I've rooted my phone using the despair kernel on Android M. I flashed via recovery but experiencing WiFi and cell drop outs every ten minutes simultaneously. Not had much experience flashing kernels - is there anything else I should have done?

GIVE IT A SHOT:
you could try StephanMc's kernel. it's stock m preview 3 with root.
if your problems don't occur with this kernel they were either related to a bad dirty flash or related to the kernel.

FROM MY EXPERIENCE:
i'm also running m preview 3 and if i want to try a new custom kernel i always flash StephanMc's kernel first (because it's purely stock + root).
then i wipe dalvik + cache and flash the desired kernel.
if you just want a rooted phone, you can simply stick to StephanMc's kernel.
PLEASE NOTICE:
some custom kernels recommend to wipe system and data and install the stock image (or custom rom) too.
IMPORTANT:
always backup your data! (see titanium backup)
SUMMARY:
as long as flashing stock kernel and wiping dalvik+cache before flashing my chosen custom kernel i will stick to this.
if you experiencing any problems completely wipe your phone, flash stock image, flash custom rom/kernel and restore your data backup.

I recently installed custom Jellywiz rom on my Verizon S3.
My question is if I have new custom rom versions or if I want to switch to a different rom, do I always have to go back to stock firmware and then install the custom rom or can I directly flash over my existing custom rom ?

New custom rom versions: Unless otherwise stated by the developer you can go ahead and just dirty flash right on top of the current one, but if you experience issues then i'd wipe data and cache and do a clean install.
Switching to a different rom: ALWAYS do a clean install (wipe data, and cache), i can't urge how important that is, while you may not have any issues whatsoever, you definitely could encounter issues because each developer may have different changes, and you don't want stuff to mix and match.

Thanks. So just flashing over existing rom after wiping data and cache will work. Will do that. I do not want to go back to stock rom always as that is time consuming.

Yeah this is fine. The way I've always done it. Also in clockwork, go to advanced >wipe dalvic

You can flash stock roms in CWM, but be careful if they don't include a kernel. If you go from AOSP to Stock, you might get a boot loop unless you also flash a stock compatible kernel, and vice versa. Boot loop is easily recoverable of course, but it will scare new users

I installed the beastmode kernel on my phone a while back. I did this after flashing cleanrom 4.2.2, as I was getting what I thought were dropout issues. However, if I would like to flash my phone to a different rom, do I need to reflash the kernel back to stock, or will the rom already have the kernel included? I made a backup of my phone in TWRP before updating the kernal. If I restore the backup, will the kernel revert back to the stock kernel (I'm S-OFF)?

Since you are s-off, if you flash a new ROM, the kernel will also be flashed. The kernel is typically flashed automatically whenever a ROM is flashed. The exception, for those that are still s-on the kernel will not flash automatically, but needs to be done separately in fastboot.
If you simply want to revert to stock kernel and stay on the current ROM, then you can restore your nandroid (which was made pre-Beastmode) or "dirty flash" the ROM (just wipe Dalvik and cache, then flash it again).

Is there any way to restore stock rom without wiping? I currently have stock rom with mods and franco kernel.
Someone told me to flash a .zip of the stock rom on one of the threads on here to achieve that.
I wanted to go back to stock after trying Franco. Then I tried elementalx and my battery life went up so much I don't want to go back.

Flash the system.img and boot.img files (found in the factory image) using fastboot.
If you backed up your phone or made a nandroid before messing around with your phone, that's usually your best option.
I'd personally advise against just flashing without wiping, because the part of the point would be to remove the garbage files, which wouldn't really happen.

You can flash stock ROM and kernel (system.img and boot.img) from the factory image without wiping. While it's okay to go from a custom kernel back to stock kernel, I wouldn't go from a custom ROM back to stock ROM without completely reflashing.

I have stock rom but but with small mods like dalvik optimizing and xposed etc
Hi.
Im a noob on XDA but have enjoyed the freedom of custom roms for some time now on my note 4 (N910C). So far it has only been stock based touchwiz roms. A few days ago i decided to give CM13 a go and since then i have been unable to revert back. Every touchwiz rom (stock and custom) i have tried just ends in a bootloop but when i flash CM13 again it boots up just fine.
I have tried flashing numerous android 6.0.1 stock roms through odin, even from different regions but still for the same version. Its always stuck in a bootloop.
Tried flashing stock and then immediately flashing custom stock based rom (both clean install after wiping and trying to dirty flash over stock rom)
I have done all the suggestions of factory resetting, wiping caches and you name it after clean flashes and even tried them with dirty flashes. Whatever i do i cannot get any stock or stock based rom to boot up.
A few months ago i tried out cm12.1 and had no problem going back to a stock based rom, but after CM13 my phone absolutely refuses to boot anything stock or stock based.
I would appreciate any advice and suggestions. Please ask if theres any more info needed of my device or roms i already tried.

You might be having kernel issues. If the stock you're flashing is a flashable zip then it might not include the stock kernel, if it doesn't include the stock kernel then its leaving the custom kernel from CM13. If that's the case it won't work because stock won't work with a CM kernel.
You said you did the wipes when you flashed, did you mean that you did factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache? Or did you mean that you did the advanced wipe options to wipe system partition and data partition before flashing?
If you didn't do the advanced wipe before flashing then it might help if you did them before flashing. Wipe system and wipe data then factory reset then flash ROM then wipe cache and dalvik after flashing then reboot.

I flash stock roms through Odin with the .tar.md5 file.

Usually if it bootloops after flashing with Odin, you boot to stock recovery and factory reset/wipe cache and it should boot after that.
The times that you tried stock and then went back to CM13, are you rooting and reflashing TWRP again so you can flash back to CM13? Or is it leaving custom recovery on the device even after flashing with Odin? If its leaving TWRP on the device then Odin isn't flashing correctly.
Are you flashing the full stock firmware in Odin? Or are you flashing a modified stock .tar?

I have tried all the factory reset/wipe cache suggested on other threads and websites i have found regarding bootloops.
When going back to CM13 after trying methods to get stock back i flash TWRP again as flashing stock through Odin replaces TWRP with stock recovery again and then do a restore of CM13 through TWRP with all my necessary apps on, much easier than installing everything again after each try (a fresh install of CM13 also works fine with no problems). I also tried various versions of Odin just in case it was a problem with the version i used but every time i get the same same results.
I am flashing full pure stock from sammobile.
Guys i want to try new kernels but no one mentioned how to revert back if iam not satisfied with the kernels or just i have to try different kernels as i see a note saying kernels should be flashed on stock kernel so if i want to flash another kernel over existing custom kernel i have to get back to stock how can i do that will twrp restore works and what partions should i have to restore

should just flash stock boot img if you want to over ride the kernel wipe the cache as of now none of the kernels use ram disc changes so dirty flashing custom kernel over another works fine for the time being

Not sure if flashify works with dual partitions or not but it allows u to back up boot.img
You can always just revert back to stock by downloading the full rom from oneplus, and installing it through official twrp. Usually recommend doing a wipe of everything system included, and then adb side loading the full rom. It will state there is no os installed at the end when attempting to reboot, just continue on and your phone will boot.
