Custom Ringtones for Contacts - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note5

I just got my Note 5 today and I was working through setting it up. I was able to setup a new default ringtone just fine. But, I have a different ringtone I use for my wife so that I know when she's calling. I've looked through all the settings and seem to be unable to set a ringtone specific to that contact. Anyone else having this issue or is it just me?
On the Note 4 I did this by editing the contact & there was an option to assign a ringtone. It doesn't seem it's anywhere to be found on the Note 5.

You have to hit edit and then add another field then ring tone

I tried that, but didn't see the option there. This is all I see when I try to add a new contact field.

I do have the option to assign Ringtones just like the other guy said. Works fine... Click on contact.. Click edit.. Click add... Click assign Ringtone

This might not work if you have your wife's number saved to your SIM card.

I figured out the problem. I use Card-dav to store & sync my contacts (I don't use Gmail or Google contacts), and for whatever reason they Note 5 is not setup to allow custom ringtones for those contacts (even though it did just fine on the Note 4). So, I just created a device contact & set the ringtone there, then linked the two contacts together. A bit cumbersome, but it'll get the job done since it's the only contact that requires that kind of work.

That's a bit dissapointing. I use card-dav as well. Thank you for figuring this out.

Firstname, Lastname in Contacts

Yes, I've searched and found 3rd party applications (for other devices, not Raphael. Not sure if they'll still work)
BUT, I swear when I first bought my phone last week, I was playing around with the phone, AdvancedConfig/DiamTweak/TF3DTweak, SOMETHING, and I KNOW I saw an option to choose Firstname, Lastname and vice versa. For some reason I can't find it now.
My question: Is there an option on the phone to change this or was I dreaming when I found it?
If not, what's the easiest way to set this option?
Thanks.
When you go to insert a contact via outlook or to edit existing contacts its the 6th option down "File as" and you can choose First/last or Last/First.

I knew I saw something. Thanks
Is there a way to convert all of them at the same time? Going one-by-one for 200+ contacts is extremely time-consuming.
I'm not a miracle worker haha. Maybe someone else can help I have no clue.
amazingly i was searching for this exact same thing yesterday.
unfortunatly there is no easy way apart by using outlook, BUT there is an app for the universal called FILEASCONTACTS.cab whih adds a sub menu to your contact screen which swops the display name to firstname. lastname.
i have tested on touch pro works fine. you will still have to do every single contact but at least you wont have to edit and then select file as...
hope this helps.

Try this (this works on most other android phones)
1. Create a folder in the root of your SD card called ringtones (lower case r at the front).
2. Put all the mp3 versions of the ringtones you want to use in this folder.
3. Reboot your phone.
4. Now, all the ringtones should show up when you go to select a ringtone for you phone.
5. Go to your contacts and pick the person you want to assign a custom ringtone for.
6. At that person's main contact page, hit the Menu button (the capacitive button at the bottom left of your phone) and select Options
There it should have a spot for assigning a custom ringtone for that contact.
You can also create a folder on the root of your SD card called notifications (also a lower case n at the beginning) and you can put in sounds you want to use for e-mail, SMS and other notications. On my Nexus you usually have to reboot after adding or removing files from these folders to be able to see them, and I would stick with an mp3 format as much as possible.
Also, there aren't any ways to add custom notifications for a person that I know of yet, outside of maybe a 3rd party app.
If you have any other general Android questions try searching XDA or Google for the answers. A lot of the google results will link back to XDA, but maybe for another device (but the answer will apply to most Android devices overall).

Google contacts dont seem to allow it. So I guess the question is how do we convert contacts from google to standard phone contacts.
I can't believe Samsung took out this important feature!

I can answer that...I had the same issue, and figured it out this evening.
Export your contacts in GMail to a VCard file, then dump that file onto the SD card on the phone.
Import/Export while in your address book, and make sure you select "Phone" and not your linked GMail accounts.
Problem solved.

awesome! gonna try it now! i've been looking for a way to do this
ok, so i tried this, and it shows a linked contact, the phone and the gmail. but in order for it to work, i'm having to make the phone the default not gmail, and then unlink the contact. does that make sense?
You don't need to import contacts. You can create a new contact on your "phone", not Gmail, with the same name. Afterward, the new contact will automatically linked to the Gmail contact. Then edit that contact and you will see a new tab called "Phone", inside that tab is where you can change the ringtone.
i like having all of my contacts synced to google for quick editing and for backup, will I have to create new contacts twice to assign them a custom ringtone? it seems we are missing a few important features.
this also affects group sms, since the sms program wont look at google groups, only local groups
this seems to be hit and miss for some reason. i was able to move my contacts to the phone, it linked them, and allowed me to edit the phone version to have a custom ringtone. the problem now is that sometimes the ringtone works other times it just goes to default. is there a way to not sync your gmail contacts to the phone and install them manually?
all of these work arounds are pretty stupid. The fact that samsung, disabled this feature, or that android doesn't support it is STUPID. If you do any of these steps you end up having duplicate contacts. Worse yet, on many menus, it will show 4 phone numbers (ie 2 for mobile and 2 for home). I can't belive such a fundamental feature is SOOOOO broke.

Disjoin contacts

I have round 1,200 contacts on my exchange server
For quite a number of friends I saved only the first name. And this @&%^# contact app from Samsung joins all the people who have the same first name (When nop last name is saved). How convenient...
I "could" go trough all my contacts and split them. But it's slow. And every time I flash a new ROM and charge my contacts through exchange they get agregated again
Is there a settting somewhere where we can prevent the application from merging contacts ? Or if keeps on doing so, is it possible to have it save the fact you split the contacts somewhere on my exchnage account (So that it doesn't do it again the next time I reload everything...)
Or maybe some of you have already settled for another Contact manager app
It's super annoying
Anyone?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
dont know the answer but writing this to wish you luck i have 120 contacts and it was a real pain to put it in order 1200 contacts i cant imagine
Isn't it confusing anyway having multiple contacts with the exact same name? How do you know which is which?
I make sure all my contacts have either a last name, or some differentiating text at least.
There's no way to stop the app doing it automatically, the only options are to either clean up your contact entries at the GMail end, or use a different contacts app.

I use exchange but yeah I get what you mean by "clean up your contact entries at the GMail end"
How do I differentiate ? The good stuff with smartphone sis we can include pictures... Same first name different picture --> fastest way to differentiate for me. However the stupid app merges the contacts and put the pic of the first contact --> I am lost
Honestly, not having the option is a shame. That's a bad application. At the very least it should allow you to choose to merge automatically or not. At best it should leave you the choice of the aggregation key (Which filelds make a contact unique)
That sucks badly... very poor level of programming...
Actually i was wrong. This crappy piece of software also sometimes joins contacts that have a last name... I don't know what to say. I don't understand why there is no option to decide the key of oining contacts (Or simply disable it...)

Ringtones for individuals

Ok I've loaded some ringtone files and notifications on to my SD card currently in
/mnt/sdcard/media/audio/notifications
Now my ringtone I've set as default plays when the phone rings as does my notification for txt(Sms) messages.
But if I try to assign a ringtone to a user it reverts back to default.
Ps I've just tried picking one of the other defaults and it does the same thing, so I don't it the location of my files that's the issue.
Anyone else able to set individual ringtones for people??
Don't put the files there. Make new folders on the sd card for Ringtones/Notifications/Alarms & put your files in whichever folder you want the sound to be
The files appear in the lists ok and as I said I can pick them for default ringtone and messaging.
The problem is that I can not assign an individual ringtone to a specific person regardless of its one of my own or one of the inbuilt ones.
try taking out of the folder you put them in & making folders like I suggested & then try it & report your findings.
Nope no difference. I still can not assign any alternative ringtone to an individual.
I can see the list and select anything, it plays and then soon as I hit ok, it goes back to the contact details and shows as default.
hmm that's odd. I don't know what to tell you. If someone else doesn't come up with a solution you may want to try a hard reset
have you rebooted since moving the files? Just a though.

Yep a soft rest was the first thing I did.
No biggie for now I'll keep digging around and see if I can figure it out, if not hard rest.
cheers guys
my custom ringtones are in a folder called "media" on the root of my sd card. with four folders inside notifications, ui, ringtones, and alarms. I have a separate default ringtone for calls then I have multiple contacts with different ringtones and my text app and gmail app both have separate ringtones. I have had no issues...
Use your Music app v3.0.211... to do it !
It has a colored note as an icon.

[Q] How to add "phone-only, unsynced" contacts?

I can't find the answer to this questions anywhere, so I thought the good old xda community could help.
I have two exchange accounts set up in my phone and no Gmail accounts. Before I was able to add contacts as "phone only, unsynced". Now that I have the exchange accounts whenever I want to add a contact I have to choose one of those two accounts but there is no option to save "phone-only".
Question: How can I add phone-only, unsynced contacts?
Thanks in advance for any insights!
Try turning off sync temporarily on both email account under Setting-->Accounts then add a contact and see if that gives you the unsync option back when adding contacts. Let me know how it goes
Sync is off in both accounts. I only receive email through push. Thanks for suggestion though! Any other ideas?
Any ideas on this? Appreciate any help!
Possible answer
Sorry for reviving such an old thread but I had this problem and while I was searching for a solution this came up so for the sake of completeness here is a possible answer.
There is an app that allows you to import appointments from iCal files now while that is not you issue to do this the app creates a dummy account on the phone that is unsynced and from my experience you are able to add contacts under that account.
So hopefully this works for you.
Also just to mention this app is not mine nor have I had any input into it.

Solution
Hi, I'm looking into upgrading my Motorola Atrixand in the meantime decided to update android. Immediately following the update (to 2.3), I realized that my old SIM contacts were missing. However, I noticed the missing contacts, although deleted from my SIM were somewhere on my phone. Ex. in my text history, the names were still there. I could click on a contact and when in edit mode, it read: unsynced contacts from att address book. I found no solution on android forums, etc. So I logged in to att.com and performed a search. It lead me to instructions on how to migrate contacts from 1 phone to another. I know I'm only referring to the same phone, but I tried it anyway. It worked!!
All you need to do is go to contacts, menu, export to sd card (hopefully your phone supports external storage). Then import from sd card. All my contacts are back. I first tried to export to SIM card, but It didn't work (however, this is where I could visually see my missing contacts as it allows you to select - I have over 800 contacts so I dont have time to go through the list) - I'm guessing this issue occurred to people whose complete contact list would not fit on the SIM. Probably if your contact list did fit on the SIM you did not experience this issue. If it happened to you and you do not have external storage I guess you could still use the SIM option by selecting a few contacts at a time - if you maxxed out the SIM storage you would need to delete them from SIM before copying more.
Anyway, once you do this it adds all contacts to the Google address book so you're now good to switch phones and get them just by adding your Google acount.
Hope this helps some folks - I was feeling desperate without about 150 of my oldest contacts.
