Installing New Roms

I recently purchased a photon Q, unlocked the bootloader and rooted it. All went well until I tried installing a new ROM. I've tried installing both Carbon and CM11 but with no luck. Thankfully, I've been keeping backups of my stock ROM so I'm still able to restore the phone and use it.
I'm currently using cwm 6.0.1.3 , and I had been trying to install the new ROMs via rom manager. I'll try to get more error details up Friday as that's when I'll attempt to install the new roms.
I tried installing the latest nightlies for both CM11 and Carbon.
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

CWM 6.0.1.3 doesn't support SELinux and so it doesn't support any KitKat ROMs (CM11 and newer).
Use TWRP or OR as a recovery.

I wondered if that was the problem. How would I go about putting twerp on my phone? Do any threads cover that? Would it cause an issue with CWM or would I have to get rid of that in order to install TWRP?

The TWRP page for the Photon Q goes over how to flash TWRP.

Any recovery you flash will simply overwrite the previous one. Simply flashing TWRP as normal will just replace CWM.
Same with OpenRecovery, simply flashing OR over CWM will replace CWM with OR.
Let us know if you have questions. I like the fastboot method, but there was an app in the Play Store TWRP Manager - which I have never used, but should work fine.

Well, it worked...sorta. i tried installing Carbon, but there seemed to be some kind of bug that didn't let the wifi turn on(along with some performance issues) and I have horrible reception at my place so that didn't get too far in setting up the phone.
So I installed the latest CM 11 snapshot and that's working great! Pretty awesome to be on the latest version of Android for a change!
Still want to try Carbon though, do they have more stable releases or do you just have to go out on faith with the nightlies?

I run Carbon as my daily driver, no problems.
Post in the thread if you have issues. As always, clean flash before reporting any.

I posted this in a couple other threads as well but since you guys are talking about it... do you think the Carbon is superior to the CM10/11/12 roms? I've found mine to be laggy lately. Maybe it always was I'm not sure.. lol but I was thinking of going to 10.2.1 .. someone on another thread said he did that and it was like having a different phone .. it was so fast.

Please quit cross-posting. You are severely diluting any community effort to respond to you by posting the same question in so many threads...
Truth be told, YOU need to make the decision for yourself. Take a backup of your current setup and try something new, you have nothing to lose but some time. If you don't like it, restore the backup you took (please please take a backup IN RECOVERY before making any changes).

LOL sorry lets not kid ourselves. There are 4 active threads since May 24 in this sub category of the Photon Q. My intention was not to spam-post, however given the slow movement of the forum I posted in a few relevant threads in the thinking that those who were active would have subscribed and were maybe notified Sorry if I did a few too many... for tonite I probably have had a few too many Coronas (Cervesa Mas Fina!).
This device is in a production environment. There is not much room for any downtime on the device so I do not have that luxury of playing with it. All these Photon Q's I would think have the same specs so there must be a general consensus or benchmark'ed result as to which ROM offers best performance with the usability balanced. I do need more of these devices moving forward.
Funny thing, I live within 50 miles of Blackberry's campus and they have failed us yet again. Their passport phone is a little more reliable and less buggy than last years Q or Z models, however I'm still lacking a row of numbers and a dang home and back key. When are they gonna figure it out! Just using the gesture/swipe to get to the homescreen doesn't appeal to me. You can't give me a home button? Anyway #offtopic a little.. but is there no general consensus or are they so close its difficult to pick a winner?

Have tried a number of ROM's carbon, PAC, Cmod, stock ICS, & JB.
Tried different flavours & unofficial versions.
I'm now happier than ever, running stripped JB - removed bloat ware & other obsolete APK's, plus added a few niceties using xposed framework.
Phone is fast - as in no slow downs & pauses, like I was getting with carbon & PAC, battery is unbelievably long life - using an xposed battery saver module, plus I added extended power menu options.
The main killer of all the other custom ROM's is the persistent Bluetooth error during calls. This is something that has been in the ROMs since Cmod wrote the first one, as all the other are built off of it.
If you don't require Bluetooth for calls, then go for it - personally I am finally happy with the JB stripped & tweaked stock.

lol didnt expect to be rick rolled in 2014. i have a nexus 5 running android 5.0 lollipop cataclysm rom. im not downgrading for anything, i basically just wanted to know what rom would offer that, so i could look out for it whenever it would be released for 5.0

I don't think you'll find a rom that includes "all possible options" but im sure you'll find one that fit your needs. In addition you can use the Xposed framework to add some options.

Several Noob questions about custom ROMs?

Hi guys,
I always read in the Xda forum but never wrote or asked a question...usually someone already asked them.
so I have the Mi 5S PLUS...but I hate the miui UI. can't get used to it. And yesterday I finally found that there are custom ROM for this device.
So I got few questions.
1. As far as i know, the source code hasnt been released but should be released soon. should I wait for a ROM that uses the source code?
2. I see that the most popular costum ROMs for this device are - Lineage and resurrection remix. In terms of battery life, stability and bug free rom. which one is the best?
3. I see there is one ROM with the tag [OFFICIAL]....does this mean it uses the source code? if not, what does it mean?

1. Source code is released but rom based on source code are not released yet .You can use them but their are some bugs,
2.You can check yourself
3. Official means official rom from lineage team or other maintainers just like Global MIUI rom from xiaomi is official while xiaomi.eu is unofficial .
You can check for source in rom page for more info about what device tree and source code it uses

The reason that people don't recommend one over the other is because YMMV. I know I came from a cyanogen ROM with my previous phone and dirty unicorns on the phoen before that (along with a whole set of custom ROMs). In the end though, I found them all to be "similar". Yes, some do some things differently like some offer a lot of CPU governors, while others keep the list pretty tight. Some default with swap space on, some don't use swap space at all (this phone shouldn't need swap space). Sometimes the difference between two ROMs is just the launcher.
For me, I don't really like the MIUI launcher. It feels a lot like an iphone. This isn't a bad thing. Some people like it. I just install Apex (from the play store) and my issues with the ROM were mostly resolved. The only remaining problem is MASS STORAGE. But, based on my experience with mly previous phone, I doubt I'll find a ROM that natively supports it. But I know how to hack my way in and get that going (just need root... which requires an unlocked bootloader... and if I am reading things correctly, you need to wipe everything which I currently not willing to do... but may have found a workaround... going to test it out tomorrow).

Wipe everything is very simple connect the phone via USB cable to PC and via twrp wipe everything then past a Rom on the phone and flash it, that's it

Wiping everything is easy, yes, but I want to avoid wiping if I don't have to.
Got the phone rooted without needing to wipe it (yay), but getting mass storage enabled failed on me. I can't seem to write to the file I need to which confuses me... but that is off topic so I'll refrain from boring you with details on that.
Back on topic, if you are switching to a custom ROM you will need to wipe things. I personally would wait for a custom kernel to come out before you start playing with custom ROMs unless the custom ROM has a feature you REALLY want. With my previous phones, the one that had a custom Kernel as well as custom ROMs was a lot more stable and had a lot fewer bugs. The one that had only factory kernel, the custom ROMs were flaky. They mostly worked, but they did have bugs. If I got a phone call or called somebody and they hung up first, it would crash the dialer and the dialer would fail to start again until I rebooted. Now a custom kernel may not have helped that, but since the kernel was based on a previous version of Android, it was unstable.
The current custom ROMs (that I have seen) are all based off of the stock kernel and not newer ones so I personally do not expect to see much benefit in changing ROMs except having different bloat and a different launcher. Well, at lest for the things I use my phone for. But YMMV.

What options are there for flashing a ROM to my phone and keeping it updated?

I'm currently looking to get a new phone to replace my OnePlus One. I am strongly against bloatware and have become very discontent with the lack of continued software support offered by most (all?) manufacturers, including OnePlus and Google.
I am entirely new to rooting, unlocking, or flashing custom ROMs to my phone. However, I want to explore what options are available for using a ROM other than the pre-installed one and keeping it up-to-date myself.
First, one thing I don't understand very well at the moment is: what is required for a particular phone to have different ROMs available for it? For example, if I were to buy a used Samsung Galaxy S6 edge and I wanted to run stock android on it, what is necessary for that ROM to exist? Are there generally a lot of phone/model specific modifications that must be made to the Android source in order for it to run/be usable on that particular phone? Does it depend, at least in part, on which phone-specific features one wants to be usable (I read that the edge on Galaxy Edge phones will not work)?
Beyond stock android, are distributions such as LineageOS effectively stock android + their own suite of additions? Would a LineageOS ROM offer better/worse device-specific support than a stock android ROM for the same device?
Second, if I wanted to install a ROM on some phone and keep it updated, how would the update process work? Would I have to wipe the phone every time I install an update, or can updates be applied incrementally?

Yes, ROMs and recoveries must be built specifically for each model number, they are all different.
Yes, if you flash a custom ROM and then the developer of that ROM releases an update to his ROM you flash that update without wiping but if you switch to a completely different ROM you have to wipe before flashing it.
As for options of which ROM to use, you'll have to experiment and try them to find one that suits your likes and dislikes. What I consider the best option may not be the best option for you. To each their own, as they say.

My goal is to find a stable ROM that will continue to receive security updates and bug fixes even once official manufacturer/vendor support has been dropped. Continuous software updates (i.e. to newer versions of Android) would be great too. I suppose this will depend on the hardware I'm wishing to use. Being new to xda, I've looked around and seen people posting various ROMs for various devices on the forums. But I'm not sure how reliable, stable, or even trustworthy they are. How do I evaluate ROMs posted on xda for those qualities?
LineageOS is one that clearly stands out and offers official support for many devices. Thus, it currently seems like a strong contender for my purposes. But I'm wondering if there are other distributions you would recommend that are on par with, or at least in the same tier as, LineageOS that would serve my purposes?
For what it's worth, being a developer, I would also like to give back and contribute to the community for the device I end up getting.

I'm not sure if they offer a ROM for your device, but Dirty Unicorns might be one to check out

Need a super stable and elder friendly rom for my moto G (osprey) 2gb ram phone

I will be giving it to my mother as her first smartphone and I need to be confident it will work okay for her with minimal tech knowledge needed to fix any issue, can you recommend one?

Can't get much better than the stock rom that comes with it. Can't get much more stable. Why go to custom rom?

My pc got corrupted and lost the factory rom to my phone, even then I dont have that wifi update on it to prevent snooping

No random bluetooth, cellular and wifi driver crashes on this?

Here is the Optimized stock rom for you. You don't need computer to flash it as you can flash it via custom recovery like twrp.

None of them for me.

Try pure nexus ROM,very few app come out of the build and install only what you need.Very stable for me

Stock... You need stock ROM for this situation, it is the most stable and battery friendly and the least confusing. At least they could ask someone who has general familiarity with Android questions without going into menus on Res Remix or AICP or something that would confuse them.
The situation calls for simplicity, stability, and functionality... stock is the best choice. If you don't have your backup, look around here, there are plenty of tutorials on how to go back to stock.

Go with stock rom

I was also looking for a stable ROM for Moto G3 XT1541. Interesting to see all the recommendations here to stay with the stock ROM. My reason for considering a custom ROM was that I've stopped getting system updates: last was around June with Android patch security level 1 April 2017 so I've assumed no more updates are being issued. I'm not comfortable using a system that isn't getting security updates, so is a custom ROM the way to go?
(Hope this isn't considered thread hijacking, happy to post as new thread if so.)

Stock or LineageOS, as they don't have unnecessary customizations.
