I have been trying for hours to root a Sprint Galaxy S5 on 4.4.4. I get into download mode and use oden 3.09 to load the NE5 kernel but after I click on file and then AP then find the kernel then hit start nothing happens. There is quite a few different NE5 kernels and so many different ways to use odin I am stumped.
I have attached a pic of what I see in download mode. Can someone tell me if it is correct.
It is a refurbished replacement phone.
Just wondering if you are worried about tripping the Knox counter or not? If not, it's pretty simple.

Don't care about knox.
All you need is to flash a custom recovery in Odin, then flash a superuser zip in recovery, or download cf auto root.
I used cf on my first S5 to gain root. I found a video using cf auto root for the S5 but the comments say it does not work on 4.4.4.
Here are the files I used

Unzip it, use the tar file to get your recovery, then flash the superuser zip. Good to go.
Thanks for the reply. I found a video on how to get into download mode and when I do that it does NOT look like what is in the video. I believe that might be my problem.
When I hold down vol up, power, menu it says recovery booting. then looks like whats in the picture I posted. It says manual mode at the bottom. Is this download mode?
I never even noticed that! Lol. Volume down, instead of up
---------- Post added at 03:34 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:33 PM ----------
Sorry about that, I should have noticed from the pic you posted, lol
My bad I meant I push vol up...power...menu.
You need to hold volume down, down for download mode
---------- Post added at 04:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:04 PM ----------
Volume down, power, home button
That was it.....Holy Crap. Somewhere I read vol up and kept doing that. Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated.
No worries
So I was rooted with pingpongroot for a while. My phone started acting buggy and I decided to factory reset (via the settings menu in android). It failed ("dm-verity verification failed"), so I boneheadedly clicked Wipe data/factory reset in recovery, and immediately realizied what I'd done. So now I'm stuck in recovery with no firmware (I think). I can actually boot the phone but it just loads the setup wizard and I cant get out of that app. Cant even expand notifications or anything.
Can someone please guide me how to load a rom onto my phone?
You will want to download the stock firmware on your pc or you might be able to use Kies recovery to do it also.

Can you tell me, once I get the file on my device, how would I flash it? Would it be in recovery > install from ADB? Or maybe Install from external storage?
Well if you were on pc it would be you connecting your phone to the pc and it would be a simple process of letting it's do its own thing. I'm not sure fimilar with a way for you to flash a stock firmware on your phone. Just for the heck of it try to boot in safe mode, turn off your phone then press and h o ld volume down and the power button until you get a menu of normal boot etc. Go to safe mode and try to boot up and see what happens. I don't think it will help but it's worth a shot maybe you will be able to get somewhere. Otherwise maybe you have a friend that has a laptop or something that is a Windows pc?

On a mac you need Samsung Smart Switch, it will be able to fully restore your phone with the newest Firmware, you could also use the Verizon verizon upgrade assistant. I used the Verizon option and it hung at 66% for 2 1/2 hours, I ended up going to my local best buy, they had a samsung experience center, and they just reflashed it for me for free!

This is a temp root and will be removed every hard boot.
I am not responsible if you break your device!
You have been warned.
Knox is not tripped
Hello All, I Have found a temp root process for those who have the AT&T Tab 4 with the kernel build Thu Aug 13 17:01:34 KST 2015.
Download Tab 4(Temp root), you will have 3 files. Odin 3.07, boot(LP_fix).tar and Kingroot-4.1.apk.
Install KingRoot on your tablet run and click Start Root. After the first time the process of checked for root will take longer as su will still be installed.
You will now have KingUser installed in /system/app/
When uninstalling bloatware, do it in one go.
When you have to reboot, reboot into download mode or you will get the AT&T unauthorized screen.
Use Odin to Flash PDA with the boot(LP_fix).tar, this will wipe the su links so the kernel doesn't see it and will boot. You will reboot automatically back to the launcher and will be able to reboot without using Odin.
Need help furthering permanent root as this is beyond my skills.
Update 1/27/16 14:35
Deleting all knox related apps is safe so far, setting build.prop ro.build.selinux=0 and a soft reboot seems to put kernel in permissive mode. Download a soft reboot app from the play store for reboots.
Don't let you tablet die and you don't have to keep doing this process!
Thanks to CocaFoca for the boot(LP_fix).tar.
Thanks for the dev(s) of KingRoot.
Does it work
Anyone try this yet?

Seems kind of weird no one is commenting on this, wonder if it works
I see this on a few different sites but no comments on any of them. I use my tab for work and can't afford to be Guinea pig and turn tab into hockey puck so have to wait a while I guess. If anyone can confirm that this works let us know please
Seeing as how the author wont even reply its not worth the risk to me
This works just no hard boots. No knox trips either. Still working on recovery methods maybe someone can help upload there build.prop.

Just search soft reboot in play store and it has red arrows in a circle motion. As long as you don't mess with build prop you will be fine.
on your notes on the 27th you put to do.... setting build.prop ro.build.selinux=0...... do I still do that? The last message you sent said as long as I dont mess with build prop I will be fine...

If you know what your doing you can change build.prop, do you need permissive kernel? All it does is disables SElinux for stuff like xsposed which isn't supported yet. Its aimed more to someone who will help farther to permanent root. The build prop is really good for this device.

No custom recovery yet as I was told bootloader is locked, until someone confirms custom recovery works in am staying away as there's no Odin firmware and I need warranty. Yes Odin 3.09 will work but it will remove root really no need unless a hard reboot is needed your your tablet dies. Just keep with soft reboots. As for viper I would stay away soundalive is way better. Stock recovery will not work.
Better than viper4android? I highly doubt that. Don't think that is possible
First, just want to say thanks for sharing this info & zip. It brought my tab back from the dead after i rooted. (initially i was unaware it had a locked bootloader until after i rooted). I just have a cpl questions maybe someone in here can answer.
1. Has anyone tried using Flashify or Root Rashr to flash the boot_LP_fix.tar before powering off? I personally have never used either app so i dont know if either can flash .tar files. I know Mobile Odin would probably work, buy it doesn't support LP. 2. Has anyone installed busbox? 3. Do any of the "Hide Root" type apps function in such a way as to let the tab reboot? Those were just a few questions i had about this. Thanks for any info.

Hide root does not work has to do with the kernel checking for root or sumlinks, busy box installs and works but no idea on flashify.
Thanks. Appreciate the info. Im only looking for a way to safely power down bcuz about 2 or 3 times a week my tab doesnt get plugged I into a charged so it gets shut off. My girlfriends mother & son play with it & use it to stream movies. It would be great if there was a functional equivalent of Mobile Odin Pro so when i was done busing it i vould simply flash the tar. file so it would boot. Maybe ill do a little experimenting & see what happens. Thanks again
Can someone with a rooted SM-T337A do a system dump with these files included modem.bin, NON-HLOS.bin, recovery.img, a cache dump, and the PIT file??? Please
Thanks worked
I think I dun goofed :c. Was working fine, then I had to reboot, flashed the .tar, but I think I was a second late on catching it, because now it doesn't boot :c Hangs on ATT screen. HEEELP :C
Does anyone have a tar file for the t337a?
I am quite frustrated with MM at this point. My wife's phone Sprint S6 had Lollipop on it, and she set up fingerprint unlock. It did not ask for a pin and there was no backup pin/password set up on the phone. The new MM update rolls around and the policy has changed so that it now requires a pin for the fingerprint unlock and it will not use fingerprint authentication after a reboot or 24 hours of not being used. Well her phone went straight to asking for a pin without one ever being set up and refuses to unlock with a fingerprint. Sprint sent us another phone and I have set it up, but so far the old phone is on and I can do anything you can do with a locked phone on the main screen, take pictures or screenshots, open and close the top menu, but I can't sign in to make any changes. The wifi is on, and it connects to my network. I signed into Android Device Manager and can get it to ring, attempt to reset the lock code which does put up another lock screen but it will not let me unlock the phone. Just keeps going back to the pin. She didn't have a Samsung account so I can't use the unlock on the Samsung page. Took it to a Sprint service center and they couldn't do squat of course. It was another center that told me to go to that one for help. Guess that was just a couple hours drive time wasted.
I now have a spreadsheet of pins I have attempted and it's an hour between attempts but I am getting nowhere fast, and feel like I am wasting time. Since the bootloader is locked I can't get Odin to update it to TWRP, and I have downloaded 5.1.1 to try and push it back but that too is locked out when I try Odin. I logged into the bootloader and have tried to Apply Update from ADB, but I can't seem to find an OTA version of 5.1.1 for Sprint SM-G920P. I can find the .tar.md5 version bit Odin will not let me put it on, I am assuming because it isn't letting me go backward.
I did manage to get all of my contacts off the phone because we still hadn't deleted the bluetooth connection to our car, and it pulls all of the contacts to the car when you connect a phone. So I let it connect to the car, pulled the contacts and then used my phone to video as I scrolled through the contacts and expanded the ones that were truncated on the screen.
The only thing I want now would be some of the pictures, and I can't get to those since there's no micro SD card on an S6. So at this point I don't know if this is just a rant or if someone knows if there is anything I can possibly Update through ADB to help me get into my phone? I have a few more days before I have to send it back to Sprint as they called and wanted it already, but I told them they needed to give me more time since someone (Sprint, Google, or Samsung) let this particular scenario slip by before they pushed this update. Having the phone just sitting here beeping with updates and updating software all the while not letting me in is like it's just screwing with me. If it would just allow the fingerprint to unlock this would be done. Anyone have any ideas?

Yes. The file I tried to upload was the stock 5.1.1 (1648503226 Apr 27 18:36 G920PVPU2BOF7_G920PSPT2BOF7_SPR.zip wrong file this is the one I tried with Odin - 3662786727 Jun 12 2015 G920PVPU2BOF7_G920PSPT2BOF7_G920PVPU2BOF7_HOME.tar.md5 ) for the G920P. The phone has always been stock. I get an error with if I recall LRP and it shows the version numbers and will not allow the update to load. Odin fails pretty quickly. If I try and upload the TWRP bootloader it will show it uploading and then fails the write as the bootloader lock is on.
Correct, I can't see the pics, and didn't have USB debugging turned on either, otherwise there was a chance that I could have used adb to do a backup. It was my wifes phone so I didn't mess with it. In hindsight I guess I should have, and will definitely be correcting this on the replacement.

It currently has 6.0.1 on it, and I don't think reloading the same version will help any, since it's the policy of the new MM update to require a pin on a restart, which is what happened here. When the new phone came in it still had 5.1.1 on it, and I went through and verified that setting up fingerprint authentication didn't require a pin. I did turn it back off so we wouldn't get bit by the same issue twice. I also took a screenshot of the 6.0.1 MM update where it mentions the new fingerprint rules. Seems to me they forgot about people who might have set up fingerprint verification and not had a required pin. I have tried over 30 different pins that we can think of, including the last 4 of the phone number, etc. No luck and I am just about to give up.

I will go read that right now. I am almost ready to go to the bootloader and "Wipe Cache Partition" also to see if that will maybe get it to where it let's me attempt to get back in using the gmail account.
Which leads me to a side rant. The gmail account on the phone was set to sync everything and I figured when I logged into the new phone it would all (at least contacts and calendar entries) just re-sync and download. Nope. Nothing. So I entered new contacts into the new phone, made sure sync was set up, and logged into google with the account and nothing had synced up. I had to tell it to sync manually on the PC before it pulled anything from the phone. Make sure and check your google account folks. Make sure it's actually syncing your data and not just saying it is.
Off to read the thread and see how it goes. I will report back.
Yea I noticed that with Google and the syncing learned that a few years back lol but that thread should be able to help and once u put a custom rom u should be good to go

It didn't work. I get "Custom Binary(RECOVERY) Blocked by FRP Lock. And I can't get in to turn on the OEM Unlock. I guess my next step will be deleting the cache from the bootloader and see if that resets something to let me re-try via the google account. I am not going to do the factory reset until I am putting it back in the box, but at this point I don't have much to lose.
But a factory reset would not delete your pics and stuff that might be what u need because that's a bug

I did not know it would keep the data. When I go to the bootloader there is the option "Wipe data/Factory reset". So I just assumed that was the nuke option. Or do I need to google or search here for factory reset? I am also downloading the 6.0.1 stock firmware to attempt to see if it will upload through Odin. This phone gets sent back in a few days so I can't really screw it up and I am not worried about tripping Knox or anything like that. So it's about another 5 hours to dl, as I am on a sloooow connection. Might read up on the factory reset and hit the hay. It's 1:30AM here and I can pick this up tomorrow. Appreciate all of the help and sticking with me.

Let me know how those 2 methods work out for u mate
Am saving the factory reset for a last resort as from what I read it wipes everything and since the S6 has no card to remove... The download didn't complete so I just restarted. Couple of hours to go.
I got the MM update to successfully upload, but as I figured I am in the same position. I even tried swapping out the recovery.img with another from a rooted firmware, but the FRP lock kept it from loading. So now it's just back to trying pin numbers. And I am about up to about the 40th one since I started logging them. I am sure I have duplicated some of the ones we tried earlier, but since there was nothing set initially I am really just wasting my time I guess. So I will keep an eye here and maybe by the end of the week just wipe the device and put it in the mail back to Sprint. Again, thanks for the help.
Officially gave up on it tonight. Sprint is calling and threatening that if we don't send the phone back they will charge us the full amount so times up. Tried well over 40 possible pins, tried flashing a different firmware, tried flashing twrp, even tried cobbling together a firmware package with twrp stuck inside. No dice. You win Samsung/Google/Sprint.
So beware folks, if you are running Lollipop and using fingerprint authentication and don't have a pin set, switch to another type of unlock before it updates to Marshmallow. Or else you could be stuck in the same predicament as I was. I realize it's a possibly rare combo of settings, but I saw someone in the Sprint repair center the same time I was in there with the same problem.
I hope someone can lead me in the right direction. Somehow i have lost the sprint spark boot animation.
And ive been trying to get it back but to no avail it didn't work for me i have all the tar files and ive been through them all . All help will be greatly appreciated.

Change your csc to spr. There are apps that help if u r rooted.

Or reselect it if your already spr

Sorry to be more precise you need to change your preconfig to spr or redo it. It may reset device but i am pretty sure root wont be lost or anything just basically reset without losing everything.

The sure bet way that i know from doing would be root easiest would be autoroot unless kingoroot apk works for note 5 now, and then download the csc select apk https://csc-select.en.uptodown.com/android the app says it may work unrooted so maybe try that first otherwise for sure rooted works and so check the try root method box and itll take you to a screen showing cscs like spr bst xas.. choose spr, phone should reboot and have the animation. Just unroot if u want afterwards if u had to. Unless u havent ever been rooted and dont want to be....but then idk how you wouldve lost the stock animation.

When u try the odin do you check rtn, clear efs and whatever else that other xda forum says? Maybe pain to try again vs this method which is not as long, download apk, autoroot if needed, change csc.
Solved for some reason odin wasnt flashing correctly.
