Anyone know how to get Google Translate working with offline speech input (e.g. in airplane mode) on the Idol 3? This worked for me on my old Moto phone running KK (actually, running CM11). But on the Idol 3, I can do offline translation via typing (having downloaded the relevant offline language packs), and I can get the app to speak either the typewritten input or output, but when I tap the microphone to activate speech input, I get a never-ending "initializing" message. Voice typing itself works offline (e.g. I can compose a notepad note), just not within Google Translate.

You might try installing the google offline voice xposed module....you might also have luck using a keyboad like swiftkey that has it's own voice input button.

I can update a bit. If I go to settings/Language & Input/Voice Input and select "Basic Google Recognition", then Translate will most of the time (not always) recognize my speech input offline (as noted before I have no issues in other apps, so I can't see where swiftkey would help), for going from English to the other language of interest (in this case, Japanese). And the phone will speak the Japanese translation. But going in the other direction does would not work. I have the Japanese offline language pack installed, so that is not the issue. The issue may be that I didn't have Japanese as an installed "Downloaded Language" under "Offline speech recognition". I have now taken care of that, (it requires knowing how to write "Japanese" in kanji characters), but seemingly it still doesn't work offline (I don't have a good Japanese speaker available to test, but with an internet connection the app recognizes my poor Japanese. But not offline.)
Have you considered using a dedicated app for your translations rather than google? I know I picked up one or two as amazon free apps. One was http://www.amazon.com/Jourist-Verla...1440539636&sr=1-1&keywords=travel+interpreter
I mention it because you may want to review "similar apps" and see if any are free and will suit your purpose.
I am new to this, I have copied the repo software onto my SD card. What do I do now? I still have no offline voice recognition.
Had similar probl w s4

Hi,
I am at a complete loss. In Language and Input Settings the default language set is English (United States). I have SVOX Classic installed and legitimately purchased the Grace (US) voice. I have SVOX enabled and set as the default engine. In settings with I tap listen to sample, it tells me it is SVOX Classic. All my apps that support TTS use the SVOX Grace voice.
However, whenever I use Google Navigation, I get the window asking me to install a voice, which is weird, because I do have SVOX Installed. I then proceed through the steps, by clicking install anyway, but it's as if Google Nav doesn't seem to recognize that SVOX is installed. I make sure to select Grace as the voice, but instead of getting street names read, etc like it should, Google Nav just tells me when a turn is approaching in X number of miles or feet, and when I approach the turn it just says "Turn Left" or "Turn Right." No reading of street names, etc.
I've tried every trick I read online in all sorts of forums. I tried uninstalling the Grace voice and SVOX Classic. Rebooting the phone, then reinstalling svox and the grace voice. For some reason or another, I cannot get Google Nav to recognize and use the default SVOX TTS engine.
Does anyone have any insight?
Thanks!

PS - Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, rooted, stock ROM (v2.3.6 build UCLA3)
I have a Galaxy S3 with ICS and had this same symptom.
Both my google navigation and my talking assistant spoke in that monotone google tts instead of the SVox that I could hear if I pressed listen to a sample.
the trick was to install Text-To-Speech_Extended_3.1.apk
you may not find this on google play or if you do it may say it is not compatible with your device.
download it from here http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/text-to-speech-extended
then open it with your file explorer and install by clicking on the apk.
you will find that your svox will work with google navigation on ics with the galaxy s3 and I presume the s2 as well.
if no luck after install, try swapping back to old speech engine and back to svox in android settings.
I ran into a problem with the recent update to the Google Text-To-Speech app.
I was testing out and trying to decide between the new high quality US and UK English voices. Somehow my default language for speech got locked into UK English: I can no longer change it to anything else, even though my default device language is US English and I have downloaded both the low and high quality US English voices.
See my screenshots - despite me changing my chosen language to US English in the Google Text-to-speech Engine settings in the 1st screenshot, once I hit the back button (or exit via the home / recent apps buttons), my default language reverts to UK English as per the 2nd screenshot.
Is there any system file I can edit to change this absurd behaviour? I'm rooted and willing to get my hands dirty...
UPDATE:
I played around with settings and managed to resolve the problem.
Clearing data from / un- and re-installing the app / restoring data from another device didn't work - what did work was choosing another default device language (NOT the voice language under Text-to-speech output). This somehow released the "lock" on UK speech and allowed me to choose US instead. I then reverted the default device language to US English.
All is now good in the world :victory:
Trying going to Google Text-to-speech or Google TTS, whichever one it is, in the app settings and clear data.

That was one of the first things I tried, but it didn't help.
Anyway I managed to resolve the problem already. Gonna update the OP.

So I got a Google Pixel and was setting up voice and 'Okay Google' on the Google app when I noticed that it had set 'English (India)' as the primary language. This caused the Assistant to use an Indian accent when it replied to me., plus there was a noticeable "lag" in its responses. I changed the primary language to 'English (US)' and the Assistant lost the accent but it also had issues understanding my 'OK Google' commands, even after retraining the voice model. Plus, it would get some commands incorrectly. Is there no way to have 'English (India)' or another language set as input, and 'English (US)' set as output language,i.e., keep one language for input and one for output, rather than one primary that overrides the secondary?
Hi. The Chinese version of the Mate 9 comes with some preloaded apps called HiVoice, HiLives, Huawei Read, Huawei Club, HiWallet, HiCare, HiApp and Huawei Health. Many of these apps could be useful but work primarily in Chinese. Are there English versions of these apps or is there a way to set them up so that they work primarily in English? Especially with voice recognition. Also the phone will allow you answer a call by voice command but the default command is in Chinese. Is there a way to answer in English. When dialling a phone number you get a Chinese directory. Anyway to disable this or use a more local based directory. Also, when on lockscreen, long press of volume down asks something related to contacts but it is in Chinese. Can this feature be utilized in English? Thanks!
Easier way is to flash an international firmware, cause most features are in English like direct calling, hivoice is replaced by Google search and so on.

Yes. Thanks. Currently that is my plan b or rather c. I'm just trying to see how much I can get out of this original set up with the Huawei apps. But if it is true that these apps and so forth are really too China centric to be that useful for me, I'll probably just delete them and use equivalent google apps and so forth. If that doesn't do it I'll rebrand to International or North American. Is there any difference between those two anyone knows of?
same issue
I got all of the above from Chinese version in australia.
Dont know how to make english as default for all "hi" app from huawei.
Has anybody managed to figure out how to get Google Translate to work offline for voice/conversion translations with Android 8 or 9? If so, please explain how.
Google translate used to do offline voice translation, once you had figured out you need to install 3 lots of offline data. This has helped me out many times in places with no internet access. They removed this feature after V5.10 so for years I have been using the old version under Android 5,6 & 7 without any issue. I have been trying for hours to get it to work under Android 8 & 9 without success. I just get the error "Speech input is having difficulties. Try again (E1001)"
I think this might be that the system seems to be now using "speech services by google" instead of the google app for voice recognition.
I can't understand why they removed this feature, everything is there to complete the task, offline voice recognition, offline text translation, offline text to speech output. They even removed voice typing from the translate text input field.
There is a sort of workaround (after you have downloaded all the offline data)
From any text input field, use voice typing, then select the result and share to translate. This is quite a faff as you need to change the preferred language each time to have a conversation. Could a third party app do this automatically (allow voice typing and pass the result to the translate app)?
If anybody has figured out how to get the translate app to work, or a better workaround, please let me know.
Thanks
Really surprised nobody else wants to get offline voice translations working again.
I've spent many more hours and still can't get rid of the E1001 error.
Tried Microsoft translate but that also disables voice typing input - Why??
There must be a way to fix this?
I must be the only one wanting this. Still can get it to work. Best workaround I can find is using SpeechTexter app to do the voice typing then share the result to translate app. A bit of a faff. Surely there is a better way?
Any suggestions?
