I'm new here and could use some help. I have a new Mo Droid Ultra running KitKat 4.2. I live the phone for sure. I use Foxfi with my unlimited data plan and love the application for tethering. The other night my phone, on its own, downloaded MO OTA 1.0, the update to KitKat 4.4. I have read that FoxFi will not work with KitKat 4.4, so I have not installed the update. Every 24 hours I defer the install for now. So I am looking for a soluition to assure I can still use FoxFi for wirless tethering.
I was told I could download SunShine 3.0 to resolve the above dilema. However I am new to all this and have no idea what to do after I download Sunshine. What, if any, other steps to I need to perform after the phone achives S-OFF?? Again my goal is to avoid loosing the capabuility to use FoxFi and I will loose that if I currently proceed with the Install of OTA 1.0 on my locked Verizon Ultra.
Thank you in advance for your kindness and patience in providing an answer with speicifc actions/options.

The only version of the toolkit you can manually download is 7.0 and there seems to be no way to get a toolkit greater than that to say support a verizon s3 with android 4.1.2. Now they say you can donate to get auto updates. But in order to get a version of the toolkit that supports my current version you have to donate, but since no other toolkit can do this its not a donation its a requirement so they should say is a sale to get above 7.0 toolkit.
Was all happy to root a phone for the first time oh well.
You could always try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332825
Easy Solution: Don't use toolkits.
Put in the small amount of time it takes to learn the process of manually rooting and unlocking the phone and do it that way.
I have successfully kept root and wifi tethering enabled since the first root exploit on my Droid Maxx and when Sunshine became available I was super excited and used it to unlock my bootloader. I then unrooted, used the OTA update to go to 4.4.4 and was still tethering with EntitlementBypass-v1.2.apk. I don't know what changed but yesterday it just quit working for me. When I try turning the native tethering on now all i get is a message that says "Error". There is no explanation of what the error is. I also tried flashing 21.11.21tether_twrpinstall with the same result. I am willing to use a rom or anything that allows me to wifi tether again, I just want to know that it will work beforehand.
Has anyone in a similar situation (unlocked bootloader on 4.4.4 rooted with TWRP installed) managed to get any wifi tethering to work?
I ended up flashing Snake's Venom 4.4.4 Moto X Port Build #96 for XT1080 and the tether works great. Here's a link to the XDA thread for anyone in a similar situation:

Very nice
I just had the absolute BEST customer experience at a Costco wireless kiosk. Not only was the clerk very knowledgeable and helpful, but he was also completely sympathetic to the whole rooting situation and willing to help me however he could. On the down side, he was not the one pulling the phone from inventory and had no way to tell what software version I would get, but I asked the girl who did pull the box if she'd be willing to look for a barcode that ended in OC3 or OE1 and she was cool about it. Even though she couldn't figure out how to do it, she ended up pulling an OC3 for me anyway! And when I took it back to the kiosk for activation the dude was like "yeah I'll just skip the setup wizard and let you handle that on your own since you'll be rooting it." On top of that, their deal included a $150 costco gift card, waiving the tax paid for the retail price of the phone, a free 2 amp car charger with an extra usb port, and a windshield mount!
So on to my question, I'm sitting here with a virgin OC3 phone, what should I do first? I've been sifting through the info on here for a few weeks, but much of it is compiled in an "as it was happening" kind of fashion - meaning I'm not sure if all the info provided is relative to "what we know now," if that makes sense. I just want to make sure I get the best rooting experience possible - for instance I'm not sure if I should update to OE1 and then root, or if I can even do that, or if I should just root now and forget about it? If I root OC3 (or OE1) is there a patched 5.1.1 image available out there? Anything else I should know or watch out for?
There is currently no root for 5.1.1 and there is no guarantee that there ever will be. The exploit used by PingPong Root was patched and so another exploit has to be found.
I would say, if you value root more, you're stuck on 5.0.2 and to just root it now. If you want the 5.1.1 update more, update it and use it as if root will not be found, that way you won't be disappointed.
Yup sounds good! Is there anything that OE1 brings to the table that I should consider updating for before or after rooting?
And I guess what I was asking about 5.1.1 - I remember being able to update to a more current version through Odin on my S4 - even though the actual OTA for that version patched the root methods. There was a way to get that update without losing root. So there's nothing like that for the S6 yet?

OE2 is as far as you can go. Go ahead and root OC3 and update to OE2 by flashing a OE2 stock rooted rom if you like.
Here are a couple stock rooted roms. Most of the others you need to be on OE2 already before you can flash them.

Thanks! That's exactly what I needed to know.
I simply want to be able to use my native hotspot to tether to a tablet, for free. I looked and didnt find any method to get this to work without rooting. But did I miss something? Do programs like FoxFi and stuff work anymore? or is my only option to root?
I looked at threads about rooting, but they all seem to be outdated, or started a year or so ago.
I have a Sprint Galaxy S5 running 5.0,can somebody link me to an UPDATED how to root thread for my model?
thanks in advance
(i am not a newb, i have a LG phone and samsung tab S both rooted, CM12 on the tablet, and Xposed and hotspot unlocked on the phone. This S5 is my friends that im trying to either get free tether mainly, or root if needed, to get the tether)
This method still works

So basically I never wanted to update my phone but I accidentally pressed Install Now when I was trying to open the messaging app. Now I can't root it anymore or downgrade it. Worst mistake ever for my phone :crying:
So my phone found a new update, but I don't want to update it because I want to look for a updated ROOTED rom that is later than OG7. If anyone has a odin flashable / zip flashable, PLEASE message me. I have a friend that works with android roms, he said that its something to do with the bootloader and it has to be rewritten by hand to make it rootable because of verizons bootloader, and to unlock the bootloader. PingPongRoot doesn't work anymore after the 5.1.1 update. I really hate this update. it slowed my phone down a lot. **** you verizon :crying::crying::crying:
Anyways I need a rooted rom to flash on my phone to make my phone think its signed by Samsung or Verizon and it's a new update. Please help me root my phone. I really got nothing to root it now ;-;

Sorry, it doesn't exist for the Verizon Galaxy S6. The last rooted ROM was OE2.

Have you tried updating to Marshmallow? I'm on CleanROM 1.5 android 5.0.2 OE2, and have been curious of the new android version, but at the same time do not want to lose root. Let me know if Marshmallow is worth losing root. Only advantage I see to root at this point is not having all that damn bloatware I really hate and cannot remove without root. Thanks.

I rather not update it unless
1: A root method is available
2: A rooted rom for Marshmallow is available
Just saying. upgrading to 5.1.1 unintentially (mainly because i was directly going to the messaging app but accidentally pressed install now) made me loose my root access. That's why I'm seeing if there is a rooted rom for that rom or a root method for that room.

From what I understand, it seems verizon is never going to allow it. Just look at Note 4 from verizon, it came out in 2014 and still no sign there will ever be root available for that one either. I'm even considering moving to tmo since there is root on their devices. Good luck.
