Hi,
Has anyone been using the Truecaller function of the new dialer?
I read the TOS and it states that it will only "collect, use and share" your contacts if you Opt-in to use the "Enhanced Search". That's fine, it means you can use Truecaller without giving them all of your contacts. I know that they take your own number, as thats a requirement to use the service.
The problem i'm seeing is that once you turn on the truecaller function that it automatically uploads all you phonebook contacts. Their are no settings for truecaller that i can find; only on or off.
It looks like the app is opting you in without your permission or is just being "clever" and opting you in when you click yes to turn truecaller on.
Has anyone been able to find any of these setting where you can Opt out?
yes I want out too, I deactivated account and unlisted my number and I want my contacts removed too!!

As far as I know/knew, Google Talk was incompatible with transports to other networks (MSN). However, I saw this post
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=73c73792d8500518&hl=en
Which implied to me that it actually was working. Can anyone confirm that it is, and possible give me some tips on how to set it up?
I use a free transport with mine.
use an app like Psi on the desktop, add your google talk account, do a service discovery, enter the server you want to use and attach the transport.
I use MSN and ICQ transports and it works well.
I've got it set up now, thanks! There seems to be a significant delay in contacts changing status (online/offline). I'm guessing that's normal though.
Also, is there a way to get contacts to show up by their MSN nickname, instead of their email address? Some seem to, while others are stuck as an email. Maybe it just takes time for them to change?
I am using an ICQ Transport which is working just fine, no delay (guess that depends on what transport you're using, i'm on headcounter.org ((they've got MSN too)))
You should change the addresses manually (on GTalk) i had to do so too with some of my ICQ contacts as the transport isn't exactly perfect.
I use transports to some IM networks specific for my country: Gadu-Gadu and Tlen. I use them for years and get little issues. It's really nice to have talk history from all networks in one place - accessible from WWW or mobile Gmail app.

I think Jabber doesn't store contacts names on server side - only their IDs. This is client responsibility to name IDs, so even if you name them in one Jabber client, second one won't know these names.
GTalk, on the other hand, uses Google Contacts to store names and other information. If you look into all your contacts, you will see these imported from other IMs, e.g. contact named "[email protected]" with email "[email protected]". Then you could change their names and this should affect names in GTalk app.
But this is somewhat screwed up. First: you get a lot of garbage in your contacts and you can't remove it, because then Gtalk will automatically remove Jabber contacts too. Ofc if you re-add Jabber contacts then Google Contacts will be automatically recreated.
Second: you probably want to merge IM information with already existing contacts. You could move all info from existing contacts to IM ones and then remove first ones, but this is totally stupid. Unfortunately if you will try to do it other way, then GTalk will remove your Jabber contacts ;-)
I have found a trick: you have to disable sync in your phone and modify contacts from Gmail interface. Move IM info to old contacts, remove garbage and then GTalk won't remove Jabber contacts during sync, because it will find them in other contacts.
But there is also some tricky thing. GTalk info must be stored in exactly the same way as in automatically created contacts. AFAIR it must be added as email field of private type. This is totally stupid, because Google Contacts API supports field especially for GTalk information and actually Android use it in some places, but GTalk syncing doesn't. If you add this information as GTalk field, then GTalk will remove Jabber contact or recreate garbage - I don't remember. I have added IM info in both email and GTalk fields to get full functionality.
Ahh and it's possible that Google fixed some of these issues. I was porting my contacts about year ago.

Sorry for the late reply, I sent in my N1 for a replacement, and haven't gotten the new one yet so I've been using my iPhone.
I used jabber.hot-chilli.net which gave me a bit of delay, then headcounter.org as it was recommended above. Headcounter didn't convert emails to nicknames like hot-chilli did (sometimes), so I switched back. Still looking for alternatives.
Edit: Actually, I remember there being a problem after I switched to headcounter.org, causing Talk to force close. Something with how the contact names are parsed, I saw in another thread.
does this work anymore for anyone?
I'm unable to get any services listed when I'm connected to GTalk.
Tested several transport servers but neither are returning any services.
If I connect to an other jabber server services are returned from the same transport servers..
Use Psi to add the transport. Set it up to connect to Google's servers and sign in. When you go to add the transport, manually put in another server. Use jabber.hot-chilli.net, they use an updated Jabber server that parses names correctly so they don't crash Google Talk.
You'll have to authorize each contact once the transport is added, but Google put in an authorization limit per day, so only 40 or so will go through. The rest you'll see with a little red question mark on their status icon. Right click on them and go to authorize and resend the authorization manually. This may take a couple of days depending on how many contacts you have. As they authorize you'll see them show up in Google Talk.
Also, you may want to add their IM address to your actual contacts. Open GMail and find a contact, add a Google Talk IM listing, and put in their_email\[email protected] When you're signed in on your phone you'll see their status next to their name in Messages, Phone, and Contacts. Its handy.
I wrote a blog post on it here: http://chrisbaltzer.com

I know WP7 is all about connecting people and stuff, but why is "formally known as contacts" now merged with "people"?
I have tons of contacts associated with my email address and scrolling through hundreds of contacts just to find my home number is ridiculous.
So my question is:
Is there a way to only display SIM contacts? Not facebook and email contacts..
EDIT.. I gave up, reseted my phone and made my primary email address my google (which i have no contacts on)
Then later added my windows live account..
Microsoft really needs to step their game up

Apparently SIM contacts can be imported but have no idea what about seeing them.
As for scrolling, you have Search button in People so no need to scroll.
You can also select by letter.

Yeah i know what you mean but in almost every letter category there are at least 20-39 contacts, since im using my business email for my phone...
I have imported my contacts and they are right in the mix in the overkill of contacts. Searching for them is meh, but if its the last resort i dont think Windows Phone 7 is for me. I just wanted the ability to slide straight to my contacts on the go without the hassle. Theres no reason my boss should be even there lol
If I understand correctly, you want only the contacts on your SIM to appear, but not contacts from your email accounts and facebook?
Not exactly sure how to show the SIM contacts, or if they show up by default. You could try going to Settings-->Email & Accounts, and clicking on the listed email accounts and unchecking "Contacts" under "Content to Sync". Also, going to Settings--> swype right to applications --> people, you can select to "Only add Facebook info to existing contacts" under "Include Facebook friends as contacts", assuming you haven't tried these steps already. That should prevent the contacts on your email account from being seen on your phone.
As for the SIM contacts, i would assume they show up once they are detected? Maybe someone else could verify, since I don't have any way of checking.
Yeah I know about those settings, I even removed my Facebook account from the phone. But with my windows live account under content to sync it only has "email" as an option. Nothing else.. I also heard that since its the primary email It does everything by default and cannot be removed without a factory reset.. Which i just cannot do :[

Long story short I have to use WhatsApp for communication with one person. I have no other need for it, never had a WhatsApp account and never had Facebook or Instagram account (no need for either).
I will be using it on Android phone - either on my "daily driver" running Android 11 or on my spare phone running Android 9. I also have Windows 10 PC but my understanding WhatsApp still has to be installed on the phone before it can be used on PC.
I really don't like the fact that WhatsApp account has to be associated with the phone number. Does it mean that no more than one WhatsApp account can be associated with specific phone number?
I also want to avoid having all my contacts syphoned and sent to Facebook/Instagram. From what I learned this is a default behavior and if you deny WhatsApp access to contacts the functionality will be restricted.
So my plan is:
Create new Google account
Create new user on my Android phone and set it up with this new Google account. This new user will only have one contact (the person I need to communicate to)
Install WhatsApp under the new user account. At worst my phone number and another person number will be sent to Facebook or Instagram account.
Does it sound like a good plan? Any other things I can do to avoid my information being vacuumed?

A Whatsapp account is tied to phone's SIM-card. AFAIK this can not be bypassed.
I won't let WhatsApp or FB run on any of my devices. Not for anyone.
Lol, this forum is as internet social as I get
That person you "communicate" with has email, right? I've blown people off because they insist on texting vs phone. I find it quit annoying and bothersome for a number of reasons.
Meh, people are trouble...
Hello,
I've tried to fix this problem for months - it makes using my phone as a phone very painful. I've reached out to Google via the app's feedback, have posted multiple Play Store reviews, have posted in the Google Community Support forum but no one will even acknowledge my posts. DRIVING ME INSANE.
I am trying to use the latest Google "Phone" Android dialer app (version 63.0.364655934 - though every single version has always had this same issue). The app was installed via the Play Store. All permissions have been granted. The app is set as the default dialer as well. I can open the app and dial a number, and incoming calls are working fine. The problem I'm experiencing: if I attempt to make a phone call from any other app, the Google "Phone" app is not listed as an installed dialer in the Android call/dialer intent received list of available dialer options. The default (Samsung) dialer is listed, as well as others (such as Skype for example), but not the blue Google "Phone" app. If I am texting someone in the Google "Messages" app and decide I would like to call that contact, when I touch the call icon the "Complete Using" Android dialer selection menu pops up (the one where you can choose which app you would like to use to complete the action, and whether you want to "Always" use that app or "Just Once") but the Google "Phone" app is not an available option, despite having all permissions granted and being set as the default dialer. This is extremely annoying and drives me crazy all day long and makes it very difficult to use my phone. If I ask Google Assistant to call someone, GA attempts to do so and that dialer selection menu pops up and nothing happens/GA cannot place the call because the Google Phone app is not listed as an option. I cannot make calls from the Google "Contacts" app. I cannot make calls whenever I select a phone number from a website in Google Chrome. It is extremely frustrating. I have sent feedback via the app multiple times, have written multiple reviews on the Google Play store and was told by the developer that my phone needed to have a good signal in order to be able to make calls and that I should submit feedback via the app, despite having clearly stated in my review that I had already submitted feedback multiple times. My phone has perfect signal - that has nothing to do with anything...
I believe it is the result of poor coding in the app's Android manifest / intent settings, and/or perhaps it could be that something conflicts with Samsung's proprietary Android software on my phone. My phone is one of the most common phones out there, and was one of the top selling phones last year in the United States: Samsung Galaxy A10e, on Verizon Wireless. Device software up to date, not rooted (because it's not possible for US Samsung devices to be rooted, unfortunately).
When I look at the App's enabled permissions and services, one permission seems to be disabled, and three services are listed as disabled, despite all permissions being granted in the Phone app's app/permission settings in the main Android Settings menu. Screenshots with more details attached.
Please help - thank you!

I'm on Verizon. It's so weird/dumb/annoying! I can't even ask Google Assistant to make a call, or open a contact in the Google Contacts app and then make a call, or click on a contact in the Google Messages app and tap the call icon. All I get is the pop-up menu that shows the disabled/not default Samsung dialer app (green) and Skype Lite, despite all permissions being granted and the Google Phone app being set as the default dialer app. I've tried the beta version as well and it's the same.
I'm constantly having to copy and paste or physically write down numbers because the stupid phone won't function as a phone and Google Support is non-existent and makes me want to chop my head off.

Unfortunately there's no way to uninstall any updates in the Google phone app, only uninstall the entire Google phone app altogether. Nor can I uninstall any updates for the built-in Samsung dialer app and I can't even disable the app as an app. :-(
I honestly think it's either poor coding on Google's behalf, or Samsung's locked-down / proprietary / Touchwiz crap being all finicky and annoying, or a combination of both. It's so dumb that I can't even use the Google Contacts app to dial a phone number or have Google Assistant place a phone call... with the Google dialer app... lol...
I really need to be able to make damn phone calls without having to copy and paste the number every ****inggggy time. This is absurd. Can someone please help or advise? There's no such thing as Google ****ing support. Their forums are pointless.
As the title implies my family and friends who use Android Phones have a contact picture of me that was uploaded automatically from my Google Account.
Not sure how that works (if by e-mail match or by phone number match) but I can check that when a friend saves my contact for the first time it brings the profile picture in my Google Account.
However after I update my profile picture on Google it does not update the picture on my friends phone.
It got stuck on the old profile picture. Sometimes one from many years ago.
I do know that other people could set their on custom contact picture for my number, and this could prevent updates.
But that's not the issue as I've checked these friends and they are not using custom settings.
I do know also that a lot of phones use custom contact apps, and these may treat contact profile pictures different ways, so I limit my question to Google Contacts, as it is the default app for Android OS.
In short, I would like profile pictures to work on Android Contacts as they work on WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.
Some guide questions.
1. Is the Android system or the Google Contacs app programed to set new contact pictures automatically?
2. If yes, from which source?
3. Is there a way to force this source to push updates on third party Google Contacts?
Hope I could explain the issue.
Any thoughts?
Really love this community.
=)
