This apk here works but you will not get all the latest updates as google now is for jelly bean and voice search wont work
But I'm trying a work round for that.
to install this first make a copy of the google search in system app and place it some where
On you're sdcard then using a root tool delete google search in system app then reboot phone
Before you install this version if you don't it won't work enjoy
Any way to make it work without root?

Unfortunately not you need root to be able to copy and delete the original search apk

Works perfectly, no voice as you said but I'm sure it's fixable, pulled all my settings from my HTC one x jelly bean. Good stuff!

Works really good, no voice like you said but perfectly functional.

Ever use Google maps to navigate? Then receive an important text message, or feel like switching pandora tracks? THen go back to Google Maps only to see you have missed your exit/turn because your GPS was reallocating and getting a lock?
Well i have xD
So I modded it.
Here is what it does,
Once you launch Google Maps, it will lock on your location. Now, if you click a notification, or press the HOME button, you will STILL have a GPS lock. No matter what app you are in, as long as Google Maps is a background process, it will always have your lock.
Now, what if you got to where you are going and want to leave google maps? Just press the BACK button all the way until Google Maps exits, and so will the GPS lock. Simply ey?
To install:
Download attached apk. Get it onto your device, remove all other versions of Google Maps (Whether system or play store installed) then using a file manager, browse to the downloaded apk, and click it to install. Then enjoy
Hope you like it and get as much use out of it as i do! Be sure to hit thanks or better yet donate! I LOVE FOOD!
DOWNLOAD: Google Maps v6.14.3 Background Lock

Search, Research, & Thanks make XDA go 'round. Do your part, don't be a fart.

What is happening when you try to install it? Do you have unknown sources enabled under security?

Try downloading to a desktop, then attaching the APK to a Gmail which you have addressed to yourself. Uninstall your current version of Maps, then open the e-mail you have sent to yourself, and click the attachment. It will download and install, no need for using a file manager. I usually just find this easier, because it is quicker for me than to pull up the directory in File Manager, find the file, install......just a suggestion. That is my super lazy way when I do not feel like enabling Bluetooth or using a USB, plus the added bonus of having a copy of the APK to hand anytime you need it.

They added a signature check. It crashes if signed with my signature. Working on a work around. But yes it will.

Thanks for the quick reply and I would like to put out there that there's a similar thread/mod out that addresses the extra's that comes with maps, I was wondering if you and that developer would combine your work.
Either way great mod, thanks for it and good luck with the work around.

Do we have to keep the GPS on before launching Maps or the app does it for us automatically?

You should always leave GPS on. It's only being used when an app calls for it. So yes it should be on before using the maps.

Don't know what I did. But after running bliss and now cm12 I don't have the OK Google from everywhere. Using Google now launcher and everything. Language set to English. Also don't have the option for contact recognition anymore. Anyone know what's up?
