Why video sound comes out so bad in live shows? - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, yet another try to record video in a live show... And again.. The audio of it comes so ****ty and distorted.
So i don't expect any solution from oneplus anymore. I even tried to take the microphone gain a little which didn't really helped so i guess it's just the mic isn't so good.
Any ideas how to get good audio in loud environments? I just don't think it's legit that an iPhone 4 can peform good in these kind of environments when the OPO (which is a better device a hundred times) cannot do such simple thing.

There are more than one available video recording apps on the play store that allow you to lvl the audio input whether it comes from the OPO mic or an external hooked up. I use a Zoom H1 with my OPO which has far superior performance for recording audio in loud environments. Plus I can hook in external LAV mics for interviewing

Phones need a decent..

.. microphone. Or at least, a minijack socket. I recorded a video off my artemis yesterday of someone playing drums. It's distorted to hell, it can't handle it and even if it could, it's thin and tinny. I have a great sony stereo mic which I use with my minidisc recorder. It would be great to use it with a phone, or better still, to have a phone with a high quality stereo mic built in. Has this been done or is it likely? Not to mention the video frame rate is terrible.

You're using your phone to record live music, did you expect to record an album with it?

No.
The question is quite straight forward. Anyone else like to have a go?

[Q] Audio Quality on Recordings. Video Attached.

I know this may be a repeat, and if so i apologize. I tried searching the forums but there was nothing in relation to this issue specifically....
I went to a concert on New years with a buddy of mine (who has an iphone 4), and we both recorded videos. The video quality on the NS seemed to be better than the 'iPhone 4", however the nexus audio quality in the video recording was just horrendous. the iphone 4 played the exact same video with lower video quality, but crystal clear audio.
on the NS you could hear nothing but BASS levels. Can anybody explain to me:
1. Why this happens on the NS and not on the iphone4?
2. Can this be solved with using an external headset?
3. Will this be fixed in any patches (720p recording, etc) or is it a hardware issue?
I'll upload the two videos for you to compare.
Edit: I'll have to get the actual video file from the iphone, but this should give you enough of an example.

may have something to do with the software based noise cancellation
Wait, is the Nexus S not hardware based noise cancellation? Correct me if im wrong, but the nexus 1 had a second microphone just for this?
Unless this is patched, this might be a dealbreaker for me as I use my camera recording, and audio recording frequently.

yup NS only has one microphone, i believe it is because there are some new noise cancellation stuff in 2.3...that doesnt really work
unless we are dealing with the some audio auto gain, like the same problem found in the SGS phones
Thanks for the response guys, this might just be reason enough for me to go back to the N1 until the NS has better updates.

Audio Aspect of the Nexus 5

I've been wondering how people's experience of the N5 audio aspect is, speaker wise and headphone wise. Would love to know feedback on this as to site chances in which I could enhance their audio aspects.
If anyone could answer the following queries I have I would gladly appreciate it.
- DSP tunneling (In regards to the 60 hr playback)
- Speakers are Stereo like the N7 2013 or Mono
- Audio codec being used (Preferably in the audio conf file under /system/etc/media_profiles.xml and mixer_paths.xml)
- List all the libs named audio in system/lib/hw
Thanks a million guys
Im pretty sure the audio is mono.

Yup the device output is mono and it's not very good either. The speaker falls weak of everything apart from Bass. It just feels to be lacking. I have used a G2 and the speaker is much louder and clearer, but the speaker on the G2 is only mono too which leads me to wonder whether the Nexus uses the exact same speaker as the G2 but the software on the Nexus limits it's output.
To me audio is quite a big thing, as ridiculous as it sounds I do sometimes play music out of my phone, and I also use YouTube out loud. I have noticed with the Nexus 5 is is sometimes hard to hear notification sounds, especially in the morning when I am on the bus for example. I know it's not just my device there are numerous reports about this around the web and do not confuse this issue with the tinny audio bug, this simply is the speaker quality.
In terms of headphone output, no complaints.

Sorry for the late reply but thanks for your input in this. Very helpful! I'll see what I can do. The idea being the dsp tunneling is what disturbs me the most. I'm tempted to order one to see about it.

Bad audio quality when recording videos

Hey people,
When recording videos I noticed the sound quality is veeery bad, but only when I use the front camera of the stock camera app. Rear camera works fine, so it seems like a software problem. It sounds like there is some kind of extreme noise reduction. Now I found another google camera app here on XDA which records the audio fine on both front and rear camera, but it still sucks that on other apps (like snapchat and instagram) the sound quality still sucks. Can't really find a solution for this on the internet, is there anyone who's found a fix for this?
Oh and I'm on OOS Pie btw. Haven't tried flashing another rom yet as I really love this rom.
Thats sadly an Hardware Thing. Thats why I bought an iPhone 8+ only for concerts... For simple pics I take my OP6
The problem of bad audio when recording is from the first oneplus. Sure it got better buy time but with the first one bass was like you were blowing on the mic, with 5 and 5t bass was like it was sucked out, with the six it just a little bit better, but for a flagship it's waaay too bad some mid range phones are better at this even my old xperia arc has better sound recording in clubs and concert or nay place with loud music

Good audio recording with video

I have a Pixel 1 and absolutely love the audio recording characteristics while video recording. I play drums, and this is the first phone that I can just aim at the drums and play loud or soft, and the playback is excellent. Not distorted, and also very little annoying sluggish or excessive changes in recording volume. Even the deep punchy b ass drum is felt as much as it is heard, and the high end of the cymbals is good. It has made great recordings of live music whether front row or far away. The phone needs to be replaced. Does anyone know of another affordable phone with similar audio recording characteristics? Thank you.
No need to reply at this point. I gambled, and picked up a Samsung Galaxy A51. The audio section seems better than that of the Pixel, and the phone overall is superior to the Pixel, too. $6.24/ month seems pretty good too. Glad I piscked it up.
