Hey guys
I screwed up my vold.fstab trying to get "_ExternalSD" back.
Unfortunately! I did not run a nandroid before I made the change.
Now, I can dirty flash my rom on top, or go back to a nandroid from a few days ago, but I'd really just like to recover and go on my merry way. And maybe learn something in the process.
Only thing is, I can't figure out how to access the phone other than the External SD card through CWM.
Can I mount the internal /system and access through USB? Is there some facility to copy a file from one point to another? Any other methods? I guess the phone has to be up to run ADB, right?
I don't know how to generate a flashable zip but I could extract the original version of the file from the original rom. I assume that its non trivial to create a flashable zip, but maybe someone can comment? It looks like there is signing and certificates involved..
thanks for any ideas

this is why i hate it when people make those guides.
messing with the vold.fstab is dangerous (even though its only a few lines) if your trying to recover your data, give up. its not going to happen. (sorry)
when you edit the vold.fstab it messed up the partitions on your internal SD card and most likely did the equivalent of wiped your /system partition. (or another important one.) your actually lucky it did not completely brick your phone.
your post was a little vague, but if you can, just restore an older nandroid, or wipe everything and install another ROM. (you can try dirty flashing but i dont think itll work)
if you cannot access CWM, then follow the steps in This guide. it should get you back up on your feet. after you follow that guide flash a gingerbread ROM (any gingerbread rom will do fine) then you can reboot and flash any ROM you want. (it needs this to fix a quirk in that script)
Hope you get it fixed
EDIT: re read your post, if your feeling adventurous and want to give it a shot, boot into CWM and connect it via usb. you can now get into an ADB shell on your phone by typing 'adb shell' if you have adb all setup and working. (im working from memory here so dont quote me on any of this)
now, you should be able to access your /system folder from that shell. be very careful though, i dont have much experience right here, and if i remember correctly you might not be in the full root directory yet)
if you can get into it try replacing your vold.fstab with a stock one,
if you dont have a stock one lying around, make a nandroid of the current state of the rom, then flash another rom, pull the vold.fstab, then re-restore back to the broken one and restore it (id upload mine but my phone is OOC right now )
after that just reboot and hope it resolves itself, if not then just follow my advice above
and keep that guide i linked to handy, messing around in CWM has the ability to brick your phone, if it does, then just follow that guide.

re read your post and updated my last post right after you posted
after dealing with noobies all day, i forget sometimes people want to try big things
Thanks guys. The info I was missing was there's no special trick to attaching adb while in CWM! Just plug in!
My phone is back up and running and partitions are fine as far as I can see after just booting up.
Hi there! I messed up with the vold.fstab filfe on my tablet – I replaced it with a downloaded file with the intention to transfer apps to my external SD card.
Now my tablet is only showing the startup logo and won’t continue loading. I can access recovery mode. Now I want to restore the original vold.fstab file.
My questions:
1. Using the Android SDK, the file explorer does not show any files, though my tablet is recognized.
2. Using adb push, it yields an error: permission denied, how to successfully push the original vold.fstab and replace the existing vold.fstab?
3. If I dump an image of my tablet and edit the dumped image, would this be easier compared to the steps above?
Thanks!

You need to do an adb remount before you can push. Was it rooted before?

Mansa_noob, yes, my tablet is rooted. I followed some instructions about adb but had an error saying access denied, and also no files are displayed at file explorer. See my posts above. I also mounted it successfully. I will post some sreenshots later.
Please if you have some instructions, I am willing to try.

Hi twitchyEye, it did not work. It attemps to install (using the install update from ext sd card) but then says installation aborted.
Any more suggestions? Thanks
What recovery are you using? I suck with adb so I got nothing on that front.
It was the stock recovery from my Tablet. I don't have it on hand right now, I will post later. The chipset is RK3066. My problem is my tablet has no official support on the internet (maybe becaue it's still new). Model is Skyworth S71(3G).
I see. Yeah this is over my head man. I thought for sure you were running a custom recovery and it was an easy answer. I'm actually struggling right now with adb myself with a similar issue something about permissions whenever I try to do anything to my phone. So I guess right now would be a perfect time for somebody to chime in with a smarter answer!

I am sure it is rooted, because I downloaded an application from Google play to check it it is rooted or not. It is really rooted. I alvo confirmed this as I can now fully backup and restore my apps using Titanium backup before the tablet is messed up.

I want to try, but the stock recovery is my last hold as I have no stock ROM. If I overwrite the stock ROM, I cannot reinstall it as I don't have a copy of it.
So why not flash cwm with nvflash and then make a backup of your current stock rom? I did exactly that.

For those who have been living under a rock, problematic leaked builds of ICS were released for several different Samsung devices a few months ago. Users of those Devices for instance soon discovered that their devices were being ffected by what came to be known as the MMC_CAP_ERASE bug. Shortly after this*occurred, XDA Senior Member hg42 came up with a way to revive downed devices.
Now thanks to some more ingeniuty on his part, hg42 has also developed a companion application known as Partition Scanner to assist in this process.*The application features:
emmc_scan_all_partitions_once.zip
emmc_scan_all_partitions_infinitely.zip
these allow fast scanning of all blocks of all emmc partitions in 1MiB steps.
The main purpose is to access each emmc block to find any bricked block in the partitions after repartitioning.
The “infinitely” variant runs checks infinitely, which may help to find emmc brick effects which only occur sporadically (if such effect really exists). Run this as long as you want. Reboot to finish.
If this freezes the last partition shown may have a bricked block inside.
emmc_find_brick_start.zip
emmc_find_brick_end.zip
these scan the whole emmc device.
emmc_find_brick_start starts scanning from the beginning of the device upward.
emmc_find_brick_end searches the end of the device and then scans downward.
If this runs up to the end or down to zero (showing a message with “completed –> OK”), no bricked block was found.
If it freezes, the block shown last with “…” at end of line is the first bricked block in that direction.
The line before with “-> ok” is the first usable block before/after the brick.
The application has received excellent reviews, so if you’re one of those people currently facing an EMMC issue, or you had the issue previously and gave up on your device, head on over to the companion thread and give this a go.

@Bad2hold - have you tried this yourself as I am desperate for help in unbricking my device that Samsung refuse to repair as it is the P-6200L (non-UK model).
I can't use ADB as my pc won't recognise the Tab, have tried flashing the .pit file and firmware but no joy, can't use the partition scanner as I can't get it to scan the internal memory (it scans the external SD card instead).
I can install CWM recovery and also get to stock recovery but the Tab will not go past the white Galaxy Tab logo.
Any help is highly appreciated
There is good chance you can recover. try multiple factory resets. flash earlirst odin package, preferrably with a boot.bin, after flash, and stuck on logo, boot to recovery and factory reset. try wiping a few more times if it is still stuck. i usually have to do this when going back to stock. one time i had to wipe from custom recovery, and a combonation of other things..
If you have recovery, youre lucky.
If you give up, you can for JTAG, normally for hard bricks. mobiltechvideos.com saved me from hardbrick.
Id play around a bit before I send to JTAG.
best of luck..

Thanks for the advice mate.
Am going to flash it with the honeycomb firmware it came with from Sammobile and try a few factory resets to see if that works.
If not have found a place in the UK that will JTAG it for £38 if all else fails...:good:
UPDATE: Honeycomb doesn't let me access recovery so no way to wipe from there. Recovery is available on an ICS rom but am reluctant wipe in stock recovery as that's how I go in this mess to begin with :crying:
I currently cant help, as iam travelling without a pc... but this guy who developed this scanner, has pit files available for our device. So there is a good chance to get help from him. And iam sure, with some hours off every week, where u get bored, u can actually fix it by yourself as u already figured out that much... i would love to help, its a challange you know? maybe iam gonna buy a laptop... =p
Update: just curious, is it scanning without a external sd inserted? Because internal and sd are swapped in cwm recovery since 3 versions too...

@Bad2hold - Thanks for the reply, have tried flashing the .pit file but no joy.
Can't get the scanner to scan internal card as it's loaded on my external sd and can't push it to the internal which then means I can't remove the external sd.
Have tried flashing various honeycomb and ICS firmwares with a combination of .pit files, the process flashed fine without errors but still no boot past the white Samsung writing

do I use it if my device got bricked (fortunately it s not the case), or do I use it to remove the brick bug risk from my device?

I think we cannot remove the brickbug on stock ICS...that pit file just for solving hardbrick issue...
Sent from my GT-P6200 using xda premium
U can actually remove the brick bug issue, this is, what this post is about.
Basically, you just have to find the bad blocks in your sd partition.
After you found them, all is left, is to repartition your sd around the bricked blocks, which you have to delete from your partition.
He mentions several methods to use adb and other tools, helping to do this.
And i really recommend reading a bit through his first post, found the same problem after a minute:
I also had the following problem:
I couldn't format my internal sdcard with the cm9 recovery. I think it's too big for the mkfs.vfat tool of current cm9. So I installed another recovery, formatted the internal sd (I thought).
This erased all my current backups and downloads, because in reality it was my external sd. Fortunately I had a backup of the external sdcard from before rescuing my phone.
So, you may want to create a backup of your external sdcard first.
Then double check which is your internal sdcard (the UMS partition) and which is your external sdcard.
Or you could remove the external sd completely. But think about when to remove it, because you might need it for some files (e.g. to use the emmc partition scanner).

Of course, if u r not familiar with linux, u probably wont fix it in an hour.
But you can learn a lot within an hour. First of all, figure out how to connect your device to adb. (Which is still possible, if you didnt smash your tab against the wall or so...) After that, it should be lot easier to follow his instructions.(not just because u have adb working, but because you know what he is actually talking about.)
And he is really willing to help, so figure out as much as possible after connected to adb and just ask in his post if you get stuck.
Dont forget: if its not a issue by malfunctioning/broken hardware, then you actually can fix everything with your pc, you just need to know how.. so dont give up!!!
here his post again: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667886
And @kersey: what pit file did u flash? The pits he provides are to repartition your SD AFTER you located the bricked blocks. But you cant know, if you cant get his scanner running..? You have to format data partition in recovery after flashing one of those, because of missing file system.
Note: Never flash a stock ICS after you fixed it. It will brick your device again. But u r safe with cm9 and others.

It was pretty simple to revive it with hg42's help.
The first thing you need to do is ensure you have CWM recovery, as the scanning tools only work with that.
Download hg42 emmc partition scanner from the link on the first page of this topic and copy to all 5 zip files to your external sd card. You will also need to download hg42's patched .pit file for your model of tab.
Boot into CWM recovery and flash emmc_find_brick_start.zip. This will scan you tab and will freeze on a bad block. Make a note of the number it freezes on.
Now flash the emmc_find_brick_end.zip file and once again make a note of the number the tab freezes on.
You now need to select the patched .pit file that falls within the range of brick start and brick end. e.g. my brick_start was 1074 and brick_end was 2147 so the patched .pit file I flashed with Odin was "P6200_tabplus--patched--brick-between-281-and-2160-MB--FACTORYFS-moved-by-1792-MiB"
I once again entered CWM recovery and did a scan using emmc_scan_all_partitions_once.zip. Which verified there were no errors.
I then booted up the Tab and hey presto it was alive again.
Feeling brave I then flashed the latest Austrian 4.0.4 firmware followed by permanent CWM recovery making sure that I can never do a factory reset using stock recovery which cause the brick to begin with.
Hope the above makes sense to those who need it, I'm sure as you go through the processes above it will.
I'd also like to encourage anyone who uses hg42's emmc tools to offer a donation as without him I would have had a very expensive paperweight or would have had to pay to get it JTAG'd
Happy Boy
Hi all
While trying to root and install custom rom I bricked my friends phone. I have been going crazy trying everything I could to get this brick back to life.
ITS ALIVE AGAIN!!!!!!!!
Thank you kersey for your post on how you got your Tab back.
This is what I did.
I installed the 5 files on the SD card.
120824-151927-emmc_find_brick_end
120824-151927-emmc_find_brick_start
120824-151927-emmc_scan_all_partitions_infinitely
120824-151927-emmc_scan_all_partitions_once
120824-220105-emmc_scan_write
I put the phone into recovery mode and ran 120824-151927-emmc_find_brick_start.
The program started scanning the memory and first froze on 2188.
I got back into recovery and ran 120824-151927-emmc_find_brick_end
once again the program started counting down and froze about 3189.
For this phone the correct pit files were in " pits-N7000_16GB "
I unzipped pits-N7000_16GB and looked for the nearest pit file , which was
N7000_16GB_Q1_20110914--patched--brick-between-1174-and-3321-MB--DATAFS-moved-by-2048-MiB.pit
I then put the phone back into download mode and using Odin flashed the patched pit file above.
Disconnecting the phone from computer I went back into recovery and ran120824-151927-emmc_scan_all_partitions_once
For the first time I was able to do a full scan without the program freezing.
Next step was installing Abyss Kernel 4.2. I then did the regular data wipe/cache wipe/dalvik wipe.
And finally I installed Rocketrom 11.
The phone rebooted and then came back to life.
I checked the internal memory and it was down to 9gb, but who cares as long as its ALIVE AGAIN !!!!
hg42 you sir are an absolute legend. Donation coming your way.
This method definitely works . Just be patient. I hope This helps others aswell
EDIT:
Is there any not so hard way to install the original rom with the pit i need? cm10 works, but i dont like it so much.
p6201dbtlpc_p6201xxlpc_p6201xxlp3_home.tar i would like to use
but i only know to flash this in odin, becouse it is no zip, i have no clue how to flash it in cwm
thanks for an answer!

so my question is after i have installed ics and will not root or use cwm ,will i still have to worry about the emmc bug and if yes
is it best just to go back to honeycomb
btw all is running well on ics just worried about bricking
thank you in advance

If you chose to do a factory restore via stock recovery, which is what you have due to not being rooted and not having CWM installed there is a very big chance you may brick your device. I speak from experience!!!
If you are that worried I would flash back to honeycomb rather than risking having an expensive paperweight

You guys can follow this guide I wrote for the Galaxy Tab 7.7 (which also suffers from mmc_cap_erase) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1862294
Just replace the partition numbers with the ones parted shows you.
The problem is, either way you followed, after being revived your tab will :
- rebrick everytime you flash anything
- Have less than 1gb of internal storage
- Hang everytime you want to download an app or whatever
To fix the last 2 problems, you need to make an ext2sd script to swap your internal-sd and external-sd.
To do so, go to /dev/block/vold : you'll see two files named with numbers (i.e : 22:48 179:48), note the name of those 2 files (one of them is your external-sd mount point)
Then replace the "xxx:xx" in the following script with the name of the first file :
Code:
mount -t vfat -o umask=0000 /dev/block/vold/xxx:xx /storage/sdcard0
mount -o bind /data/media /storage/sdcard1
Save this script in a file called ext2sd1.sh and use Script Manager to run it "as root" and "at boot", now reboot and go to settings/storage : if the first file was your extsd mount point your internal and external storage should now be swapped (i.e : if you have a 64gb external sdcard the settings will show : internal storage : 64gb, and you can actually install 64gb of apps).
If it didn't work, replace the xxx:xx in the script with the name of the second file, then it should work.
Good luck guys, this superbrick is a damn pain in the ass, we can thank sammy for it

Good luck guys, this superbrick is a damn pain in the ass, we can thank sammy for it

followed this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439 yesterday to root my samsung galaxy s3 and unlock the bootloader, but i am unsure if it worked 100%. i know it is rooted because i dl'ed titanium backup and it works, but how do i tell if my bootloader is unlocked or not? did a search, couldn't find an answer, so i am asking here.
There's not really a concrete way to tell however if you reboot and the Samsung logo flashes by in a second then you're unlocked. Typically it sits for three to five seconds on this screen but once unlocked, this screen just flashes by.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
considering we all use the same unlocked aboot.img, it's pretty easy to concretely verify that you're bootloader is unlocked.
but im too stupid to write a script, and no one wants to do it because it's a bit longer than timing the samsung boot logo (which when you compare time-invested to information given, is pretty reliable)
basically involves comparing the md5 of the aboot.img of your phone to the known unlocked aboot.img (will try to find the terminal/adb shell commandsi posted before)
found it:
The unlocked md5 is: 0ba9ad45fc15cf3d62af7dd363686b3f
So if you pull a copy of your current aboot partition and save it to your sd card.
Run the following in ADB shell or terminal. Make sure you run it as superuser:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5 of=/storage/sdcard0/aboot.img
That command will save an aboot.img to your internal sd. Check it's md5 and see if it matches.
Can run in adb:
md5 /storage/sdcard0/aboot.img
or
use any of the many md5 checking apps out there

ok, cool, thanks! so it looks like the root took, but the bootloader didn't unlock. the samsung logo took 3 seconds to pass by. so what do i need to do now to unlock it? should i repeat the steps from what i did yesterday?

I'm gonna bookmark this cuz this is a really good explanation. I don't ever suggest dd methods (nor memorize them) cuz I know a single typo could brick the device.

Just sideload EZ Unlock v1.2 and press the unlock button. You'll hear an audio confirmation and boom, unlocked.
ok, so now i am confused. i have the correct supersu+bootloader on the sd card, and the supersu app on the phone, but the samsung logo still takes a while to disappear.
edit: nevermind, got it working, samsung logo now just flashes by. thanks again for all your help!

Yep, it's pretty straightforward. I tested my unlocked bootloader with this. Haven't had a chance to tested while locked though (will have to wait till my next odin to stock).
But yeah, as long as no one switches the "if" and the "of" it should be safe (aka accidentally pasting something into the normally inaccessible partition rather than copying out to the sd)

Great! Just so you know, you can uninstall EZ Unlock (if you installed it that is) and never use it again. You will not need it again unless you do the following which which will re-lock your bootloader:
1) take a Verizon OTA
2) Odin flash a stock image
Make sure to do a nandroid and happy flashing!

still learning all about this, i will have to search what a nandroid is. i am doing a backup currently using titanium backup (free version right now), and it seems to be working well.
i want to flash either the cm 10.1 or jellybeans v.15 i think, just gotta read more about them.

Ahh, you'll see a lot of terms thrown around like that haha here's a glossary of common terms taken from DroidStyle's guide in the dev section.
Basically a nandroid is a complete system or rom backup akin to a computer backup. You perform a nandroid in custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) however its labeled as "Backup" in both recoveries. "Nandroid" is just the common name for it. The reason you perform a nandroid is to have a safe point to restore your phone to if you flash a rom, kernel, or mod and your phone begins to misbehave. Before flashing your first rom, it's highly recommended that you perform a nandroid in your custom recovery and even save a copy on a computer so you always have that in two places. It may take about 1.5-2 GB's of space per backup so I wouldn't keep too many on your phone at a time.

Perform both actually. Backup apps with TB so when you flash a rom you can restore apps at once if you actually like the rom. I typically restore a few apps when trying new roms then if I like the rom, I'll restore more apps. Backup with CWM so that in case you dislike the rom you flash, you can completely restore to your previous rom. They serve two similar functions yet distinctly different as well.

awesome, thank you for the help. doing the nandroid backup right now through cwm, backing it up to the external sd card so i can then save it to the computer.
so i should only use the tb to back up the apps? oops, i backed everything up on it, was wondering why it took so damn long!

No problem! Yea, TB is useful for a lot once you have a grasp of the basic functions. Only backup user apps and do not backup/restore system apps. Depending on the number of apps and their storage size, backup time varies. You can always delete the previous TB backup files cuz its stored in the Titanium Backup folder of your internal or external sdcard. Doesn't hurt to copy that to a computer every once in awhile too.

After I type this a copy of aboot.img will be saved to my external memory card and from there I can match it up with the unlocked md5 and if it matches this garuntees that my bootloader is unlocked. Is this correct?
I'm a noob, please forgive me.

You don't need to view it. You just need to run the file through a md5 checksum app or check the md5 with terminal or adb using the command I posted earlier
Hi, I have a t959v and I have been trying to restore my IMEI (that's because I was able to backup my /efs partition).
However, after I flash CM 10.1 for my device, my IMEI is gone, or has turned to 0000000.... or has turned to ASCII characters that I couldn't even read. I tried restoring my nv_data.bin file, done everything I could(googled and tried so many posts, I've lost count already.) and ended up with still, a corrupted/missing IMEI. Well after tinkering with my device, I've found out that the reason why my nv_data.bin (5.2 Mb) corrupts as I transfer it to the /efs partition--it's because my /efs partition is a little bit small, that's why my nv_data.bin ends up in an incompleted transfer state(corrupted file). From 5.2Mb, it falls to around 3-4Mb. No, it's not compressed or anything, it's cut-off, or "cropped" if it's the right term(which I doubt). Now, the my question is, is it possible to resize or grow my /efs partition? If yes, then how? First of all, thanks for spending some time in reading my post. Now, could anybody help me? or if it's such a pain to do, is there an alternative to CM 10.1 that has minimal glitches or bugs? 'Coz it's a pity if I couldn't upgrade from GB. The hardware of this phone is good enough, but the firmware is kinda frustrating(slow, freezes, and worst of all, GB), don't get me wrong, I don't hate GB but for the hardware of this phone, it's too good to just stay in GB. Thanks again!
Reflash back to gingerbread. That should restore your ieme number. Than try again.

Sure, but that doesn't answer the original question. Going back to BML (which was on Gingerbread, of course) will restore the original /efs partition. This is because all of the MTD installs do not overwrite the original BML /efs partition.
Now, the concerning issue is that the nv_data.bin shouldn't be getting any bigger then the original (I don't have my sgs4g on hand to verify), but what may have happened is yaffs2 partition options in the kernel may not be the same or formatting may have added more partition data to the filesystem layout that makes the available free space on the partition less. (does this paragraph not make sense? If so, ask and I'll go into more detail)
So, let me ask you to do a test.
WARNING!!! Make sure you backup the EFS partition while on GB before emptying the directory!
Backup EFS (do this from recovery with adb shell):
Code:
su -
mount /efs
mount /sdcard
cd /
tar cf /sdcard/efs-backup.tar /efs
Go back to stock GB. There are Cne-Clicks I made to do this. Root the install and post the output of:
Code:
su -
rm -rf /efs/* /efs/.*
df /efs
Restore EFS (again, from recovery, adb shell):
Code:
su -
mount /efs
mount /sdcard
cd /
tar xf /sdcard/efs-backup.tar
Next, do the same for cm-9.1.0.
After that, do the same with which ever cm-10 or 4.4.x kernel you're using.
Post all of the values here and lets debug that way. I'll bet you that the available free space and total size are DIFFERENT when the partition is empty.
You don't need to restore the EFS on MTD installs, but MAKE VERY SURE you restore the EFS on the BML (Gingerbread) install!!!
Maybe also try different CM10.x and 4.4.x kernels and see if there is a difference. For each test, note which kernel, which rom. Also for each test, flash back to Gingerbread (bml, from the oneclick) before flashing a new rom!
All the nv_data.bin files I have are 262.1kB.
The tar backups the installtion script creates for you should be 700kB or less.
It sounds like something went seriously wrong with the nv_data.bin file you are trying to restore, so I recommend you follow the advice @champ1919 gave you and go back to gingerbread an flash your ROM again.
After you flash make sure that the nv_data.bin file under /efs/root/afs/settings/nv_data.bin is exactly 262.1kB. If that's the case then save the efs backup the install script made for you in a safe place.
Mine from froyo are 256.0 KB for locked and 260 for unlocked., weird..

Interesting. I think all the ones I got were from phones built at around the same time since they have similar text in the nv_data files.
The locked/unlocked files should be the exact same file size every time. All the tends to change is a single 1 in the file becomes a 0 to unlock it.
I had stored them in Dropbox. I betcha one is from the vibrant I lost, but, I thought I deleted it so I would not goof. As soon as I can get to a PC, I'll dig into it somemore. I wonder who wrote that guide years a go on how to hexedit that file. I should give them another thanks.

It's not confusing at all. SGH-T959V (VibrantPlus) is not the same as SGH-T959 (Vibrant). They are not compatible, and flashing roms between the two will lead to bricks. Make sure that under the battery it says: SGH-T959V
The only thing these two devices have in common is their original provider: T-Mobile
Otherwise, go to the right forum for your phone before following any directions in this forum.

Well, the reason why I was trying to flash CM10.1 is to upgrade from GB so if I were to reflash to GB then I would've defeated my purpose.
But, I did try that, and backed up my EFS so as to restore it later on after I have flashed CM10.1 but to no avail.

Im sorry for the messed up reply sir, and thanks again for your reply,
Just to confirm, my device is INDEED T959V.
I did the cat > /sdcard/efs.rfs bla bla bla thing in the hope to make an ODIN flashable "fix" in the hope of getting my IMEI and baseband fixed.
And, just as you said, it didn't work. I also tried erasing the /efs by erase_image then mkdir -p /efs and then cd /efs then tar xf /sdcard/efs.tar but that also produced a "cropped" nv_data.bin. Im sorry I can't try your directions as of now because I'm currently using my phone for work, however, I will do as you said as soon as I can free up my device.
Q: Do I need to take my backup before I flash a custom kernel? or is it ok if back it up while using a custom kernel?
Q: So T959V is VibrantPlus, is it the same as Samsung Galaxy S 4G?
Q: So if T959V is VibrantPlus, should I look for ROMs with the naming convention of <rom name>-vibrantplusmtd?

Which phone model do you have?
Im running the new slimkat with no issue. Fb's cm11 was just as good. I bounce between those and back to GB when I need tv out with no issues.

I have a T959V.
I tried the SlimKat and SlimSabre but I still got no IMEI even after manual restore. I also tried the CM11 and still have the same problem.
So, when you go back to gingerbread, your number is still hosed?

Go back to stock gingerbread with my oneclick. Read all of the directions here first.

No, we don't call it vibrantplus, because it cause so much confusion with vibrant. we call it galaxys4g for bml or galaxys4gmtd for mtd.

Well I've tried many posts about restoring nv_data.bin but none of them seems to work. I even tried to edit nv_data.bin by hex. That's how desperate I am to upgrade. XD
By hosed, you mean corrupted or invalid? I use OneClick Heimdall by sir bhundven I believe..
and to answer the question, I get my IMEI and baseband back everytime I flash the OneClick. It's when I try to upgrade to CM++ that I get the null baseband and IMEI.
and to clarify, I got that backup process directions from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859914

NO This is not the right place to look for help. Although the 'Galaxy S 4G' is a 'Galaxy S' based-device, it is VERY different from the i9000!!!
Do not use instructions from other device forums!!!
We have documented a lot for this phone in this device forum and on our wiki
As I mentioned before (in this thread) instructions on backing up your efs, and restoring it. Use my instructions and let us know in this thread if you have any problems!

1st, YES I got my IMEI and baseband back, but its a shame if I can't upgrade to CM++(because I don't get my IMEI and baseband after flashing meaning I can't use my phone for work.) because it's a cool rom, it has everything I'm looking for in a custom rom.
AND yeah, I wasn't aware that they were THAT different. Anyways, thanks for pointing that out.
Q: Is there an upgrade path or something that I need to do aside from the standard flashing procedure for these roms?
Bhundven's modified kernel should give you root. You could skip that step of using the oneclickroot and use the heimdall one click (of his kernel) and get cwm & root in one step. It's linked in the link he gave you.
After you install cwm, is that when you loose the imei number? Are you letting the phone fully boot? How were you getting cwm in order to flash the cm?

Sorry,
What I meant by OneClick is using Heimdall in flashing the purely stock GB rom. After that, I root using Framaroot(successful) then I flash a custom kernel(bhundven's blastoff...IMEI and baseband still ok after this), then I flash CM++ ROM, this is where it gets ugly--I lose my IMEI(null) and baseband(also null). and YES I let the phone fully boot, I even wait around 15mins and try to turn the radio on and off to see if I got my IMEI and baseband back, I also tried taking out the battery and letting the phone loose all it's power and then turning it on, again, to no avail. And to answer the other question, I get CWM through the blastoff kernel.
Sorry if it's been asked but interesting in rooting my phone but my build number is h81010o, don't see a root image for it anywhere does it exist? Thanks and sorry again if it's redundant.

Here is the link @Cor-master it was in my Google drive recents just to make it clear I didn't upload it I just found it
dslix... What about the flash code for the att h81010o? Do you know where i could find it or would the code for the h81010g work? Could it work if i changed the 10g in the code to 10o?

Follow this guide. Just follow the directions for the H810, and then when you get to this command:
Code:
dd if=/data/media/0/system.rooted.h81010g.img bs=8192 seek=65536 count=579584 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0
Change it to the name of the rooted h81010o image. So it'd become:
Code:
dd if=/data/media/0/system.rooted.h81010o.img bs=8192 seek=65536 count=579584 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0
That's how I rooted mine.
Thanks for the help guys, now I just gotta find time to pull the trigger. I wouldn't even care about root if LG had set the dpi properly. Everything is too big by default, really makes typing a pain and negates the screen size. Used the adb method to change it and it's much better but there's graphical issues that aren't present when you change it the proper way by editing the build prop.

Please make sure to make a backup of your stock system.img, before flashing the rooted 10o .img, you'll thank me later.
Wont let me download for some reason
Trying to backup before installing the rooted image i get:
[email protected]:/ $ dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 bs=8192 skip=65536 count=579584 of=/data/media/0/system.img
lock/mmcblk0 bs=8192 skip=65536 count=579584 of=/data/media/0/system.img <
dd: /dev/block/mmcblk0: Permission denied
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
*edit - Nevermind...It helps to read lol. I wasn't in download mode before running the command
Rooted 10o with this method. Very easy as long as you read every word of post. Thank You!!

Yes if your talking about the ones u move to your phone in the middle of rooting then yes after completing root that one ur told to move to your phone can be deleted
Yes. I saw the two of them together, and I'm guessing the other one is the backup I made of my factory system.img.
Just to clarify... Use the system.rooted.h81010o.img from this thread instead of using the 10g.tar.gz from the guide snowrelyt posted? I ask because they are 2 different size files and want to make sure im doing it right the first time. I know the 10g wont work if I'm on 10o but wasnt sure if one was .img and the other was a tar.gz

Hey I tried this with the 10o image but something has gone wrong. I was moving it to root of phone and windows made the usb disconnect sound. Now my phone is read only. I've tried mtp. Drag and drop from sd card. I even factory reset phone and even tried flashing 10o firmware with tot file but it's still not writable. Any ideas. Thanks

Basically in a nutshell the dpi setting is the scaling method, and the lower the number, the smaller everything is on the screen. Allows you to get more screen real estate for your size basically. LG has it set way to high by default. Status bar and navbar end up being huge as a result, and all your ui element's as well. Basically the g4 is set to scale for a 5 inch screen not a 5.5 inch screen
