Im coming from an HTC device where flashing roms and flashing firmware were actually two seperate things due to security.
I was wondering that when you get a custom recovery on the LG G3, and flash a rom, do you have to also update your firmware as you go? Or does the firmware flash alongside the roms?
thanks
If you are referring to bootloaders and radios as firmware, then the rule regarding matching up the ROM to the radio applies as far as stock based ROMs go.

Hey guys, just a quick question, must we always flash the firmware zip file first in bootloader before flashing a custom rom?
I ask this because I had already flashed the latest firmware (3.33.401.6) ages ago, I've been using albinoman887's CM 10.2 rom and Carbon Rom without any problems (well actually, I do have battery issues and 2 small minor issues). But today, I decided to check my firmware version using fastboot command
fastboot getvar version-main
Click to collapse
and I got something like 1.24.401.1.
Well, that's obviously wrong, so I flashed the firmware again and this time it shows the proper version.
So I was just wondering, does doing a full wipe or flashing a new rom affect the firmware at all? Must we flash it everytime prior to flashing a new rom? I don't understand how my firmware was changed even though all I've been doing is switching between JB custom roms.
doesn't affect the firmware at all
i don't know why it showed you that firmware version
flashing any custom rom doesn't affect firmware
there is no need to change it every time you are flashing a new rom
now leave it as it is
I'm on Viper 1.8. I've had my M8 since release.
I want to go to the new release, and I need to update my firmware to do it. The instructions are a big wall of text, but here's what I understand
Flash a stock ROM (Lose root)
Flash a stock recovery (lose custom recovery, DUH)
get HTC's OTA update (closes me off to certain exploits)
Flash custom recovery (Is S-OFF the one and only prerequisite to do this?)
Flash new Viper ROM (Have I missed anything?)
Am I missing anything? I understand that by being stock, I won't be rooted, although that doesn't affect S-OFF. So once I'm stock, because I'm S-OFF, I can still flash a custom recovery, and therefor flash the rooted Venom ROM, right? I know how to use ADB, so I'm not a complete idiot. It's just that things are so different with different phones. I have had motorolas (bootstrapping tools), Samsungs (Odin, etc.)... it's hard to keep up with these different security systems and tools that each manufacturer puts in place.
based on the research I've done, I've found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...m-stock-rooted-vzw-ota-2-21-605-2-wp-t2874699 But because it's already the new update, I'm not getting the new firmware.
I've found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2723159 But I have no god damn clue which one is the one I need. Also, there is potential for bugs and incompatibility by having some but not all of the newest firmware, kernel, radio, ROM, etc.
I have an old nandroid, so I'll have to load it up and pray that it's a stock nandroid.
I'd like to move from LolliGPE to the new stock verizon 5.0.1 rom and firmware. Is there anything I need to watch out for or any particular order? I'm currently still on the 4.4.4 firmware. Thanks
You should probably flash the firmware and radios before you flash any Lollipop Sense ROM
I have a Z3 with stock prerooted firmware and would like to flash my telco's baseband to see if it will fix some issues.
Is this do-able with the flash tool? Is it possible to do this?
Also, are basebands strictly for the version intended?
It's been a while since I last flashed the rom so can't remember the tools.
Noob Question: Yo, guys, If you update the radio using fastboot then you flash a ROM, does it change the version of the radio?
E.G.
I update the radio to "2.0.50.2.30" using fastboot, then I clean/dirty flash Lineage OS (which according to what I've read, it comes with "2.0.50.2.29"). Will it change the version of the radio?
Based on my personal experience, flashing a ROM should not affect the radio version.
Nope it's not. Some of the ROMs coming with no radio/bootloader or outdated version, you should update your radio/bootloader for once then you are good to go.They survives dirty flash.
