clear then so I tried to let the Super SU app update the binary, but it failed. So I downloaded Flashfire and flashed Super SU zip and it worked and I thought I was hot sh*t until it rebooted lol. When it rebooted it gave me the "Unauthorized software found on this device. Please take it to an ATT dealer blah blah blah". So I downloaded factory firmware and tried again only this time before I used Flashfire to flash the Super SU zip I went and deleted all the Knox crap and most of the other stuff in your list above and it worked that time lol. I already have Xposed and a bunch of other root apps on there working pretty well so far. It's a neat little phone for a cheapy. I have an S6 as a daily driver but I like toying with the Galaxy Express 3 when I can. My driving reason behind wanting to root it is because the Wi-Fi chip inside is a brcm43438 which supports monitor mode, sorta. The Raspberry Pi 3 has the same chip and can be used with pentesting tools and since it runs on android also, I hoped to find a way to port the patched firmware to this phone. But for now it gives me something else to tinker with lol. Thanks again for the long reply, I know someone out there can maybe use our methods or a combination thereof to get this phone rooted when it wants to be difficult!

Yea, you're going to find people like that anywhere you go. Don't let it discourage you from this place. Yes, searching first is one of the rules, but sometimes you just can't find what you are looking for! There are a lot of great and very knowledgeable folks on this site. It's where I come to look up pretty much anything I can't figure out on my own. And I come to contribute when I can.

Dead links
Great write up! dead links and a ? about J120AUCS3AQE1
Hi and thanks for the great write up, very clear. My device is a SM-J120A that sports the AT&T logo upon boot.
Have you or any one tried this method with the OTA update that [I think AT&T] pushed on May 1, '17 labeled J120AUCS3AQE1. I have soft bricked device several times trying to use PJ2 and cant find PC2 [above posted links do not work]. One other thing about the AQE1 update I was only able to get it to install by 25%, my Baseband version changed to J120AUCS3AQE1, but the security patch level has remained at Oct. 1 '16 anf the Build number is at MMB29K.J120AUCU2APJ2. Not sure what is up w/that! If any one has a link to the full "4 file" zip of J120AUCS3AQE1 I would greatly appreciate it.
Root successful...........but
I was able to root with firmware version J120AUCS3AQE1 but because mine is an AT&T phone the bootloader is "locked and signed" meaning it's never going to unlock........? I have the latest version of firmware that came out in may 2017 and it will be available to you as soon as I can post an outside web address............ Every Recovery image that I flashed caused everything to fail and a big triangle that said AT&T detected software on your device that is not allowed on our device so I guess this one is never really your own........ but you can Root with Kingroot and supersume pro to get rid of bloatware and such but other than that no custom stuff on this one.
If Kingroot keeps freezing just restart phone and keep trying it took me a long while to obtain root.
Thanks for the Rooting Guide. I found an img file online for a TWRP Recovery for Samsung Galaxy J1, but with the same Build Number (SM - J120A).
1. Should I trust it?
2. If not, is there an exploit for it already?
Really hope someone can help me. Also, Is anyone else loosing wifi connection constantly after rooting?
Cheers,
Express 3 user
Anybody can you please send stock TouchWiz here???
I really need this APK....
NEED HELP!! i made a lot of progress but simple mistakes have me stuck..
I need some help from youi guys, idk igf im just missing something or thinking too much but im stuck somewhere simple because of a silly mistake.... lol -- heres the bkgrnd story: after using the ENG_BOOT and kingroot, i was unable to get supersume to work. in my quest to do so, I ended up with xposed framework installed and working as well as some more apps n tools... well anyway==here's the curveball (#1 - lol) - i edited some fields in buildprop and applied some tweaks - i did an original backup but was unable to find it.. due to the words and windows on my screen being resized (smaller windows larger text, unable to see entire text field and unable to move within individual framed windows li(ke on microsofts launcher homescreen) - so i edited buildprop one more time.... i changed the density and it zoomed in further - double bad move. heres the next one lol - upon reboot into custom android recovery from eng boot - i accidentally wiped/reset phone instead of the dang cache partition. so - now - it reboots, to the WELCOME! ^(language select, accessibility select) START screeb for first time setup. i cannot for the life of me get it to move a window or hope to select AGREE since its "rendered offscreen" on the terms and conditions. unable to use adb, unable to update from ext storage per recovery's settings apparently..
i am however able to use serial com connection and terminal (on bbqlinux) to do a few things and even remotely open shell - idk what i did to buildprop to fubar my screen render, and even after mounting system in recovery i have not been able to push/pull buildprop or edit again, nor usual adb - im frustrated and stopped finally because i know im missing something simple as hell.. #2 ready for the knuckleball? i was able to get TWRP to flash successfully to my phone with ODIN by clicking AP and using nand erase all, repartition and f, reset time - rebooted phone into recovery and its still the eng_boot one. so i cleared cache part mounted system rebooted, then off and reboot to recovery --still no TWRP either.
i would love a copy of a good buildprop file compatible with the engboot and a little help with the buildprop replacement in the given situation lol, TWRP would be a plus - i greatly appreciate your time and help guys and i apologize if i have posted in the wrong thread or something else that is uncooth - its my very first post but im a long time reader and follower as well as an intermediate developer., thank you for your time everyone. this thread is regarding sansung sm-j120a ud with the engboot build. att go phone, no frp lock, secure download is enabled in download mode tho.. -- usb connection to win 8.1 with android studio poison kitchen etc etc - also have bbq linux

Galaxy J7 Sky Pro (SM-S727VL) Root Help

Title says it, apologies in advance for my noobiness on the entire topic of rooting. Got lucky and my previous device was supported via kingroot. Just looking for SuperSU permissions so I can enable my hotspot really.
This phone is through straight talk btw. I've tried Kingroot, iRoot, and quite a few others to no avail. I don't currently have internet due to me moving to the butt-crack of nowhere, Tried srsroot but seems like it interferes with USB tether and says it's successfully rooted but nothing happens upon reboot.
Anyone had any success with this? Thanks in advance.
Anyone?
Please help for the love of god.

CF- Autoroot might do it. I see that it works on other variants for the J7. Here's a link with CF-Autoroot and detailed instructions. Hope it works for you. Let me know how it goes.

Is this your first time rooting a device. after srsroot says successfully rooted did you verify root by going into playstore and trying a root check app.

I tried srsroot 5.1 multiple exploit and it said rooted. I open root checker and it said phone wasn't rooted. I also tried dr. Phone and they didn't have a working root method for j7 sky pro and i was desperate enough to try king root. None of these worked. The guy than mention c.f. auto root, thats for a version of the j7 that was released in other countries. Those variants of the j7 have exoynus processors and us version have snap-dragon processors so the root procedure might brick your phone.

When ever I get some free time I'm going to try using adb commands to try and root.
Hopefully not too much longer before someone can root this thing... I'm also looking!
wondering if anyone has seen this video or tried it??
Code:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtktE0jccnw
I can't open the link but all the videos iv seen on YouTube seems to be j700's and other variants not for s727v.l From my research the devices are a listed under samsung j models but the they all have different hardware, i.e. boards, processors, chipsets,. I did a cross referience with cf-auto root to try and find a divice with the same hardware and builds, there wasnt any other device with the same hardware that would suggest compatibility. Cf-auto root flashes a root file to your device and if it's not compatible you could completely brick your device
Hello, First of, you shouldn't have used kingroot whatever the situation was
However https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.inkwired.droidinfo&hl=en
download this and capture the system and device tray
Yeah but it was worth a shot. I figured if it worked I could replace it with superSu. I will post those specs In a few. When ever. I get time and free WiFi in going to try adv root
System and device
I'm going to try adb root method when ever I get the time

Verizon bootloader is most of time locked you can't flash it.
I may have a method for rooting s727vl. I can't test until I get home where I will have unrestricted data in case something goes wrong. I'm gonna keep this short and simple assuming everyone have
knowledge of using odin.
Developer option usb debugging oem unlock no frp or passwords
Download odin
Download latest superSu, this isn't the same as superuser in the playstore. It's used for rooting systemless root os. Yes that what marshmallow is.
After downloading supersu place it on your phones sd card
This is what I'm not sure on. Download clockwork mod RECOVERY. Zip , not the one in the playstore. And place on pc
Use odin to flash cwm to s727vl
Please refer to guide on installing cwm
After flashing cwm go to it in recovery mode and use cwm to flash the supersu zip file and reboot phone. It could take a few minutes but it should boot with root access. Or wait for auto reboot.
What I'm not sure on is cwm compatibility with s727vl, I couldn't find a yeah or nay on compatibility. Cwm say it's compatible with any android.
Hopefully this will work. Make sure u have your data backed up and your stock rom in case things go south. If anyone try this please let me know the result. I'm anxious to try it but I travel a lot and I can't afford to have data throttled by downloading everything I need and I can't risk doing this until I'm i get home.
