Moto Display - Not impressed - X Play General

Firstly, let me preface this by saying I've never owned a Moto X phone before, so some of what I'm about to say may not be specific to the Moto X Play's implementation of Moto Display.
When I got my Moto X Play, I was excited to start using the Moto Display feature for displaying notifications. I know a lot of people really like it. Unfortunately, based on what I see on the Play, I can't see me using it regularly.
- The phone is "too" sensitive to motion when figuring out when to trigger Moto Display. Often times, any slight movement will activate it (such as when sitting on the armrest of my living room recliner. Now, if it did this only when notifications were present, I could tolerate it. Otherwise, the screen constantly wakes up briefly for no reason. Obviously, they had to make some concession here as there's no infrared sensors that wold sense a hand wave over the screen to wake it, but this approach just leads to a lot of false activations.
- The screen hardly stays lit up enough to do anything half the time when you DO pick up the phone. Pick up the phone, catch whether the icon shown is just the lock or an actual notification icon, then quickly swipe up before the screen turns off. Now, obviously it may have always been like this, but I have a feeling they may have shortened the screen on time to help compensate for the fact that this phone uses an LCD instead of AMOLED display.
Either way, the combination of both of these things has not led to a good experience for me.

I agree. Moto Display is a great concept but it really needs a few customization options:
a toggle option to have it only turn on the display when there are notifications
an option to set how long it wakes the screen when you move the phone
an option to change the sensitivity (it's just way too sensitive as it is)

Try changing from Moto Display to Ambient Display, it's a variation that I find works better for me YMMV.

There should be an option for the display to turn on when you reach for your phone in the Moto app under actions

The reason that isn't there is because this phone doesn't have the necessary sensor to recognize your hand above the screen.
It's unfortunate but I imagine it was omitted to keep the cost of the phone down.

It's funny, because coming from a Moto X (2013), I feel like the X Play is actually less sensitive! When I'm in the subway or the bus, I usually only to slightly raise it toward me to trigger it. Now I have to put it facedown then face up. I never used the power button on my good ol' 2013, so I actually liked that much sensitivity. I understand the IPS display couldn't handle it without draining the battery - though the X Battery could probably still have one good day of use, though. I'm actually annoyed when it's triggered at night, because instead of only seing the time and a lock, you see the time, a lock and A SUPER UGLY BLACK SCREEN whereas the 2013 screen was virtually invisible in the dark.
The 2013 Moto Display experience was better than the 2015 experience. I'm sad.
One thing I like is that you can pause music and skip tracks via the Moto Display though, whereas you could only open the app on the 2013.

the phone activating itself its the ''breathing'' feature so you can see the time. try android 5 ambient display.

So how's the Gear 2 wake up behavior?

One of the most annoying things of the Gear 1 is the motion to wake up the watch. Is it improved? I watched a bunch of hands on but they all tell the same story. No word about the fact that the display can't be lit all the time and that you have to do some abracadabra to wake the device. Most curious about any improvements in this department.

well you can't have screen all the time due to technology used. AMOLED. if it would be LCD then you could have screen on all the time, but without background light (like in sony smartwatch 2). i already got used to blank screen, and i just turn the screen on/off with a single button.

I know. I'm wondering if they made the watch more sensitive for motions, introduced a new or better wake up motion etc . Definitely want to know more about that.
if samsung did not mention it, then probably it's the same.

That would be a detail for people coming from the Gear1.
If the battery life is better they might have add a more sensitive option.
Btw personally I dont mind to charge the watch every night. Just some routine. I like it even better than checking the battery to see if it needs to be charged again. So if they made the wake up motion more sensitive and could still pump one day out of the battery, it would definitely be a reason for me to upgrade. Otherwise I see no compelling reasons.
I understand what OP is saying. I'm interested to know that answer as well. I actually had to turn motion off because the watch constantly stayed on while driving all day. It would kill my battery. With it off and me pressing the on button as needed, I get at least 3 days of battery life. A better motion sensor could possibly solve this issue.

I noticed having non-TW launcher caused issues with the motion sensor. Using stock had better motion sensor.

what kind of issues did you have? i had none with nova.
I read a hand on today where the reviewer said it does turn on with the flick up of the wrist but that it doesn't turn on right away, like a couple of seconds delay. That isn't good. I want it to be quick like the pebble when you shake the wrist slightly the light comes on. Hopefully they tweak that before it is released....

That's what I want. I move my arm to that wrist up position to much so the watch is almost always on. I wish it had the option to shake the wrist instead so I have better control.
Personally the only good thing about this watch is the motion thing. It works like a good 90-95% of the time. Wake up is excellent on it. However, it goes crazy when your driving.

Droid MINI Owners, please help! ACTIVE DISPLAY Issues

First, if there is already a thread for this I apologize. I sincerely spent a decent amount of time researching this and could not find anything on xda or anywhere.
I previously owned a Droid Maxx. One of my favorite features of the phone was the active display, specifically how if you picked up or moved the phone, the clock and notifications would display.
I just got my Droid Mini because the maxx was just to big for me to use comfortably in one hand. From everything I can see and read, the Droid Mini's active display should work the same as the Maxx, Ultra, and Moto X. However it's performance in that aspect is abysmal.
When I pick up the Mini the screen remains black!
It's extremely frustrating. I can shake the phone, move it in any direction and the screen remains off. Only when I physically press on the glass does the screen usually turn on. I miss the way active display worked with my Maxx to the point that I am considering going back.
So my question to other Mini owners is...
Is my Mini defective? Or is this just how active display works on the Mini?
That's strange. Mine seems much too sensitive and just randomly turns on and unlocks when it's in my pocket.

That is very strange.
I also notice that active notifications on my Mini don't "breathe" like they do on my Maxx.
On my Maxx, if I have a notification, active display will light up every 20 seconds or so to show me, on my Mini the screen stays dark.
Do you have the same experience?

No mine just turns on, and sometimes my pocket turns on whatever background music I have playing. Also, what do you mean by "breathe" ?

What are your settings for Active Display; Is your sleep at night currently active for it? Are all your apps checked in Select apps? Is your Active Display version 1.2.29 (aka up-to-date)? Is your phone update to date on version 4.4.4?

Sleep is turned off, all apps checked. Both my Maxx and mini are running Android 4.4 and active display 1.2.12. I am rooted so not updating to 4.4.4 but it should work fine on 4.4
I did a factory reset on the Mini, no difference.
I don't own a Mini, just a Maxx, but I was pretty sure that the reason why there is a difference is the display technology. The Ultra and Maxx have AMOLED displays that have no backlight - illumination is from the individual subpixels - so turning on only a few pixels periodically ("breathing") takes extremely minimal battery. The Mini has an LCD display with a full backlight - if the display is illuminated, the entire display is backlit, which takes a lot more power compared with the AMOLED display.
So, as far as I know, the Mini does not "breathe" and uses the LED notification light instead. However, if yours is not coming on even when moving it - it sounds like something is wrong.
See this YouTube video looking at the differences between the Mini (LCD) and the Moto X (AMOLED). Notice that nudging the Mini is supposed to turn on the Active Display notification: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWZUy_arQf0

I had a problem with a rom port that active display did not work and I instead just installed Dynamic Notification from the market. You can set it up just like active display and it has more options,,,even set up proximity sensors to activate as well as movement.

Exit Review

I'm returning my t-mobile V10, and just wanted to put some various ramblings and personal opinions here for anyone who's considering this phone. If you already have the phone and you like it, carry on. It's a pretty good phone, all around.
I was coming from a note 3, so I really wanted to keep the 5.7" screen. When it's in immersive mode, it's great, but one thing I didn't account for is that because it has no hardware home/menu/back buttons, the navigation bar takes up some of the screen size. The screen quality seemed fine, and the auto brightness was really quite good. Other than showing pictures to someone, I never found myself needing to take it off auto and increase the brightness.
The second screen seems like a really good idea. Unfortunately, due to a couple of issues, I found myself turning my phone on/unlocking anyway and wishing it had a notification LED instead. The second screen seems to shut itself off after it's been in your pocket/the dark a few minutes, and doesn't turn back on until you push the power button. At least on my unit, there's a lot of light bleeding (not confined to the second screen rectangle) that was disturbing. It's great being able to see graphics on the second screen, which is about twice the size of the notification bar, meaning you can see contact pictures when someone texts you instead of just their name, etc. The brightness on the second screen is far too low, and it doesn't appear to be adjustable (though when the device is on, the brightness is linked to the main screen's brightness, and looks good). Straight on, it's readable but from any kind of angle, the brightness wasn't enough to keep it readable and provide at-a-glance look at the date/time and waiting notifications. I understand part of the idea is lower battery consumption, but again, I found myself turning my phone on and unlocking it rather than trying to make out what was on the second screen.
It seems to be plenty fast, I didn't try any high-end games on it but it appeared to have no problem with me using it while it auto-updated 5-6 apps at a time, which was a very pleasant surprise. The UI is great, but it's not really laid out like i'd prefer, but I didn't get the feeling that the UI was slowing me down. Overall, the UI is a lot better than I thought it would be.
Battery life was mediocre. I probably would have bought the zerolemon extended battery, but it was out of stock at the time. The fast charging was great, but I had a small amount of anxiety about where my next charge would be coming from.
The camera seemed to take great pictures, but i'm not a photographer nor do I pretend to be.
I didn't notice any changes in cell signal between my note 3 and the V10, but I was told the V10 had something significant to pickup the signal better. I didn't notice it in 2G or 4G/LTE, but didn't really encounter 3G. Having said that, it wasn't terrible, just not an improvement.
The speaker was nice and loud for both music and calls.
I didn't even attempt to deal with the bloatware, rooted immedaitely and I tried cm12 but the second screen didn't work (without a notification LED, the second screen working is a big deal for me), and settled on the deodex/debloated rom. Now that i'm returning it, being able to flash it back to stock and relock the bootloader is awesome.
I hope this was helpful to anyone looking at this device.
Why return such an awesome device?

[Q] Does the S7 have an active display setting similar to the Moto X?

I've just got my S7 Edge and I'm trying to work out if it has an active display feature, like the Moto X, where you can wave your hand over the display to turn a notification portion of the screen on, which displays the time and any emails or messages you've received?
All I've found so far is the Always on Display, but I don't really want to use this as i'm fearful it'll run the battery down unnecessarily and create screen burn.
no.
Try always on. The screen burn isnt an issue. The battery .. it uses a bit , not much really but its up to you to decide whether its worth it.
The theory is that it uses less than not having it on since you dont have to keep waking the phone to check time etc.
The practice is probably a bit different especially if it disables doze.
Try and see.

Should i worry about screen burn-in on my Oneplus 7 Pro?

Hello, I've recently purchased a Oneplus 7 Pro and noticed it was using an OLED panel, the problem is that Burn-ins scare me a whole lot, as such, I have been wondering how others have been using their phones. I've tried using Google, but have found nothing truly satisfactory and as such, I have compilled a few questions i had about the display.
- Is screen burn-in still a real issue? and should I avoid using the phone over long periods of time?
- Do "True black" wallpapers help with this issue? what about dark gray? and a bright wallpaper?
- Do both the static navigation bar and status bar have issues? Same with the AOD, does the fingerprint icon cause issues?
- Should I take extra steps to prevent burn-in? (If so, please say which ones, eg. Any practices you have to prevent screen burn-ins)
(On a side note, does anyone approximatly know how long [in general] an OLED panel at medium brightness and daily moderate to heavy use has before it shows signs of burn-in?)
I'm sorry if this has already been addressed, but i have searched through the forums and have found nothing.
Thanks a lot!

I don't even think about it.
I share the same concerns.
The last OLED phone I had was a Galaxy Nexus and I told myself I'd never get an OLED screen again after that nightmare.
Dealing with the OLED issues has been better with improvements in the technology and overall quality control.
Android OS also has some changes that help prevent burn in. For example the navigation bar and status bar change colors based on the app.
With AOD I know Samsung for example slowly moves the elements around so it doesn't burn in. You can enable the Oneplus AOD with root but Always on Display isn't the same as the Ambient Display on stock Oneplus. Ambient display doesn't stay on screen long enough to really cause any burn in.
Best practices are to avoid high brightness, stay at half or less. If you have a game HUD or other static elements on screen for extended periods of time, rotate the phone when in landscape so it is less likely to burn in.
I'm not an expert on this so i'd like to hear others responses too. This is a more expensive flagship phone so I want to use it for games but avoid the burn in.
I've already read some reports of burn-in on Oneplus Chinese board. The culprits seem to be some Tencent games and its video streaming service. All have very high contrast UI elements, and users tend to turn the brightness very high.
This was the case with my plasma TV. Civ4 left some nasty burn-in in the first year but after so many years of heavy PC usage those remain the only true burn-ins on the TV. It depends on the app. Are there some ways to measure contrast of onscreen elements? In addition to phones I need to replace my plasma with OLED in the coming years.
I got burn in on my OnePlus 3 bc I keep it in my car and use it for a music player, there were times I left it on overnight on a static image multiple times, so if u plan keeping ur phone on all the time on a certain image then u don't have anything to worry about.
I used the Galaxy S3, Oneplus 3, Oneplus 5T all with OLEDs. No burn in. Never. Of course if you are and extrem case and you leave the screen static on for a lot of hours on several days there MIGHT be the risk. But with normal to "normal" heavy usage you shouldnt really be concerned.

Better u only turn it on for a few seconds, be carefull after 10 sec it gets critical..
Just don't leave the screen on at max brightness for long periods of time and you'll avoid burn in.
Because the pixels are self-illuminating and will eventually wear out/start dimming in an OLED display over time, this will probably be a concern with any phone that has such a display.
I had burn-in with my OnePlus 3T starting after a little over a year of use. I had my 6T for about 7 months and hadn't noticed any problems with it by that point.
I think the biggest culprit in long-term use is the notifications area of the status bar, unfortunately. The notification icons usually directly contrast with whatever is on the screen at the time, which ends up causing the pixels to wear out at different rates. While the burn-in on my 3T wasn't defined or crisp, there was a noticeable brightness difference where the icons usually display, and it was apparent any time there was a solid color in that area of the screen.
https://www.cnet.com/news/oled-screen-burn-in-what-you-need-to-know/
To fight this, keep up to date with swiping away notifications, and use gesture controls in OOS instead of the navigation bar.
Use Auto brightness and enjoy the phone...
Honestly, I would be concerned. I have noticed screen burn on my 7 Pro already. My specific case is that I use Waze while driving, and on long (> 1 hour) drives I get the UI lightly burned in. After I noticed it, I alternate the phone orientation 180 degrees to minimize its effects. I also have the "Colors" screen saver activate whenever plugged in, which has noticeably reduced & corrected the issue. Just be aware and adjust the phone orientation regularly and you should not see anything burn in.
My Galaxy S4 and 1+ 3T both had burn in, but after several years of use. (Same app was the culprit.) I think the reason it happened on my 7 Pro faster is because of the higher brightness and 90Hz refresh rate. Once I kicked it down to 60Hz it does not happen near as often .

Do you have your screen turned to full brightness when using waze? I keep mine at about 40-50% brightness. I use maps for 2-3 hours a day 4 or 5 days a week and I have had my 7 Pro since launch and I have zero burn in. I have never had burn in going back to my note 3 days either. I/m actually looking at my OP6 right now as well and no burn in there either (bought that on launch day as well). I also activated forced 90hz all apps on my 7Pro as well and nothing yet. I'm guessing it's your screen brightness that is doing it. Nothing else makes any sense.
Tmobile demo both phone in my store have burn in.... But also does the note 9 and a few others.
Those have the same image on the screen 90% of the time and the screens are set to max brightness to show off the display. All AMOLED displays will burn in if you test your phone the same. When I use maps, I turn off auto brightness and just set it bright enough to see the screen which usually is about 40% brightness. I also change my wallpaper like once a week as well
Had burn in on both 6p and s9 and all in status bar and navigation bar. Now I've installed system tuner and switched on full immersive mode. You need to be rooted though. Using battery widget to look at battery life.

When using google maps or waze on long trips, keep the screen off till the next turn. That's what i do. I NEVER keep the screen on long enough with a static image. I don't think there is any tech that will not give a burn in with a static image over long periods of time. I will still pick OLED over LCD any day.

Everyone should just have a spare lcd phone for navigation. I use an iphone 6s for navigation in my card. Tether data from my phone and dont have tk worry about burn in
I use mine for navigation ,i drive a convertible so the screen is always on high brightness.
Never had any issues with my galaxy s8 which i had for over a year and used it the same way. Poor thing had the maps on more than anything else.i broke the display before the any burn ins.
The display should not have any burn ins even after prolonged use.
However you might want to keep it at 90%max brightness.
I make the most of my oneplus 7 pro so if i notice any burn ins i'll just return it to warranty. I don't care ,i use the phone however i want to.
Also the colors are going to be visibly washed out after a few years of use compared to when it was new, that's why i always insure my phones and just get a brand new one before my contract expires.
In order to avoid getting burn-in you have to:
1. Avoid displaying images with static contents for more than one hour at a time. Many people get their keyboard burnt in because they text obsessively.
2. Avoid using a higher brightness than you need.
3. Maybe use the gesture based navigation.
