hello done unlock bootloader prevents research update ota because when I makes me "system update" I have a research error updated unavailable thank you try again later.
sorry my english is bad.
Unlocking your bootloader doesn't stop ota. Rooting and changing anything on the stock rom will stop you from updating ota
I'm not sure about this because on stock falcon I was rooted, and had stock recovery and I still updated via ota. But I will say again im not sure if same applies.
You can check FW thread on General subforum and upgrade yourself. Just did that and works fine.

hi, i have a noob question. I'm not a true noob but i never had a "nexus".
Today i unlocked bootloader, installed twrp recovery and rooted my device. Then i flashed only franco kernel to try new screen firmware update.
So i'm stock with cm11s without kernel.
When an update will be released, unchecked CM recovery update, can i update or i have to unlock bootloader again before?
after updated iìll be with bootloader lock or unlock?
Thanks to everyone
The OnePlus One is not a nexus device but it is very close to being one.
No you do not have to relock your bootloader, leave your bootloader unlocked. There is no point in relocking it unless you're doing warranty.
Just untick "Update CM Recovery" in Developer Options if you haven't already. You can flash the new OTA with TWRP.
Hi guys.
I'm also having some questions about the OTA updates and the root/bootloader.
Currently i'm still having the 25R, i unlocked it, rooted it with TWRP, all fine.
I've been using Nexus 4 before, and after lots of Roms i kept using CM for a very long time, so normally i just updated it, and i was still rooted and everything.
But now i keep reading that you will lose root and bootloader if you update the CMs (with OTA?).
So then i have to unlock and root again, so i will need to wipe all data again?
Or is there a simple method to just update and still keep all root etc?
greetings

Nothing will happen to the bootloader. If root is lost after applying OTA, just reflash SuperSU. You can apply OTAs using TWRP.
No wipe needed.
Hello,
I'm guessing most of you already know that the android 5.0 or android lollipop updates started rolling out OTA. My nexus 5 is rooted and its running stock android 4.4.4 with the stock recovery. Also my boot loader is locked. Should I "un-root" my nexus 5 for the OTA update or should I try updating it with root on my phone?
Regards,
cyberusman
It should update with root but you'll lose it. You'll need to unlock your bootloader to root again though. I'd just unlock with boot unlocker and flash factory image personally.

Try other update methods. Root options available in my signature

I took the OTA with root and stock recovery. Updated, lost root, but the bootloader is still unlocked. My N5 is the Google play store edition if that makes a difference. Im I'm guessing carrier specific phones are relocking the bootloader.

OTA doesn't lock the bootloader. All nexus 5's are created equal
Hi all,
I have a rooted Z3 with dual recovery and locked bootloader running firmware 23.1.A.0.690.
Since the OTA to firmware 23.1.A.1.28 is minor, I was wondering if it is possible to flash an update zip file while keeping root and modified recovery.
any idea ?
thanks

Modified bootloader? Do you mean unlocked? If so then you cannot do OTA, is says so explicitly on the Sony site about unlocked bootloaders. But you can make a backup in recovery, flash a stock FTF of that version (System only) then just flash back your custom kernel (Before booting the phone) and restore data from a backup
If you mean locked bootloader then you can OTA, if its a small update then the chances are it wont format system so you will keep root, but if its a large file the chances are it will format system then re-install it so you will lose root.
Just flash a pre-rooted version of the updated ROM in recovery
Sorry, i meant keeping root and modified recovery (not bootloader).
My bootloader is locked indeed and i am on stock kernel.
So, to your point, i should be safe upgrading minor OTAs?
If so can I anticipate sony's rollout of the OTA and flash the update zip? And where can it be found?
Thx

Maybe.... it all depends on whether or not the OTA formats system and reinstalls it. If it a minor update they may not do that so root and recovery (Which is in system for locked bootloaders) are not deleted.
Its a gamble...
to be 100% safe, you will need to get a prerooted flashable zip and flash it
Hmmm... Ok, but upgrading with a prerooted zip involves flashing a full rom not just the update right?
I am ok with that but would rather save the hassle.
Thanks for the advise
Hi,
Happy to report back that OTA process went smooth.
I am now running 23.1.A.1.28 and still have full root & dual recovery!

Benjieb,
Sorry friend but it was not clear to me... you updated via OTA and keep the root?
Yes that's right. I fixed the typo in my last post.

How do you do it? I mean, you were stock .690 berofe ota?you delete anything of stocks apps??because i test to do the ota update but at the end of processus it's says "verrification impossible" and i saw somewhere that's if we touch or delete stock apps we can't ota ....ans if possible, nobody van do a flashable ZIP with just ota update????
I was stock indeed, and you are right playing with system apps probably prevent OTAs.
That's why I deactivate system apps rather then delete them.
I guess you will have to do a full rom flash.
I'm on stock ROM rooted. Updated to. 28 via OTA just only. Root access still available!!

I have had an issue where I cannot receive OTA updates. Whenever I check for updates the reply is: Software up to date as of <date, time>
I have rooted my tablet using the fastboot method however I originally accidentally flashed the OS to blank and softbricked my tablet. After installing the 5.0.1 factory image and installing it using fastboot, I then used CWM recovery to install SuperSU.zip to root the device, after doing this I could receive OTA updates. When I went to install them CWM aborted the update. I booted normally and selected "Clear update data", rebooted and now it always says that the device is up to date despite being on the 5.0.1 factory image.
My question is how can I go about getting OTA updates again? Also, will this involve further tweaking of files which may be risky as I have already messed everything up once.
Thank you.
EDIT: I have only just realised the grammatical error in the title but I can't change it now.
Just for clarification, are you trying to flash/sideload the OTA or are you attempting to use the tablet's built-in updater?
Nvidia pulled the 5.1 update. 5.0.1 is up to date.

You can't get an OTA while rooted .. This is a very basic principle/consequence of rooting. There is no new 5.1 update since it was pulled a few months ago. I'm still waiting for it to get fixed but we might just get M at this rate. Rooting isn't risky if you understand what you are doing and what you shouldn't do. If you are responsible with the "power" of having a rooted device then I wouldn't worry about it.
I am waiting for the ability to flash the new OTA that was pushed on 29th. But yeah cannot pull and download the OTA while rooted.
Good evening, look nere: https://youtu.be/bT82lX40fuc
I just downloaded and installed while rooted with TWRP installed, no problem. I did have to re-flash TWRP and root, but TWRP had no trouble with the auto update.

First let me thank this community for the MANY years of great help pushing my devices to their limits. I've never register or posted because I've ALWAYS been able to find my answers with a simple search and really never have much to add.
This time I can't find a good answer. I hope this isn't too much of an amateur question.....
I purchased my Pixel via Verizon (I know....) and have unlocked the bootloader and rooted.
I really don't want to mess with custom ROM's for a while and I still want the latest stock version. How do I update to the latest version without losing recovery and root? Example: I updated to 7.1.1 the other day, then wiped, unlocked, installed recovery and rooted. I went back to 7.1 and don't know how to update to 7.1.1 again or other future versions. I hear that flashing stock rom from Google will wipe recovery and root. Is that correct?
Thanks again for all the years of sharing your experiences.

use the toolkit to sideload flash the OTA.

Thanks for the reply. Follow up question after scanning the toolkit description..... I'll look deeper into it in a bit.
This will retain root? Will using adb to sideload lose root?
I think so. You can just reflash SuperSU in recovery :good:

That's not possible. If you installed the 7.1.1 update you wouldn't have been able to unlock the bootloader again. So you must have had it unlocked before the update.

I updated, then decided to root so I factory reset which brought me back to 7.1...... I didn't even know it wouldn't work on 7.1.1 so I guess I was lucky to have done so. I just thought it would be safer to start with a clean slate.
It wasn't until I noticed I could no longer double tap to see notifications that I realized that was only in 7.1.1 and noticed that I couldn't update to it anymore.
Edit: Maybe when I said "wiped" I should have said "factory reset".

I figured I could do this as a last resort but would love to side load and just go about my day. Nice to know that there wouldn't be an issue, thanks.
I realize this isn't my thread, but... I flashed factory image to my Pixel but the recovery flashing failed. How can I get stock recovery back on so I can take the update?

Use the skipsoft toolkit and try again with a new factory image download.

There's a section 'Updating instructions' in the OTA page (linked above) with instructions. Not for the faint of heart if you're unfamiliar with ADB.
It's on the toolkit options after you select your device.
Do you mean you booted into recovery and reflashed because I've actually been wondering almost exactly what you have.
I have a VZW pixel that I unlocked and rooted via adb/fastboot and I've been wonder if accepting a Verizon OTA would unroot me, and relock the bootloader. The 2nd Verizon update as we know disabled depixel and grayed out the option in dev options but do current OTA updates (not images I downloaded myself) unroot and relock which would prevent me from unlocking and getting root again
